Have you been playing and enjoying Sins 2? How would you rate it with your gaming critic hat on? Also, where do you think the fault lies for the stealth launch fiasco and the subsequent lingering 5/10 stain on the game?
As someone who played hundreds of hours of Rebellion because of the mods, I quite like the game even without the fanboying. It has all the QoL things i always wanted in the first game, it will get a Campaign for more Singleplayer stuff and they are actively working on more wanted features and balancing. With the modding community already hard at work to make things like Star Trek Armada 4, fully integrated into the game from launch. There are some problems, which is a given for most games, and Advent not having been in the testing beta. They also released a map Maker almost day 1 as a mod. 8,5-9/10 for me.
I played a Soase quiet a lot. Part 2 i only have a couple of hours in. I really like a lot of the new features and changes. For example the spread of culture doesn't automaticly looses you a planet, but when facing advent it's still a threat and has to be kept in check. My main problem with Soase2 so far is the interface: I have a harder time seeing where i'm being attacked, notifications can't be pulled up again. Planet icons cover eachother up and overlap, even when only zoomed out a little bit. But those problems are relatively easyly fixed. The gameplay and all is solid and works great.
I lived the 1st game and this is even better. It's not fast, immediately accessible and takes a bit of time to learn - probably why some don't like it 🤷 I feel that although it needs some balancing, it's awesome and I hope it continues to get a lot of input
Who still uses the Epic store on purpose? Purchased Sins 2 on Steam based off the reviews on Steam. Game is great and I'm very happy with it's state upon launch on Steam. Also, don't pay attention to main stream media, especially gaming media. IGN can stuff their biased reviews.
I think it's a pretty good second iteration of the game. However, it would have been cool to see some drastic changes within it. And possibly some new revolutionary mechanics. One being for me is to physicalize the resources. where I actually have to move cargo from system to system. Then Having to actual retrofit your ships as they upgrade. I would like a more physical Tech Tree where discoveries are made on planets and that technology has to be moved to a science facility. Just clicking and waiting for something to upgrade like Harry Potter magic feels like the thing of the past one of the reasons I can't wait for Falling Frontier
At this point I'd be more surprised if people actually take IGN reviews seriously anymore. They've been doing a real good job of making themselves looks like fools in recent years
The base game is definitely far superior to the base game of Sins I. The Sins of New Eden: Rebirth mod for Sins I is still light years beyond the current status of Sins of a Solar Empire II. The devs are working on an EVE mod for Sins II. I predict that will be the new GOAT for RTS. Maybe truly better than the current GOAT, Total Annihilation.
SoSEII has good systems and are fun to play with and that is the main selling point for me. The UI/UX is fantastic to work with for an RTS. And I would class SoSE as an RTS rather than a 4X. The pace of play may be longer than your standard Starcraft microfest, but the systems are very much simplified and gamified compared to other 4Xs and even SoSE:R itself. Diplomacy between major factions is very much gone. Planets no longer have population and instead have a sterile HP bar. Fleet logistic upgrades and logistics are gone and replaced by a flat tax and a higher supply cap with no strings attached. It very much is a simplified game aiming for a faster to play at the cost of nuance and dimension. I love the game though - I don't have the time to play SoSE:R to its fullest anymore and the faster SoSEII matches let me relive some of the great memories I've had with the first iteration without as much of the time sink. It still feels like a Sins game and I'm glad it stuck to that vision.
Ignoring IGN should be a given but they still catch a bunch of traffic somehow so they should for sure update that review. That said I'm not sure which was worse for the game that review or the companies weird launch tactic, seems like a huge L and I guess we've just got to hope that they make some decent promotional material for the game when they start launching DLC or expansions for it. The mod support should give the game legs and maybe it will wind up as a game played for years by a bunch of dedicated fans despite the bungled release, these games with good mod support generally do well once they hit Steam sales & people can onboard for half the price.
Its worse than rebellion what are you talking about? Rebellion is way better and has more features and feels better. The feel is all that matters. It's entertainment.
waited for steam release too. its a great sequel. kept all of the stuff rebellion had, and iterated or added a ton of new bits. i totally agree it needs more stuff. i was not happy that there was already 4 dlc options that had to be bought all at once. i would like to buy them individually. but ive already seen a star wars mod, and i am beyond hyped for some full blown conversion to come out. never give ign the benefit of the doubt, they are a cancer on the industry. your own review i take with much more weight.
