My new album, TRINITRON I is now available on Bandcamp. saint-samuel.bandcamp.com/ TRINITRON I Produced entirely on a Tascam Portastudio 424, using all sorts of analog and digital synths, reel-to-reel tape machines, cassette tape recorders and whatnots. Recorded between March 2020 and April 2023 in Montreal. Some drum tracks and percs were recorded in New York around 2012/2013. "In Technicolor"...

Yes ! Let's stay creative, even when you have to pack all your things to a new location! This is what's going on right now: I have lots of things to record and produce though, at the same time, I'm building a new studio and will be moving real soon. Just before leaving this place, let's get to it and make some noise!

I found an old track on my reel to reel and it triggered new ideas. I love finding things I left behind for a long while and then being able to complete it or, in this case, trying something new with it.

I found an old episode of the SouthBank Show about Bjork (that was broadcast in 1997) and I was very inspired by it. My first idea was to use the Yamaha QY10's sound bank all the way through in the end, I decided to go in another direction. Finally, in this video, I mentioned that I love the Prophet 08 in fact, it's my favorite polyphonic synth. I'll do a whole video about it one day. I’m currently putting the final touch to two new sets of tracks that I will release on cassette tape in the weeks to come. These are very exciting projects, I can’t wait to put them out, though they still have some missing pieces here and there... so let’s get to work ! I’m looking for high energy vibes, searching for bits with lots of groove while improvising with the AKAI S3000XL and the Prop...

Trying out new ideas with Korg's SQ-1, Volca Keys, DDD-1 drum machine and KAWAI's K4R. I may have stumbled upon something here. I went immediately to my "Sound Library on Cassette Tapes" after realizing that I should find something else to add to this track. I'll probably complete this one ! The song at the beginning and at the end : "Video Vamp" from "TELEVISION LOVERS" (lp) by "In a Dramatic ...

Sometimes, I want to write or compose but I have nothing coming to me, no idea, no inspiration whatsoever. When it's the case, I focus on doing other things. For instance, creating "tools" (i.e. little music snippets) that I could use later is a good way to spend time in the studio while doing something creative, even if I'm not working on a specific track. The result is that I now have a large...

