Wibbly Wobbly Idiot Vision

English bloke who's been living in the French Alps for the past 20 years, I like buggering about with old machines, and learning stuff. A software engineer by trade, but I've also been a house painter, chairlift driver, motorcycle courier, industrial mechanic, professional juggler, and electrician, amongst other things.
What I'm most definitely not, is adept with a camera. You'll get wibbly wobbly handheld stuff, lack of focus, wavery focus, pointing at the wrong thing, lots of umms and errs. You get what you pay for :)
My name's not really Michel, it's an old handle I used for scambaiting back in the day - M.Auron = "moron", and having a thick, Clouseau-esque french accent on the phone allowed me to close conversations with "fuck you very much".

Precision Bench Stones on the super cheap
Переглядів 49114 днів тому
Back to some machine related stuff today as a break from my continuous whining. I've needed a precision bench stone for a while now, but they are very expensive - I'd have to spend more for a pair than I spent on the mill and lathe combined. So here's 3 very flat stones for 3 euros. Downsides to this approach are that I have no idea of the dimensional stability of super cheap whetstones, they'r...

This one is direct for @BikesofRye , who just blocked me from his channel, the shining little wit. I've tried to be more or less positive, or at least helpful, in every comment I've made on his videos, but little queeny touchytits takes any sort of criticism as though it was a kick to the bollocks, and obviously it's all down to that nasty Matt Hudson, @dirtygarageguy rather than Ryan having ma...

Another bit of a rant of a video, mainly aimed at the sort of people who are making lazy and very poorly researched videos to cash in on a tragedy. Yes, a tragedy. After all, surely PH Nargeolet, who'd been down a load of times, could have given up his place for Elon Musk or Mark Zuckerberg. In this case, my spleen is vented towards a man who has absolutely missed the possibility of making some...

OK, back to mucking about in dangerous holes. This is a part of the first of the well known slate mines in the area - I bottled going into the crawl parts (of which there are 3) because I was absolutely on my own and nobody knew where I was. There's another 2 on this site, one of which was in my frst video and the other of which I did today, but it was pretty much without interest. Then there's...

A first fire up of the gear pair on my in-progress milling head. Somewhat fraught, if it was wrong this could have done quite a bit of damage. The driving gear is keyed onto the horizontal shaft, the vertical gear is running free on the milling spindle for the moment. The horrible welds are horrible, but they were only tacks to hold stuff in place whilst I did more horrible welds on the back side.

After watching Craig Jones and Matt Hudson diving into horrible slate mines, I thought I'd do some slate mine urbex of my own. I didn't get very far because my mate failed to turn up, which meant I was both underequipped, and, more important, alone. However, as I didn't go very far in, I had enough time to explore further and manage to find some largely unknown slate workings - not marked on an...

Roman dodecahedra are a curious phenomena, not many of them have been found and apart from the fact they are from the Roman period, they are dodecahedral, and made of bronze, nobody really knows all that much about their intended use (if any). Apart from @Matt.Geevan Well, that's not entirely true. Matt has a theory about what they are for, and while it is vastly better than the glove knitting ...

Thanks, always wondered if it was feasible to do that for reasonably flat stones. Cheers
I wasn't sure at first, but after practising I got myself a set of precision house bricks; that was proof it could work...
Try using 'Patio Cleaner'. Its about 20% w/w and available from BQ and Wynstays as cattleyard disinfectant . Works at treat on deep corrosion and neutralised with tap water and bi-carb from Aldi . can be diluted to 5% and still works fine .
Cool, thanks for that

@wibblywobblyidiotvision It isn't stoneing to remove high spots, it's just taking minute burs off!

