Great seeing you, I am indeed going to study with you. I too cannot stand too long, cannot even stand to bake. But I have been told yoga ,stretches , Pilates strengthening the muscle supporting the spine is number one. Your sincerity speaks volumes !

Good to see you back Ruth. I’ve been water gilding for almost 50 years now but still learn from some of your videos. I remember when a book of 24c loose leaf was less than a fiver! I find it’s not necessarily the heavy lifting that puts out my back occasionally but usually the stretching with an out of balance piece. Loving your workshop.

Ruth, I understand the back pain thing. I have worked standing over a large drawing table for 35 years. I also understand that there is a range of "best working height" that is necessary. What I do these days is wear an ice pack belt off and on which you could wear when you are not making videos. You can work with it until it loses its coldness, and re-freeze it again That helps me. Great to see you back!
Sorry you have problems as well. I do used ice packs when its bad. Mostly I use heat. Didn't show in the video as it doesn't film well (you can't see what I am doing) I have stands I put on the bench to raise the piece up which stops some of the bad posture.

Thanks. It’s been sitting business wise for years but standing baking prior. I have a stunning Georgian girandole mirror with a stag , slight damage missing upper parts but watching your mould development with silicone rubber will solve. I’m starting back at yoga soon H
You have a very beautiful studio. I’m considering incorporating some gilding into the edges of my painting panels and your videos are very helpful and well presented, thank you. Back problems, maybe to a lesser extent, but me too… ugh.
I can definitely relate to back issues. Definitely not fun to deal with, and even just a small sprain can take days or even a week to feel better. I've recently taken an interest in your channel (and subscribed) because I generally love restoration work (and seeing items come back from a derelict state) but I also have an upcoming project: an 1840s American wall clock that was given to me some years ago which will need complete regilding. It had been painted or spray painted with gold paint, and my friend in the US who had acquired the clock had stripped it to see if the original gilding might still be underneath, but it was about 90% missing. There are traces of the original bole (grey/black and a strip of red, but the rest is nearly all bare gesso. He decided it was too much of a project, so it ended up in my hands. I've done oil gilding before on another project with acrylic gesso, imitation leaf, but the finish turned out slightly less impressive than I had hoped. I want to try using proper bole and water gilding to restore this clock case. It's a simple circle (sort of the opposite to a convex mirror frame) so it should be easy to work on. As you mentioned in the beginning of the video, it's been difficult to source traditional gilding materials (I'm in Canada). Several places stock gold leaf, but many shops are out of stock for clay bole, rabbit skin glue is hard to find, and I have not found any source for whiting yet. I will likely need to order from multiple different shops. The videos about compo have been extremely useful because I also have an old Victorian frame where the outside edge has compo decoration which is about 75% missing and damaged. I had thought that this was plaster, but now that I understand what it actually is, and how it can be recreated and stuck back onto the frame, I'm more inclined to try to restore it. I had been seriously considering modifying the frame to either cut it down or replace the compo edge since it's almost beyond help. There is only one section about the width of a hand that isn't damaged and could be used for a mould. This comment is getting way too long, but I appreciate all the knowledge you're sharing.
great vids -just an idea that special anti fatigue rubber floor matting that is for workshop workers who stand a lot is meant to be good iv not used it but it looks like it is a mesh and is thick
Very interesting cemetery. Here in the states they're pretty much put far from residential areas, but this one being so nicely laid out it probably is more inviting to live near. I love the shows that Richard puts out, but it's been a while since I've seen any on UA-cam because I saw all of the ones that I could find months ago.

Thank you. 😊 The compo eagle won't be gilded due to cost restrictions from the customer. I am planning a video with a ho-ho bird. I could gild that. You would gild in a similar way to an eagle. Thanks for the suggestion. 😁

It's so good to see you again! I'd really love to take the online classes when they're ready. I have a bunch of old beautiful frames with nothing in them, in various states of repair, hanging on my walls. I bought one online that people thought said 1945 on the back, but I'm pretty sure it's 1845 because of the style and the old tag. Funny how you can tell age from the back of a frame. Can I order supplies from your suppliers to be sent to California, or should I try to find a place in San Francisco? I'd rather buy from yours if they need more customers. Thanks!

