My Grey Gap Year

Приєднався 3 бер 2023
Tips, Tricks and Hacks to maximise your travel. I make videos about the flights I take, the places I visit and the things I've learned along the way.
Hi, I'm Phil and I'm on a Grey Gap Year, because if it's good enough for middle class teenagers with their fancy ways, it's good enough for me :)
At the end of 2021 I suddenly and unexpectedly found myself out of work with a bit of a pay out and instead of investing it in a pension or something sensible I decided to invest it in memories, that will hopefully last a lifetime.
Solo travelling terrified me but I managed to overcome my fears and do it anyway and I hope that my videos will give you the confidence to get out there and travel. I'm a pretty ordinary guy, so if I can do it you can too.
I hope my videos and the information that they provide make travelling that bit easier and a little bit more fun,
So come and join me on My Grey Gap Year.

Stunning Views of Victoria Harbour Hong Kong | Landing and Take Off
I’ve landed and taken off a few times in Hong Kong and I’ve seen very little of interest on the landing but fortunately I persisted with my trusty GoPro and filmed this recent landing in Hong Kong. We circled Hong Kong Island, and I was blessed to make out Victoria Harbour in the distance.
As we come into land at Hong King International Airport you can just make out Disneyland in the distance if you know where to look. It was a stunning landing which I’m keen to share with my fellow enthusiasts.
The take off an hour or so later took out of the airport towards Macao and you can see the bridge in the early part of the climb. The other side of the plane would have had better views of Macao and China but dashing across the aircraft during the ascent is generally discouraged (with seatbelt signs to say the least).
If you skip to the last 30 seconds of the video, you’ll se some wonderful cloud formations, which I wish I’d kept the camera rolling a little while longer for.
Thank you for watching and joining me on my grey gap year.

Holiday Inn Golden Mile in Hong Kong (HOTEL REVIEW)

The Holiday Inn Golden Mile, on Nathan Road in the heart of bustling Tsim Sha Tsui. A short walk from the Ferry Pier and an MTR station the location is a definitely five out of five. My first impressions were also five out of five, could this be one of those Holiday Inn Hotels that live up to the brand expectations or will the Holiday Inn Golden Mile be another Holiday Inn Hotel Disappointment?...

Quick question….my membership year runs to April 25. I’ll be going for silver next year - if I get silver in say Feb 26 do I keep silver for the next membership year from April 26 to April 27? So basically do you keep your status the year after you gain it or do you lose it as soon as your year ends ?
It's squintillion years since I was in Hong Kong. The landings aren't quite as hair raising as they used to be. Loved the clouds at the end.
18:12 You mean , Little Britain 🇬🇧 🙄 🤣
I didn't see it until you said it, but I see where you're coming from, I love Little Britain 😂
5625 Jast Club
Sorry, you've lost me, but thank you for your comment
Did you get the chauffeur service to the airport from your hotel. I'm assuming yes.
I don't think they offer it for this little fifth freedom leg. I asked when I arrived in Hong Kong and it was a firm "No" (Name wasn't on the list)
@@mygreygapyear Ah ok. Thanks for the heads up. Would be a bit cheeky I guess ;)
Beside using a first class lounge, would you say the best thing about GOLD is having the special check-in area that connects to the lounge, as I've only ever used the Silver check-in, in the normal security area which is quite a slog when traveling regularly for work. PS/ I just got my GOLD membership this week :))))
Firstly congrats on getting your Gold Membership, look forward to bumping into you in the First Wing. I do like the First Wing, it has an air of exclusivity, but the increased chance of having an empty seat next to you when flying economy is definitely the best Gold perk for me. After that is using other OneWorld airlines First Class Lounges. Then the gold / silver perk of additional baggage when I visit my daughter.
Good Lord. Since the 80s, the parties I have been to in there. Brilliant place. Water from the mains is safe to drink, thank the Brits and the now Water Dept. Boiling is recommended due to water tanks for larger buildings. I used to live just up the road. An old university friend has the Rolex shop below. As for the window, crumpet viewing.
