Mastering the Art of Hand-Spinning: A Beginner's Guide to Long Wool
A spin along would be a good excuse to get some of my mountain of fleece reduced. Because I like a thicker yarn, I’ve become a fan of making (my own version) of Plötulopi. -Not that I have Icelandic fleece… I use Polwarth and it’s come out quite nice 😬 Becca, does Andrew have to watch the salt water going into his wheelchair…(you know, like you have to with taking a car onto the beach!)???
A spin a long will be fun
I could b interested in a spin a long
A spin-along sounds like fun, even if I end up enjoying looking at other people's work rather than spinning a lot myself. I got a kit with samples of fleece dyed in Christmas-y colours yesterday. (No rare or exotic breeds, just Corriedale.) My problem is that I don't know what I want to make with it which means I don't know how to spin it. There's 100 g or about 3 1/2 ozs of fleece. If, for instance, I decided to make a pair of Christmas socks then I would be going for a 3 ply worsted spin, but if I decided to make a Christmas beanie then I'd be going to a 2 ply spin. As my natural spinning style is very fine, I'd actually have enough wool for at least 2 beanies, if not a third. So I suppose I could make a scarf with the rest of the wool.
A spin alony would be great!
I’ve started doing this too. It’ll be nice to join in yours!
Hi Becca, Yes I'd love to join in a spin along but might need some pointers on getting hold of some of the rarer breeds. Many thanks Jenny
yes I'm interested! i spin on sat mornings but would welcome extra time for spinning!
I'd love it. The more practice I get, the better I get at spinning. I only started back in May of this year but I really do enjoy it; it's quite relaxing, and my cats have thoroughly enjoyed the "purr pads" I made with my first spinning attempts, which came out to around a bulky weight when plied. :-) Ooh, but I did love the sound of the seagulls! Thank you for the video and the lovely sights!
Hi Becca, I hope you and Andrew are both OK and Millie is too, especially after trying to eat the dead Dog Fish xx❣️❣️❣️🐕❣️ Thankyou so much for sharing this video podcast. I could almost smell the sea air. Temperature here has only got to about 9c today, not had anything above 12 for a good couple of weeks. Andrew makes delightful Donuts. 🍩🍩😂 I'd love to do a Spin Along..I don't have much in the way of Fleece, I don't think it would be from an endangered sheep breed. 🐑🐑 I hope you enjoyed your late Lunch. Take care and stay safe Lots of love and Big Hugs to you both and Cuddles for Millie...Jen xxxx ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🐕🫂🫂
Ow ow ow, you’ve “twisted” my arm to “ply” along 😂😂😂
She's got you to com "ply" has she?
A spin along quite interesting. If one could find a small amount of fleece from endangered species. I’ll have to do some research.😊
I might be interested in a spin along. I don't have much here at home in the way of endangered species fleece, but I sure do have a lot of regular old fleece that needs done up.
I would be interested ❤
I could be interested in a spin along.
Seems like there's a moth for everything!
Don't I know it !.
My father used to keep bees. I don't have the inclination or the strength to be a beekeeper. I admire those who do. I do, however, love honey. So I search out the local raw honey and buy it.
Bee keeping is not for every one it is great that you support your local beekeepers.
This was fascinating! Thanks for sharing it here.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Fantastic info especially about the things to really consider. All very important considerations before going forward. C
Glad it was helpful!
Good job Becca, but no thanks to bees.lol😂
😁 Thanks to the Bees for sure .
Hi Becca, I hope you're OK xx ❣️❣️❣️ Thankyou so much for sharing this video podcast and your vast Bee Keeping knowledge and experience. It was so very interesting and informative . It was interesting to know that you can make cosmetics from the Bees Wax.🪲 Take care and stay safe Lots of love and Big Hugs Jen xxxx ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🐕🫂🫂
Thank you so much for your kind words, Jen! I'm glad you found the podcast interesting. Bees truly are amazing creatures!
@@bybeccalewis Hi Becca, I hope you're OK xx ❣️❣️❣️ You're very welcome xx 🙂🙂 Thankyou so much for the Heart ♥ Sending Heart ♥ back to you ❤️💞 Your Bees and Bees in general do sound amazing creatures. I don't understand why governments are trying to kill them off.🪲 I hope the winter isn't a bad one so that you don't lose any of your Bees. 🪲 Taje care and stay safe my Special Friend Lots of love and Huge Hugs to you both and Cuddles for Millie..Jen xxxx ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🐕🫂🫂
It is fascinating to see what you do, it's very much a foreign world to me. However beekeeping is definitely not for me. What is the time commitment?
I'm glad you enjoyed the video. From Mid march to Mid September its a minimum of 1 inspection a week and i really have to put aside a minimum of 1 afternoon a week over those months.
That was very interesting. I love honey but I’m not sure I would go down the road to purchase them. I can get local honey from my friend in my village. Thank you Becca 🏴
I’m glad you found it interesting! Local honey is such a great choice, and supporting friends is always a win. Enjoy that sweet goodness!
A friend of mine - a really accomplished patchworker - recommends laying out the design pieces and taking a photo in black & white - this gives you an idea of the balance of lights and darks. Ps I was told that the cushion inner should be slightly smaller than the cover - so that you really have to stuff the stuffing in 😂 - makes a good plump cushion.
Such a great tip . Thank you 🙏
On Canva do you pay or are you using the free bits to make that moodboard?
I have the paid version to make mock ups for my stationery business. However I think you can use a mood board for free on Canva .
Beautiful day. Lovely countryside
It really was. Thank you 🙏
The Last Homely House (with Kate) is an excellent inspiration and resource.
thank you for your recommendation.