Yes and yes. ua-cam.com/video/ZpecrMlaBgU/v-deo.html
Reading your discussion with a spanish comment writer. My cnc copy assuming it to be accurate in size to the original, is based on the roman measurement system standardized under Aggripa. This is not remarkable given their time of production. Mine has three holes based within plus minus 0.2mm of a roman finger which i take to be so small as to be the same size. The ring pattern does not distinguish between these holes merely reflects the pattern on the others. The lost wax technique back then would left hidden casting flaws which make the item prone to fracture, particularly when full of coins and thrown or rolled. Given the workmanship and expense ,seems more of a cherished item with a lighter work load. That being said, if you fashion a light weight ball and squeeze it through the larger hole you have a caged ball capable of being rolled on a cloth or specially prepared leather surface which would increase roll ability whilst reducing nodule wear owing to the reduced incidents of sliding and attrition or abrasion. When the ball rolls or settles into the base hole of differing sizes , you can invent a gambling or prediction game to suit like a dice. The 3 similar sized holes mean you get another roll or forfeit all as they occur more often. The presence of 3 similar holes makes the need for 12 sides almost redundant except in the above tenuously described circumstance or use. Have all other examples duplicate holes like mine ? Any solution to date suffers from explaining why in the cosmopolitian widely travelled roman world and military servicemen, serving in far flung places ,taken from all the provences, this object centres todate on spain france and to a lesser extent Britain. Germany has no known finds and they kept a presence there after Armenius so that does not explain its absence just reduced frequency. One last thing. When measuring this thing, the absence of meaningful marks makes hole identification very difficult and not as easy as you think , external labelling avoids repeatly searching the missed holes. Imagine inserting a plug or staff into a hole corresponding to July for instance with holes so similar. Not practical.
All good questions and commentary. I have no real idea what the object might have been used for, and it certainly seems to have had a use, but I haven't seen a theory that holds water yet.
I believe if a man can built it, another skilled man can repair it. If a man has designed it then it answers a functional need which we at times in our history we needed. As we are fundamently the same then i believe we can fathom why and for what. Exception is ,'Art'. For symbolism we can understand an artists meaning but modern art as opposed to cubism for example , usually requires the artist to verbally explain what the hell he has created and what it means! I think that defeats the purpose of visual Arts. This object is distributed extensively in Spain and France and so therefore their need or use of this bloody object lies there in their cultural habits. I will keep looking but so much archaeological context of finds is hidden from us mere mortals and dribbled out to us when they have a narative prepared( and a Phd) that we are forced to base our conclusions on partial data. Ever onwards then !
@@saturnfivetwo4 I'm still not sure that it had a functional purpose. The wear planes on the knobs pointed out by Alejandro certainly indicate this. A major difficulty in identifying these is that they are almost always found out of /any/ context, and when found in context that only really shows that they were valued objects. I certainly don't buy the frankly tin foil hat idea that some institutional "they" are hiding or selectively releasing information to push a narrative. It makes no sense. I think there's just so little context available that all guesses are just that - guesses.
@wibblywobblyidiotvision Hi. As a craftsman in many fields i have come up with a solution which i have rejected because of unnecassary over complication of a craft that continues to this day and they have never felt the need for such an object ,though it could perform this task. I have after extensive research which largely for me is going over old ground ,come to the conclusion that i believe i know what it is and was used for. I will not bore you with this unless you want to hear my explanation. I am not interested in the to and fro of modern social media without research and sadly as yet no 'kilroy was here' has been found , YET. I am now satisfied that i know where it fits in the roman era 100ad to 400ad. Best regards
@@saturnfivetwo4 Definitely interested in what you think.
I would like Matt to be right, but i feel he is forcing his evidence to fit his theory. I used Euclid and other methods to create the pentagon on the disc ,and found so many problems , not least the distortion that you cannot claim what he wishes. To attempt to prove the pin holes were part of the construction process was a mistake as his method proves the scribe holes are in the wrong place even if this was not the side the craftsman began from. His own scribe marks tell you where 1 important mark should be ,the other on the lost half. Joining dots to the corners they are in the wrong place try the method for yourself as he did it. I looked into the coins and he has cherry picked the best one but the others on line make it clear this is not always a pentagon with 5 rays. Further he claims its at the bow when his last coin choice its at the stern on a well known style of warship which leaves us to conclude he does not know his roman history as well as he states or he is massaging the symbolic shape to fit. This is not a bash Matt comment. Its a shame hes being drawn into the world of pseudo science to support his theory whilst claiming he is an ex engineer. I have measured my own copy of said item and researched but i can say that my dive experience on known and unkown roman wrecks in the med. ,that the chances of a copper based item , allegedly on all ships of the line, not turning up, is a good argument for thinking differently. The hub of all military itelligence is Italy from campaign to political take over and despite the wealth of sites not to mention naval men around pompey , no finds. I appreciated your video as it is so frustrating to listen to someone measure the 'right length ' base line to prove the angle of inclination of the pyramid as we do not know the intended exact angle. Purely an analogy. No smoke , no mirrors only proven pseudo science. I hope someone finds the answer before i die.
I forgot to mention that having found an ancient ships bilge pump roman circa 50bc to 100 ad , the wooden disc of vindalanda reminds me of a piston seal leather disc support plate for a water pump clearly based on land at a fort or nearby.
Glad I don't owe you any money Si. 😀😀😀
Hah! Would you rather I come after you with the rusty scythe, or the big rusty saw? Previously I'd have used the big frickin' ladder, but my back's not up to it any more.
I would think Matt's theory still works in that a commander would 'order' only the amount of coders/decoders that would be needed. Say he orders 24 and these are all cast identical, so that only his command has the proper coder/decoders that would all match in size. So that another command has their coder/decoders cast a bit different in size, so that they will only work within the command. In other words, the found coder/decoders would vary in size and specs, yet they all work as long as they all come from the same casting.
That simply doesn't fit with the way we know the Roman military worked. There's a helluva lot of things we don't know about the Romans, but they documented the military extensively. The kind of autonomy and trust that would be required to give garrison commanders the right to use coded messages nobody else could read did not exist.
One moron critiquing another moron. Classic.
It's morons all the way down.