"Crumpet"? I haven't heard that for a while 😂 I think that is the only logical explaination. Thanks for your comment, very much appreciated.
Also are all the business class seats a bit cramped or was it just the ones with a window 🪟 🤔
That is a good question, I'm going to say that I think that they're all going to be a bit narrow, but they shouldn't be. I think they have a foot cubby that is too generous and that makes the seat in front a bit narrow.
Hi Phil - New Subscriber 👍🏼 Is there a limit on the time you can spend in the lounge before yr flight ✈️?
I flew business class from Hong Kong to Bangkok and there were other flights before mine, so the check in desk and the dedicated lounge were both open and they were happy to check me in and welcome me to the lounge, I was there at least three hours before. As far as a limit, I think check in desk and lounge opening times only, but I'm not 100%
@@mygreygapyear thanks 🤙🏼
One more question. How many buses can skip the immigration in Hong Kong departing from Macau 🇲🇴?
I've just had a look at the current schedule, they're currently on the half hour from 7.30am to 8.30pm. Go to www.macauhkairportbus.com/ and click "Get Tickets"
@@mygreygapyear thank you so so so much
In answer to your question, it’s because it’s sexy AF to watch a bear on his gap year showering 😛
I've missed my little pick me ups from you, glad to see you again, thanks.
What about the pram, 3 kids and the miserable wife mate
Well I've solved the wife issue 😂 but yes that does change the equation somewhat. I suppose if this is for your annual family holiday then it's less of an issue. I don't remember flying from Heathrow on family hols, it was always Gatwick, Manchester, or if I could manage it, Birmingham where parking costs tend to be more reasonable.
Luggage class with DHL?
Sorry Phillipe I'm not sure what you're getting at?
I think you enjoyed this list, especially the 100 decibel frother, I may be exaggerating. You would rock that poncho!
I loved imagining me in economy with a 100 decibel frother. I chuckled all day. Not sure about the sparkly "vintage" poncho though (you have to remember it's vintage 😊) or the Clint Eastwood version
Exactly what I remember from 12 months ago. Can't wait to go back in another 12 months time. 😊
Thanks Robert, I'm glad you enjoyed the video, I've landed and taken off a few times from Hong Kong now and that is the first time I've take that route, usually just over the water and then land.
Great views from both your way in and out of Hong Kong. I did increase the speed when the flight attendants were talking which made me chuckle 😂.
Flight attendants on turbo, I can imagine... 😊
Hi Phil I just wanted to say thank you for all your hard work but I've decided to stop subscribing as I feel the channel as gone off by a country mile from my original thoughts. All the best
Thank you too for your support Neil, I'm obviously sorry to see you go but I understand. If you were able to offer some additional insights on how you feel the channel has changed I'd really appreciate your feedback, and I hope that you'll check back in to the channel in time and perhaps there'll be a few videos that are more to your liking. Again, thank you for your support and I too wish you all the very best, Phil
@@mygreygapyear Phil, the initial concept seemed to be for the person trying to get status - a lot more how the normal guy can get it - suggestions/ideas etc. However, it seems now that it has moved onto and if you have huge amount of avios, time and enough money for exotic destinations, you too can do this. For me, what made you so original was that, I'm just your average bloke ... For me, the chances of being in the Far East are ZERO, most of my travel is only within Europe, how do I make it work there? What are the best seats you can get? How do you find bargains? Maybe I missed it and for that, I apologise but I will always be grateful for your early stuff - it was really inspiring.
First of all thank you because my girlfriend has problems to go to Hong Kong since she should apply the visa for Hong Kong this video extremely helpful for people like me. Thank you 3000❤
You're very welcome, I'm glad the video was helpful. I wasn't able to find any good information on how to get from Hong Kong to Macao before I flew and that was the main motivation on making the video, so if it helps one person then it is worth it.
