Neverwinter Nights 2 - Hermit's Chalice - Module Review

The Hermit's Chalice is a pretty straight forward 4 to 5 hour module done on the the Neverwinter Nights 2 engine. Darkness Over Daggerford - Neverwinter Nights EE - Mod Review
My favourite premium module - I think it had the most consistent theme and pacing of them all. However, you made a good point about the shipwreck being placed in a bit of an awkward point in story after the brief introduction. Thanks for a great review!
Nice that someone sees the soul and the fun this game has to offer. I think its underrated.
Thank you for the review! This game is an absolute gem. I can't wait for them to do a sequel. I found it far more palatable than baldur's gate 3. The mechanics were fun the story was fairly decent. The character design I found really fun and had lots of options to maximize or to create interesting story. The only thing I really wish is they had more voice options. But other than that I think this game for a brand new startup company was phenomenal. I had only ever played 3.5 dungeons & dragons and Solasta actually helped validate much of the 5th edition rule set for me.
@@Owl_of_Omens Solasta is solid gold to me as well. It did a lot right. I really wish they continue with this brand and crank out that solasta 2 in the next couple.
Purge the unclean.
What happened to this module? It seems to have disappeared off the Vault.
neverwintervault.org/project/nwnee/module/gameworld/obsidian-legend
I've probably started this game 20 times. I always enjoy it, but never get far
This kind of game demands us to enjoy reading, which isn't a practice our society tends to foster. I only managed to actually enjoy Pillars (with almost no voice acting and lots of text) after I understood someone's trying to tell me something, albeit from a medium I wasn't used to. I've played dozens of RPGs throughout my life, always skipping dialogue. Speaking from a personal standpoint, taking your time - not only to read, but also to immerse yourself into the story - changes everything, seriously. *Of course I know it takes a lot of effort, so I'm by no means patronizing you.* This is my second favorite game, only staying behind of Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous (and yes, I've played Baldur's Gate 3). If I ever get a tattoo, it will be a specific symbol from this game's lore. That's how good it is for me. But it wasn't when I didn't read anything.
Blood Sweat and Pixels brought me here
PoE 1 & 2 are two of my favorite games of all time. I love the dark story of PoE 1 a lot, giving multitudes of options and choices that really matter. I do have to say, that I really like the optional turn based combat system of Deadfire way better, than real time with pause, especially as it fixes issues with pathfinding that cost me a lot of fights in PoE 1. Useful hint: Auto-pause can be setup for every X amount of seconds in fight, for old people like me who would forget otherwise xD
great video mate, well done.
Hello, nice review What mods are you using?
@@kote6915 So I only use a facelift mod and portraits. The facelift just changes the loading screen.
I was a great fan of Rogue_Darkweaver or Shadowcaster & Wizard_GreenMage, but a game NOT able to fix voice overs and too lazy to add the new stuff to the original campaign (CotM) sux! Overpriced, which is sad, as Solasta 2 could be a masterpiece that can easily compete with #BG3 and #BG4.
I completely forgot about this game. Hope the game gets some more classic modules
I wish Rob could at least release the rest of the story and lore in text form. I never finished Kingmaker and while ShadowGuard also ends on a sort of cliffhanger, it was Witch's Wake that really left me wanting more
@@blueshit199 it's definitely a little different and I really enjoyed what was there.
Great video! I played space marine 2 for an hour today and realized i want more lol
love this game! I'm really looking forward to the sequel.
Thank you :) Good video
It may offer the best toolset for making mods in the world of Shadowrun, but it is such a pain in the backside to use.
Lol. I heard that. Solasta is pretty cool for making set pieces. I haven't tried out Shadowrun mod making. I know Neverwinter nights was fairly complicated. At least for me. At layman's level.
YES
Is it worth playing without add a ton of mods?
Oh sure. Solasta lore is kinda neat and playing through is really a fun time. The mods just are there for extra.
Add ``A Song at the Crossroads MOD´, as it is TWO campaigns in one (No need for Monkeys campaign), and by far among the best scripting and char progression from level 1 to 16 or 19 (depending on DLC's).
