Canopy 2nd attempt
Переглядів 2,2 тис.11 місяців тому
2nd attempt at forming a canopy for my RC airplane, the 3d Mini. The results were better but I made a mistake. I did not adequately wedge the mold inside the bottle causing it to move early on in the shrinking process. I did end up with a usable canopy but it is not show room quality. I feel like showing these mistakes teaches more that a perfect performance. Enjoy

How well does the paint adhere to the laminating film? Will it flake off ?
It does quite well but if too heavy, it will eventually sag
Do you have a brand name? WE tried Pelon 830 from Joanne Fabrics. Went on nice but was more brittle than old silkspan.
This is simply from hobby lobby. I'm going to do more trials and research because it seems to sag
@@DollarRC Okay. The stuff we used didn't sag, it had other issues. I've heard about polyester dress lining being used for decades but no one has given me a sample and the only lead I had was Pelon 830 and that turned out to be unsuitable
Hahaha. Look at the YT algorithm. Yesterday, I had a day dream about reliving my childhood by modeling the parts to a Gentle Lady glider. Then all of the sudden I'm being Recommended this video. I guess it's time to get started. Time to order some PLA-Aero. Thanks for pushing me over the edge. :-)
Be warned. I'm working on a vid for follow up. A balsa rib is .035 oz while these are .075. I dig the accuracy and not having to cut ribs though
you can save so much time with onshape doing that shape via sketch and get nozzle width dimensions for faster better printing.
I'll need to look into this. I've not heard of onshape.
@@DollarRC It is awesome. Browser based professional free cad, no install and even your phone can make updates and changes, saves your steps in event of a crash so no 'save' needed.
@@DollarRC the people that created Solidworks started over and created Onshape. A full CAD software taking advantage of cloud based workflow. All work is done in the browser, but it feels like working in a normal software run locally. It is free for personal, non-commercial use. Its awesome!
What paint do you use is it a cellulose or an acrylic?
It is kylin rattle can paint.
Wow amazing. I thought they were all vac formed. Never knew it shrunk with heat applied.
More great information!
We start 3d printing next week. Stay tuned.
Thank-you so much! Could you tell us how can I do for squared corners to keep the longarin size?
You can hold the control key when you drag the size handles and it will stay on that axis.
Cool build!
Wings length and breath
36 inch wingspan. I'll measure length. What is Breath?
What size and where did you get the blind nuts? Thanks
4-40. I have a stash. If I ever make a hobby shop I buy all they have. You can purchase at Amazon.
Well, now you're into it three dollars!
Truly appreciate you including your 'failures'/sub-par product...many get too embarrassed to reveal such informative process mistakes. It ends up that YT 'How-To' vids too often make DIY projects appear perfection is guaranteed = NOT in this REAL world! You are patient & detail oriented and will have this process down to art before long. As far as the staining or residual adhesive spots across the canopy, did you bother soaking that PETN canopy in different solvents after the 'Goo Gone'--like acetone & alcohol? Finally, a drill or Dremel fit with a poly-cotton buffing rag wheel + polishing compound...gentle work-over might restore clarity & help disappear surface scratches from the finished canopy plastic?
I have to admit I did not think of that. That is worth a try to brighten it up some. Thank you very much.
Nice

More great Inkscape content! I learn more from each of your videos.
I’ve been wanting to get this kit for a while now, but haven’t pulled the trigger on it because the website says it’s backordered and projected ship date is 11/17/21. When did you order the kit, and how long did it take them to ship it?
Took about 6 weeks. Have to be patient because it is a mom and pop shop.
I wound up ordering a skytiger today. I’m looking forward to getting it.
After building the frame I discovered a plywood laser cut part that is intended to be the back of F1 and the landing gear. I used a piece of scrap balsa but the ply is the intended piece with wire for motor wires.
trash bag music tune it off
Nicely done. 👍 I've not done what you're doing, but am a sculptor and have mucked about with various materials and DIY forming ideas over more decades that I'd admit to, so take my suggestions as coffee shop engineering chit chat. Just random thoughts.... I wonder if you cut the bottom of the bottle off, stuck your buck in, epoxied the bottom back on. Then heat the bottle in an oven to get it evenly soft (Not sure of the right temp for that plastic, might have to experiment to find the Goldilocks zone). Rig up a cone shaped bung to stick in the top of the bottle and fit on a shopvac hose. Heat the bottle, plug in the fitting, and turn on the vac. Sort of a vac forming but without the flat sheet and machine. And a second shot in the dark; Put a tire valve stem in a bottle cap, warm the bottle as above, and use compressed air (compressor or bike tire pump) and blow the bottle up. The idea is it would thin the plastic out. You could then use a smaller bottle to start with, having thinner wall thickness and use the above method. might suck down easier and form more tightly to the buck. Like I said, just random ideas. I saw you're vid on the side bar while cruising kit/junk bashing videos. Good luck with the build.
Thank you for the suggestions. I'll see if I can replicate some of that and capture it if possible.
Can you please share a link of the doculam you purchased from Amazon ?

