My Grey Gap Year

Tips, Tricks and Hacks to maximise your travel. I make videos about the flights I take, the places I visit and the things I've learned along the way.
Hi, I'm Phil and I'm on a Grey Gap Year, because if it's good enough for middle class teenagers with their fancy ways, it's good enough for me :)
At the end of 2021 I suddenly and unexpectedly found myself out of work with a bit of a pay out and instead of investing it in a pension or something sensible I decided to invest it in memories, that will hopefully last a lifetime.
Solo travelling terrified me but I managed to overcome my fears and do it anyway and I hope that my videos will give you the confidence to get out there and travel. I'm a pretty ordinary guy, so if I can do it you can too.
I hope my videos and the information that they provide make travelling that bit easier and a little bit more fun,
So come and join me on My Grey Gap Year.

I Tested British Airways Old Style Business Class Seat (Fly Back in Time)
In this video I’ll show you what the old British Airways Yin-Yang Club World business class experience is like? Does this revolutionary business seat still hold up today? And will I ever fly in this BA business class seat again?
Because, one day this seat will be gone and people will talk about the revolutionary lie flat business seat that British Airways released to the world in the year 2000 and it’s updated version in 2006, and now I can say I flew on that seat.

Today that old BA Business class seat has been improved on many times by other airlines and BA itself has a new business class suite called the club suite, but you can still experience this old business class seat and I wanted to do that while I had the chance.
This flight was with British Airways from London Heathrow to Hong Kong International Airport, flying in business class. I used Avios points to pay for a round-trip ticket in business, and I also used my Barclays British Airways Upgrade Voucher and this cost 100,000 Avios and £550

Binge watching your content. Loving it so far. Thanks matey.
That seat gives me the fear, doesn’t look comfortable at all! Far inferior to the seat on competitors too
First time viewer - loved this - thank you so much. You've got a new subscriber too.
I’ve chosen our seats so that we only have to walk over each other and nobody has to pass us. The window seats in that case are actually excellent - really private and better than a lot of other business class seats as you truly have your own private booth. Surprisingly I also enjoy facing backward in these seats! If you can get the few ‘ideal ‘ seats in this style, they are better than much of the competition. I haven’t flown Emirates from Manchester for several years, but the last time I did, their business cabin was appalling! 2 seats side by side, no privacy from your neighbour or anybody else in the cabin. Straight out of the 1970s!
You pronounce the 't' at the end of moet. Great video 👌
The location is excellent if you enjoy nightlife on the weekend. There is also a quick shop (mini mart), an ATM, a night club and several bars all within 2 minutes walk of the hotel.
question pls. what if you need to go to hk after few days in macau? no problem ?
If you're going into Hong Kong on your return from Macau then you would use the other bus service which terminates at the pier and you'd go through Hong Kong immigration into Hong Kong itself. I was flying out to Bangkok so I was able to use the but that was direct to Hong Kong International Airport.
Thnx for the fun video. A little hint to avoid that awful flickering in the video: Obviously your framerate of the camera matched with the frequency of the electric power in the airport. Just adjust the framerate a little, like 48fps or 52fps instead of 50, and the flickering will be gone. :)
Thanks for your comment and your tip. Is that a standard thing that electric lights run at that frequency or do lights run at different frequencies? The reason I ask is that the flickering isn't obvious when I'm recording and looking at the screen. I have also updated my camera from a GoPro to a Sony, so hopefully that will help :) Thanks Again, Phil
@mygreygapyear 50Hz is a quite common standard in the power grid. Unfortunately 50fps is a common standard, too. 😂 The monitor of the camera has a different framerate, that's the reason why you don't see the flickering when filming. And by the way, congrats for your new camera. 👍👌
I'll make the change, thank you, I appreciate your help.
@@mygreygapyear Oh I forgot a detail: Not only the very same frequency causes flickering, an integer fraction or an integer multiple of it does, too. So, maybe your cam is set to a framerate of 25fps, which is exact half of 50. If that's the case, just change it to 24 or 26fps.
Hmm i dont know about the food choices in The Lounge for vegetarians? Not much choice for them now is there? 😮😮😢😢😊😊
You know, I didn't really think about it, I will try to find out more information for vegans and vegetarians in the future. I call myself half a vegan because I eat vegetarian and vegan meals about half the time, it's an old habit I picked up from being married to a vegan.
I live in Northern Ireland and need 185 Tier points for Gold by 8th Dec. Just sent my wife and kid to Paris for a BA holiday to get them both into Gold states. But I can't afford to take that much time off and need a simple tier run to end on a high. Your suggestion of Dublin to Cairo sounds good, but I can't seem to get it up on the BA website. Or do I need to ring up to book it or us iberia website. If it is the later, how does one get the tier points, and also, how does one now it a code share.
