A bit of a sad development actually. I don’t understand why people choose Unraid to use ZFS or virtualisation. Other solutions already does this. Unraid could focus on the things others don’t do.
Before i could use same gpu for docker container and VM , when i used to start VM tye gpu used to get psssthrough to VM and when VM shutdown gpu back to containers , but now i have to manually do bind vfio at boot to psssthrough gpu to VM than unbind reboot again to use in docker container ..😢
Thanks for this. Are you buy any chance going to re-do any of your old tutorials for version 7? Like for instance, making Nextcloud accessible from the internet? I could never get that to work.
love it ed! very well done, thank you
I wonder what the new pricing model will be
Still no way to install unraid on an SSD? I have a spare 60GB ssd that would be perfect :(
Well, only live migration is now keeping me away from using this full time instead of Proxmox. Why not add that in? I mean, command line wise it’s rather easy, and the infrastructure is already there, so why not make some section in Settings where you configure some other server’s IP and if that’s available, have the VM go there. Also, a checkbox to have VMs migrate there when shutting down the host and that’s it, this is way friendlier and faster to get going and more versatile than Proxmox for me, especially with the advanced VM options now, snapshot support in the GUI and so on. I just need this basic high availability support and that’s it.
Did u just reupload this video?
Yes- there was a section in the last video talking about the OpenSSH vulnerability that mistakenly said Unraid 6.12.10 and earlier was affected. This part was corrected.
@@uncastshow ok. Thank you.
Wish Unraid would consider a Debian based OS base like Ubuntu Server. Better ZFS support and newer Linux kernels and packages would mean better power consumption, better cpu scheduling. Better security.
Love unraid ❤
does someone know more on vm snapshots ? is it at the vdisk level (qcow2) or the underlying file system ? Can we export snapshot to backup the vm ?
I really appreciate the visual tour of all the changes. Great presentation!
Raid Z is a good start but totally bad to use. Why would i add a brand new HDD to have safety but at the same time have my HDD running empty. It’s getting hours for no reason which can give me a fault safety HDD. U gotta rethink this concept.
Great improvements, can't wait for Unraid 7! The option to migrate VMs is actually really beneficial for those running 24/7 services like a mail server. Live migration between two Unraid servers would be fantastic. I might even consider migrating my Proxmox cluster to Unraid if there were an option like "Automatically migrate VMs on server shutdown/reboot. Keep up the good work ❤
27:50 Wait, can we run older GPUs in a virtual machine? I have an Nvidia GT210, will it run in a Windows 10 VM for example? When I tried to set this up, I got a black screen too.
Yep you sure can now. When creating the vm use seabios then put the below in the template in the advanced tuning options. No more black screen 😃 <qemu:override> <qemu:device alias='hostdev0'> <qemu:frontend> <qemu:property name='x-vga' type='bool' value='true'/> </qemu:frontend> </qemu:device> </qemu:override>
@@SpaceinvaderOne Thank you! Sorry, turns out I had an Nvidia 8500 GT video card. Unfortunately, I have strange artifacts when I boot into a virtual machine (Win XP). The image consists of console characters that was previously on the screen from unRAID. This only happens on the boot screen, in the system I only see a black screen. Connecting in parallel with VNC shows that the video card has error status code 10 in Device Manager. Drivers are installed manually, the installer did not let me install them correctly. I also tried enabling VFIO for the video card, also played with "unsafe interrupts" for it. Even pulled the vbios from it thanks to your script, using it didn't do anything either. Have you had similar problems? Maybe the problem is that this is the first and primary video card in the server?
Loving the new VM changes. I also think ill stick with normal unraid array with double parity backup running a single zfs disk to make snapshots of all my SSD's. Being able to use random capacity drives is key for me. I just need to finally figure out how to get GPU passthrough working for a windows VM and I can finally start playing some of my games again. Its a total S-show with outdated tutorials from various sources lol. Im stuck with virtual GPU :(
Glad to see that arrays are optional! My main setup is 8x22TB hard drives in a RAID 10 pool, so no longer needing a single drive to maintain an array is great! Also appreciate being able to have two pools used for primary and secondary storage and Mover can work between them.
What would happen with full ssds in terms of unRaid write speed? will it go higher than 30mg/s that usual for writing to a hdd array (without a cache)
I have an SSD ZFS pool in Unraid and I can easily saturate the PCIe 3.0 speed of my server.
@@petersunga thanks for your reply and experience. Do you know in an unRaid none ZFS setup, can it also break from the 30mb/s write on a pure ssd array? what im looking is that if the real time copy / pairty limitaion that penalizes copy transfer rates can be increased by using faster media, like SSDs (not talking about a cache).