I appreciate seeing your whole process. So much is curated these days, and it makes people look like grand masters, so when I’m sewing and I sew a folded piece into a seam by accident, it’s more discouraging than funny. It’s nice to know others out there do it too and will share.
Thank you for watching my video and taking the time to leave a comment. I'm too long in the tooth to play silly games. If I make a mistake I'll tell you. 🙏🧵
My partner works for himself (part-time hours) and the plan was that when I retired we’d potter about on little trips which would end up with stopping somewhere to eat and drink (I have a fatal attraction to tea and cake!). When I actually retired, I decided I needed to lose several stones (no doubt engendered in the first place by said fatal attraction!) and that put paid to eating out on any regular basis!! I am knitting a sock as I sit and watch you this afternoon (WYS Yuletide colourway, with Evergreen for contrasting heels and toes).
Thank you for sharing your retirement plans and your knitting project! It’s inspiring to hear how you’re finding balance in your new chapter of life. Enjoy the process!
I am American. If it goes on the bed I say Pillow. If it is on my sofa I call it a cushion. I don't know why.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Well done on your cushion. Not an easy material to work with. As long as you love it that’s all that matters. Thanks for your lovely videos. 🏴
Thank you so much for your kind words! It really means a lot to know that you appreciate the effort I put into my videos.
Keep the slippy fabric for curtain linings.
Brilliant idea .
And it is more satisfying to press the seams (Flat, not open) as you go. You will get a neater finish
Put the flap on the top edge, so the patchwork is sandwiched
I have to admire your persistence in getting it made (even if there's still an edge to be sorted out). I don't think patchworking would be for me.
Thank you for the kind words! Everyone has their own style, and patchworking isn't for everyone!
Freezer paper is great ironed on to the fabric wax side down to stabilise the fabric while you cut out your shapes. Then peel off when ready to sew.
Thank you for your insight! It's always great to hear from fellow crafters. I really appreciate the little tricks that make sewing projects smoother.
Great patchwork design!!! Brilliant! You can make a facing just like facings on a garment. It folds back over the seam and is pressed. Did you change your needle? Sometimes needles will make for tension issues or skipped stitches. Love the tissue paper idea about slippery fabrics!
I really appreciate your thoughtful feedback! The facings and tissue paper tips are fantastic-thank you for sharing your expertise!
Hi Beccles, I hope you're OK xx ❣️❣️❣️❣️ Thankyou so much for sharing this video podcast I've never done Patchwork or Quilting, so don't have any hints or tips to share. Your Cushion looks amazing and so beautiful, especially the richness of the colours against your Sofa.🎉🎉🎉 Hope you are having a Wonderful Week too.🌟🌞✨️ Happy Sewing Fibre Friend 🧵🪡🐑🥰 Take care and stay safe Lots of love, Blessings and Big Hugs to you and Andrew and Cuddles for Millie..Jen xxxx ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏🙏🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🐕🫂🫂

If you place your fold in the middle of the back of the cushion all you seams in the front are taken care of. Just make 2 pieces for the back.😊
Great tip! that is a perfect solution . Thank you .
You did a great job of figuring out the pattern so that you could assemble in rows. The jewel tones are so pretty. Satin is notoriously wriggly when you work with it. If you want to make more things like this you might get some fusible interfacing for the wrong side of the satin. It will stabilize it a lot. That's why people use cottons so much. If you press each seam flat as you go, it will also help to keep things more square. But the satins are so beautiful, and it's going to look so nice on your sofa. You could make a kind of facing for that edge that would be about the width of that first row of piecing. That would stiffen up that edge a bit, too.
Thank you for the tips! I really appreciate your insights on working with satin.
Hi Becca, it looks like you didn't iron the work. That may make a difference in how it looks. And my mother taught me, when I was 10 or 11 or so, to sew very slippery material, or velvet, with some tissue paper pinned between the material. I had to sew a hand fasting dress in velvet some 18 years ago or so and I used tissue paper after I found out how much of a b****r velvet is to sew on a machine. I had 10 days to source the material, make the pattern, create the dress, plus a velvet cloak for the partner, while I was also working in the shop fulltime, so no handsewing options there! The tissue paper saved the day and I bet it will work with slippery material like yours as well! Have fun with it!
Thanks for sharing your story! , I'm definitely going to try the tissue paper trick!
I only skipped through this for now, but it's already what I was hoping for. Thank you for showing that texture/silk can be spun so thin. I feel like I'm constantly seeing these types of batts spun into art style yarn, but thank you for that swatch toward the end and showing off those lovely fingerless gloves. Will come back to this when I can watch all the way through, thank you!
Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm thrilled to hear that the video is meeting your expectations. I hope you enjoy the full content when you get the chance to watch it!
Hi Becca, I just wondered whether you are able to recover any of the wax when you process the honeycombs. (Apologies for asking this so long after you posted your video but I just haven’t been watching UA-cam for most of the summer, so I’m having a massive catch up session!) Best wishes, J
Thank you for your question, I appreciate you taking the time to catch up on my videos. Yes, we do recover wax when processing honeycombs, and I will be making some bees wax videos over the winter.
@@bybeccalewis I’ll look forward to seeing how it is done.
Hi Becca...loved your visit to the beach and the collection of treasures- in particular the laughing mans face in the middle of the dish- is it a shell or a stone? The calendar that you make each year is lovely and I would be quite interested in purchasing one as we have developed a tradition in our home of supporting artists on UA-cam that make calendars- last year was Dani Connor Wild which I hugely recommend too. Sweet Blessings Mand XOXO
Glad you enjoyed it! . Thank you for the channel recommendation.
Hi, lovely video, very informative 😊.
Thank you so much 😊
I did not know what a Mermaid's purse was!
I so glad to have been able to show you a little selection.
