Best way to learn CW...! DE NN2X....
Subscribed. I bought an ic-705 as my first (and only) transceiver with the thought the idea that i would go portable (POTA). Im coming up on my one year ham-versary. I never ended up going portable and stayed at home keeping busy with SKCC stuff. Just got a buddihex a minth ago and took it down due to the harsh buffalo ny winters. Currently i have a zs6bkw up 50' and a 10m dipole because the zs6 not so good on upper bands. I considered a magnetic loop (the chameleon one) to get me through the winter. What do you use at home? How does the alex loop compare? Thanks, i enjoyed watching your video relaxing with my pipe and manhattan, wood stove in garage.
Pipe and manhattan with a wood stove in a garage sounds like a great relaxing time. Very nice on the 705, if I had to choose just one radio to own, it would definitely be the 705. Mag loops my favorite portable antenna. At home I use a Hustler 4BTV for 40-20-15-10 and a 60 something foot random wire for the WARC bands. The alex loop when set up outside, I’d say the bigger antenna will beat it on 40 by a lot, a little on 30. On 20-10, a 3’ diameter magloop really isn’t much of a compromise. It’s pretty darn efficient. Also the noise floor on them is nearly non existent so weak signals just pop out of no where. It’ll work indoors too, and you’ll make contacts, but certainly better set up outside. The tradeoff with a mag loop is you do have to retune them when moving even a few khz. But once you get used to it, it’s a piece of cake. If you look up VK5KLT’s write ups on mag loops, they’re very enlightening. Long answer but hope that helps. 73.
@w4arb awesome info thanks much.
The S meter on my Yaesu is very stingy. It shows a 5 or 6 when it’s a 9. And it shows a 2 or 3 when it’s a 5 or 6.. so I always have to add a couple. :). My SDRuno is spot on.
I think (you’d have to check me on this) that Yaesu’s S-meters are only accurate when the preamp is on (AKA “IPO” is turned off). Which sucks because a lot of times, the preamp needs to be off or the noise floor is too high. But either way, agreed S-meters and how readable someone is are often quite different. 73
Nice ... but will it work from a 2nd floor balcony?
Technically it would if it had a good ground/radials under it. like a metal railing might work
Great video Aaron, CW POTA is awesome. 73 Paul KE9BHN
Thanks Paul. Yes it is! 73 my friend
Thanks for the reply Aaron.Great job on your videos.
Does the tripod come with the Alex Loop?
It doesn’t, but it’s cheap. It’s a Vivitar VPT-1250. It’s discontinued but still easy to find for +/- $15 online. The camera mount comes off, and the alex loop slides over the post perfectly.
Thanks again Aaron. When you find another backpack for the Alex Loop please let us know. tnx es 72
Sure will! I have one from 5.11 Tactical on the way right now that should fit it, if the measurements on their website is accurate. I’ll certainly share if it works out.

Aaron, Tnx fer another great video. I can’t believe how fast you tune up that loop. What’s your secret? 😊
Hah! The Alex Loop has really nice reduction gearing. I give all credit to Alex’s design 😅
You and Thomas and Forrest are so much fun to watch. I love that key really want one! I was at his website yesterday checking out his keys!

Thank you for the contact!
Hello Aaron. Could you tell us in another video, the format that you use in your transmissions for POTA?
I like this idea! I’ll try to do that. Thanks!
2nd in the line up! Thanks, Aaron. 73 de K4FR
Heck yeah! Always good to get you in the log
Aaron: You may want to mention to CW operators who are hoping to activate POTA parks to pay attention to the pattern that is used in every contact exchange. I think if they recognize that, it will make it less intimidating for them to venture out the first few times. Lee
That is a great idea, thank you!
Thanks aaron fer sharin - 73 dit dit ps G106?? lol