Hello Ruth. Have you thought about doing a 3D scan of the headstone details? It's called photogrametry and you can do it with you phone camera. Take lots of pictures above and below the detail in lots of angles. An overcast day is best. Then upload all those photos to your laptop. Search UA-cam for "photogrametry using mushroom and meshmixer". It will make a digital 3d model you can then have 3D printed in resin. You can then make a mold of the resin 3D printed copy. I am doing that to make a 3D model of the bow of my boat and hire a digital sculpter person model an eagle using the exact shape of my boat. I'll print the eagle in resin and oil guild it using what I've learned from you and have beautiful golden eagle ornament on the bow of my boat.

Amazing to have you back! I know how is to have back issues. I can't carry more than 20 kg without messing up my disks. But working the muscles in the back helps a lot. Do you sell the frames located in the first floor?

If you ever find yourself looking for an extra income, consider your own eStore. The Asian market, especially the Japanese, loves European antiques. Good luck with your back!
Loved this series I’ve been so inspired I started looking for old frames to guild myself. Super excited to know there’s an online series in the works! I’m curious to know if there’s any good literature on how identify the age of frames based on styles and boles. But most of all I’m happy you’re back on the YT 🎉🎉
Glad I have got you into restoration 😁. Nothing on bole. There is a book 'A history of European picture frames' and a mirror one called 'The mirror book' they are both mostly early frames not much Victorian onwards.

Welcome back Ruth, thanks for the vid, I know from bitter experience of back issues, at several points your head is over your central core causing strain, have you tried an adjustable horizontal standing desk? been a literal back saver for one. One question on the crazing of that mirror is it possible to consolidate with isinglass for example?
If the gesso cracks are bigger I do sometimes injection with fish glue. Often it's down to what the customer wants. As I'm a restorer rather than a conservator, if its damaged its sometimes cheaper to replace. I do work with easels and have little stands I can put on my bench. I had that mirror higher but it didn't work on camera you couldn't see what I was doing, so took the stands away.

Just inside your front door. The convex mirror you restored for the lady dealer and you donated the Eagle on the top. Still in your shop?. Your wall situation will require " tanking" prior to plastering. Nice ,friendly space that inspires creativity I think. M
Yes that convex was mine the tv "borrowed it" for the show. I had to rip the plaster and tanking off that wall because the damp proof guy drilled the damp proof holes 2 foot under the outside ground level 🤷♀️ I only discovered that when the neighbour left the tap open on a water butt for months. I'm just trying to dry it out before I do his job properly 🙄

I do little restoration of statues, smaller, bigger... I do oil gilding š hours, 15 min., when decorating, the edges of mantels etc. It was diffickut one - to keep the line straight when putting the oil, a nd since I do it with metal leaves it does not stick properly, does not cover the lines. Hard time really ...
Welcome back! You have been missed. Loved the tour of your workshop & going for a walk with you! I am looking forward to your online courses. Regarding your back issues....may I suggest you google Surgical Ergonomics Recommendations and/or Ergonomic Best Practices for Surgeons. I know you're not in the medical profession but it's estimated that up to 70% of surgeons & vet surgeons suffer from neck & back pain - because they're bent over for extended periods of time - often whilst standing. This might sound familiar to you? The information online for surgeons might give you some ideas on how to improve, reduce, minimise your ownwork related MSD. You'll find information which will cover everything from making sure you stand correctly, to being aware of the degree youre tilting your head - to which stretches are best. It's become a huge issue as MSD is leading to depression & burn out. Reserch into resolving this issue is still in it's infancy but microbreaks, stretching & workplace ergonomics are all factors that are now being considered & so are documented online - and this might help you too. :)

