A Unique Rescue Operation at Smithtown

- Earlier today train 6614's equipment failed between Smithtown and St. James, which shut down a portion of the branch until a rescue engine could arrive. About an hour later, the next Eastbound train 6650 made its revenue stop at Smithtown, and received orders to couple to the disabled train ahead and tow them back into Smithtown station. The equipment was dropped off at the platform so passengers could board train 6650, which circled around the disabled set and continued East to Port Jeff. Moments later rescue engine 164 arrived to drag the set back to the shops, and I ended up chasing them to a spot just East of DUKE just for the fun of it.
Catching these rescue moves has become pretty routine for me lately, too bad this one didn't have another startup sequence...

Incredible compilation of footage, especially with 404 in the middle of it all.
it had to be 404.. nice catch.!!!!
With all the problems LIRR has with the dual mode diesels and their unwillingness to electrify the entire network, I'm surprised they haven't considered running DMUs in their diesel territory. At least on a DMU if you have an engine failure you have extra engines in the consist so you can keep going just with slower acceleration.
Great video! And the LIRR crews appear to have done a great job! But, this junker fleet is living on borrowed time.
Thanks, yea the crews did a great job as always. A few recognized me from previous rescue moves lol
Excellent catch!
Thanks!
I see them towing 512 a lot
Very very cool
Wow that was complicated. Seems the diesel electrics are prone to breakdowns? Great catch.
That Should Add a Second Track in Bay Port
LIRR should have kept all their GP38's & MP15's. These DE-30's have been plagued with problems from the very beginning.
Nice work.
Appreciate it my friend
A bunch of junk boxes they made brother
Is this before the schedule change or sum or was it on a weekend

its beyond time to just third rail the entire system and get rid of these POS unreliable diesels
Nice job