Very nice work sir.
I add: Costa Melas already had a video about the geographical distribution of the Celtic language, with the same title, except for Part 2, from 5 years ago, it seems that he has updated it and released it a few days ago. From what I have seen superficially, he is an apparently serious content producer. Obviously, an in-depth study on the distribution of Celtic languages would require a doctoral thesis, which possibly exists and is in the public domain.
Hi Simon, while I was talking about the Dodeca, I came across an interesting and curious video, about the distribution of Celtic languages throughout history: "History of the Celtic Languages Part 2 P/Q hypothesis" by Costa Melas. ua-cam.com/video/dMglMnPciUk/v-deo.htmlsi=uHkCwakktaSfohoC You can see that the distribution of Celtic languages during the 1st to 4th centuries coincides with the area of discovery of the Dodecas, according to the map in the video "Roman Dodecahedron/ New Proposed. Theories, History, Description dnd Other" at minute 14:57. ua-cam.com/video/G4-XDQkoywQ/v-deo.htmlsi=RTOZArndvDWVmCet Videos and written information have been talking about the Celtic influence, but this video is significant, and its author is "covering his back" by saying hypotheses. Greetings. Alejandro.
Very nice work sir. Netjies.

Hello Wibbly Wobbly, I liked the second part of your video. The bucket reminded me of my time as an apprentice in a steam locomotive repair shop, carpentry, fitting, forging, welding, sheet metal,... In fitting we had to make a bucket, out of steel, it's not easy at all, I recently made it out of wood, obviously it has nothing to do with steel, I gave it to my brother, on one side I wrote with the pyrograph: I am from olive wood / They call me bucket / Hand made / I look perfect. At the end of the three years of apprenticeship, the company gave us the toolbox that each of us had built. This was many years ago and it seems like yesterday. Regarding the first part, I will tell you that I am aware of your video: "On the importance of doing your research..." I am totally convinced that in all of UA-cam there is no hypothesis as detailed and explained, about the Roman dodecahedron, as that of Alexander, whether he is right or not, but I think he is somewhat right.
Very nice work sir
Now there's posh !
Groovy
So, because he was in error about a piece of binned wood, his entire hypothesis is rubbish? I am sorry, but that does not follow. Matt may indeed be wrong about the dodecahedron, but not for reason outlined in this video.
Of course that doesn't follow, but that's not what I'm arguing. I've already (politely, as strange as that may sound) given a number of well reasoned arguments, with references, outlining why his hypothesis is fanciful at best - I was banned from his channel for doing so. He's now latched onto the vindolanda disk as somehow being a proof of his theory, despite there being no link to the dodecahedra, and evident issues of scale; it's fancy on fancy, a layer cake of self delusion. All the while wanking on about the scientific method despite doing the absolute opposite of that, and wielding the ban hammer if he's called on it. That's proper delusionsal wanker behaviour, but that's not the worst of it. What's really fucking sad about the whole deal is that he may have uncovered something extremely interesting and potentially quite important, but he's just walking on past it because he's so invested in his delusion. I'll drop you an invoice for using my cock measuring joke, my licensing terms are very reasonable :)
Trees have now evolved to have fertilizer delivered to their doorstep !