I've made one bench taller which works well. I also have stands I've made to put on the existing benchs. They looked silly on camera, but I normally use them.
As well as taller work benches you may get some relief with sit stand stools, wheeled or static. That way maybe your back will have some support without restricting your upper body movement. The ones with a short back support. You should definitely take more breaks to change your movements. I guess its hard to do that when you are working to deadlines self employed. Leek is nice but if you move to Derbyshire I would volunteer to be an unpaid elf and sort your stock out lol. Your videos are much appreciated. Thank you.
So sorry to hear about your back problems. Any problems I have I look at every possible avenue diet stretches. If you are self-employed all too easy to ignore yourself too busy.
Hello Ruth! Love watching your videos! I've been tryin to do this bit big project. I've been making this a 7ft/very tall oil painting/portrait, and been tryin to figure out this frame to help finish it up. I want to try and gild the frame. I've been tryin figure out these ornamental bits and how I should even make them. - cost effective and "practical"(?) - i was thinking of wether or not to make the ornaments out of plaster, or possibly air dry clay to keep stuff maybe simpler, or maybe even both somehow. (Could I even gild air dry clay somehow? Be it oil or water gilding ;-;) -would gilding something that's cheap like this even be worth it or maybe I should paint it? A good gold paint perhaps? (Btw, I'm from Hawaii :D) any helpful input on my dilemma is welcomed 🥲
I greet you with respect ! 1. I noticed that you mixed the bolus between Polshemit and the red Bolus from LeFranc. Are there any chances of exfoliation? 2. What is the concentration of rabbit glue? 3. The adhesive is composed of water mixed with alcohol?...what percentage? Thank you and I hope to receive an answer!
You can mix any bole colour together from any make, not a problem. I use 12-1 for bole. The recipe for the gilding water is in the description of the water gilding for beginners video.
@@Foula3la__2 nothing is a good alternative to oil size. If it's for inside you could use acrylic size but it never truly drys, it's used for crafts like card making where it doesn't really matter. So I wouldn't recommend it
@@RuthTappinGilder Thanks Ruth, you're very kind with your time. I have a replica of a Roman Weiler type cavalry helmet (1st century CE). The helmet was originally brass, but it was tinned with some gold details applied by electroplating. The tinning is excellent, but the gold electroplating, applied on top of the tin, is wearing off - there was really no bond to the tin in the first place. I've now removed the electroplated gold, and I was hoping to reapply gold leaf to the same areas. I was planning on using an oil size and loose leaf, as I've seen you do. Would this be the best method? Unfortunately the areas of the helmet I wish to guild are raised reliefs in repousse, so I don't think transfer leaf would work.
About the visit at semetary, in Orthodox church there is a useful virtue called memory of death. The idea is, I think, not to be over-related with this world that is passing inevitably and prepare yourself for the the real life afterwards.
can you increase the prices you charge for you gilding services ? i would fiind it hard to believe that there is a better or more experienced gilder than you in your area.
My dear Ruth, Look at the hight of your working table!? How can that posture be good for any back? Get yourself a hight-adjustable table and thank me later.
You may not have noticed the tall bench on the walk through upstairs for smaller frames. I also have stands for putting on the bigger benches, like what was under the laptop. I started filming with them under the mirror, but it was hard to see what I was doing, so I took them away for filming. I make do with what I can make. The prices of legs for sit/stand 7'x4' heavy duty benches is a lot and I regularly use 4-5 of my benches going from piece to piece. Just because I don't show it on the video doesn't mean it hasn't been thought of.

