Surgeon Fishing
New Zealand
Приєднався 19 вер 2021
Surgeon fishing is a New Zealand based fishing channel. Our focus is on the Twizel and Tekapo canals ecosystem. Our goal is to show the world the beautiful rivers, lakes, and canals that New Zealand has to offer. Aerial footages from our drone help anglers survey the area as part of their planning before making that trip.
We do primarily fly fishing, inventing and tying our own unique flies that works.

I love that place it's cold 🥶
Hi, good vid, very informative, i fish the canals quite a bit, ill give your tips ago, thanks.
Fishes, deers and mooses
We ate that fish, I think we did say we took it home for dinner
hey nice vid just want to say one thing not trying to put you down or anything but it triggered me when you picked the secound fish up by the lip because it can break there jaws and prevent them from being able to eat therefor they could die.
Are you deaf lol he ate it I think a broken jaw is the least of it's worries
Brilliant! Standing room only….is that a S A accent I hear? …thanks.
10/10 yum
Nice. I’ve always wondered about the Epic fly rods: are the blanks translucent / partially see-through or painted opaque with a high transparency varnish coating on top?
They are opaque with a clear epoxy coating
How long do you let the bamboo dry, or do you start assembling it immediately after sawing it off?
I think it was over a week

Thanks for the heads up on the cramps I did Jindabyne on the end of 2024 school holidays I got cramps also but I only got 14 ks in and a nice brown to make the day
Hi I have never known of this six foot track but I have been to other places and different names,if you are on your own all the time you go fly maybe we could camp and do some fly together, thanks for your video
I’m back in NZ now - bigger fish and better rivers here 👌
Enjoy your video's, had a chance to fish Ohau C canal last November, while on vacation from Ireland, i was lucky landed a double figure brown that took my dry fly while crusing the margins
I am glad you discussed "bend" with respect to full-flex, fiberglass fly rods. The image of the "C" shape used to maintain line tension is essential for landing hard fighting fish. Occasionally, I perform some "long distance" releases due to not maintaining proper line tension. Great video and discussion. Any tips or suggestions are appreciated. Sub'd.
That fish is a sculpin
Thank you for the video Doc I hope you can keep them coming as they are informative for many of us who are starting this beautiful sport. See you at the river and tight lines forever
Cheers mate good luck
Great job
Hey bro, I am about to get my second set of fly fishing combo, I intend to get a combo that is specific for streamer flys, do you recommend fly line with a sinking tip or a complete sinking line? I am very undecided at the moment. Would a fly line with a sinking tip perform better in the canals for streamers? Thanks in advance for your reply.
Sinking tip only if you’re going for the fish deep in the channel or salmon, otherwise it is very hard to cast and keep moving. I just go with standard floating line, and 9-12 leader - maxima 10lb -12lb then taper down to 3X tippet (8lb). Maybe a 6-7 weight set would be better if you’re making it a streamer combo
Love your videos Doc. I often use a black wooly bugger or black & red fuzzy wuzzy when the sun is going down. You can also use them on a thread line with a couple of shot or a small barrel weight. After dark it can be great fishing.
Great video and good information.
Thank you
I was there this afternoon trying and failing to fish the canals 😅
It’s tough fishing. I was there on Saturday and only got 2 fish in 3 hours- very tough
The spookiest fish, you literally have to be a ninja
Thanks Sheng, might have to try that this winter.
Yes good winter sport
Great video Doc..will be there in 3 weeks today!!..keep up the great vidz
Great video, very informative and down to earth. Well done!
Fly fish around Twizel 3 times a year ex Sydney..a great part of the world..thank you Doc..we should fish there one day soon together.
Shoot me a message next time you’re here
Impressive trout bro, may I please know what rapala were you using, the CD series?
