Nice one Rich you made that look easy and I know its far from it.
Looks like your fitness is coming back. Just make sure you don't over do things and put yourself back to square one. Because that is not only unpleasant, it's damn annoying. And yes, I've been there, done that lol.
Thanks, I'm planning to have another week off from any shooting or training, let any accumulated fatigue or muscle tears time to fully heal
Nice bow!
Thanks peach
Nice to see your shoulder is improving ! It's a damn nuisance when parts of your body decide to play up, isn't it ?
Thanks zed, attempting that 134lb compound bow last week, took it out of me, shoulders have about recovered, but bow arm elbow is still a bit weak, so being conservative on the weights for another week
Very informative for anyone who is need to know longbow and at that archery in general. Love that you can share this information by knowing how helpful this is because you’ve done it. Great video rich!
Thanks dropped, most of knowledge regarding archery is out there it just knowing we're to looks for it, one book i don't have the stratiacon a 6th century roman byzantine training manual has passage that Roger ashem references about roman archery shooting with a hard fast loose, hinting he himself may of read the same book
Damn rich, you okay? Crossbow bear always pushing the limits.
Yeah, I'm fine. This failure wasn't too violent, and bar the string, the rest of the bow is repairable
Update on the bow the handle section failed. For the price and wait time, i don't recommend this bow, anyone looking for high poundage fibreglass bow you're better off getting the alibow h1 heavy draw or AF 100lb bow
That’s a really Nice looking bow mate. Where did you get it from?
Thanks, I got it second-hand but It was made by fairbow they do a few models of bows. Last time i checked, fairbow regularly stocks 100lb+ yew longbows, but if you contact them, they will do custom draw weights, I believe joe gibbs got a 190lb wood glass laminate american flatbow made by them
I recommend porridge for breakfast for that sort of thing, nice bit of kit.
Thanks mr eckes
Much respect to you for even attempting to draw it back and I cant imagine how you even strung that bow haha 🏹
Thanks, it shouldn't take too long to reach a full draw, i had to use a stringer to brace this one. On the short recurves, I use the step through method, i know some people use the push pull method on longbows but not personally seen anyone push pull string anything over 120lb
@Richardsmith001 That's very interesting bro looking forward to seeing you shoot it at full draw
Nice one Rich that looks lovely mate
Thanks stu
Now that is really cool ! It'll be really interesting to see how it performs !
Thanks zed, I want to do a test based on some of Roger Aseham toxophilus book, he writes about shooting overhand and underhand, referring to the target appearing above or below the bow hand, he mentioned stronger archers(reffering to archers using a high poundage bows) will shoot overhand and weaker archer will need to shoot underhand, some of the historical shooting ranges with butts either end were only about 100 yards so I want to test what draw weight will it take to shoot underhand out to 100 yards with medival arrows from 880grain, 1000grain 1250grain and 1750grain arrows
I've been out for a bit. Good to see you ol'boy
Alright karl , I hope you had a good Christmas and new year
Shooting 100lbs like its nothing 😂
Unpleasant surprise. Looks like it might have been a material failure first, for a pure glue failure I would have expected the whole overlay to come off in one piece. Have you considered trying to build a Micarta G10 style overlay directly on the end? I haven't researched it much but fibre (glass or other) and epoxy should have some fairy reliable bond to a glass stave, I would hope anyway.
I could try micarta or other tip overlays
@Richardsmith001 Just throwing out ideas, I'm aware plastics can be tricky to bond well
@mrln247 looking into to it micarta is the way to go , the cost of adhesive designed for gluing stuff like nylon and other machinable plastics, its more economical to use micarta and a decent epoxy resin
Glad its repairable and no harm or damage. It happens so fast its more perplexing than scary.
Damn least it’s not an expensive bow.
Yeah is a prototype one I made the bow it's didn't seem to mind the light arrows its just the tip that failed. Also, it's repairable on closer inspection. I saw the glue failed on the tip side, I'm currently looking into adhesives that are better suited for bonding plastics to polyester and epoxy fiberglass
That was a pity. Still, as you said, you can repair it. Glue failure... Does make me wonder though. How often did this happen in medieval times, as they didn't have particularly strong glue back then. And I believe horn nocks were used on some bows of that period ?
Back then, Yew bows especially needed horn nocks as it's relatively soft especially the sap wood only difference is how horn nocks on longbow mount, they are a concaved cone shape so the string pushes them onto the tips so the glue isn't holding all the weight it's more the mechanics of the joint, were my tip design is more of an overlay and the glue line is taking a lot of strain, I've looked into some other machinable plastics and glue more suited for bonding plastics to fiberglass
@@Richardsmith001 Ah, right. I thought I'd seen them on reproduction bows, and had read about them being used. So they didn't trust the glue that much then. Makes sense.
@zednotzee7 taking of reproduction bows I've should be getting a mary rose replica yew longbow built to one of the bigger ones recovered from the ship should have it in a few weeks
@@Richardsmith001 Nice !
Wow i am quite old and struggle with 80 😂 This combined with some weights and lots of steak, 160 could be wothin reach. I bet the number of archers world wide pulling that sort of weight is very low indeed.
My goal for now is to be able to shoot 150lb both traditional and compound bow, If I can get to a point without injury I might go even higher, when I was younger i wanted to hold the strength record for longbow recurve and compound
I had one of these as a kid .You could buy a ready made one or the Safari kit .Yours is the kit version and hasn't been painted .Nice old bow.
