Ahhh you're putting me off a 2013 RS5 I'm close to buying... Car has brand new tires, brakes are in great condition, control arms all recently replaced, new AC compressor among a lot of other major work that I wouldn't need to worry about. Even the paint and wheels are pristine. But that transmission sensor and timing chain issues would just be hanging over my head, not sure I could live with the paranoia

Thats just common for the model 2010-2013 the rs4 / rs5 4.2 fsi models from 2014-2015 doesnt have the problem with the sensor its allready an updated one. You can tell that if you have „RS“ instrad of „RS5“ written in the speedometer

Hi there. I’m planing to buy an Audi now in January or February of 2015. I have an option of an 2013 rs5 with 45k or an 2013 rs4 with 37k. Both at similar prices. I have a 3 years old kid and a newborn on the way and this is the reason of considering the rs4, same engine different size though. I do prefer the looks of the rs5 and I have a Tesla model 3 performance as a daily driver, that I think it will be the car for everyday use with the kids. Any option on this? What do you thing of the back seats of the rs5? After all you came from an Durango 😊 Any experience on the rs4? Thanks in advance.

I’ve owned 2 Durango’s now, an R/T and now an SRT. The R/T was just waayyy too slow. The SRT 392 is good for power, but like anything else, you get used to it and want more. I see a HC Durango in my future. Anyways, any Durango is better than a lifeless minivan!

Have a 2013 b8.5 s5, my sensor also went... took a couple of weeks to get sorted, but happy it's done... car is driving smooth now!!

I’m looking at a 2014 Audi rs5 with 40k miles but I am afraid of the high cost for the timing chain and now the sensor in the transmission. I enjoy your videos they are really informative. They give me food for thought, should I buy a new bmw m2 or used well maintained rs5 at a substantial savings but with inherent high maintenance cost.

Can two grown adults fit in the back? Im thinking of buying an RS5 instead of a TT RS.. From my eyes it looks as if its ok space back there, definetely better than a TT RS

It’s been a year since the same sensor in my 2013 was replaced, 40+ hour job but the dealership gave me a cost break. I agree that it’s an inevitable failure point at some point with these cars but it’s a great transmission otherwise.

Great vid - saved myself a bit of cash doing it myself. Is there a trade off between filtration and air flow with the K&n, ie more air but not as much filtration. I’m thinking stick with stock on basis filtration more important than maximising air flow?

4:21 just to chime in as a tech at the dealership, TSBs are not required to be performed like recalls. If the car is under warranty, the work cannot be performed unless all the conditions are met as per the TSB. For example the Audi TSB for this problem states that a P179E code must be logged first, along with with several other codes. If P179E isn't logged or isn't the first to be logged, the TSB does not apply. The dealership definitely would have replaced this sensor before listing it for sale if all conditions were met when the code scan was run for the used car check. Also it is not worthwhile to perform every single TSB released for a car. TSBs refer to any somewhat reported problem that doesn't pose a safety risk. Imagine every single S4, S5, and RS5 that is sold CPO having to have the transmission removed and torn down, the MMI updated, replacing the AC control module, PCV vacuum updated, etc. (and yes, those are just a small list of all TSBs open for a 2013 RS5). All that work just for the possibility that something could break in the cars lifetime. There are few stories I see and have heard regarding the drive mode sensor, the AC module display flickering, and door lock actuators failing.

In your opinion which is better 2021 durango tow n go, or 2020 rebel fully load with ram boxes

We just bought a loaded '22 R/T for my wife. We didn't even get it home. The dealer had installed all-new rotors and pads. Ok, great! But they definitely didn't torque or thread lock the caliper bolts on at least one, but probably all four wheels as the LR caliper from all visual evidence has one bolt and began to swing and grind into the outer lip of the rotor. Very fixable. No one hurt. I'm not worried so long as they honor their tech's errors. But yes.... as one who only lets others work on my cars if I am half dead.... never trust the dealer. A lesson learned over and over. I just feel bad for my wife who was very excited to pick the truck up. She does not have any mechanical background so thinks it is broken voodoo and is anxious. Tomorrow morning is the first time I get to talk to the Service guys about getting it towed / fixed. Rotor / Pads / Caliper / Caliper Bolts / Caliper Bracket / possibly even the knuckled if the solo bolt wobbled in the hole.... they're going to ream some tech for this one. That's an easy $1500 on top of the $3000 they already put into it. Ouch.

I come from a more performance based mod background but appreciate the 'run what you brung' mentality and making it your own. What is the more populated forum for these SUVs? I'm on DDnet but it is a ghost town in there. Is there a better source for info and mods?

I know this repair will be expensive, but while you’re at the gearbox, the flex plates on these things are located very close and can crack/ break and cause catastrophic damage if it decides to while driving. The flex plate itself isn’t overly expensive, and while the gearbox is removed it may be worthwhile considering checking it to avoid a potential disaster. Rs5 owner for 5 years from Northern Ireland here.

Sucks so much but some of the 2013 models had the gen 1 DSG which still had DSG issues. What's the build date on your car? Also, it's reasons like these why I'd be hesitant to buy one without extended warranty even if it's from a 3rd party.

And...my interest in owning one of these cars is gone

2013 Audi RS5 owner here from Toronto. Last year if I accelerated quickly going over 3200RPMs or so, I would get a message saying, “Transmission overheating, please drive conservatively.” It was on extended warranty from Lubrico. Lubrico sent me to three different shops near me and they said they can’t work on the car. It’s a very specific engine. One recommended I get a whole new mechatronic and transmission unit that would cost $15k. But he was just trying to upsell me to his buddy who rebuilds transmissions. Eventually Lubrico told me I can go to Audi, or find a licensed mechanic myself they can approve. I took it to a mechanic who only works on Audi/VW. He replaced the clutches because they were burned out and overheating. Costed about $2700. Warranty covered most of it. He said IF the problem continues, then we’d look into replacing the transmission CPU. But that would be about $3-$5k depending on how much he can get through parts for. Glad to say that has never been an issue since. Hoping it won’t be moving forward. Advice: find a reliable mechanic who actually knows how to work on B8.5 RS5. They’re so rare and it’s difficult to find competent mechanics and parts for them. The 2013-14 models like ours are the ones unfortunately with transmission issues. But I always loved this car and I got mine with no accidents in the trim I wanted. Couldn’t say no.

This is where I think car manufacturers especially higher end ones where you are paying a premium already should really cover certain things like this even out of warranty or at least for more of an extended period. The car is 11 years old, not 20+ years old. To me this is a design failure and anything that is attributed to that should either be fixed or at least subsidised with a heavy discount. $7K+ is ludicrous for something that is a known issue to Audi.

Had similar problem with my rs5 mine was the driver position sensor in the transmission which would shift my car into neutral when I'd slow down ( verry dangerous when trying to turn through a Boulevard) it costed me 8k cause they gotta remove everything and change the seals, oils, gaskets etc