Well Aaron once again I missed you on this one too! it seems my friend Pete. Every time he changes the color that’s one production run. You always order a new color why I don’t know, but it works.. scott
Good to know! Cool way to identify revisions
I have a new version. I had similar issues with audio the first use. I've made some adjustments to some settings and it seems much better now, but not perfect. I used headphones 100% of the time. There are a few 3d printed stands for this radio available on thingiverse or printables. Agreed that it's not a polished CW rig like a elecraft. Still a neat little radio. I've heard the F5BUD firmware fixes some issues and adds features like memory keying.
Hm, I’ll check that FW out. Maybe these issues are settings related, I haven’t spend enough time with it to figure it out. It’s a really fun radio though, he fit a lot into a tiny package. 73!
Nice Activation! as far as a stand for the radio, I have a RAM mount setup for mine. I have the RAM 'claw' that can bite the picnic table or a lawn char arm, then a ball plate to the radio and battery. I have a slightly larger batter that is zip tied to the radio. works good. The setup also can grab my car's brake lever or shifter (in park of course!)
The ram mount is a good idea!! Hadn’t thought about that. 73!
I like the xt60 power cords, although lots of people run the Anderson power poles.
XT60 is a nice connector. I’m just used to power poles haha
@w4arb my son and nephew are into r.c. cars and model planes all have xt60's in them so I've became used to them for a while
Sup dude. Diggin the radio. Tip on the wire. Twist it together and use some zip ties, or some split-loom.
That’s a good idea. i’m probably gonna just make a new one that’s about 24” long, where the pair are attached to each other.
Nice! Looks great in Blue. What battery pack is that?
it’s one of the Windcamp internal battery replacements for the FT-817/818. i had an extra one and put powerpoles on it for using with other stuff
thanks Aaron73 dit dit
thanks for watching, my friend! 73
That's my dream radio. If I can get one used, I'll hop on it.
they pop up on qrz from time to time! it’s a neat rig
loud on that radio today thanks
Tnx for the contact! Always good to hear you
@@w4arb 33 so far
Aaron idk if your experience is similar to mine but I do notice a difference between 5 watts and 10 watts. (Think icom 705 or KX2). I really like that this rig is all band and does 10 watts CW. I’ve had a great time with my FX-4CR thus far. 10 watts at that price, at that size, is unique. I did order an electronic keyer kit from hamgadgets to go with this rig. 73 de KI7QCF
It is a fun little radio. It feels like it could be really darn good with just a few tweaks. But still cool. Honestly, I haven’t run 10W enough to notice. I normally run either 5, 50, or 100 haha. Not too much in between 😅
Those little radios are pretty slick. I have the Xiegu 5105 and the audio itself distorts. It sounds a lot like that radio (maybe worse). It sounds just as bad through headphones/external speaker, so it's in the audio chain. I'm tempted to open it up and see if I can add a cap to knock down the high frequencies. I put a piece of tape over the speaker and that helped muffle it, but then I had to turn up the volume and it can distort. It's workable, but gets tiring. No idea if it would help, but maybe that giant power cable is getting some RF into it. Try twisting the wires and see if you still get that audio volume oscillation.
It reminds me of a mini g90 without a tuner. The audio isn’t great, but still a fun radio! Thanks for the thought on the power cable. I’m going to try making a new short one
Very cool Aaron. Thanks for sharing your experience. 🤝
Thanks for watching!
It looks very close to the Xiegu 6100 or G 90. Best wishes de N2VQD!
I’ve owned both of those in the past as well 😅 It very much reminds me of a smaller G90 without the tuner. 73!
New to ham, and learning the code now to be able to activate some of the local parks on the CW mode. But am curious as to what do you do in regards to you logging? Do you log each qso at the time using your phone or after getting home do you log them and then upload the adrift file to the website? Thinking of using one of the scaled back logging apps for just my POTA activations when I get to that point to make it easier to upload quickly.
Welcome to the hobby and excellent on learning CW! It’s very rewarding and fun. For logging, I log on paper while I’m activating. Once I get home, I type the log into a program called “Fast Log Entry” by DF3CB because it’s super fast for data entry. I then export the log file and upload it to QRZ, LOTW, and POTA. That’s just the way I like to do it. There are also several good portable logging apps like Ham2K Portable Logger and HamRS that are good for logging while activating. I’ve tried many ways and landed on the way I do it now, it’s just a matter of personal preference. 73!
Do you have a final verdict yet on the ATU-10 Aaron? I’m looking for a tuner for my two qrp rigs for the odd time that I do not use resonant antennas. Ian VE3LYT
It works great. I don’t have any complaints with it after using it many times. There are a lot of random sellers of it, I would recommend buying it from this one, i bought it from them after Joshua N5FY (he sells things under the name Tufteln if you’ve heard of them) recommended it. 73! newdiytech.com/products/atu-10-atu10-qrp-by-n7ddc-atu-10-the-tyny-qrp-automatic-antenna-tuner
@@w4arb Yes I read Joshua’s updated review of it. I ended up ordering it from that recommended seller and at a posted sale price which made the decision even a little easier. 73.
Very good! Hope you enjoy it. 73
Thanks for the video. That's a nice set-up. I would love to set my rig up here in Cambodia, but the fees are very expensive lol. We plan to use Ham as one of our programs to teach tech in public schools. Kindest Regards, Dan AB3RQ
Very nice! That sounds like a great teaching tool. Thanks for watching & 73!

Okay, that tuning might be worth the price jump from the older model.
I think it is :)
Great video. You got my buddy Mike K4NYX as your first contact. Cheers. W3GTR
Always enjoy your videos Aaron. It truly is amazing what can be used/tuned for an antenna. I run my G 90 from home with an indoor (attic) short G5RV with counterpose wires. Its 1:1 flat on most of the bands and nothing crazy on the others except 160. 73 de N2VQD
No doubt! It’s amazing what works when you just give it a try. 73!