Real time with pause and "goodness" do not belong in the same sentence. Games that are good with RTwP combat are good in spite of it, not because of it.
Thanks! Glad to know you don't like real-time with pause. :) I do.
Hello! Is it available for the console versions???
This will be my first shadow run game and I’m excited to try.
I liked Hong Kong. After your done with it, I suggest checking out Shadowrun Dragonfall. I really think the 2nd title nailed everything I wanted from a Shadowrun story. Just, it really doesn't have as robust a selection on mods.
The camera angle issues are terrible and there’s really no excuse. Can you imagine the developers testing this for hours and just completely ignoring the constant fight with the camera? The biggest problem just staring them in the face the whole time. Ridiculous.
How long does does it take to complete the DoD campaign?
Hey it's about twenty hours or a little more if you do side quests, otherwise I'd say probably about 8-10
PoE has imo one of the best (if not THE best) Stories in a Video Game.
Wish it was a much longer module. It was a lot of fun.
My problem with this game is that it's too wordy. I tried to finish this game 3/4 times but the furthest I've gone is the beginning of act 3. I found their next game Tyranny, much better in this regard, straight to the point and simple in it's vocab. Although i really wanna play pillars 2, part of me feel like I'll be missing out on some detail for not finishing the first game first.
Just checked my game, last save was in 2018, in start of act 3 (did white march and killed a dragon and whole Stronghold dungeon) if I vaguely remember. I swear I will finish it one day a buy second one. And also baldurs gate 1 lol.
I like these videos without heavy spoilers, but I'd love them more if they had a starting level - end level aproximate 😊 I love when a module shows your character growing in strength
Yes, this. Information a about starting and ending levels are important. Also information about henchmen would be nice.
Ah. Pillars of Eternity. Or as I like to call it …..Loading Screen Simulator.
@@jekw23 Truly, all of Obsidian crpg are like this with Tyranny being the absolute worst with the constant traveling between locations and overland "encounter" map.
Glad to see someone reviewing Solasta mods. I hope you will decide to do more of these.
Whats wrong with turnbase on multiplayer? How else we play in table top?
Not that style of turn-based. What makes having real-time work in Neverwinter Nights is that each server feels like a miniature MMO. If Solasta was to make a similar style multiplayer server like that but turn-based, it would not get as much traction. However, that isn't to say that turn-based co-op wouldn't work. Or something to that effect. Just not like Neverwinter Nights.
Having played through "Swordflight" chapter two just once, I can say it is *deep* . And judging from screenshots on Lilura's review of the series, there is *so* much replayability to it, simply by choosing differently aligned paths, classes, or even races. Tons of content you don't even realize is there until you re-roll with a different race or class. Sure, the tilesets and music are the standards that come with the base game, but really this is a module all about game mechanics, whether that's mastering things you mentioned like UMD, or persuading your way through conversations. Yeah, it's not as atmospheric or plot driven as some other modules, with comparatively low to moderate world-building, but sometimes you want an old-school style hack and slash RPG, and the grinding is actually fun once you figure out the tactics that work for your build (or realize your build is crap and have to back up a few levels). There were more than a few times I found myself downright giddy from wading in with my HiPS assassin with a lich, azer blackguard and evil dwarven defender in tow, just tearing up ridiculous amounts of enemies.
That song is "The Lonely Shepherd" by Zamfir (a pan flute musician). Was used in "Kill Bill". As long as I'm commenting here, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the "Auren Saga" modules ("Almraiven" and "Shadewood"). I felt they were very different from a lot of NWN I've played (albeit my forays are not as wide ranging as yours; I played through the OC and SoU and a good chunk of HotU but once, multiclassing specifically to get all quests). "Auren Saga" felt very well-mannered to me, in that it was stingy with items, gold and XP, and there was much more focus on rich story and depth. I also liked having my own base of operations to work on non-combat activities. Another big bonus for me was the music - not only original, but very atmospheric, especially in the second module. The music for a scene with a vampire makes it downright blood chilling.