I can definitely relate to back issues. Definitely not fun to deal with, and even just a small sprain can take days or even a week to feel better. I've recently taken an interest in your channel (and subscribed) because I generally love restoration work (and seeing items come back from a derelict state) but I also have an upcoming project: an 1840s American wall clock that was given to me some years ago which will need complete regilding. It had been painted or spray painted with gold paint, and my friend in the US who had acquired the clock had stripped it to see if the original gilding might still be underneath, but it was about 90% missing. There are traces of the original bole (grey/black and a strip of red, but the rest is nearly all bare gesso. He decided it was too much of a project, so it ended up in my hands. I've done oil gilding before on another project with acrylic gesso, imitation leaf, but the finish turned out slightly less impressive than I had hoped. I want to try using proper bole and water gilding to restore this clock case. It's a simple circle (sort of the opposite to a convex mirror frame) so it should be easy to work on. As you mentioned in the beginning of the video, it's been difficult to source traditional gilding materials (I'm in Canada). Several places stock gold leaf, but many shops are out of stock for clay bole, rabbit skin glue is hard to find, and I have not found any source for whiting yet. I will likely need to order from multiple different shops. The videos about compo have been extremely useful because I also have an old Victorian frame where the outside edge has compo decoration which is about 75% missing and damaged. I had thought that this was plaster, but now that I understand what it actually is, and how it can be recreated and stuck back onto the frame, I'm more inclined to try to restore it. I had been seriously considering modifying the frame to either cut it down or replace the compo edge since it's almost beyond help. There is only one section about the width of a hand that isn't damaged and could be used for a mould. This comment is getting way too long, but I appreciate all the knowledge you're sharing.
great vids -just an idea that special anti fatigue rubber floor matting that is for workshop workers who stand a lot is meant to be good iv not used it but it looks like it is a mesh and is thick

Very interesting cemetery. Here in the states they're pretty much put far from residential areas, but this one being so nicely laid out it probably is more inviting to live near. It's so good to see you again! I'd really love to take the online classes when they're ready. I have a bunch of old beautiful frames with nothing in them, in various states of repair, hanging on my walls. I bought one online that people thought said 1945 on the back, but I'm pretty sure it's 1845 because of the style and the old tag. Funny how you can tell age from the back of a frame. Can I order supplies from your suppliers to be sent to California, or should I try to find a place in San Francisco? I'd rather buy from yours if they need more customers. Thanks!

Hello Ruth. Have you thought about doing a 3D scan of the headstone details? It's called photogrametry and you can do it with you phone camera. Take lots of pictures above and below the detail in lots of angles. An overcast day is best. Then upload all those photos to your laptop. Search UA-cam for "photogrametry using mushroom and meshmixer". It will make a digital 3d model you can then have 3D printed in resin. You can then make a mold of the resin 3D printed copy. I am doing that to make a 3D model of the bow of my boat and hire a digital sculpter person model an eagle using the exact shape of my boat. I'll print the eagle in resin and oil guild it using what I've learned from you and have beautiful golden eagle ornament on the bow of my boat.
Yes I think it's fascinating. Every time I see it I think I should look into that. I hope one day I actually will.

I know how is to have back issues. I can't carry more than 20 kg without messing up my disks. But working the muscles in the back helps a lot.

Loved this series I’ve been so inspired I started looking for old frames to guild myself. Super excited to know there’s an online series in the works! I’m curious to know if there’s any good literature on how identify the age of frames based on styles and boles. But most of all I’m happy you’re back on the YT 🎉🎉
Glad I have got you into restoration 😁. Nothing on bole. There is a book 'A history of European picture frames' and a mirror one called 'The mirror book' they are both mostly early frames not much Victorian onwards.

Welcome back Ruth, thanks for the vid, I know from bitter experience of back issues, at several points your head is over your central core causing strain, have you tried an adjustable horizontal standing desk? been a literal back saver for one. One question on the crazing of that mirror is it possible to consolidate with isinglass for example?
If the gesso cracks are bigger I do sometimes injection with fish glue. Often it's down to what the customer wants. As I'm a restorer rather than a conservator, if its damaged its sometimes cheaper to replace.
I do work with easels and have little stands I can put on my bench. I had that mirror higher but it didn't work on camera you couldn't see what I was doing, so took the stands away.

Just inside your front door. The convex mirror you restored for the lady dealer and you donated the Eagle on the top. Still in your shop?. Your wall situation will require " tanking" prior to plastering. Nice ,friendly space that inspires creativity I think. M
Yes that convex was mine the tv "borrowed it" for the show.
I had to rip the plaster and tanking off that wall because the damp proof guy drilled the damp proof holes 2 foot under the outside ground level 🤷♀️ I only discovered that when the neighbour left the tap open on a water butt for months. I'm just trying to dry it out before I do his job properly 🙄

I do little restoration of statues, smaller, bigger... I do oil gilding š hours, 15 min., when decorating, the edges of mantels etc. It was diffickut one - to keep the line straight when putting the oil, a
nd since I do it with metal leaves it does not stick properly, does not cover the lines. Hard time really ...