Can you point me to a link so I can purchase some doculam ? Thank you
Servos look a little large for this size of plane. Nice recovery though.
What size should I use. I may need to order some.
@@DollarRCThey say to use 3.7 to 5 gram servos. If you get cheap ones, you better buy a couple of extras. What kind did you use?
@@txkflier blue ones are gh-s37d from amazon. Says they are 3.7 gram. www.amazon.com/YoungRC-Aeromodelling-Aircraft-Direction-Helicopter/dp/B082SM99HL. You are right, the blue ones break easy. The black one is similar size but just says micro.
@@DollarRCHmmm. Yeah, those are the ones I saw. I've used some Emax servos, but they're more expensive.
Note: Don't use an ink pen to mark things. It'll bleed thru iron-on covering. I'd use 30-minute epoxy on the nose gear block/firewall and the rear wing hold down plate.
Good point.
Willy nillies has awesome products..thanks for the tutorial.
Duh moment. I went back and read the booklet that came with this kit, and it does in fact indicate that this is a beta kit and there are no instructions developed for this yet as does the website. I do appologize. However, I will state that this kit is pretty awesome and came with amazing hardware and enough extra materials to make a go of it. The Dummy motor is sold separate but I do recommend as it really pulls this together.
you can get a similar effect by dunking it in boiling water as well! it'll cause the plastic used in the bottle to shrink uniformly!
Nice canopy.. plane is looking good...
Thank you very much!
Great information! I learn something new from each of your Inkscape videos.
Thank you. Should I continue this series? Anything you would like to see?

I put videos on my channel for the thermoforming unit under a Playlist
Awesome. Do you want to put your link here?
I have a 24 x 24 vacuum system if you need anything big, just let me know..
Can you send me a picture of it. I really want to build one.
Can do, I used to sell thermoforming equipment and do maintenance on them. Mine is heavy and bulky but works great. I used less expensive particle board 5/8" thick but made it so you can take it apart. Used aluminum L channel to make film holder. Used two smoker heater elements, adjustable temperature, for heater box. My canopy have come out great. The plug is the key it has to be very smooth otherwise the plastic will show all defects.
Not sure how to send you pictures, any idea how?
I put videos of my thermoforming unit on my channel and under a Playlist...
The wire you are using, is soft wire, it might work for a light model, but heavier control input I will recommend steel spring wire or tempered piano wire. Grainger industrial if you have in your city will sell rolls for like 10$ all different sizes. I have even tried heat treating and quenching the wire you have to no improvement,it does not have enough carbon to get hard. I also unwound a small spring and straightened that works if you are patient because the wire is already hardened, thatis what gives it its spring !
Thank you for this.
Nice method I'll have to try it out !
Found this in my recomended, i have no idea what this is. Can someone explain?
Apologies, it was tagged for Rc model airplanes and inkscape.
Great tutorial. I learned some tricks I didn't know before.
Thank you. I was very nervous about releasing this series as it is drastically different from my other content. Please stay tuned. I have more to come!
With all that paint, isn’t it cheaper to use covering film for models?
I'm looking at alternatives to the covering films. I do have films that I have hoarded but use only on the best projects.
Where do you buy doculam??
I purchased mine from Amazon.com. You may also try an office supply store. I do not recommend the packets that you find at walmart. It should be in a roll.
@@DollarRC -- What thickness did you use in your build?
I used something like this in 1968 on my control line airplanes.
I talked with a guy once who flew the combat RC or Control line planes and he told me something similar. He said that they also used to buy self adhesive shelf liner paper and cover thier planes in that for a quick cheap cover.
😮😮
Thank you for your support.
How many grams per sq meter or how many oz per sg yard is this doculam?
I will need to research this. I knew it would eventually come up, but I must admit I am unprepared for this question. I know that compared to traditional Monokote, after 3 coats of paint, the 1.5 mil document laminating film is significantly lighter. I will purchase a postage scale and do some comparisons for an upcoming video. Thank you for your comment and support. I will do some follow-up.
I want to give doculam a try. What thickness should I order?
1.5 millimeter is what I am using. Here is a link on Amazon. They have gone up in price since I bought my 2 rolls 3 years ago, however it is practically a lifetime supply. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0017TGQG0/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1 www.amazon.com/GBC-HeatSeal-Laminating-Thickness-3000002/dp/B000H148LY/ref=sr_1_10?crid=EU02MSFHENSO&keywords=1.5+mil+thermal+laminating+film&qid=1703022692&s=office-products&sprefix=1.5+mil+thermal+laminating+film%2Coffice-products%2C91&sr=1-10