Dublin - Cairo is with Iberia so I would start at Google flights and follow the Iberia website booking link, you'll earn tier points with Iberia and other Oneworld partners, the only issue is that this might not be an eligible flight, as although it's marketed by Iberia it's operated by Iberia Express, but I would just call the Gold or silver line and clarify the situation. You get the tier points credited to your Executive club account by adding your account details when you're booking. I understand you can add these retrospectively but I had a huge issue with Qantas a year or so back so if you can't add them when you're booking then again I'd call. Best of luck with your run, Phil
I prefer this to the Q suite. I like to have the openness and appreciate the space. Q suite feels boxed in and like a confessional box at church.
Thanks for your comment, I felt a bit boxed in in the Qsuite too, if the three seats I think I found the new suite on the 787-9 the best compromise.
If given a choice, I’d fly Cathay Pacific, and will also get tier points. Lovely video though. ❤
Thanks for your comment, much appreciated, I have flown Cathay a few times now, although not in the new Aria suite, and I did enjoy it.
Nice video again. I too have avoided these seats but have thought that maybe I should try them just once. You have just put me off 😂😂😂
If you want to experience it just because, then you really should, it is a blast from the past 😊
Great video I personally hate this seat. No storage awful arrangement no privacy. Ba flie this Mco-Lgw it’s a cheaper option but I always find I’ll pay more to connect than fly this seat
Thanks for your comment and support, the lack of storage is a major pain
Good content, thanks. BA have actually upped their food game. Recently flew First to Singapore and their lobster was amazing. Old hardware, but I never use the IFE anyway. Eat, sleep, get off. The 787 you were on is generally an awful experience whatever airline you go on. The call bell is there to be used! 😊. Over 50 flights for me this year, mostly in APAC, allows me to experience some top airlines and BA has certainly slipped, but I still can’t get over the excitement of getting on a BA flight home. T5 makes all the difference especially if on a domestic transfer.
Thanks for that comment, I loved it. I love lobster tail too, mega yum and I'm learning to press the bell when I need to 😊 Thanks again, Phil
Flew this seat on the way back from Dubai this year. Yes it’s old but did the job on a shorter long haul flight when I just wanted to sleep. Seems food is going more and more down hill with BA. Look at the recent Brunchgate cuts and night time food cuts. So if you just want to sleep BA is decent except for that excuse of a mattress topper, it’s really pathetic. If they fixed that I’d be happier. I’d only fly BA long haul now with Avios vouchers and use full Avios flights on other airlines. However club Europe catering is pretty good
Thanks for your comment and support, the mattress topper really needs a re-think, I'm surprised that the white company are prepared to put there name to it.
@@mygreygapyear well I can’t imagine Do&Co are very happy putting their name to Ba Club World catering, but I suppose both of these companies want the contract even if BA have given them a tight budget to work with
I honestly cannot understand how not only a designer came up with that configuration, but also, that an airline actually agreed to install it on a plane. It is awful.
Thanks for your comment, installing in 2006 I can understand, installing in 2016 is harder to understand, I agree, it's awful.
Shit service please don’t buy tickets they are shit airline shit disgusting staff specially in Gatwick airport staff rude and shit
Try Finnair longhaul, please. Their innovative lounge seat is surprisingly comfy, and to me which I find important: You have 100% privacy. Food is subpar but you won’t see anyone onboard! Prices to Asia are very competitive
Thanks for your comment, Finnair is definitely on the list 😊
Cant get over how bad those toilets were. Toilets on the plane look better. Pretty sad for a business class lounge.
The toilets in the lounge do look like hospital toilets, ready to be hosed down and disinfected after a big accident 😊
£475 for one way flight. Return flights in that price would be nice.😂😂
Thanks for the comment, you can fly round trip on that route for about £750 in business and first, but £475 would be nice though 😊
Brilliant video. Thanks for sharing your journey with us to watch and sort of experience it. Might have to use that trick :) I'm now a subscriber too.
Thank you for your comment and support, it really is appreciated, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Its interesting as once you have been in the new club suite seat this one didn't see so bad - makes you realise the final refurb can't come soon enough. Now wish they could make the PE seat more comfy too!
Thanks for your comment, I did like the club suite but I haven't tried PE yet.
Thanks for the video - I was Oct year end and I made sure I was Silver before the change. My membership says I have Silver until 30 April 2026. But what will be the period I now need to start earning TP's to keep my status after 31 March 2026? My account shows my TP collection period ends 31 March 2025 - but this seems misleading for retaining silver after April 2026? It looks to me that there is no point booking any further BA flights between now and 31 March 2025 as I am already silver and will be until 30 April 2026 - am I correct? I have a flight booked in December 24 that now seems no point in having.
