    We are metric here in Australia. I am enjoying your rare breed spin, I have the Ashford Traveller from the mid 80's, I also have an e-spinner as last year I did some damage to my knee and the arthritis in my ankle is a bit of a brake on treading as I need to stop and rest it. If I am doing a large spin I will have to do it on the E-spinner but for the smaller spins my Traveller works beautifully

    I always enjoy your videos and am particularly interested to follow your spin-a-long. I am a new spinner, learning on my own and watching you is helping me. Even though I am not spinning rare breeds, I’m interested to learn and in the meantime, I am practicing on some corriedale. Still producing a very inconsistent yarn, but I know it just takes time and patience, both of which I have these days, lucky me! My goal is to produce yarn that I can us for my weaving as well.

    Hi Becca, your traddie has very similar "special features" to mine! Mine seems to like a lot of oil, or that's what I'm told when she starts clunking. I do think it is rather amazing we can still buy original replacement parts nearly 50 years later! I will admit my traddie is not my go to wheel but she still gets a spin out occasionally. What attracted me to spinning in the first place is the flexibility and versatility you have when you make your own yarn. The huge array of natural fibres out there was also a big attraction and this list only seems to get longer which is still exciting even after years of spinning. Thank you for all your work and a lovely video, all points well made and balanced. Happy spinning, best wishes Jenny

    • @bybeccalewis
      @bybeccalewis День тому

      The big attraction for me of the traddie is that you can just change out the parts . I am putting off the day when I need to change the barring 🤣🤣🤣. There is a bit of travel in the old girl but I'm choosing to live with it . I'm glad you found my opinions balanced . It's easy to get caught up in perfectionism and my channel has always been about having fun with our shared craft. Rather than the notion of creating the "perfect"yarn because that is different for everyone. Thank you for watching and taking the time to leave your thoughts I really appreciate them.

    This was a very good conversation about spinning local wool. Here in the USA we are privileged to have so many farmers with fleece available to local spinners. I don't know what the regs are now for the UK for fleece, but at least used to require the majority of the fleece (if not all) to go to the wool pool. The last time I checked it is ok to import raw fleece to the US, as long as it's well skirted and moderately clean. It would be nice to be able to buy from some of the farmer's there, but I don't know how costly shipping is at the moment. You had me giggling at the advertisement comment. 😅

    • @bybeccalewis
      @bybeccalewis 23 години тому

      My understanding of the rules is that farmers can sell their fleece for crafting or hand spinning. However the only route to the wool auctions is to send them to the wool marketing board Depots for sorting and grading. It's a five year training to become a wool grader so if you buy wool with the British wool mark you know it's been properly sorted and graded. I would be a little nervous of buying raw fleece I hadn't seen just because a lot of farmers are not fibre "nerds" so don't understand what hand spinners are looking for. I will be including some small producers as I progress through the 27 Rare Breeds so I hope to have some recommendations for you. Thank you for watching continuing to support my channel 🙏🧶🐏

    My yarn is soft but my needles are just a wee bit slow - the pattern I'm knitting isn't actually all that complicated but it's just complicated enough that I can get a bit lost at times! The project in question is Kristine Vike's "As you like it" shawl and I'm doing the dragon scale pattern all over. I'm using my ridiculously fine handspun. It's in natural white and I'm wondering if, for the sake of the shawl satisfying my desire for things to be autological, I should have made it in a more dragon-y colour.

    • @bybeccalewis
      @bybeccalewis День тому

      Well only you can answer that conundrum 😊. I've been down a bit of a research rabbit hole recently and before madder was widely available Welsh women wore undyed shawls rather than the scarlet shawls that are depicted in modern ideas of traditional Welsh custom . So by using undyed yarn you are being historically accurate. Sort of 🤣🤣🤣. Have fun and thank you for watching and for continuing to support my quirky channel 🙏🧶🐏

    I’m following you with a spin-a-long during our hot summer months having ordered some rare breed wool from a local supplier prior to December. I’ve also sourced other fleeces from local heritage sheep breeders-- English Leicester, Cheviot, Lincoln, Finn and Gotland. Each breed is quite different, some spun in the grease and others spun washed. I basically do the “ squish test” then decide how the wool wants to spin-- and I’m always happy with the result. Now…. I need to plan what to do with the skeins. From a hot and dry central Victoria, Australia.

    I love the idea of the Ideas jar, I have so many things I want to do I end up doing none of them. I have a 32 inch rigid heddle loom, which I love, and I get about a 29 inch width of fabric. This year I'm going to try to weave enough fabric to make a Chanel style jacket and skirt, I'm also a dress maker. I joined a weaving group and a guild last year and found it too big to take to meetings so I bought a 16 inch Sampleit rigid heddle loom just to take out. I've woven some tea towels and scarves on it, and despite liking to weave big, I do enjoy using it. It's so much quicker and easier to warp! I use a rotary cutter to cut the fringe on my weaving. I'd like to see a Welsh quilt, up here in the North East the traditional quilts are whole cloth, just beautiful.

      Thank you for your lovely message. I'm really looking forward to weaving some fun projects. I have been binge watching weaving videos. I'm also looking forward to making a start on a Welsh quilt. There is also a tradition of whole cloth quilting in Welsh. Whole cloth quilting is much more modern style than the farmhouse wollen quilts from the early 1900s and I wonder if it was influenced by working families moving from all over the UK to work in the coal mines , bringing their quilting traditions with them. I am really looking forward to exploring more about quilting on the channel. Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment 🙏🧶🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🧵

    Loved the idea jar. It gave me a better idea of your interests. The room you're in looking over the garden is very cheerful.

    Hello, This is my first time viewing your channel and my first visit to Wales. I enjoyed the road trip and beach walk. I love charity shops which we call thrift stores, and besides thrifting nearly every day in Wisconsin, US, I also thrift virtually - in Japan, France, England, the US, and now Wales. I'll have a look at your other videos too. Like you, I like the textile arts so will enjoy seeing what you thrift and what you make. Happy to meet you

    I love the variety of content. I have a 16inch Ashford, your comments regarding the 32inch are interesting as I was considering getting a larger loom, maybe not. I like the idea of a jar of intentions, first into my jar would be dusting off my spinning wheel….🤔

      I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I find the jar works for me. I hope you find some time to get your wheel out . 🧶🙏🐏

    Halloo. Visiting family in llanwnda next weekend and none of them are crafty so it’s fab getting your advice for the location. Are there any sea glass beaches, please? I’m in Burnham on sea but we don’t even have shells.

    I love your ideas jar! I'm going to try it for my ND brain. I have so many ideas that never come to fruition as they get lost in the chaos. I have a head full of them and never achieve much. Also please could you point me in the direction of some good weaving videos and advice. I've gone to a couple of courses in the last couple of years and now I've moved house I would love to get a loom and learn.
