Hi! I'm Trish! I'm a 53-year old Filipina-American living in Portugal! 🇵🇭🇺🇸🇵🇹 I moved with my family from Laguna Beach, California to the Algarve, Portugal in 2018. Many people tell me I look younger than my age so I wanted to share my life as looking youthful is more than just good skincare, fitness, and diet (although that definitely helps, too). I'm a generally positive person, a YAP accredited yoga teacher, write the blog www.nouglyduckling.com, and am the author of the book, "Whatever. How to Look Younger than Your Actual Age." Join me on my adventures! Hope this channel helps and inspires you! 🥰❤️🤩💯

So, it was great to go to the fair - not only for all the handicrafts exhibitors, cooking shows, plant and seed displays, and live music - but also to enjoy a perfect September evening in this beautiful...

Nice view of home industries in the Algarve, Trish, very nice looking area - loved the harbour view too. Waiting keenly to see your boat trip to Formosa island. What are organic fish products? 🤣🤣 You can hardly get GM fish, or fish fed on fertiliser 😛. Maybe sushi-fish species you can eat raw (salmon, maybe tuna too). A few days ago I finished a book called "Sushi for Beginners" - set in Dublin of all places. It was only indirectly about sushi (and yes, I do love it - we have several sushi take outs close by, we have it at least every 4-6 weeks) - but book was more about the trials and tribulations of young adults finding their way in the emotional minefield of human drama. Have cycled around Ireland - much friendlier than the UK, just rained too much for me. I had a quick look on G. maps, at 37N and well outside Gibraltar St. , the ocean must be fairly nippy (I prefer being in the water than on it - blessed to have lived in 2 warm water cities so far, looking forward to the third). Oh yes - just remembered, my best friend's son just enrolled for Portuguese as an elective subject. I asked why, he has no connection at all with either Portugal or Brazil. Turns out that he lived with a Portuguese family for two years of junior school while his mother was travelling to and fro sorting out their emigration process. Nice to have another Portuguese penpal to share this with.
Hi Nick! Haha - I guess there are no organic fish products... but the book you recently read sounds interesting! Thanks for letting me know - I'll have to look into it. I love sushi, too, and I'm good with reading about human drama. And yes - the water here is cold! I hardly ever go in it. 😅🤣😂 But I do love a beach and ocean view!🥰 I love that your best friend's son is learning Portuguese! It is such a difficult language but it incredible if you can master it and speak. I'm jealous of my son Jax who speaks fluently! Have a wonderful day! 😍
Jax can dance indeed...
You're so kind, Sergio! Thank you! Have a wonderful day! 😍🥰
Nice video
Interesting - I'll have to Shazam the music to find the origins. When I was in London studying I bought some W.African rhythmic drum music (CD long since lost), but some of it (eg. 05:20 ) kind of reminds me of that.
Wow - cool, Nick! I'll have to check out W. African drum music! 🤩
Interesting insight, thank you for sharing (and thanks for all your other comment-replies - will re-visit those during a break a bit later). Massive candles you light, wow - and a huge fire in the fireplace. I'm used to what we call "tea candles" - they probably are exactly measured to burn for 30 minutes. I was in La Plata a while back, my work host told me the Cathedral there is the tallest in the Southern Hemisphere, and since I had specially done an Española course before going to do this client training, I thought I'd attend a mass in Spanish. It turned out it was in Latin that day, irony is my school Latin (5 yrs and dux prize) was better than my Spanish 🤣😂 I actually checked while typing this msg, he is wrong, Maringá Cathedral (Brazil) is a full 40 ft taller, but latter is an ugly spaceship style architecture while La Plata Cathedral is beautiful, looks like a 90 pipe church organ.
Haha! That's funny about the Latin mass but congrats on your Latin prowess! I took Latin in high school so I am so impressed! 🤩
@@nouglyduckling That is amazing, that you elected to take Latin. Why did you choose it, if I may ask? Did you enjoy it? Do you still benefit from the learning techniques it requires? I had a huge argument about it with my dad when I had to choose senior school subjects. He only wanted me to do it so I could study law or medicine, I didn't object to it per se [he, he - had to slip that in], but I wanted to put some other elective as first choice to avoid distasteful other electives I really did not want to do [german, art or music]. I lost that battle with my dad, but ended up avoiding the terrible trio above. Latin was hard work - it took 50% of my homework prep time, but after 2 years it kind of gelled - and the next 3 years were easier. I did such a great senior year project on Vesuvius, wrote lots of it in Lingua Latina - got 99% I think for it - still have that full mini thesis to this day. There's lots more to my Latin Legacy - another chat though.
Hi Tricia, seeing that blue sky makes me envious !! Anyway it's nice that people in south European countries still value local markets. While not all produces are grown by the sellers, some still are (unlike what we find in supermarkets). Plus when we from a small seller we know were our hard earned money goes to. Wishing you guys a pleasant & sunny week ! 🙋♂
Hi Sergio! Yes I really like to purchase from the small sellers when I have the opportunity. Not sure if it is always true, but I feel that the produce is healthier and better. 🥬😅 Have a wonderful week! 🥰
Tay-Tay is great - I spotted her talent even before she was showcased on the cover of TIME some years back. But there is an even better group of young ladies making a mark. Jax is about 4 years too young for them now, but you check out this band - you missed their last performance by a few months: The Warning will perform at Mexico’s prestigious Pa’l Norte and Vive Latino Festivals, followed by a month-long full-scale European tour this spring. It kicks off in Madrid at Sala La Riviera on April 4th April 4 - Madrid, Spain - Sala La Riviera 5 - Lisbon, Portugal - LAV Lisboa Ao Vivo
