My Top Strategy Games of 2024
It’s been a big year for real-time strategy on the PC. Lots of high-profile launches, whether that means full releases or as is more common nowadays, early access. This is my (very subjective) summary of the strategy games I played and enjoyed in 2024, and erm, an ARPG…
Other than the crowd funding, EA and “soft launching” trend, it seemed that genre mashing was popular. We saw deckbuilding elements combined with RTS in Battle Aces, Sins 2 married 4X with RTS gameplay and titles such as Industrial Annihilation tried to weave in factory automation style gameplay.

Battle Aces Has Huge Potential (and a Problem to Solve...)
Переглядів 1,7 тис.2 місяці тому
Battle Aces is looking to revolutionise the RTS genre with a number of what I think are very interesting ideas. Fixed match lengths, automated resource collection, simplified unit construction and research - all with strategic deck building and planning layered on top. The second closed beta phase has given loads more players a chance to try the game, including me. With the project being spearh...
Is RTS the Next Dead Gaming Genre?
Переглядів 1,4 тис.3 місяці тому
Real-time strategy (RTS) games have been around for a long time, enjoying massive popularity at times - but is the party over? Triple A studios don’t really touch the genre any more, and some of its most successful crowd funded launches have been massive disappointments. In trying to answer this question, we look at other genres which have faced the same challenge for relevance. Some have adapt...
Reviewing Mechabellum - My New Favorite Strategy Game
Переглядів 6383 місяці тому
Mechabellum is a PC strategy game in a niche with a bit of a bad reputation. Unlike many of its genre peers, it is a PC-only, highly complex and deeply tactical beast of a game. With version 1.0 recently released, signalling the end of early access and marked by a new season with a large influx of new players, now is a good time look at the gameplay features, what the game does well and the thi...
When RTS Games Ruled the World - A 90s Retrospective
Переглядів 118 тис.4 місяці тому
The mid 1990’s saw a record number of real-time strategy releases on the PC, sparked by the success of Dune II and Command & Conquer from Westwood Studios, and the Warcraft franchise from Blizzard. During a two-year period, the three greatest and most influential RTS games were launched. Join me as I look at the story behind their development, what made these titles so special, and the enduring...

Sins of a Solar Empire 2 (Sins 2) is a bit of a modern strategy gaming unicorn; a game praised by fans and critics alike… with one notable exception. Join me as we run through all Sins 2 has to offer and try to decide what a fair review score should be, because it certainly isn’t the one from IGN. 00:00 A “mediocre” game? 00:54 Combining RTS and 4X 02:20 Tutorials & set-up 04:17 Planet colonisa...

The Endless War to Replace Total Annihilation
Переглядів 89 тис.Рік тому
Total Annihilation and its successor, Supreme Commander launched a new kind of RTS game, one characterised by gigantic unit counts, hundreds of unit types, a novel approach to “macro” and devastating weaponry, with projectiles modelled in real-time and the very terrain changing as a result of the endless battle between machines. Many years since the dust has settled… the conflict to become the ...
The End of APM?
Переглядів 2,1 тис.Рік тому
APM is a metric introduced in StarCraft: Brood War and long considered a key indicator of player skill in RTS gaming. Thanks to modern technology, we have been able to analyse huge amounts of data, which seems to back this claim. The question is - should we continue promoting APM or does it need to be retired? Is it just a byproduct of clunky unit pathing, archaic interfaces and bad game design...
Sci-fi vs Medieval RTS - Why Setting Matters
Переглядів 4 тис.Рік тому
When it comes to strategy games, two settings dominate. We have the Middle Ages (aka Medieval period) as the scene for some legendary (and somewhat historically accurate) titles. On the other side we have science fiction, taking gamers on a journey of imagination with no bounds. This choice of setting tends to have a profound impact on the type of games produced. How they look, how they play an...
5 Golden Rules to Win in RTS

While all real-time strategy games are different, there are some skills that seem to apply across many titles in the genre. I share my top five golden rules for success in multiplayer RTS, in addition to a couple of bonus tips. These will be particularly relevant to titles such as StarCraft 2, Brood War, AoE4 and upcoming games such as ZeroSpace and Stormgate! 0:00 Produce more, queue less (the...
Beyond All Reason - Total Annihilation Clone or Something Greater?
Переглядів 3,6 тис.Рік тому
Is Beyond All Reason (BAR) more than just a copy/clone of the goat RTS, Total Annihilation (TA)? I set out to investigate with a ton of Beyond All Reason gameplay. At some point I was having so much fun that I forgot my mission, but I think it's safe to say that this game is truly special in its own right. Excitement is building towards the eventual Steam launch! Join me as we look at the mecha...

