British MTP Infantry Rucksack - Gear Breakdown
Infantry Rucksack, Bergen and PLCE - official military label names & terms aside, this pack fits all of the above (and a kitchen sink). These rucksacks are in the current British militaries camouflage but holds true to a particularly older design - how does it hold up in the 21st century? Let us know in the comments!
We have secured a limited amount of these at present and carry the DPM & OD versions if that is something you want to check out!

British Army 58 Pattern Webbing - An Overview
Переглядів 5 тис.Місяць тому
The iconic cold war British webset that definitely lives rent free in our minds when we think about the Falklands. It went on to have a very long (really, too long) service life that even made it out to the Gulf war. We had a whole bunch of these arrive and its been years since we've had some so we figured we'd do a overview for those not familiar with it. We'll cover a bit of how it functions,...
ACU Camo Test - Does it FIT IN anywhere?!

Probably the most produced & by that virtue worst 'Universal' camouflages ever issued known to man - is there any good use for this inexpensive surplus on the civilian market? We have by our own admission cherry picked some terrain by taking it to probably the most likely environment your 'average joe' can make it work in - Alpine areas. But what do you guys think? A niche camo that can work wh...
French CCE 4K Camo Test

The French military is one of the largest in Europe and for good reason has made a lot of military surplus exist over the decades. Frances homeland camo of choice is the CCE (Camouflage Central-Europe) or otherwise know as plain old CE camo. Bought out in the 90s - how does it stack up in a temperate woodland environment? And more interestingly still - does it bring some changes that make it be...

We managed to bag some of this camouflage for the first time ever and we got a hot minute to quickly test some out! Hopefully it is the first of more to come, but without having a military surplus crystal ball, even with limited time we'd show the pattern in our immediate backyard. What we have in the video is in stock at time of writing! If you are quick enough and this camo is something you'd...

In this video we address this question and more of what the Austrian (Bundesheer) army have copied with their version and what they have not for those left wondering. If you are reading this at time of release we just landed a bunch of these! Unlike their US counterpart the Austrian versions are incredibly c...