That's so cool about being an early fan! 🤩I need to check out The Warning! Do you have a favorite song of theirs?
@@nouglyduckling I absolutely do - and you know the amazing coincidence, their latest release of it arrived in my notifications about 30 minutes ago. I listened through their full concert at Teatro Metroplitan (try that when you have over an hour to listen to it carefully) very early on after I discovered them, and the song Money (their own original) struck me as better than any cover they have done, and far better than the super group Pink Floyd's landmark album, Dark Side of the Moon. so here's tonight's notification to me The Warning uploaded: The Warning - MONEY (Live from Pepsi Center CDMX) 49 minutes ago ua-cam.com/video/jtNVfDb8C5o/v-deo.html&pp=wgIGCgQQAhgB
@@NR_Home-Videos Wow! Talented group of young ladies. They're a little too rock for me 😅 but I appreciate their talent! 🤩
@@nouglyduckling It'll grow on you. They have some acoustic sets that are brilliant. Just remember that Elvis 70 years ago, the Beatles 60 years ago, were also regarded as brash and raucous impetuous youth too 🤣
@@NR_Home-Videos OK! 😅🤣😂
Nice (different) home-vid, thank you. Did you mention it was maybe in the Moorish style?
Hi Nick! Yes - I had read that the building style was inspired by Neo-classical/Moorish influences.
Great memory of Wimbledon, thank you for sharing. Nice to see that the Para-Tennis got side by side billing with centre court semi-final in the big screen open air venue. Nice way to spend the day - even if you didn't get into an actual court. Do you need to book for a day pass to the All England Grounds during the semi final days?
I don't know what kind of pass I got - I think it was a day pass. It cost £20 and during semi-finals! 🤩
@@nouglyduckling Wonderful experience for you, Tennis is a unique sport in that at any level you play you enjoy it as much as you do watching the pro's. There were some international ladies comps here last year, very good to watch them on just the common man's courts at the local university. Can you play at all? Oh yes, when I was in Philippines I played badminton with the local club a few nights - I was quite a good player back home, but wow, their average players were so much better than I was - like their national sport.
Lucky fish - getting to an Olympics. Best I could do was watch my favourite sports on youtube live feeds, a few on the satellite channels at my club. OK - so I'm going to let the dialogue run while I try do some work ... and see what sounds unique about your trip - hope you mention that French swimming legend, Marchand - and the Canadian superstar, Summers (will get their full names later).
Hi Nick! I love that you are watching my videos while doing your work! 😍🥰😅 Thank you!!! These Paris Olympics were amazing, right? So many incredible athletes stepped out in the forefront. Leon Marchand was a superstar - wow! Of course my favorite (besides Evy Leibfarth who we actually watched win the bronze) was Carlos Yulo!
@@nouglyduckling Sorry - I did not get back to finish my hanging comments yesterdat, work called louder than Trish 🤣🤣 Of course it was Leon Marchand, couldn't get his first name. I just fed my direct comment text to an AI with no other explanation, exactly as I posted here, and the AI knew exactly what I needed: It sounds like you're referring to two prominent swimmers: Leon Marchand from France and Summer McIntosh from Canada. You watched very different events, so lucky you could see a US medal. I've only been to one Olympics event live - baseball in fact, as I played at the time. It's an experience, the train trip tere, the massive crowds, the buying of mementoes (still have my Olympics sweatshirt). So LA 2028 : I must test the waters regarding staying with my penfriend who lives in LA near the yacht club so to see if I can stay with them for a week or so. Maybe see you there 😁
Trish - super fun video to watch, thank you for your insights. I was very curious because I've visited Lisbon, and San Diego, and stayed in Iligan for 3 weeks too. I had a 6 hour transit in Lisbon on a long haul flight. I remember the airport was so close to the city, I could take an easy stroll to the centre (just looked it up now - an easy 6 km stroll due south to the banks of the Tagus Strait, take in the lovely boulevarde's, find a bottle shop to by a classic bottle of Port, then sit and chill watching the boats on the Atlantic before my next 12 hour flight. I was going to ask how you managed with Portuguese, do you cope with just knowledge of a bit of Spanish? In California, approximately 28% of residents speak Spanish at home, but many Californians have at least some understanding of Spanish. In the Algarve region of Portugal, around 30% to 50% of long-term residents are estimated to understand English, especially in tourist areas.
Thanks, Nick! Actually, most people speak English here, especially in the Algarve! I have some Expat friends who don't know any Portuguese and have lived here for 15+ years! As for me, I actually took a Portuguese language class and passed to the A2 level (if interested, I have a video about it on my channel). I am barely conversational but it does help me get by and I like to at least attempt to speak with the Portuguese in their native language (even though I am not the best). Most appreciate the attempt and are kind about it. 🙏 My son Jax is of course, fluent. Ahhh to start language learning when you are young! 🤩
@@nouglyduckling Interesting that it's a little English-speaking enclave. Tell me, is it US or UK spelling 🤣? I'd bet the UK-expats are dominant. But not to speak any Porra is a bit reverse-xenophobic don't you think? Well done on getting your A2 language proficiency rating, good work Trish. But then you did do Latin I read (that must surely help - and not knowing any Spanish to confuse with the very similar Portuguese can only help too), will talk about that in that post.
Just speak Tagalog...hinde bagay Ingles