Thanks for your question Debbie, I've heard a few people talking about odd sounding end dates and I'm not sure if BA is being generous, BA IT on the fritz or something else, but if you have doubts then I think you have to go to the source and call the Silver helpline. I can say this, if you earned Silver status (600 Tier Points) between 1st April 2024 and now then you will be silver for this and the next membership year, which ends on the 31st March 2026 and then the grace period until the end of April 30th 2026. And your tier point collection year will be from the 1st April to 31st March from now on. Let me know if you have a follow up question, Phil
nice
Thanks 😊
An honest review that matches my experience. I’ve had the pleasure of these seats to Singapore, back from Hong Kong, and then this year to and from Shanghai. First time around, 6 years ago, they felt OK, but this year they felt tired and worn. The screens didn’t work properly, and while the food from LHR was generally OK, the food on the return was terrible! … and the lemon meringue bar is better avoided.
Thank you for your comment and support and a special thank you for letting me know about the lemon meringue bar. Sometimes I wonder if the people who make these decisions ever fly on these aircraft and sample the food they're subjecting us to?
I was delighted to hear you describe your experience as overwhelming. So many little Alan Partridges on UA-cam behave so smugly and entitled. This is very refreshing
Hey thank you so much, I think when this stops being amazing is when I'm going to stop doing this 😊
Almost unsubscribed over the cream first then jam, but I enjoy your videos too much…
Thank you for your comment and support, I'm glad I didn't lose you over a scone, I must make a video on how I actually eat scones in normal times (cold butter sliced off a block followed by good strawberry conserve - no cream).
The Lemon bar is exactly what you feared it would be, a soggy citric mess of sweetness!
Thank you for letting me know, and I love your description 😊 I am glad I just stuck with some cheese,
Those Qatar r afraid of negative videos even though many y known UA-cam still filming and did jot hear that they were told no film plus its your right to use your camera in aircraft in your seat and food ots not there business... As long as u r not filming ppl
Thank you for your comment, I really don't know why they're so afraid of negativity, I'm sitting in the best seat in the world and the crew should back themselves that they can do the best job in the world. Generally, when people check me out they can see that I never film staff, or passengers, or gate agents or check in staff, I'm very careful. Thanks Phil
For me, and just my opinion, the best Gold perk is getting the front row seats on short haul, with, not one, but two windows. #Mr1A.
I think that is a perk that gets missed all the time when I list them, and it is a great perk that you wouldn't miss unless you'd had it, Thanks for your comment, Phil
Auditing and Reviewing of Hotels is very misleading due to the failure of publishers to rate above standards What are your Qualifications ?. You have not paid any attention to the current health and safety regulations Such as Portable Appliance Testing a requirement of any premise admitting the general public or guests, Then you should move on to the Life Safety Installations - Emergency Lighting / Fire Alarm & Emergency Escape and muster Points. I suggest you quit the Day Job and stop feeding off gullible advertisers. Go on a health and safety course so your conscience is clear. Blackpool Hoteliers are renowned for cutting corners after the changes in the regulatory Reform Fire Safety Act 2005. If I was doing a review I would ask to inspect the Premises Health and Safety Manual before booking in. CONCLUSION (FAIL).
Thanks for your comment, an illuminating take on a hotel review, I think it would be a bit dry for a UA-cam video, most viewers (including me) would skip to the "Did it pass?" chapter. Thank you for sharing your views, Phil
BA crew are very hit and miss imo. Have done 12 flights with BA this year, out of Heathrow and city
Thanks for your comment, I've been fortunate to have good crews, one very early departure seemed to have a sleepy crew out of Gatwick
That’s without a doubt the most confused, impractical, cramped seat layout I’ve seen on a plane. A real mess. I’d ask for a seat in economy if faced with that
Thanks for your comment, I'm not sure I'd swap for economy but I know what you mean 😊
How did you find such cheap flights
I flew similar distance on this old style business from Shanghai back in July. Not again. Flying from Doha in January with BA and opted for premium over business as it would've been same old club world product.
Thanks for your comment and support, I think PE will offer better value over this old club world seat.
What I've found is the leg rest isn't always level with the seat so on my last flight I had to use the blanket under my legs too avoid the seat edge pressing into my calves. Headphones have terrible audio quality, I used my laptop and Sony XM4 instead.
I use my own headphones on BA flights, even in First Class my Bose headphones are a step up from the provided headphones
Totally agree. Compared to Club Suites, the old Business Class is a joke. When club suite not available, I just take Premium Economy,
I think PE is definitely going to offer to better bang for your buck over this seat, I guess it does depend on the cost, I imagine if PE and this seat were the same price I would pick the Club World seat
actually enjoyed my old style seat on a flight to Dubai with my wife and infant. Granted it was upstairs on an A380. with plenty of side cupboard space, but it was pretty handy being able to pass the kid between the seats, a lot easier than the Club Suites, but I'd say the superior comparisons ends there.