Nice video thanks.
hey you're from montreal? that's awesome me too!
Ouep ! Je suis dans Rosemont Petite Patrie
the track @ 5:00 was soooo nice!
Thanks !
Thanks for your video and easy tutorial - took me to the next level with my new Model D 😉👍
Awesome !
2:11 Hello Stéphane, short question: Have you stopped working on this track, or is it finished somehow?
Hi ! No, I haven’t !! It’s still in the work somewhere… maybe I should go back to it ! 😀
@@StephanesCreativeBasement Well, you should. It is a great melody with serious potential.
As I'm japanese, I used to enjoy with this model in local instrument store when it's on sale. This model DDD1 and DDD5 came with super cool demo track made by KORG. That track was made using the maximum potential and capability of both models with sample sound and chop bass sound... However, I've never founded that demo track here in youtube. The problem was that the demo track was delietable for get free space in their inside memory. So the owners delieted that track.. I'l keep looking for it.
Impressive!
I have one but a few thousand miles away from me in London. Maybe one day i will get it back. Great video and tracks too.
great stuff! btw what is that little computer behind ya?
Thanks ! - Behind me it’s a Macintosh Classic.
@@StephanesCreativeBasement Cool! Do you ever use it in your music productions?
Not yet! I will have to tweak a couple things…
Great lofi beats, instant sub
fabulous!!!!
I just stumbled upon your channel today and I'm really enjoying your content. I like the way you approach story telling and creativity.
Thank you for the kind words Patrick !
Where are YOU?
Montreal, Canada
Tangerine Dream and the Beastie Boys what a marvellous mesh. I’m intrigued by your rhizomatic traversal across sound, media and hardware. Wonderful 👏 heading over to Bandcamp to listen 🎧
I use my guitar , synths mpcs everyday. I'd buy his sample or makey own with similar gear. A guitar and a sampler are the same thing when the endgame is music.
Love it snd i wanna hear more!
Everything about this guy is art. The video, the room, the music, the clothes.. very cool
Thanks ! 😀
looove this !!
Great breaks and sounds!
What cassette recorder do you use? Sounds super good
Thanks ! Texas Instrument and Radio-Shack tape recorders.
We longed for the day of a higher quality sound. Eventually, technology brought it to us. And now the norm is to take the junk that we threw away, put it in a digital La-Machine, and call ourselves....(chokes back bile)...'producers'. Not a more clear-cut case of pretentiousness have I ever seen. I mean, I have an MPC and all, but I don't take any of this seriously. My guitar and piano on the other hand....yeah. I like to play strings and keys, not record needles and pads.
Sure ! 😀 Thanks for watching !
This comment shows us that you know nothing of art or the process of creating art. I feel sorry for you and hope that one day you open your mind to the limitless possibilities of creative expression.
This worldview is just depressing. I dont understand the point in seeing it like that, using defunct equipment is just another way of exploring sound
Btw this comment is way more pretentious than the video. You know you can take your music seriously if you want to right? The last part screams insecurity, it screams "I want to take my art seriously but doing that would force me to be vulnerable in front of an audience" and you dont even need to feel like that lol you can do things in earnest without worrying about ppl's judgement
Because often, the junk sounds way, way better than a guitar and a piano.
Hakan Lidbo tweaked the shit out of the S3000XL 20-25 years ago with several hundreds of releases. He even produced Yello on it!
Your sound is amazing!❤
Thanks ! And thank you for watching !
Really like your work, good stuff!
Thanks!
Excellent, music , visuals, editing, artistic direction, mixing. Hope this means there is more to come
Thank you for your kind words. Yes, more is coming! 👍
Great video and music! Nice to have you back. It’s been too long.
Thanks Gary ! Cheers !
Man, I really wanna copy of Facade!
Hi! Thanks for watching!! Here’s a couple tracks from Façade and more: saint-samuel.bandcamp.com/album/1992-1994
Wind noise kind of ruined it at the end, but otherwise great music.
Hey man, do you mind explaining to me what you typically use for each of the 5 s3000 outputs you have going in your mixer? I recently acquired an s3000xl myself, and an old Behringer mixer 2642a. I am wondering how you do drums; is one program your drum track? Just looking for mindset and template for spltting up sounds on this thing.
Hi Patrick, mostly, I will use 5 programs with one sample each. Every programs will have its own MIDI channel AND its own output. So, MIDI 1 will go out of output 1, then route to my mixer. After that, it’s just a matter of controlling your channels with your DAW or sequencer. I hope this helps!
Love that vintage Kawai! Had to sub :)
Awesome! 👍
@StephaneRichard1 I did a video on 80s kawai budget to midrange gear. One of my first videos it really is a budget friendly Rompler ! Great video.
Awesome atmosphere.... Can I come in the analog lo-fi sect Master Stephane?
Thanks Antoine !
Great music sir 🔥🔥💯🎧
Thanks! And thank you for watching!!
@@StephanesCreativeBasement it’s like taking digital music making and having an analog approach. Using my imagination and understanding that using hardware is a bit harder but just because I’m using apps it was no cake walk either lol
Hello! If you record in 20khz (or less) and then pitch down the sample do you get those crackling crunchy artifacts??? On the MPC2000 you can only convert (re-sample) to something like 20000khz but it takes about 5 minutes. On the MPC you can only record in 44 khz
Nope. No crackiling.
O.K.,that's really strange... Because on the Boss SP-202 you can sample with 15.63 khz (lofi mode 1) and 7.81 khz (lofi mode 2) and you get that crunchy crackling gritty sound! Even more than on the Emu SP1200! So I don't understand why this shouldn't be able on the Akai when sampling with 10 khz??? Greetings from Germany
I mean it’s lofi and VERY gritty but no digital crackles.
You are very talented!
It’s very kind of you! Thanks for watching
I love these set ups but always wondered how you get around mastering. Do you just get the mix as good as possible then record to tape then done?
Well, I do all sorts of things. Sometimes I record on tape, then go in the box and mix. Other times, I record from different sources, then mix, then go out of the box to tape, import it back then go to mastering. What I lost in quality (hifi) I gain in « personality » and this is what I’m always aiming for. Thanks for watching Luc!
ok that helps. thanks for the reply. I'm going to try record to tape then back into logic for mastering. thanks@@StephanesCreativeBasement
is the sample pack still available for download?
No, sorry. Thanks for watching!
@@StephanesCreativeBasement OK, maybe it makes sense to remove the link from the description, because it's kind of misleading
Nice performance! And such a beautiful videoʕ ꈍᴥꈍʔ!
Here is software for Korg DDD1 (for windows-pc) ua-cam.com/video/MmUcT5IZUuA/v-deo.html
I love the constant tonal/modal variations contrasting with the repetitive rythmic motive and the saturated part disolves this musical miniature in a beautiful way.
Thanks !!!
Nice Songs! Do you still have the original recordings? What about a re-release? 😊 Greetings from Germany!🇩🇪🤝
I'll think about it and will keep you in the loop! Thanks for watching!
@@StephanesCreativeBasement My first synth was a K1 in 1988. I then was fascinated of the K4 but never bought one. In 2021 I got a pristine K4r from it‘s first owner after watching several K4-videos. Your video is one of the best about this instrument. I have programmed several nice and atmosphäric sounds with this special Kawai-flavour. Synthesizing is the hobby i love most as recreation from my work as teacher at school😵💫. Greetings from Germany! 😃🇩🇪🤝
I love it
Great to hear the Kawai K4(R) again! I made an entire album with the Kawai K4 (the keyboard version, not the rack version you used), and a Yamaha TX16W Sampler you may be interested in listening to: ua-cam.com/video/cZCqnOyTGUE/v-deo.html I have always found it to be a very easy synth to learn how to program sounds. I love the nasty resonance filters it can produce, (Blew up speakers with it 😆). I've made tons of tracks with this gem, maybe I'll release them somtime in the future. Are you still actively using your unit?
You always make some great stuff, hope to see some new videos soon mate. Do some tutorial vids for us!
Thanks Devon. I will for sure. Have a great day!
I LOVE this. Wonderful sounds, wonderful aesthetics. I love your artistic style. Subscribed!
Thank you for your kind words! And thanks for watching!!
Excellent! Love the 80's analog timbre your lo-fi mastering gives to this music. YOu even used an old camcorder effect for your video! "Lo-Fi territory big time!" 😅 . You have one new fan, I go and buy you Trinitron I LP now!
Thank you very much !! 🎶🎶

What Can i do if my s3000xl have This: waiting for hard disk ready?? Saludos de México!!!!
Some unit were sold with an internal HD. Maybe it's the case with yours, its searching for it (maybe it's dead? Maybe it has been removed?). Maybe you could try to do a hard reset ? (You'll have to check the manual) www.platinumaudiolab.com/free_stuff/manuals/Akai/akai_s3000_xl_manual.pdf --- hope this could help.