@@mygreygapyear yes exactly. I am going in late October looking forward for a super Macau 🇲🇴 my Venetian is waiting for me
As a gold member - spot on review - Where there is a difference is flying from T3 and getting access to the Cathay Pacific first - a step above them all
Thanks for your comment, I am planning on the "rights of passage" lounge crawl video next year 😂
Wow what a great video! Thanks for recording this for us! Was the first plane an A330 or something? I couldn’t tell what plane it was except the wingtip kind of looks like an airbus…the second plane was an A350 I think…sorry for sounding so geeky lol
Thank you for your comment, the landing is in an A330-300 but the take off is a Cathay Pacific A321neo. I know right. I took some photos of the cabin and a friend said the cabin had a "private jet vibe".
Great views! Thanks for the info + video!
You're very welcome as always Jimmy
8423 Cortez Skyway
Changed alot (obviously) since I went there in 81, working at the new sewage plant next to Sha Tin race course (excellent view of it in the first part of the video). Those days it was an hair raising approach at Kai Tak airport.... what an experience!!
Thanks for your comment, I've seen some old video of that landing, fun to be a part of right? I mean, once you're safe on the ground 😊
@@mygreygapyear Yes, it's a good landing if you can walk away from it. lol
@@DaveHarper-r5k 😂
Wonderful 🙏🙌 One of my favourite places. I remember Kai Tak airport with fondness and white knuckles when landing during the typhoon season 😂
😂 I have seen old video of those landings but I don't think it was in high winds... New underpants for all passengers upon landing
@@mygreygapyear🤣 I was lucky enough to be in the jump seat of a Malaysian Airline flying in there (in good weather), in 95. Back in the day when you were allowed to do that.
@@Mark..P In the jump seat, what an experience.
Nice video Phil, my first ever flight was in 1976 flying into the old HK airport (Kai Tak) in between the buildings. It was on a VC10, no IFE and we went via Doha, Columbo then HK. I then flew on to Chiang Kai-Shek in Taiwan. Great memories.
I would love to see some footage of that, I don't suppose there was a window mount for an old cine eight, like you say, great memories. it's easy to forget how travel has changed over the last decade even. I remember taking battery operated DVD players for the kids because there was no in flight entertainment.
You can not film because of that scandal in Sri lanka, one guy filmed and reported, so now Qatar airways is bla bla.
Yes, I understand, it was Josh Cahill who made a big fuss on a flight from Sri Lanka to Doha. But the crew were perfectly lovely they just wanted to make sure I wasn't "being like Josh".
The toiletries in the shower are from Voya who are a company from Strandhill in Sligo! Really high quality products ❤
Thanks for letting me know, I really should have filled my boots shouldn't I?
Stayed there may times.. Is the bar still full of hookers at night? Not Monday apparently!
Make sure you use Cathay Lounge next time in LHR T3! Much better than the BA lounge
Thanks for the tip, looking forward to doing the "rights of passage" T3 lounge crawl one day soon
I recently flew from LHR to Jersey. I flew business on way out and economy coming the upgrade was £94 well worth it
Thanks for your comment, I agree that my heart wants the upgrade :)
A TWO hour flight, seriously, lucky I read the comments first. Piss off Phil.
😂😂😂 It's three hours and it includes a shower and caviar but I appreciate your frustration. Maybe watch a bit and judge me on that
You only need to Google Josh Cahill Qatar Airways to understand why the crew were standoffish on filming.
No, I get it mate, and I agree, they have a living to make and the last thing they need is someone sticking a camera in their face making unfair comments, like Josh Cahill did. This is why I stopped filming when I was told and then had a chat with the crew once we were up in the air. I did make a Qatar economy video shortly after Josh made his, if that's of interest to you, ua-cam.com/video/iB3MkVsptOk/v-deo.html Thanks Phil
I’m flying with Qatar from Heathrow to Doha and wondered if you knew what aircraft they usually used?
It's a mixed bag I'm afraid, they have Boeing 777, as well as Airbus A350 and an A380. If you're business class you probably want the A350 which should have Qsuite on it, but if you're in economy then you can sit upstairs on the A380 :) If you look at your flight number have a look on Google flights (the flight booking engine) and it should tell you what equipment each flight is scheduled to have on it. Have a great trip Phil
The hotel is in a super position & the room looked really comfortable. Noise is a huge issue for me in hotels, glad you moved. Shame about the weird check out & staff attitude.
