You go girl! There is such pleasure in redeeming a first love and hobby. I now have a deep desire to quilt in a conservatory on a rainy day.

Love that! Nothing beats a cozy day crafting while the rain taps on the roof.

Well done! You will only get better. A tip for you, I always use a small piece of fabric folded in two as a thread bunny so you don’t need to worry about making a birds nest of thread under your sewing. That way you don’t need to keep holding your threads as you start sewing your piece. You then snip it off and reuse. A rotary cutter is a must and a mat. I use a fiskar with a handle for my fingers to go through as I feel I have a bit more control. I love your patch on your jeans, it looks amazing! Keep it up I can’t wait to see what you do next ❤. PS if you haven’t already discovered her, Kate at The Last Homely House has loads of tips for quilting. Happy sewing!

I love the colours of your patch and including the text is great, and no waste. A rotary cutter mat and ruler will help you no end. When you are making more than one block you can sew from one block straight to the next (chain piecing) You won’t have lots of threads to cut and saves on thread. 😊Kate from the last homely house has some great videos and tips.

    Looks great on the jeans.
I did a hand quilting course many years ago and we marked out our fabric with a sharp lead pencil. The stop the fabric slipping we had a thin board with sand paper stuck to it. This kept everything nice a precis.

Hi Becca you may need a rotary cutter to keep the shapes the same length and width which will be easier for you in the long run. Also a cutting mat which has measurements on it and it makes it much easier for you. Once you have those then Bob is your uncle (meaning you will be good go (to carry on).

I like having projects like this. I sew for a while, and come back later and sew more. When you get a rotary cutter you have to have a cutting mat and a ruler designed for a cutter. Often you can find combo sets online and it saves a little money. (Don't go too small on the mat and ruler size.) You don't have to get the very high end products. Later if you find you are sewing a lot you can decide if you need something different. You can stack fabrics and cut 2 to 3 at a time. It certainly makes it easier to sew nice seams. I think you'll love it.

Well done. You will find doing patchwork and quilting very addictive. You will find using a rotary cutter and board so helpful. Your patchwork pieces will be more accurate and you it is so much quicker. I also sew in my conservatory.

I think you are right about how addictive it is. I am desperate to try some more. I am going to wait until my new "toys" arrive in the post. . Thank you for watching and taking the time to leave a comment 🙏🧵

Becca that rain coming down was very soothing! Loved seeing your quilt. Fantastic! Many say to cut off and not use the selvages as they are thicker.

I look forward to seeing the next steps in your quilting journey. Curtains sounds like a large enough project to justify that rotary cutter.

Loved seeing your block making Beth. My hand made scrap blankets are more basic than yours..just 5x5 inch squares of cotton fabrics joined together to make a quilt, but I loved them and sewed the whole thing by hand. Took ages, but very relaxing. Like you I just used a chalk and scissors.❤😊

Your scrap blanket sound wonderful I would not have the patience to hand stitch but I can see the why you would do it. I am really looking forward to sharing my next quilting video. Thank you for watching and taking the time to leave a comment.

Hi, I’m just retired as well and like you used to sew a great deal when I was young but then got too busy so let it slide. I did make an attempt to keep going but that didn’t quite work out so I’m now left with more unfinished projects than I can count!!! my goal is to finish them before I am not able to……. So really looking forward to watching your sewing journey as well 😊

It's wonderful to hear from someone who shares a similar journey! Finishing those projects sounds like a great goal, and I'm excited to have you along for the ride as I tackle my own sewing adventures!

I'm pretty sure I got my rotary cutter in The Range, had no issues. I'd advise ordering new blades in packs of 10 from Amazon tho - otherwise you can pay £££ for single ones. when they get worn out save them and use for paper cutting for handmade books or scrapbooking etc. also - rotary cutter blades are SUPER sharp on the edges :)

I really appreciate your advice, especially your tips on buying blades in bulk and reusing them, as I am a junk journaler.

I suspect seeing your garden and how you are getting back into sewing that you may like 'The Last Homely House' also here on youtube. Kate also has a fabulous garden and is retired and spending her time quilting, sewing and crafting.
Also for rotary cutters, any by Fiskars or Olfa will be good, 45mm is the most common size used for quilting and cutting out dressmaking patterns.

I love both Kates Channels she is one of the people who gave me the confidence to show my face on You tube as an older lady who doesn't wear much make up and is going grey. Thank you for the rotary cutter recommendation.

Craft (tool) supplies are very expensive here, plus we don’t have very many shops as we used to. Postage is also VERY expensive (plus extra for rural delivery which I am on!).
I got a “cheapie” rotary cutter and am now finding it very annoying as the nut holding the blade works loose 🤦‍♀️
You get what you pay for I’ve learned.
I did invest in a cutting board and ruler. (They’re called self-healing cutting mats).
Becca, do you have a sewing machine service company in your area/town/location? I had a wonderful man whom I bought my machines off and who used to service them, but sadly he’s moved to Australia.
I have a Janome sewing machine and also an over locker [which I adore!].
    Keep up the good work!!

I can relate its a 2 hour round trip to the nearest quilting shop and I have been caught out buying cheap online sooo many times . i think I might get a cutter mat and ruler from Kate at The last Homely House. We have a great iron monger just across the bay in Fishguard and they offer sewing machine servicing. Although what I do when he retires I'm not sure.

I have been quilting for 13yrs, my advice is that Olfa rotary cutters are best, so are their cutting boards, don't buy cheap, you will regret it, like I did. I use the cheap one now with used blades for cutting wrapping paper etc. I envy you your conservatory, having had one in the early years of sewing, I miss the wonderful natural light, good luck with your projects.