Now side storage in an A380 upper deck would make a difference, that is an excellent point. I know with my grandson right now he would love being passed through the little hatch 😊
These seats will be around for a few years more unfortunately. The key thing is being away from other people- these seats constantly remind you there is someone on the other side of the frosted plastic- you can feel every movement the other pax make.....look at those wines...oh dear....
Thanks for your comment Rick, I was fortunate to be on a quiet cabin and I didn't have a seat mate so I didn't experience that...
Realy useful TY: blond moment is the flight from Oslo to Malaga on one booking? Can't get to work through ITA Matrix without burning ££££
Thanks for your comment and support, it sounds like I've made a snafu if I've said Oslo, it would be Stockholm and not Oslo. All of these should be bookable via the carrier starting with Google flights, no need for Matrix.
That’s my not your error! So I book through Finnair TIA
@@HannahMannah lol, I often put Oslo in my bullet points by mistake so I just assumed it was me 😂😂😂. And yeah you can just book through Finnair.
No explanation about £475 ??
Yeah, it's there mate, 19:11 and in the chapters titled "how I booked this". It's also in a pinned comment and in a blog article at mygreygapyear.com/emirates-price-update-hong-kong-and-bangkok/ and my reply sounds a bit snarky but it's not meant to be. Let me know if I can be any further help, Phil
Your review is obviously quite valid, but I still love this seat as I usually travel with my wife. It's almost like we're sitting across from each other, I don't even have to turn my head to talk to her.
I think these seats work well for couples, unless you want a break, putting up the screen on your spouse might not be the start to you're holidays that you're looking for 😂
I flew this seat layout from Gatwick to Punta Cana in May. I don't think the leisure planes are expected to replace these seats anytime soon. I must confess that I didn't have a problem with these seats at all. Of course they are not going to be as good as the new Club Suite, but I still found them to be comfortable. Granted, I was travelling with my partner, so there was not awkward catching of the eye. The only complaint I had was that the power socket on my seat wasn't working on the way back. Turns out I could've emailed a complaint for some Avios compensation, but it's a bit past that now! It was a redemption booking, so maybe that's why I am not too fussed. I think if I had paid the £6,000 they normally retail for though, I'd be a bit miffed! They should not be charging similar prices to Club Suite, for a Club World seat.
Thanks for your comment, and I agree, there should be a cost break on these seats over the club suite. On the Heathrow - Hong Kong route they have (had) both seats for the same money. I'm really bad at complaining for Avios too, people keep telling me I should have complained about various things.... Thanks Phil
Not viewed yet but did you book and pay for 2 seats...?
No, that was your mum
Recently went on a "new" A350 suite between London and Tokyo. Not much of an improvement. There isn't the fold down foot rest and there's a sliding door for the privacy and a bit more storage for you phone and headphones. Food was alright, but there's still the same pasta dish they've offered over the past few years. IFE was very poor IMO. No external cameras for the geeks and the selection of films was poor. I managed to eventually find something, but it took ages scrolling through. I just couldn't believe that the Britsh flag carrier didn't even have a Bond film. I won't bother paying for a BA long haul flight again. I'll keep collecting the Avios, but that return flight cost me the best part of £5k. ANA is about the same in a much older 777 and was fantastic.
Thanks for sharing your experience, much appreciated. Most people find the club suite to be a much better product and generally enjoy it, although it is very similar to lots of other products out there. I find the food on BA to be hit and miss depending on what you choose, although my Kung Po chicken wasn't great I have had some spectacular meals with BA, so I just wish they could be consistently good. Thanks again for your comment, I'll have to try the ANA product Phil
Any plans for a trip to Australia mate
Hoping to make it out for Christmas next year so I can watch the Ashes.
Those configurations were terrible. Not a fan of the frosted screens. I don’t know how they designed those seats in the first place. They’ll be gone soon 😊
We can only hope that they will be gone, but from Gatwick it doesn't sound like soon 🙂
@ Oh that’s true. Their 777-200s already got refurbished. These old seats may still be around for years
I actually think the bed is more comfortable than the new club suites!!
And lots of people agree with you, that is a running theme with this seat, and I found it good too, except for the collapsing footrest. Of course I'm a shorty so I'm generally ok in all lie flat seats 🙂
Oh I loved this seat especially the upstairs seats with loads of seat service
Apparently the upstairs on an old 747 was amazing in this seat, I've been told that they were in 2-2, so a quiet cabin and, as you say, great service. Is this the upstairs you mean?