Welcome back! You have been missed. Loved the tour of your workshop & going for a walk with you! I am looking forward to your online courses. Regarding your back issues....may I suggest you google Surgical Ergonomics Recommendations and/or Ergonomic Best Practices for Surgeons. I know you're not in the medical profession but it's estimated that up to 70% of surgeons & vet surgeons suffer from neck & back pain - because they're bent over for extended periods of time - often whilst standing. This might sound familiar to you? The information online for surgeons might give you some ideas on how to improve, reduce, minimise your ownwork related MSD. You'll find information which will cover everything from making sure you stand correctly, to being aware of the degree youre tilting your head - to which stretches are best. It's become a huge issue as MSD is leading to depression & burn out. Reserch into resolving this issue is still in it's infancy but microbreaks, stretching & workplace ergonomics are all factors that are now being considered & so are documented online - and this might help you too. :)

I've made one bench taller which works well. I also have stands I've made to put on the existing benchs. They looked silly on camera, but I normally use them.
As well as taller work benches you may get some relief with sit stand stools, wheeled or static. That way maybe your back will have some support without restricting your upper body movement. The ones with a short back support.
You should definitely take more breaks to change your movements. I guess its hard to do that when you are working to deadlines self employed.
Leek is nice but if you move to Derbyshire I would volunteer to be an unpaid elf and sort your stock out lol.

Hello Ruth! Love watching your videos! I've been tryin to do this bit big project. I've been making this a 7ft/very tall oil painting/portrait, and been tryin to figure out this frame to help finish it up.
I want to try and gild the frame. I've been tryin figure out these ornamental bits and how I should even make them.

- i was thinking of wether or not to make the ornaments out of plaster, or possibly air dry clay to keep stuff maybe simpler, or maybe even both somehow.

I would go with plaster. The French frames are plaster. You can water and oil gild it. It will get heave at that size so make a strong wooden frame.
Can you guild on an oil painting? Or is gold shell best for that?

You can mix any bole colour together from any make, not a problem. I use 12-1 for bole. The recipe for the gilding water is in the description of the water gilding for beginners video.

@@Foula3la__2 nothing is a good alternative to oil size. If it's for inside you could use acrylic size but it never truly drys, it's used for crafts like card making where it doesn't really matter. So I wouldn't recommend it
Hi Ruth, can you burnish gold leaf applied to a metal surface using oil sizing?
No you can't burnish oil gilding, just water gilding.
@@RuthTappinGilder Thanks Ruth, you're very kind with your time. I have a replica of a Roman Weiler type cavalry helmet (1st century CE). The helmet was originally brass, but it was tinned with some gold details applied by electroplating. The tinning is excellent, but the gold electroplating, applied on top of the tin, is wearing off - there was really no bond to the tin in the first place. I've now removed the electroplated gold, and I was hoping to reapply gold leaf to the same areas. I was planning on using an oil size and loose leaf, as I've seen you do. Would this be the best method? Unfortunately the areas of the helmet I wish to guild are raised reliefs in repousse, so I don't think transfer leaf would work.

Practical gilding gives some good basic gilding advice. For more restoration and gilding, Art and Techniques gilding at Versailles is a good book.

You may not have noticed the tall bench on the walk through upstairs for smaller frames. I also have stands for putting on the bigger benches, like what was under the laptop. I started filming with them under the mirror, but it was hard to see what I was doing, so I took them away for filming. I make do with what I can make. The prices of legs for sit/stand 7'x4' heavy duty benches is a lot and I regularly use 4-5 of my benches going from piece to piece. Just because I don't show it on the video doesn't mean it hasn't been thought of.