Sorry bro I can’t remember exactly which one - I had like 3 boxes of rapala - usually a sinking one works best
Most people don’t use the welded loops correctly. You are supposed to make sure the handshake knot is completely tightened and flattened out. I use blood knot leaders made with a butt section of 30 lb. Maxima, and with a perfection loop. This works for line weights 4-7 (go with 40 lb butt section 8 wt and above, and a 25 lb. butt section for 3 wt). If it’s tightened completely, no loss in energy transfer and no noticeable hinging.
nice edit
Awesome! Now get some big bamboo and make a split cane rod!
You have captured of flyfishing in this video. It's less about pulling fish in, and much much more about the setting, the search for that special fish, analysis of how to test your skins and knowledge to induce a take. Well done
Well Played 👏👏👏 Tight Lines Fella 💪🏼
Where is this?
Canterbury in NZ
@@SurgeonFishingThank you! Beautiful
Thanks for a good video and description.
I have found that these maxcatch glass rods are better at lower wt. my steelhead rod is a 6wt s-glass has a similar feel to a 7wt graphite rod which is kind of unforgiving. I now own a maxcatch unic 5wt and all i can say is wow, this is a medium speed, full bend, well balanced rod....like a traditional glass rod of the past. if your not in love with the cheaper glass rods they offer, try the unic, it casts similarly to redington butterstick, echo bad ass glass or orvis superfine glass.
ha! i was doing so much research around the unic and there is barely anything out there. I wanted the 4 wt but in the end I ordered the 3 wt glass overlined with 4wt line because I just didn't trust the unic bend to be full or not. I asked customer service so many times but the communication barrier between languages got me no where. On the product page it says the unic is fast action and you say medium. Maybe I will get a unic later on thanks for the info.
When was this
Do you know why some of them have the red or orange spots?
What stream
Gun vid
This is a classic kind of spot in NZ where you drive all the way up the valley, walk up the river, and find ten thousand bootprints...
You will NOW!
It just adds a carbon fiber grip based on the G series? No other upgrades?
Nope no other upgrades
How do you feel about using black manba? I also want to buy one, but the official website seems not to be able to ship to China. I didn’t find China in the country options, I only saw Hong Kong.
That’s exactly it. Nothing else
I love it. The grip is super confortable.
Dawg is that central Oregon? Id love to fish with you if so.
Nice. I've been enjoying your stuff SF. Nice to see low-key stuff from NZ that still gets great fish. It is addictive, eh? 🙂 Hope you keep 'em coming. Have a great year in '24. Cheers from across the ditch. PP
Thanks PP. where across the ditch are you based? I was living in sydney for a year last season.
@@SurgeonFishing G'day! Yeah, I saw your stuff around Lithgow. We are near Wollongong, fish mainly around Lithgow/Oberon and the Snowies. Fishing has been great over here for the last 3yrs or so, lots of rain. Really love to get a sense of a rough area you are in, it's nice to see different parts of NZ. Such a great country. Your rod looks unusual?? Keep 'em coming and let us know if you are back over here and need a lift! Cheers PP
It’s a carbon fibre wrap rod, known as the Epic Black Mamba made in NZ.
@@SurgeonFishing Thanks. Looks interesting. I thought it was an epic. I'll check it out. Always intersting to see things a bit out of the ordinary. Have a great year. PP
How do you know when the have taken the fly
It’s a dry fly, can see it from the surface
I should of taken my rod when I was their the other day
Devastating 🫨 Well done for still landing the fish though lol. Tight Lines Fella 💪🏼
I guess my questions are answered. Sorry about the drone.
Apparently it still works!
Merry Christmas! I was just researching about using the Hover X1 for just the same application (fly fishing) and your video is the only one on UA-cam that I could find. Great video too. I was wondering how that selfie drone would react flying over water and then I saw that orbit shot and also the bird's-eye shot in your intro (over water) ... looks great! Could you share some more of your experience so far with the Hover X1? Appreciate it. Thanks.
Lesson one with drone ownership....Do not fly over water
Cracking Brownie... Tight Lines Fella 💪🏼