Hey, somehow I missed commenting back to this. I haven't yet played through Auren Saga. I'm thinking of hitting it up this year. Just have to see if I can free up enough time with all the games I lined up to review by year end. I think what gets me excited about playing that module, from what I understand, it very much begins kinda-like a wizard school. Wherein, you will be using ingredients to craft things required to help complete the storyline. Seems cool. And with what you said, it just makes it that more interesting. I love it when they use original music. That's a big plus for me as well! Also, thanks for answering what that song was! :)
Your Icons are so nice and with color. How?
Hey, Sorry for the late reply. I like Reborn UI. You can pick it up from the workshop if you have the steam edition. Otherwise, it's on the Neverwinter Nights Vault and you can snag it that way and install.
This was a nice module, but it is a shame that you cannot use the subraces in the original Neverwinter Nights campaign or in the 2 expansions.
its a great game, my only knock on it on the ps5 is its hard to read all the info, the text is pretty tiny
I don't think you can install a font module on the ps5 or xbox. But, there are several that help improve the text-size for PC. Somehow, I feel you can't mod the console versions though. If you know that, please hit me back so I will know going forward. Thanks!
Thanks Good review Bought it Will play it after I finish Shadow guard
Heads up, this is 75% on Steam at the moment.
Nice video
I love video game soundtracks and this is how I discovered the game! Beautiful music but I've never tried the game at all. Thanks for your vid, I'm definitely going to pick it up when i can!
Solasta is such a great game, I love that fans went through the effort of making modules like this for it, even if the game isn't nowhere near as popular as NWN1 when it comes to user created stuff
I feel it might have legs in the modding scene. It will be interesting if they make a Solasta 2 and it offers even more robust options for mod makers. That would be something cool to see.
@@turnsupgaming5949 i think the only problem is that wotc have such a tight noose for 5e that the solasta devs weren’t even able to use the classes or races from most of the 5e books, and they make it hard to work around that with mods.
@@dylanbell268 This is true. Man, they are nearly soul sucking vampires themselves.
i’m glad solasta is receiving great mod modules.
My all time fav game. Not mentioned in this video, Beamdog was able to sell official mods sanctioned by Wotc/Hasbro until they pulled the license a few years ago. A real shame as this outstanding game should be better supported by the powers that be.
Nice channel, seems very underrated. As for Solasta 2, I have to agree with you. After closing on kickstarter for a mere 200k, it was insane how they managed to flesh this out as much as they could for a low budget. There are countless other games that used this stepping stones approach, can't blame them for not continuing to support it going into their next game. Hopefully they end up using the pathfinder 2e or 1e system in their next game as 5e is pretty bland for game progression as I've personally noticed from bg3.
this reboot not get a genesis version :P the snes shadowrun miss the genesis best to buy diference cyberdeck and upgraded from matrix hack
nice one :D this i can add a story for a shadow run return game story list?
Yeah, this is a custom mod. If you have the steam version it is inside the workshop and all you have to do is subscribe to it. Look for SNES Reboot when in Steam Workshop for Shadowrun Returns or Dragonfall. Both versions have it. I think the Dragonfall one is more polished.
i like the old shadowrun two version both together snes and genesis version :) the snes version i miss some like the genesis version in like the cyber matrix upgraded from genesis version the hirren shadowruns upgrade from genesis version
@@gassygasgassy I totally get you. I feel the same about that on several games from that era. It's nice when modders get involved and make things like that happen.
i can,t found free download :P i need to test this reboot something like the akimi glitch for have in the original snes version and the prices similar like the original snes version
Gotta work on your composition bro. I don't know that this video communicated any concrete points for me to take away. Feels like a lot of talking to say very little. Hope this feedback helps you grow your channel.
Feedback is always welcome! I'm just not into inflating videos when you really only have two or three things to address. Which is why they can't open servers like Neverwinter nights, they are done with dlc and showcasing the wealth of mods available. Maybe I should elaborate more. Something to consider.
I think you nailed it. Came into this looking to get an idea of what Solasta is and walked away informed. The brevity is also appreciated.
yeah i kinda agree, i came in knowing nothing about this game it didnt really touch on what the game is besides "DnD for computer" and modding community
Thanks for the review!