Coop - StarCraft (and Stormgate's) Secret Weapon
If these rts games just went woke dei theyd still be alive today just sayin u know im right
You should look into combat mission games ,regiments, armoured brigade 1 and 2. They are pretty good rts games
Beyond All Reason
I have played TA since it came out, imo the best RTS ever made. The custom units were also amazing, the map maker was easy to use and so many cool maps were made. I think Beyond All Reason is as good as TA although i sometimes just like to play TA instead. I remember getting a couple of computers linked up at home as a kid so my friends could play TA with me, i remember 10 hour sessions easily. Great times.
To this day those RTS games are played. Largely in part because nobody makes good RTS anymore.
total annihilation never ruled the world. Raather use Age of empires of warcraft 2
2:27 i would point out that this is a pointless comparison. Videogames arent movies. They are interactive and ofc, they should improve over the original. Things made in the first game could be done better in the next entry, if they stick to tue same concept. I mean i could name a long, long, long list of game were the second or third entry dwarfed the first game. For the most franchises, the later entries will become dangerous and this happened also to C&C. On a sidenote, i wouldnt say red alert improved a lot. You have sea units now and thats it. Everything else is exactly the same like in the first game (they changed the building space between buildings too). Looking back at C&C Red Alert the real succes was how dumb this game actually is. No skill required. There is no real gameplay depth. Just build, save, check the enemy base, load, bulldoze the enemy, rinse and repeat. there are a few puzzle missions (tanya or soviet spy hunt etc.) but thats it. The missions play exactly like skirmish mode.
age of mythology is and always will be my favorite rts, objectively there are better rts games but the rts element mixed with mythology makes it my best game ever
Man Total Anihilation!!!!
I don't remember the year, but my Top 3 was: C&C Generals + mods; Dawn of War with Ultimate Apocalypse mod; and Warlords Battlecry 3
Red Alert babes carried the series.
SC and TA had quite a different design philosophy, compare the micro involved in only being able to select 5 units vs being able to select hundreds, also the rock paper scissors nature of ground can’t shoot air, vs even heavy ground artillery could shoot down a plane that happened to get in the way of the shell, finite amount vs finite rate economy was also another big difference. As mentioned in other comments Beyond All Reason is basically a HD remake of TA.
Homeworld
TA was NOT fully 3D, the units were 3D, rendered on top of a tiled 2D map using pre-rendered 3D tiles, with a height-map to determine unit movement, line of fire and line of sight as if it were in 3D.
God seeing those TA units...I remembered their functions exactly....what each one did well, and what it didn't....
I would sell my .... four Total Starcraft
Red Alert is the GOAT of RTS.
Played TA with my friends on a lan network for hours on end, good times! Later on you could get all kinds of mods also (downloaded via isdn phone connection 😄) Made the game even better...
I never heard of tota annihation
When i think about gaming today there is nothing new,we all know what to expect from the different genres. There is nothing groundbreaking unique gameplay.i will give diablo 4 for example,i was hoping they would of created a new arpg experience but its literally diablo 1 but with better graphics. The core gameplay is the same, just button mashing. You would think after 30 years there would be something new
Hell March…enough said.
Yup,dune 2 and dune 2000 rts was awesome command and conquer and red alert ,starcraft, age of empires, those where my games and i will add heroes of might and magic 3 for no reason. Those were the days i have them all on steam. Oh ya Warcraft 2. Warcraft 3 was awesome too. Honestly those were the best days in gaming because it was so exciting to see things we have never seen before, now we know what to expect
Total Annihilation was really the best ever. Supreme Commander could have been even better, but because of bad software optimization, the endgame gets super slow and unplayable.
C&C windows 95 edition is the first game I really got into as a kid.
Aoe
Me and six other fellow co-workers gathered online, together with a couple of beers, and played the ”new” remaster of Red Alert during Christmas. We’re all between 40-45, and what a fun and great gaming experience this was. Red Alert still hold up today 😍
Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance is the BEST RTS ever made!
SC BW is easilly the goat.
RTS was my fave genre of the 90s and early 00's however the only RTS i could not get into is total annihilation. I found it boring compared to starcraft, warcarft, Age of empires and C&C
Wow how you skipped WC1 and 2, AOE and many more
The problem is SC has never been balanced in the first place. Protos is always the overpowered race while zerg is only good if you good in multitasking. The terrans are the race in between for when you bored with protos but not good enough for zerg. It is a shame that blizzard has never changed this and never even tried to balance it. They just changed a couple of numbers every month and called it balancing but changing nothing in the bigger picture.
Wow....I don't know if I even played any RTS games in '24. Seems like there are so few now, I need to look closer to my original gaming love again.
I have original Red Alert and Total Anihilation from the days I was kid. !!!! MAN these were THE games.
X com ufo defense -X com terror from the deep super игры
Never played C&C, never played starcraft. Why would i need to when i already played the best Rts ever? TA! 😂
By no means the first? My guy, which RTS game was there before Dune 2?
Also Earth 2140 was so great at that time. There are also Tzar, Theocracy and so many other great RTS games from the past.
No mention of Krush Kill and Destroy? Dayummmmm
Warcraft the goat!
I forgot how great SC1 looked.. I kinda like it better than SC2!
Check out then Mass Recall
The game is lacking, it just feels like a more advanced dlc tbh, not a true sequel. The graphics are great though.
RTS… I’ve never loved anything else that I’ve been so equally bad at playing.
I friggin Love Starcraft 2 and wouldn't trade it for the world.
Star Craft is a peak RTS slam dunk.
Eh sc2 was still a great game. Gaming just left RTS behind its hard to play these on console and there very stressful to play i totally get why rts is semi dead.
Hmm on the subject of SC2. It sales have been twice as much as SC1 and got mainstream on a much massive scale. SC2 also evolved in a much more competitive gaming industry era. Don't let nostalgia corrupt your thinking :)
Red alert 2 was soooooooo goood!
Command and Conquer and Red Alert are the GOATS's of RTS games. RTS games these days take themselves too seriously and are too complicated. Like for example, I like Stellaris but it's terrifyingly complicated, has no real story, and takes days to play a single game. Sometimes I just want something simple and campy and just fun.
Also I'm Total Annihilation, It's resource system is my favorite. 1) Infinite Resources! I played enough games of Red alert where we couldn't defeat each other because we ran out of resources. 2) using metal/energy converters i could create an economy of debt and do crazy stuff by and having all of my converters on a hotkey. I'd constantly turn them on and off during play to balance my economy. I've never had anything else like it, and I find trying to play like starcraft 2, to just feel so clunky and restrictive. My other favorite is Dawn of War! What a game.
One hugely important thing about total annihilation's music. You didn't listen for "your base is under attack" voice line, but a music change! It totally changes how it feels when you raise your under attack!