All the DLC options don't exist right now either as far as I can tell, so it's like paying for them in the future. I've seen it described as more like a season pass. Shrug, I guess it's the way of things nowdays but it certainly damages goodwill imo
Good review! and great info on the backdrop of what has been going on with Sins2. Glad the steam reviews have been great though, have been enjoying this title.
Oh yea they said they are making a 4rth race. I hope they update the whole game when they do that because i don't like it. But like rebellion, it will take me 100 hours to get used to it. And they kept updating rebellion years on as well.
I love the game. I looked at reviews and saw that the complaints were about the game being too similar to the first, but with better graphics. 😅 That sold me right away. Lol
I bought the original shortly after launch in 2008 by complete coincidence and loved it ever since. I didnt even know I wanted a second one until I read about and finally played it. God its more than I even wished for in so many ways. Few minor issues here and there but easily a 9 out of 10. So much ease of use and so many improvements while still staying true to the original games in all ways that matter. Its not stellaris and it doesnt want to be. Its just a great game that isnt short but cuts down greatly on the time you need for other 4x games.
I've been playing Sins since the OG release on CD....years before Rebellion dropped. Sins has always released in a "polished but minimal" state. If you compare SoSE1 release to SoSE1 Rebellion final build you'll see just how much content Ironclad is likely going to add to this game. The IGN article was witten by someone that played the Epic store version, not the Steam release version...as such their review is useless and I'm surprised IGN even went with it.
very pleased with the game so far, and currently it gives a very similar experience to SOASEI. I.e. an actual sequel not a bunch of toxic wokesters trying to reinvent stuff and fucking it up in the process. Looking at how SOASE I progressed (i.e. with additions/expansions to the game) i am hopeful that this is going to progress on a similar path and will be a game that still will be enjoyable in 10 years time. The UI and controls are a step up from SOASE I once you get used to it more. But it is a bit overwhelming at the start. Make the first games against easy AI and take your time. Graphics are georgeous even on a 3 year old workstation laptop with mediocre graphics hardware. Game runs smoothly. The only thing is balancing might be slightly unpolished, no doubt this is going to be tackled in the future. Agreed that diplomacy is a bit of a step down from Rebellion, really hope there are going to be more options later agreed. Also agree with 8 out of 10. I personally would give it 8.5 to 9 Looking forward to seeing a campaign and the other DLCs...

Its not as good as rebellion at first. Way more things that are cool in rebellion. Idk where my $80 bucks went. I hope they update it soon. Rebellion is amazing and it got updates years later which made it way better.
Guy probably didn't play it long enough. This game offers so much more while doing away with unnecessary micromanagement. I would've loved an extra race but the game is solid and extremely optimized.
People say it's more like a season pass. It's on the Steam Page. As far as I can tell right now you get very little extra but when those planned features do release they're part of your Premium Edition purchase.
@@Ianbus123 yeah, knowing that. Honestly I'd throw a little salt their way too. These shouldn't be behind a paywall. At most I suppose the extra race but campaign? Extra ships? That's a little f'd and us fans should be a little up in arms about it
big flaw in the game is when you survey planets in bulk, its like being a a group text, units across all faction are about the same, (anti fight ship, missile boat, repair ship, heavy hitter, cannon fodder, and then one maybe unique gimmick ship). Can't seem to make the tech tree be in the same order across faction even if its literally the same tech ie, improving your crystal extraction for advent is at the bottom where for TEC its at the top, can't set target list class priorities, nothing like seeing a big gun get auto used on a small ship for no reason.
Game looks fun, but screw buying just a fraction of a whole game for $50. At $60 for the whole package (even if DLC isn't out yet) would be ballpark fair, but I'm a hard no with their current fleecing model.
The game is great but when you start upping the difficulty of the AI to unfair and beyond the defense options start running out when the enemy has several hundred point fleets in the first 20 minutes. The strongest strategy is to try and ally the enemy as soon as possible so you can build up your fleet in peace. It makes team fights harder in comparison since you can't do that.
Give it a shot. I loved the 1st one, and SOSE 2 is a great improvement. Some people feel that they should have changed more, but for me, the game feels very different. Planet expansions are totally different, and the special material needed for capitalships totally changes the fleet economy. Also, the changing phaselanes force you to be more careful with fleet placement and defensive infrastructure. The improved engine will give us great mods.
