Give this posterior chain workout a try, you won't regret it. Hammering my glutes and hamstrings.
I put 70 lbs on my deadlift last year after recovering from lumbar fusion. This year I plan on pushing it even further, on my way to a 500 lb deadlift before 50. The goal is to hit a 500 lb deadlift below 190 lbs of bodyweight.
Right now I'm working hard to build work capacity and strength/ endurance in my lower back, glutes and hamstrings. Give this workout a try and let me know what you think.
The full workout with sets and reps is posted at the end of the video.

    I’m looking at a cable machine addition to the basement gym. You seem to have a great selection of machines. Would you suggest a BOS single stack tower, their all in one machine or any functional trainer off kijiji. I have space, but prioritizing efficient use of space is important.

    • @buildingdadbod2.0
      @buildingdadbod2.0 3 дні тому

      A couple things to consider. Most straight up functional trainers are a 2:1 ratio. My brother has an inspire with 150lb stacks, but all you feel is 75lbs resistance. I have 2 esport fitness towers and really like them. There are 2 cables on each tower like the BellsofSteel. That gives you the option of 2:1 or you can lock the cables and do 1:1. Sobi can have either 210lbs or 105lbs. I would not buy a tower that is only 2:1. Plate loaded is much cheaper, but if you can afford weight stacks, they are so much more convenient. My esport stacks are not modular to add attachments, the BellsofSteel towers are. I think they'll come out with a lat pulldown seat and attachment as well at some point. Mine has a footplate and is fine for doing low rows. Ultimately for me I would go with 2 towers again. I spaced them apart so I can attach a bar attachment in between to use both towers and so I can do crossovers as well. I am waiting on pieces to fabricate a seat and hold down for mine. Hopefully that's helpful.

      Is it just over the last 4 years that you've lost more flexion than the original flexion lost due to fusion? Do you work out at home or at a gym? What do you currently do for posterior chain work? Is the inability to do a full bridge due to pain? Or do you feel it is just because your glutes have weakened? I'm sorry to hear that over the last 4 years you've started to have troubles. I'm working hard now to mitigate future issues, and i am just coming up on 4 years. But I always wonder if there's a point with the fusion where it starts to give issues.

    I just started doing these today with neutral grip pull ups instead of regular pull-ups. I can get 16 clean bdwt reps, but I have been stuck on 15-16 literally for years. I am starting to think that my age (I am 56) may limit further improvement. Anyway, today was my first McGill workout. I did one double and four singles. I have decided to use a 50-lb back-pack for these workouts and test myself (with bdwt) in 6 weeks. I am hoping that the combination of doing McGill workouts AND suddenly stripping off 50 pounds will make bdwt neutral grip pull ups seem very light. I will let you know what happens. I am very impressed by your improvement!! To go from 10 to 16 is absolutely incredible.

    • @buildingdadbod2.0
      @buildingdadbod2.0 11 днів тому

      McGill Pull-ups were definitely a game changer for me. Once I hit 16 bodyweight reps, I went to weighted McGills and went to 18 bodyweight reps very quickly. I hurt my forearm in February doing 75lb weighted McGills which has set me back. I'm able to do neutral grip now, so I'm building back up. My younger brother was able to get up to 23 bodyweight pull-ups using weighted McGills. Last night he did 6 sets of 83lb weighted McGills and then finished the workout with 19 bodyweight reps. I think you were very smart to decide to go with 50lb weighted McGills. I don't think your age will be a limiting factor at all, pull-ups are just very hard to build up when you are only doing bodyweight for reps. You'll find after a few weeks of weighted McGills your first handful of reps will feel effortless, you'll feel more explosive than ever. Both my brother and I recommend after you get to 6 sets of 2 and they are feeling good, up the weight by 5 lbs and carry on like that. I hope the McGills push you over the top, starting at 16 reps is very impressive. I would love to hear how it goes for you.

      @@buildingdadbod2.0 I will certainly keep you informed. Given your progress, I am very excited to start this program. A couple of questions: When you say that your brother did six sets with 83 pounds, were those sets all doubles? Also, how long do you generally rest between sets? I was taking up to a minute today, just to ensure I could keep my form clean. Is a minute too long?

    • @buildingdadbod2.0
      @buildingdadbod2.0 11 днів тому

      Yeah, both my brother and I have always done all sets as doubles. Bodyweight I would increase the sets every session. Weighted we always keep the sets at 6 and increase the weight as we are able. I could see at some point leaving the weight the same and increasing the number of sets. As far as rest time goes, when I was doing bodyweight, I was down to about 15 seconds between sets. Right now, I am doing weighted neutral grip pulls at 53lbs. I generally rest probably 90 seconds to 2 minutes. The biggest thing is exactly what you said, maintain the quality of reps. The reps will be slower than Bodyweight, but you want to maintain the "intent of speed" on all reps. My advice is rest as long as you need to be as explosive as possible on each set. I'm just visiting my brother right now and he said something interesting to me. He said he doesn't care if he actually gets a full rep when he goes super heavy, he just hits his 2 reps as explosively as possible. I was watching and he was probably just getting his nose to the bar on the pull-ups, but the weight was moving well. Then he was able to knock out 19 strict full ROM deadhang pull-ups. I may start using this same mentality, right now I make sure my chin is over the bar on every rep.

      @@buildingdadbod2.0 I just wanted to give you an update. I did my second McGill workout today with neutral-grip. I did six doubles with a 55-lb weight vest. It felt very good. I focused on explosiveness and getting a fair amount of height. I am going to take your advice: I will put on 60 pounds this coming Sunday and go for six doubles again. Once again, I am really hoping to get 20 bdwt neutral-grip chin ups by October.

      Awesome man, thank you for the update. I'm glad it's feeling really good, I hope you smash 20+ pull-ups in October!!!. The way your doing it will definitely get you results. You're experienced with pull-ups, but all I will say from my own experience is thus, as the weights go up and you are being very explosive just make sure you initiate every pull with your back. In February I lost focus on 1 rep doing 75lb McGills and I damaged a tendon in my left arm. I'm just starting to be able to do pronated grip again now. I can't wait to here your final results. 🤜🤛

    I agree. Dips are great if you respect the movement. A while ago I started going for heavy dips solely because I could. But my sternum wasn’t adapted to the movement yet so it caused me sternum and shoulder pain so I blamed dips altogether. Recently I started incorporating dips again, but bodyweight only and I’m gonna slowly progress them over time so my body has a chance to adapt. Then hopefully I’ll be back to doing heavy dips pain free. Great video Sean 💪🏻