Hello..my.😊friend
Hello! Have a great day! 😀
no need to be so close to the camera
Thanks for the suggestion.
Hi Tricia, Interesting video, pity the background noise / music is overpowering your narration. Some of your acquaintances go back home, others want to try different countries. But i'm glad that you made many friends, something not that easy after 40ies... Living close to Faro means you can enjoy the beach, fly cheaply to many destinations in Europe & drive to Spain. As for Jax, he's growing in a safe environment & he seems to like being there. No country is perfect but as long as it ticks the most boxes... Another mass shooting in Alabama, bringing it to the 403 the number of mass shootings in the USA this year. Yeah I think you & ur family are better in "boring" old Europe... 🙄 Wishing you guys a good Sunday, take care 🙋♂
Happy Sunday, Sergio! Oh no! I didn't hear about the mass shooting in Alabama - that is so terrible. 😩😫 It does make it even more attractive to stay here, a noticeably safer environment and a great place for kids to grow up. (PS - I have to remember not to do do videos in restaurants that are blasting loud background music.) Have a great week! 😍🤩

Driving to Lisbon is madness - it is so easy to take a train. If you buy your ticket 8 days in advance you get a discount of almost 50%. If you are a senior you can travel immediately and get a 50%discount. If you drive to Lisbon your car parking can cost as much as your hotel.. When you go by train you can relax immediately - the buffet car on the train sells excellent wine. That is a big difference between the mindset between an American and a European - driving is madness. The train is much faster.
You are so right! We often take the train or bus to Lisbon! It really is so convenient and you don't have to deal with the hassle of Lisbon parking. Thanks for the tip reminder!! 🤩
great day to Portugal celebrating 50 years of independence and a beautiful day for you beautiful family
Thank you! 🥰 It really was! It is so wonderful that we can celebrate 50 years of Portugal's independence! 🤩
Sorry, but we didn't celebrate 50 years of independence. We celebrated 50 years of liberation from a autocratic regime. Portugal is independent since 1140, with a interregnum of 60 years between 1580 to 1640, where the country was in personnal union with the Spanish crown.
Thank you, Emanuel, for clarifying! I appreciate it. 🤩
This is very helpful. I would love to receive any practice materials for the A2 exam that you'd be willing to share.
Yes of course! I just sent it to you! Good luck! 🤩
Hi Tricia, something for sure is that Jax is spoiled (in a good sense). You're giving so much to him, living & travelling Europe, going to events, etc You guys surely had a good time a the Olympics. Your mum was there, the weather was nice and you guys saw many sports. The opening ceremony wasn't just controversial, it was offensive to many. As for Paris being empty, it was the holidays but many left to avoid the chaos. Have a nice day, take care 🙋♂
Ahh Sergio! I hear you and think about that - hope I'm not spoiling Jax too much! 😅 You are right - many Parisians left to avoid the chaos so the city was downright quiet. Thank you for your thoughtful comments - I so appreciate it!!! Have a wonderful day! Bom fim de Semana! 🥰🥰