What good is DIGITAL TIGER STRIPE CAMO?
Because I'm an odd ball with my gear I combined lbv88 and used the Alice loops on a PLCE belt and I'm just loving all the capacity I've got to go full retard with potential equipment load.
To correctly form the two side bags and the yoke, you need two straps to join the lower part of the yoke with the lower part of the bags. You're putting it together wrong.
You shouldn't be able to smell a video...
Just some from yous thanks bros
I've got two Alice frames, and after watching a video, added more modern Molle II waist belt and straps and the difference is amazing for comfort.
Not a clue about the KIT and gear ur talking about The plce Bergen is 125' lts . Not the gash ur chatting about ya plank. AB ALL THE WAY. from the U.K. an EX'PARA reg!! From the old shot day's! Green on mucker from a oldswet my self an ex'service AB.
yeh cool ya jets, its issued surplus from your neck of the woods fella. Others rate the main pack at 100L but our measurements put them at a bit over 70 to give people a conservative estimate (not including the 10L for each side pouch). I don't doubt the paras would be cramming every last penny into these and then some extra spilling out 🙂 For those interested, here is the military NSN for ya: 8465-99-361-7307
no chist strep
i noticed the British boonie/bush hat’s brim is too short. it won’t help protect the face, and neck from heat/sunlight…
straight from the British Army's surplus pile that one! they're cut down like that to just shade the eyes & not get in the way. Originally these cuts became popular in the jungle due to thick canopies beaming sunlight only from above
😂 brought back memories 😂. Once you'd lugged it around a while you felt naked without it. Your belt (affixed to the yolk) is upside down mate and at the top of the yolk is another fastener for your usual digging tool. Bloody stuff doubled in weight when wet. The full dress (march) had the lot, belt, pouches, bum roll, shovel and pick, respirator, NBC Kit, stabbing and bashing things, amo (SLR and LMG mags), bayonet, mess tins X2, KFS, wash /boot kit, water, rations, poncho, dry kit, sleeping bag, helmet and more, much more, most of which I've long since forgotten but it added up to around 100lb plus in marching order, not including weapons, Comms etc. Battle dress you dropped the large pack, which could be used as a shooting cushion, but anyways this held your Lovelies, warm stuff, 24hr ration pack, socks, cigarettes, etc etc but the side pouches could hold LMG mags. These obviously came out being placed, or replacing stuff elsewhere on your body. Man I've got to chuckle, I'm 20yrs old again running around like a nutter 😂😂 not bad for a 60++ foot slogger😂😂 good days, cheers fella made my day. Oh the kidney pouch release thing made everything 'light order', quiet approach, hand to hand combat like stuff. Brilliant, much love, stay safe. Dave 🤪
I mean it has red in it. What were they thinking.
allegedly urban fighting among other things but if I was honest I reckon they just saw leibermuster at the end of the war in Czechoslovakia and thought -'yeh, lets just copy that.'
The Danish Military used to use the exact same ruck and yoke system. Just in the Danish M/84 pattern 😅
dam I would love one of these in that camo-would be brilliant on our West Coast!
I do my grocery shopping in a bergen because clutch pedals scare me 😳
🤣🤣🤣
Zelt means tent. It's meant to be combined with other "Zeltbahns" to form a tent, or to be used by its self to shelter one person. Fun fact: german boy scouts still use this exact thing, minus the camo ofc. They legally do not classify as tents in many countries, because they have no floor. Which allows us to make camp in areas where tents are not allowed. They are very practical, but quite heavy.
they are definitely minimalist living, that's for sure. I would recommend a tent over these any day for camping (comfort wise) but if you want to try hard mode & like practicing survival skills with minimal gear or creating some interesting lean-too's, give one a go. They're a interesting bit of historical gear
Slight correction. The only german soldiers who get the privilege of molle gear and armor are troops on deployment and soldiers who are allowed to use private gear. Every Bundeswehr soldier still gets issued a set of these so called "Lochkoppel" with a standard of three mag pouches, a big gp pouch, a even bigger gas mask pouch, a canteen pouch and a shovel pouch. Everything else is privately purchased.
yep that is more or less what I have observed from the outside. Huge variety can be seen from private purchases but they don't seem to be to strict on colours!
@@armyand_Outdoors i remember a guy saying that they can only use gear in tan or Flecktarn. Though their new "mobast" plate carriers are in Steingrau-oliv (german version of ranger green). So they might be allowed to use that color too.
Had the 58 web in 1977 We moved the bum roll to above the kidney pouches stop it snagging on undergrowth When wet it went slack loose so we put Blanco on it to waterproof it to keep it fitted like a glove The Bergen ruck sack replaced the large back pack Fitting tighting the straps rapping black tape around the straps to stop them going loose and bouncing while on a TAB Memories
I have 120 litre Longback in DPM. Still going strong since 1995.
You're missing the 'link straps' which are webbing straps with three male buckles on each. The shirt buckle strap on the bottom of the rocket pouch is for when using a single pocket attached to the yoke and belt. Cheers.
I've got one in DPM, I use it for camping locally.
A video about why the Brits call the rucksack a Bergen. ua-cam.com/users/shortsYAZwWT65CBc
UCP is a great camo pattern, of course ignorant people because they look at each other at 20 yards and are able to spot each other think the camo failed. Even for those that say UCP is useless unless is dyed green, I always challenge them to find me at 400 meters in the jungle (distance for which it was designed to blend) and every single time they fail, even in the snow they fail to spot me while wearing UCP. So, the few that understand camo and how it works, they appreciate it, those that are only limited to distances no longer than 50 yards in woodland and have not much of an idea about camo, they hate it. And it is understandable, nobody can blame you for being ignorant.
400 metres away in "the jungle" you could get away with wearing a clown suit due to vegetation. The reality is that Brigadier General James Moran, then-head of PEO Soldier, set up his own internal design committee of idiots with no training to develop UCP and added it to the evaluation along with the others Natick was testing. Natick tested it and the results showed that it's the worst pattern overall of all the ones tested, but had zero licencing fees, was developed "internally" and Moran had the deciding vote so it was adopted. It's rubbish. You can enjoy it but don't try for a minute to suggest people don't "understand it" or use it properly. It didn't even work in the two theaters is was theoretically supposed to excel in...
@@seanflanaganasarous3908 bro, I try and I do whatever I want, I have the education, the means, the intellect and the resources to do it. Now go and carry on repeating what other undeducated people say...
as someone who has hunted other humans wearing camo for nearly 2 decades in bush, UCP is truely awful anywhere bar some niche areas such as mountainous terrain. It stands out even just a helmet/boonies worth in the woods. I would dye it for any jungle use. Just my 2 cents
@@roguerader cool story champ, needs more dragons though. Best of luck.
@@armyand_Outdoors you hunted humans for 2 decades in the bush huh? answer this? how come the US Navy Seal really truly hunted humans in Vietnam wearing jeans and in some cases t-shirts?
you need a canoe bag to keep your gear dry...use the USMC seal line it's absolutely awesome
can recommend for any pack-seal your gear in with one of those and your golden even in a river crossing!
Now shake that 🤣
Horrible stuff. Especially when wet.
Rockets are also known as shitbins because you fill em with all sorts of crap 😂
I love British terms for things hahahaha
For those wondering why the pattern uses red, it's due to the wavelength of the color in light, over distance the human eye has difficulty detecting this color, leading to it looking like different shades of brown. This pattern is highly effective.
where do ya get the Bucket hat from
we sell them-we get a fairly consistent amount of full brim boonies, but we can get some heavily modified ones we pull out and sell separately. I believe we have a select run of them coming up shortly.
For those wondering why the pack is called the Bergen it is due to the fact the original large rucksacks issued to Commandos in WW2 were based on designs used by hikers and mountaineers based in Bergen, Norway. From there the name stuck.
these are the comments were here for!
Post 58 pattern the IRR Short and Longback, first Mil issue pack with an internal frame, were designed by Bergen.