Enough to make Mr Gibbs sweat.
Yeah at this weight even the strongest archers would struggle, you read mark stretton blog by any chance? He had a similar device to this he used for training up to the world record attempt
@Richardsmith001 I'm sure I've read bit and pieces of it through the years. Haven't yet decided how much I want to push the draw weight, already have easily aggravated old injuries, but being able to pull a bit over 100lb with confidence is cool I can pull it just not smooth, main aim is Manchu style bow somewhere around the 100 or over mark.
That was close! Beast
Thanks those last few inches felt like bending a bar of steel, in a few months I'll try again but I'll back it down to an even 150lb
Low reps high weight is should be effective strength training.
I find the high weight and low 5 rep range, After 2/3 months, the build-up of fatigue you start to regress, but if I keep at 80% or lower of my 1 rep max i can training 3 times a week and not need any deload weeks
Beast mate 💪
Thanks stu
I under drawed a good few inches, so I only pulled 140lb at best, I will do another update on my training and where I'm at regarding my strength levels at the end of february
Is that impeller working?
Impeller?
That green thing behind the bow puller @@Richardsmith001
@addersbowman oh that's a mower cutting deck, i need to add the wheels and engine from a another mower that body is falling apart
@Richardsmith001 my bad I after an impeller for work. Love to see some penetration tests on that bow sometime. Bet it kicks ass.
Man they stack fast
This compound bow draw force curve is particularly nasty, on module no.5 not only hits peak weight around 14 inch draw, but keeps very close to peak weight till the last inch were the let off kicks in
That is a bakelit cam. The same material that the old records were made.
It is definitely a very unique design 👍🏼 🙏🏼
Yeah some of the early compound bow designs look completely alien to today's compound bows, I've seen 6 wheel versions like this by bear and other companies
Yeah, the early compounds were very interesting. My friend invented and produced an all aluminum bow in the early 70’s. Not sure of the spelling but Walter Ardwini sold the bow at his indoor archery range located in Jersey City N.J. RIP Walter.
Are the vintage style compounds expensive? The 110 upfront is big, but suppose it's like doing pull ups as your always the same weight it's not like your body get lighter and heavier through the movement. Need some no let off Manchu cams on one.
Depends a lot of old compounds aren't worth anything, i got an old 95lb hoyt lefty compound for £70 , i got 2 martin lynx bows in parts for about £40 and rebuild one with the original cams, but with ben Pearson split limbs, which is the 110lb in this video cost me about £60 total to make I will say it much easier to stumble across the old steel cable compounds in the high draw weights as back then you need to be pulling 100lb+ to get a 500 grain arrow moving 250fps jennings martin and golden eagle. some of there off the shelf bows could be cranked down to 120lb, You can get cams with no let off think mathews did a bow fishing compound bow like that
Won't be till the new year, but I think I could make a compound with no let off. And a flat draw force curve my estimate would be about 120lb with a 30 inch draw length
@@Richardsmith001 They are interesting contraptions, I can see the lack of efficiency being a reason people wouldn't want the old ones. However with those heavy weights they could be interesting training tools having such different draw force curves. No point real point putting no let off cams on for energy if they aren't that efficient, but again for training pulling and holding all the weight is a challenge. Don't feel obliged to do it just because I suggested it.
Nice
Thanks, I'm surprised I can still draw the 110lb as I've not been shooting compounds for the last 2 months. Seems the bow trainer (the one with weights, not the springs) transfers nicely to the draw force curve of compound bows
@@Richardsmith001 Admittedly I have never drawn a real compound. Pound for Pound they are harder to draw correct, B/c the max draw weight is at a lower draw length? But once you get them over that "hump" the let-off lets you hold the draw easier correct?
@thefatefulforce8887 wouldn't say they are harder than traditional bows just different. Even compound to compound their draw force curves can vary a lot, my blue compound it's draw force curve is very similar to a recurve until the last inch of draw, then the let off kicks in, were this 110lb it peaks around 16inch to 19inch then lets off to 55lb, some extreme performance compounds will in the first few inches will hit peak weight and maintain it till the last 1/2 of draw, but like you said once you're over the hump and the bow let's off they are much easier
❤❤❤
I did something similar to my 110lb version looks great i just used friction tap and elastic tape.
Thanks, I used a rubber/cork fishing handle and reused the original wrap over the grip, it's much nice to shoot now
Nicely done mate, it's good to see your on the mend.
Thanks tactical
I'm getting back into shooting compounds. I only just got over covid, but it shouldn't take me too long till this bow feels like shooting a toy bow
If you can pull a 100lbs bow like that, you can most likely pull a 145lbs bow as well. As you have clearly a warbow right there, try the warbow stance. Though you'll need at least 30" of draw length for that to work well (longer arms will require longer pull).
Cool
Update I've re tested the weight of the bow and its 101lb @30, so the performance isn't terrible
Nice thanks Richard
@thefatefulforce8887 i forgot to mention the first few arrows were between 1840 and 1880 grains. Also, the sky was a bit cloudy which the chronograph doesn't seem to like off camera a few hours later I shot these arrows again and was constantly getting 130/131fps when the sky was brighter
@@Richardsmith001 Yea I have the same probs with my chrono. Thanks for the info mate.