Hello Wibbly. (Translated by Google Translator) First of all, I have to tell you that I have two videos on UA-cam with a theory about the dodeca and the icosa. Secondly, I have to tell you that I posted a comment to Matt on his video "Solved! The Enigma of the..." three days ago and I'm surprised that he doesn't appear. Vacation, prior control? Thirdly, I would like to congratulate you on your interest in methodically delving into the evidence. As soon as I saw the wooden semicircle, I had the feeling that the measurements did not correspond; with several screenshots, from several photos, to minimize errors, the angles of the two holes gave me three measurements: 76°, 77° and 78.6°. My analysis is crude, rude, but 5° of difference seems significant to me. The radial distances from the center to the two holes gave me 34 mm for the one on the right and 37 mm for the one on the left, although my analysis is very rough, a 10% difference in the two radii also seems significant to me (The differences in the perpendicularity of the semicircle with the camera lens do not seem sufficient to admit these differences in measurements). Regarding the small diameter and the square shape of the two holes, one could always argue that it was unfinished. On June 29, I sent a rather long email to Matt at "matt.geevan@...", comparing his hypothesis with mine, from which I received no reply. I wrote it to him in Spanish, given the length. (I use Google Lens), if it is short, like this one, I translate it knowing that nuances are lost. My two videos appear on UA-cam with photos of the dodeca, icosa, with coins and my hypothesis is that it is a drum with coins that is thrown on a table with the sides protected. I think I'm not mistaken in saying that I'm the only one who proposes a hypothesis for icosa. Greetings from Spain.
Hello. Thanks for the interest, even if I'm being a bit negative. Do you want me to go and tear holes in your theory too? I do actually have a theory as to what these might be, but as it's based on gut feel, and is in any case absolutely unprovable, I don't think it's worth going into.
@@wibblywobblyidiotvisionSecond attempt. Indeed, you are right, you would do me a favor if you made some good shots. I have seen some of your videos, I would not think of arguing with you, unless you asked me a non-rhetorical question, but I am sure I would learn something. Several things if you decided to shoot: my first video lasts 20' 26" the second 17' 53", it would be preferable to see the second. With all reservations, I propose in a comment on this second video, to use mass spectrometry to search for gold or silver molecules and I know that this is swampy ground. But the main thing is the main idea and not the details. You would do me a favor if you spend a few minutes and give me some ideas. And if you decline, I am still grateful for your current answer. @@jandroblanco6789 Sure, please drop me an email with links. I'll be happy to watch both videos anyway, I'm not that busy. that said, it might take a couple of days to get back to you. A new theory on an interesting subject is always interesting, regardless of how off the wall it might seem. Matt's ideas are interesting, for example, no matter how wrong I think he is. And reasoned argument is how we advance ideas, so please feel free to argue against any points I might make. That, I think, is where Matt breaks down - he fails to engage those making criticisms.

Aluminium 'stock'???? Bloody Americanisms.
What would you prefer? Material would work, I guess.
@@wibblywobblyidiotvision Material or sheet.
@@HeathLedgersChemist Well, it's not sheet, is it? It's not immaterial, though, so I guess it must be material. But I had it in stock. Thing is, I can't really agree with "stock" being an americanism. At least not a modern one, as I've always heard "stock" being used to refer to raw materials in a machining context. So I did a bit of searching. Atkins' "Workshop Practice" from 1929 refers to "stock" repeatedly, for example: "It is obvious that if the parting tool had a form on its side that would produce the round head in one operation, there would be considerable load on the tool as it nears the centre of the work, so, as the pip which holds it to the stock would be very small, the screw would break off before half the head had been formed."