AWESOME VIDEO!
AMAZING!
Why are they called a Bergen instead of a rucksack or backpack? Where does the name come from?
The backpack was originally issued in WW2 to Commandos and SAS troops. It was based on designs used by Norwegian mountaineers and hikers based in Bergen, Norway, hence the nickname. The name stuck from there. If you look at images from DDay the Commandos carried Bergen rucksacks as opposed to 1937 pattern small packs.
Why do North Americans call it a sweater and the English a jumper? Culture dude! Not everything is going to be named the same in every country.
Good kit- initially designed by Bergaus, the British hiking company (who also invented injection mounded clips, like fastex and the use of hook and loop - Velcro and the internal aluminium frame) they were initially privately purchased because they shat on the 58 pattern packs which were like carrying giant wet sausages. After the Falklands the lesson was learned and OD and then dpm versions were commissioned. They made 2 lengths (short back and long back). Bergaus continue to make the civvy version which doesn’t have the pouch on the front but has the same side pouch/daypack system. The old version is called Vulcan and there’s a new one called crusaders or something. Another small pack was often stuffed in the top - Munro. I’m a bit old to lug around massive packs like this now but back in the day used them all. For a couple of nights I now use the NI patrol pack. It kind of looks like a miniature Bergen. Indestructable and far superior to any main pack used by other armies. The Dutch and Germans use the Vulcan though I think the Dutch have gone with something of their own now.
Something worth adding is the Dutch & Belgians also using the same design for the most part and you see a lot of Berghaus appear in the German Army as well. I'm sure there are some other militaries I'm forgetting that use similar formats.
Roc over 58 lg pack anyday!👍
They have passed the test of time....
they do seem to be definitely grunt proof, that's for sure
Nice Camo🔥

I'm dead because I didn't see you in most of those situations. Good job
Bum rolls . Carry two bum rolls and no large pack.
The Argentine army has used it as standard equipment for troops since 2015. But they don't wear bulletproof vests under it, it's a shame.
you can wear one over the top but to be honest they are more intended for wearing stand alone-something especially suited for warfare in mountains or training where forgoing plates for maneuverability is more prudent
One big pile of shite. Double the weight when wet. When new it was bearable but the stuff you got issued had seen too much service so it fell to bits if you didn't tie it up with string. When in the prone position the largepack bore down on the back of your neck making it impossible to look through your weapon's iron sights. Made basic training a misery. Thankfully by the time I hit Battalion the G10 Bergan was available which while not the greatest was way better than that abortion. Avoid other than as a curiosity.
58 pattern was horrible. Very much bomb proof but weighed a ton, absorbed water like it was going out of fashion and then became even heavier. Soldier 95 / PLCE was a HUGE advancement.
In cadets we binned the Kidney pouches and replaced them with more water bottle pouches. Looked Gucci 😂
In the 70's the British also tried to introduce nylon in their webbing (as the North Americans did with ALICE), it was pattern 72, which did not work and they continued with the canvas of pattern 58.
Where is the Respirator case? You cant wear your helmet with the sleeping bag strapped on top of the pack, remember, it should be a mk4, not mk6, try it.
didn't get those along with the other 'extras' like bino pouch, etc. Yeh I wouldn't fancy trying to get a sleeping bag strapped on 😬
Canvas gear that, when wet, weighs three times as much and takes forever to dry. Another thing is that it shrinks when wet or washed, so it is a problem to reinsert the SLR magazines. This equipment was used by British Forces in 1982 in the Falklands War.
have to say it - the yanks were onto it getting ALICE gear as standard in the 70s (with attempts earlier to go nylon).
As actual web gear, it's subpar, but as camping or hunting gear? It's spectacular.
agree-its worlds apart from the latest and greatest high speed stuff. But for knocking around the woods or historical ends, they're great unusual pieces