The United Emirates of Amerika is a superb POS! Period!
I missed this; thanks.
You should go next year! 🤩
Is there much difference between the car inspection In Portugal & in the US ? Within the EU, the tests are more of less the same. The only difference is the validation period. In Portugal between the age of 4 & 8 , it's every 2 years & then it's annually. In Ireland / Spain between the age of 4 & 10 it's every 2 years & then it's annually. In France / Germany after the age of 4, it's every 2 years. The EU might harmonise it one day....
Hi Sergio! I just looked it up. Generally, most states require cars to be inspected at least once per year, but this varies from state to state. So weird because I don’t remember ever doing a car inspection in the US! 😅 But here in Portugal we’ve gone every year because our Prius is older than 8 years old. 😭
@@nouglyduckling Hi Tricia, after posting the comment I googled it and it seems car inspection in the US is cheaper but is nothing like in the EU (as you know by now). Nobody likes going for the test as it often means repairs but without them some would drive with no breaks / used tyres, etc.
@@SERGIO-cr6uy That's true! I hardly ever see any cars broken down on the side of the street here in Portugal so I guess that's a good thing. Off to the mechanic I go! 😅🤣
@@nouglyduckling Breaking down cars have mostly engine issues, car inspections don't check that. It's mostly safety (breaks, tires, lights..) & polution check. But for everyone's safety on the road & pedestrians, it's a good thing cars are checked and people forced to get the issue repaired. Since you have a car, why don't you guys do a trip to Séville, Spain ? 2h30 from Albufeira by car

Hello Tricia! I'm glad that you guys went there, it's a nice event for adults & children. As an adult, i prefer the night time when it gets busy, the lighting, the smell, the music (hence some getting there late). If it was Medieval / Arabic event, it's because a good chunk of Portugal / Spain / Italy was invaded & colonised by the Moors. If you want another tip, there's the National Horse Fair in Golegã (01/11/24 to 11/11/24) It's about 1h30 drive from Lisbon (heading north) It's not the closest event for you guys & it's quite a specific for horse lovers. I miss Porto. Need to spend more time there next trip. Did you stay at a centrally located location?
Yes - we stayed at The Poet's Inn, which is very central. It was a very cute hostel/inn and so easy to walk everywhere. We got a room that had a private bathroom and the staff was incredibly helpful and courteous. I would stay there again!
Oh, yes, I was there in Porto for 11 days. Nice place. RIver was beautiful.
Oh lucky you!! 🤩 I've never spent that much time there. I would love to do that - I absolutely love Porto and yes, the Douro is beautiful! 😍

Quite nice, I wonder if anyone can buy a blank one & personalise it and get it baked. That would be nice, even if there's an extra fee.
Hi Sergio! I'm sure you can do this - especially if the artisans are actually present and you can explain exactly what you want! 😍
@@nouglyduckling I wasn't thinking about getting something personalised by the artisan himself but doing the decorating ourselves. Wouldn't you prefer a plate decorated by Jax than a professional? It’s beautiful and I wish I *had* visited it, but it has nothing to do with Hogwarts! “ BUT The black capes worn by the students of Coimbra's University inspired her for Harry Potter. (True fact). Portugal had a way bigger impact on literature & movie history than just them Harry Potter black capes. During WWII in 1941, a British naval intelligence officer called Ian Fleming was in Palácio Estoril hotel. At that time Portugal was neutral in WWII & that hotel was "known" as a spy nest (Germans & Brits). Ian was there to gather & report any useful information to British secret services. Few years later, Ian Fleming inspired by that spy game started publishing novels & his first book was Casino Royal. Sir Ian Fleming is just the author of one of the most profitable movie franchise known as James bond 007.
So fascinating! Thank you for sharing this info! I had no idea about the Bond influence! 🤩I read different reports about Livraria Lello's influence on Harry Potter but one thing is for certain, they are taking advantage of the JK Rowling rumor - Harry Potter is very much on display and there are many sections dedicated just to the books in the store. 😅 And yes... I cannot believe we have been here almost 6 years - an adventure year abroad has turned into us into practically full-fledged Portuguese residents! 🤣😂😍
Nice videos
Nobody's gonna pay for your nonsense advices on FB. Stop spamming small channels with the idea to scam them. UA-cam should study your case & ban you.
Wow
It is a beautiful store! 🤩😍
@@nouglyduckling Wow wonderful video. All the videos on your channel are fantastic. But your video views are lower. Because your optimization is very poor. Your optimization needs to improve as soon as possible.,,,....
@@mdrifatkhan749 STOP spamming small channels trying to sell some crap. What you do is a scam.
@@mdrifatkhan749 let me guess you want to sell visibility to small YT channels? And you expect people to fall for that scam?
@@mdrifatkhan749 do people fall for that scam?
wow, didnt know there was this restaurant; would have eaten there had I known; also, have you had some amazing Goa food in Lisbon? I ate at three restaurants there, and amazing.
Ooh! Please let me know the Goa restaurants! I've never had Goa food. I'd love to try! Thank you for letting me know... and yes, I highly recommend Mr. Lin's! 😍