I was just thinking i haven't heard of anything interesting lately from unraid. Then, this is possibly the most interesting release in a while.
Please hide the server icon edit button when the padlock is green.
snapshots are really awesome. great improvements overall.
Will we be finally able to passthrough iGPU (such as AMD Ryzen 5700G) to Windows VM?
Finally i can migrate my Nas Server from truenas
Snapshots is the best feature !
The blank screen on SeaBIOS drove me insane! Glad it is fixable now
Yeah totally agree :)
Paying for a license should give me the option to decide to use my m2 intel ax211 WiFi card in my nas. If I get trouble I can plug the lan cable in when ever I want.
Sigh ... Always that focus on ZFS. What makes Unraid unique compared to the other solutions, is the Array, that allows you to run individual filesystem per disk (safer), sleep disks (saves power), while having life parity updates(unlike snapdraid) for those disks you access/write. People have been asking for multiarray to avoid that 2 parity disk issue or those that have more then 30 drives (zfs, nvme cache etc drives also eat up slots). I am kind of tired to see years of focus on ZFS but the whole bread and butter, the special feature of Unraid, the actual Array system being neglected! You can see that the devs refuse to go beyond the limit of 30 drives / 2 parity to sell more licenses. You want multi array? Buy a entire extra system, and another license... You want more then 2 parity drives for 20 disks? Well Fy, buy another system and another licence. As for me, i stopped using unraid and simply moved to Proxmox, combined with snapraid. Sure, it misses out on the live parity but, free and i can shove as many parity drives into my old janky HDDs. Do not try to say this on Unraid forums or reddit. 😏
He said new pricing? What does that mean..
When?
@@uncastshow Its in the video ... I also heard it. Its simply referring to the new pricing model, the new website, and the v7 naming because so much changed. Somewhere at the start, do you even lissen to the videos you post?
Hey space could i please request you do an updated win 98 video - would be good to see for sure. Presumably you are using a pcie to pci bridge for your voodoo and soundcard for your win98 vm cheers
30:38 lol wtf is that AI image :D otherwise great video!
I was hoping to see the ability to use the same GPU in multiple VMs. (Unraid 8 ?? :p)
Great show and guest Ed. Listened to both you and Larry for many years. Both have done so much for their respective communities in the tech world. Have them chat together here superb!
Thank you!
Is the only option still to boot from a single USB stick? I boot TrueNAS from a mirrored pair of trusty old 128GB MLC SSDs.
holy crap! this is where unraid becomes a complete home networking system. I am gobsmacked at the improvements.
Ah I just swapped from unraid to truenas
Final Notice: you must release unRAID 7 immediately and it has to be extremely stable 🤔🤨🙄😳😲😉👍
Can we spread shares across multiple ZFS pools now? I didn’t see that mentioned
Hooray for Intel Arc GPU support, and awesome updates to the VM config options. Great video as usual Spaceinvader!
Nice video and look forward to the upgrade. Did we get the ability to alter the amount of RAM allocated to ZFS?
I've been wanting pretty much all of those features to do with VMs since I first got into unraid back in 2019.
Just did the update and completely got locked out. I can get in via shell, can’t via web 🤦🏼♂️
There was talk of a built in file manager, is that still happening do you know?
Yes, the dynamic file manager was integrated into the OS: docs.unraid.net/unraid-os/release-notes/7.0.0/
Yes!!! I will install the beta asap!
Hope these new qemu command line stuff means MacInABox will be simplified 28:00
Fantastic presentation, I'm curious when creating a snapshot is there a way of saving it to another location rather than the default vm location? my NVME space can be limiting
Great video Ed. Informative as ever and I am going to install the beta on my spare server. Look forward to more vids on Unraid 7 both on Uncast and your own show.
Thanks again Ed!!! Got to love Unraid!
spaceinvader did you feel goofy staring at empty space for the segment in the beginning of the video where you are staring at the hologram of the unRAID dev/rep?
With ZFS SLOGs and metadata vDevs now being a thing in the near future, can you use the same drives for both? Say you have a mirror vDev of two NVMe drives and you want to use that same vDev as both the metadata special device AND the SLOG? I'm limited in the number of devices I can connect to my server.
Technically it is possible within TrueNAS by partitioning the devices first. However it is strongly discouraged. I would be surprised if Unraid supports such a config within the GUI.
@@mwahlert Yeah, I figured that out after I asked.
You said something about the Macinabox docker and scripts and the new unraid 7 ... a new macinabox tutorial maybe ?
