Brand New LIRR Ballast Hoppers at Deer Park
Short clip I felt like uploading, yesterday I made a last minute decision to see this work train out of Fresh Pond and it certainly paid off. When I arrived at the station I was greeted by this decent sized ballast train with 20 brand new hoppers, LI 6164 through 6183, touching Long Island soil for the first time. Accidentally ended the video a bit too early, not my greatest camerawork but oh well.

LIRR RF-1 Arriving in Greenport
Переглядів 48921 день тому
On a windy November afternoon I got word of an unusual work move heading out to Greenport, and as soon as I clocked out of work I started heading East to try and catch it. I was running behind and losing hope by the second until eventually I spotted them in Cutchogue, so I quickly pulled off at one of my favorite spots seen in the first shot. From there the chase was fairly straightforward out ...
Midnight Laser Train at FOX
Переглядів 162Місяць тому
As the clock struck midnight and the local drunks started making their way home, I took my place on the platform and setup to see an Eastbound laser train tuck into the siding at FOX interlocking. Instead of waiting for locals in front of the 2-2E signal they had stopped in the station, so I was able to get a good look at the technology used to burn the leaf residue off the tracks. Taken Nov 3,...
Friday Autumn Extras on The Long Island Railroad
Переглядів 216Місяць тому
Last Friday was a great day on the island for work extras and fall foliage. In today’s video we chase a small concrete tie train coming back from Port Jeff, seen at Greenlawn, Cold Spring Harbor, and Syosset, with some locals passing by in between. Shortly after I headed South to Farmingdale and set up on the mainline near BETH interlocking, where a massive rail reclaim and laser train would pa...

This week New York & Atlantic Railway's RS40 serenaded the Port Jeff branch with a pitch-perfect K5LA/P01235 combo, coming from a classic MP15AC/GP38-2 consist. I couldn't get enough of these horns so I decided to chase from Cold Spring Harbor to Northport and back again, towards the middle of the video I included the delivery to Kleet Lumber in Huntington. Quite a treat to see 151 nose out on ...

Yesterday was an odd day for the Port Jeff branch after the Nissequogue River created storm-related flooding near Smithtown. The branch was essentially split in half for the entirety of the day, trains were shuttling from Smithtown to Port Jeff while regular service from the mainline ended at Kings Park. This was especially interesting during the PM rush, where all Eastbound trains from the cit...

DM30AC Lite Move to Port Jeff

I've pretty much seen it all when it comes to this railroad - rescue moves, tripleheaders, and the strangest consists you could possibly think of, but this has always been something I've wanted to catch that I can finally check off the list. Here's LIRR 509 running lite out to Port Jeff without any sort of accompaniment whatsoever, not even an MP15AC on the rear. Managed to chase it from Greenl...

Return of the Prime 990

New York & Atlantic GP38-2 #268 makes its first appearance on the Port Jeff branch after being rebuilt in the shops. The PM990 horn was painted red as a tribute to a former LIRR shop foreman, who requested the same to be done on the LIRR geeps in the 90's. Albeit a bit choked, it's always nice to hear the 990 instead of the standard Nathan horns nowadays. Got some great videos scheduled for thi...

Just when I thought I've seen it all... Tonight was quite the unfortunate night for the Port Jeff branch, all starting with 657 breaking down in Kings Park. I had been waiting for about four hours when the rescue engine finally arrived, a...

    As a LIRR commuter, I would wait at Jamaica for the transfer to the diesel train and watched these beasts pull in. The engine would create sound waves that when standing near them, would vibrate your body. It was awesome to experience their sound and power.

    The Via Rail 692/693 between Winnipeg and Churchill in Manitoba has a really beautiful chord. That chord is C, D# and A# (C, D sharp and A sharp AKA C, E flat and B flat). This chord means so much to me because of my amazing trip I took to Churchill with some of my closest friends, and the first trip I went on post pandemic and my first time on a train since 2001.

    I tried to build this but on the LCD screen I get no readout. any suggestions?

    • @LIRRTV
      @LIRRTV 3 місяці тому

      Couple of things I would look for first: - Double check that you have solid connections going to the correct pins on the Arduino - are you testing on a solderless breadboard? - Does the LCD display show anything at all? If so try adjusting the contrast using the potentiometer and see if you can read it better. - Are you able to compile/upload the whole sketch to the Arduino?

    • @danpickle7398
      @danpickle7398 3 місяці тому

      @@LIRRTV yes I am using a bread board to test first! :) The screen illuminates however turning the pot up and down there is no difference in illumination. The code did say that it completed the upload with no errors

    • @LIRRTV
      @LIRRTV 3 місяці тому

      Interesting, well it's a good sign that it at least compiles and uploads with no errors. Likely just a hardware issue. I've found that sometimes I needed to hit the reset button on the Mega after I gave it power, maybe give that a try. It's the button right next to the USB port. Are you using an LCD with 16 pins like the tutorial or the other simplified type with less pins?

    • @danpickle7398
      @danpickle7398 3 місяці тому

      @LIRRTV I actually have both styles of LCD but just to get it working I am using the 16 pin like in the video. Using another arduino I have verified the lcd works with the hello world code

    • @LIRRTV
      @LIRRTV 3 місяці тому

      Hm, odd. LCD should be using pins 22, 6, 5, 25, 4, and 26 going back to the Mega. When the screen is illuminated, is it displaying white boxes instead of text or nothing at all? On my previous build attempts if I had something anywhere that was wired incorrectly it would mess with the LCD and the rest of the project, it would be worthwhile to double check all of your connections instead of just what's going to the LCD. If you have it connected to the speaker already, can you hear any buzzing coming from it? If it still isn't working shoot me an email at lirrtv9@gmail.com with some pics of your wiring and I can help you out some more.

    Russ and I are attempting to build the detector. Your YT video computer screen showed that you compiled it on an ESP32 Dev Module - were you successful? I've tried for 2 days to get the proper libraries or mod the libraries to work on an ESP32. Question: is the SD card an I2C or SPI? That is the only item I'm missing in inventory.

    • @LIRRTV
      @LIRRTV 4 місяці тому

      This code was written specifically for an Arduino Mega 2560, as far as I'm aware it will not work with an ESP32. I've tried to compile to an ESP32 before and the libraries seemed to be incompatible. The dropdown in the section where I explain my code just shows the ESP32 Dev Module because it was the most recent thing I had compiled to on that pc, not what I used for this specific project. In terms of the SD card, I'm just using a SanDisk 4GB Micro SDHC. I believe it's actually the one that came with my Nintendo Switch before I replaced it for a larger one lol

    Might attempt this build. Sounds like it would make for an interesting add on to a session. I do have a question about the lcd, why did you choose the more complicated version? The version with the integrated daughter board would have reduced the wire count by using the 5vdc, gnd, scl and sda (also lcd contrast control integrated) instead of all the additional wires?? I don't know programming, so maybe it was easier your way. I'm a hardware guy...lol

    • @LIRRTV
      @LIRRTV 4 місяці тому

      That specific lcd was the only one I had laying around at the time, I realized it was more complicated but didn’t really feel like finding another one lol. Would’ve been the same results either way, I suppose I just gave myself more work instead of spending like 6 bucks on another one. You might be the first person to try the build besides myself - let me know if you go for it! I’m curious to see if I made a good enough tutorial for others to understand. If you have any questions feel free to ask here and I can help you out with whatever you need. Or if you see room for improvement I’m always open to suggestions. Good luck!
