      It’s roughly the Long Island CW Club (LICW) protocol- here’s a link to a PDF of it: longislandcwclub.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/LICW-QSO-Protocol.pdf Good starting point for a rag chew, and of course can be adapted as desired :)

      @@w4arb Aaron, yes I know LCWO and spent 30 min there in the morning and 30 min there in the evening trying to up my ICR....and work on words; so far 3 letter words. I've been a licensed Ham for a long time, but languished in VHF/UHF until I heard Charlie in AZ? (might be NM) communicating with a guy in Canada. Yep, cw, and Charlie was using a little itty bitty radio. That fascinated me, enough to begin studying for General and a deep deep dive into Morse. My goal is to become fluent in it....but at 70 I might be dead before fluency haha!

    • @w4arb
      @w4arb 4 дні тому

      That’s awesome to hear! I fully believe you can become fluent in it. It takes practice, but you’ll be surprised once you learn a little and get on the air, it’ll get easier quickly. There’s something about using it real-world that makes learning speed up. Jump on and make contacts as soon as you can copy your own call! Hah. I’ve never met a CW op that minds mistakes or slow speed. We are just happy to have contacts. Hope to hear you on the air!

      @@w4arb Too kind. Well my first step will be VBand when the USB interface gets here....then hopefully in February I'll pass the General. BUT I just noticed that 6 meters is open to CW and Technician license. So I have been studying 6 meter antennas. Funny, there is a Yeasu 710 Field sitting here, a Xiegy x5105, and an FX-4CR en route and I've never transmitted on HF. I must have high hopes to pass the exam haha!

    Still like the ATU-10 after a year? Also, one thing I'd love in your vids is the scrolling ticker tape (maybe at the top) of the CW exchange. A lot of us are learning CW, learning the POTA/SOTA 'exchange'; being able to see what you are sending and receiving CW wise would be a big help. There is a guy names Charlie in AZ (maybe NM maybe) that does the ticker tape. Anyway, enjoying your vids very much and enjoy watching the deployment of the kit. W6RYM 73 to you.

    • @w4arb
      @w4arb 4 дні тому

      I do! It’s a great QRP tuner, especially for the price. I believe you’re talking about Charlie with the Red Summit RF channel. I love when channels do that CW on-screen too. While I just can’t spend the time to do it for every video/QSO, I am planning to start showing my log/text of what I’m writing/typing down. Should have a good example video of that coming this weekend. 73 & thank you for the kind words!

    Hi my friend, Im ur subscriber, greets from Russia! One question to u: Im 42, today directly 6 months of my cw learning from scratch. Every f***ng day! I made small vocabulary with 100 common cw qso phrases. And reached 30 wpm speed without writting down (head in copy). Without mistakes! Great! But now I tried to copy paste random text from wikipedia into my emulator program and I was shocked! Only 15 wpm I understand everything. Faster - I cant! 😭 6 months of every day hard trainings and such a chicken results! Do u think I make smth wrong? Or its normal result for 6 months? ... I want to speak morse open text, as I talk with my friends via telephone... I dont like limited base like CQ 73 GA FB RST GL. What do u think? Tnx in anvance.

      That’s very impressive progress in 6 months! I have been operating CW nearly daily for almost 3 years and I can do 30 WPM for simple contest exchanges. Copying random text is much more difficult. I can only do about 18-20 WPM with random text. I find that as you practice, your vocabulary of words you instantly recognize expands. In my opinion, you’re learning very quickly. Quicker than I have. Thanks for watching and hope to catch you on the air one day! 73 my friend

      Congrats on starting your CW journey! It’s a lot of fun. I would say tips depends on how you like to learn. If you enjoy learning in a group/class, Long Island CW Club has some great classes. If you (like me) like learning by doing, I used the Morse Mania app to learn the sound of the letters and then started chasing Parks on the Air activators on the air to practice. Getting on the air as soon as you can is the best teacher! Don’t be afraid to mess up. We all have been there and we all mess up still. Most of all enjoy it! 73

    Workman makes the same exact jaw mount clamp that Chameleon sells, but for half the price or less. I imagine they have the same style you're using as well. If anyone's looking for one: Workman QRCS3. I was looking at those 25' whips but someone talked me into a mag loop instead ;)

      @w4arb 26 днів тому

      Yeah! I was thinking of the Workman one but couldn’t remember the name of it. Thanks for sharing! This whip is cool and fun to have as an option, but Mag Loops are my fav and will get more use. You just can’t beat the setup time! I’ve been working a good bit of 10m DX with my Alex Loop the last few weeks too. 73!

      @@w4arb I had some sudden onset high SWR issues with mine. I just resoldered the shield connection to the BNC. I hope that fixes it. If it doesn't, I'll go with a new connector. I really like the strain relief one he uses, though. I have a lot of miles on my 17' whip. My only beef is it's a hair short for 20m. MFJ, I think. I just need an alligator clip with a few inches of wire and call it a day. If the rain permits I may do some Straight Key Night ("Night") POTA activating tomorrow. May not call POTA, just SKN and try for 10.

    • @w4arb

      Interesting, I had an issue with mine where the center pin of the BNC connector broke off. I cut off the whole connector and soldered on a new one, and haven’t had any more issues since. I figured it was just a fluke. Sounds like a fun activation, hope the weather cooperates for you!

    Always fun to work close range, I'm about 90 miles away. I run an elevated vertical almost exclusively.. either the SS17 or a wire vertical with a single elevated radial. The results you got are pretty common if anyone is on the band. I made a video a while back where I had a streak of 28 contacts in a row without calling CQ, talk about a fun day. Good luck and thanks for the video.

      That’s awesome! Elevated verticals always perform really good. I still use the Alex Loop more than anything else though. It performs good enough and takes 3 mins to set up. But a full size elevated vertical always brings the pileups!! Great to hear you, surprised I could while using the vertical! 73

    Aaron, some feedback on your question about showing set-ups vs the activation contacts in your videos… I enjoy a mix of both. I’ve watched some of your longer activations and like to copy along and imagine the QSO map growing as you go along. I listen to the different fists. Good CW practice. However, in videos like this one I get ideas for my own POTA and portable set-ups. After we exchanged emails about the IC-705 I finally bought mine a while back. I’ve used it several times with my POTA20 mast and KM4ACK EFHW. So, I hope you keep your videos balanced between set-ups and the CW contacts. Like you said, the chapters give us an easy way to choose which pieces we’re interested in watching, so it’s a win-win. BTW, I’m gonna give your inverted vee set-up a try, but use just a random wire with an old MANUAL tuner and see how that works. I’m also a 30m and 17m operator and enjoy both POTA and a nice CW ragchew, sometimes both from the same park. Hope to run into you soon, now that the 2024 Christmas/New Year busyness is almost gone and the Florida WX is great for outdoor radio fun. 72, Paul - N4FTD