I agree it was a good hotel until it came to checkout time, if the bar had been open it would never have come up.
Nice video, thank you
You're very welcome, glad you enjoyed it.
You’re absolutely right about independent hotels as well, which is a shame but this is why I do prefer brands like Premier Inn, you mostly know what you’re gonna get.
You definitely know what you're going to get with Premier Inn, a decent bed and a good nights sleep.
Oh dear, booked in two different Holiday Inn hotels in the near future, pray for us 😂 stayed at the Crowne Plaza in Liverpool a couple of weeks ago and really liked that. Great video as always 👍🏻
I'd check the TripAdvisor reviews for those Holiday Inns, totally hit and miss. Sometimes both a hit in one regard and a complete miss in another.
We find using google maps/hotels engine to be rather good and you can see the google reviews! Although agree the TripAdvisor reviews seem to be “better” and true to life!
Hello from Porto Phil. By miles, it's the most hilarious video you have made! My personal favourite is the milk-frothing noise. Hope you enjoyed KL :)
Thanks for your comment and support, glad you enjoyed it 😂
Doubles are from Trinidad yes. I don’t know why these small islanders are stealing our food, plus it’s the blackies too. Doubles is Indian food. Trini Indian don’t like blacks, especially our women, they run from blacks.

Explain?
I loved your take on this article. I’m not looking forward to your review of wearing the hair scrunchie! As for the neck pillow my wife lost hers that was attached to her bag on the bus to the Heathrow recently. So we bought 2 at the airport. Then she left mine at the hotel room! Think ive had enough of em!
Ha ha ha, I built up a collection of neck pillows that I bought at airports (can you actually buy them anywhere else?) then dragged them around wherever I went and discarded them 😂
Looks like it’s £790 now. No £475 to be seen
Thanks for your comment, if you're planning on doing a round trip then you can still get £475 in First and £325 back in business (starting in Bangkok), I explain it all in this blog article. mygreygapyear.com/emirates-price-update-hong-kong-and-bangkok/
Loved your effusiveness over the full first class experience !!
Thank you for your kind comment, it was a once in a lifetime experience.
The seat width is perfect, except if you are overweight like yourself!
A wooly hat?? It's normally baking on BA planes, most of which have no individual air nozzles 😂
I hear that, I am too with rarely a personal air vent to be seen on BA.
Really enjoyed this video, subscribed 👍🏻
Thank you for your kind comment, much appreciated.
I apologise, but as a 1st class traveller i take much more care of my appearance. Comfy & stylish. GOOD GOD!
Not sure how to respond to that so OK, so here's some goofy replies. 1. If find that comment a little stiff Ms Starch. (which reminds me of the joke that involves feeling a little stiff from Rugby" 2. Comfy and stylish but your comment lacks class (I don't like that one too much but without it I'm playing fast and loose with the word "list") 3. The Paul Daniels approach (you might need to Google who that is) with "That's a shame because I like your appearance... Not a lot but I like it. " However, since you commented twice I'll give you another comment below (or above)
I agree with janine, must have class to recognise class, and must be nice to get nice results, i think you're just being awkward, many reviews give an honest reflection of the lens through which the person is looking to begin with. Key word.... Bias. (You might want to google that word)
@@kamranrehman7174 (Googles Bias) inclination or prejudice for or against one person or group, especially in a way considered to be unfair. "there was evidence of bias against foreign applicants" So I'm confused, Ms Starch rather stiffly (still love that joke) accuses me of being badly dressed in business class (or first?) and you accuse me of having no class, and both no dress sense and no class are completely true, so no surprises for me there, but I do consider myself kind, as in I would never comment on what someone is wearing or their appearance or would ever be so unkind as to say someone had no class, but that's just me, you do you. But my confusion comes from your pivot into bias? Are you saying I'm biased "against" Qatar airways, because I have others accusing me of being on their payroll and being biased "in favour" or Qatar Airways. So I guess I'm doing something right.
