I worked for the Patriot News in Harrisburg, PA. When it came across the wire that Buddy was fired by Norman Braindead I went in the bathroom and cried for a long time. He really got cheated in the fog bowl. The NFL rule book states if you can’t see goalpost to goalpost the game can’t be played.

Buddy Ryan was a Great Defensive Mind! And Coordinator! HC? I'll Let his record speak to that! But I believe Papa Halas hiring Mike Ditka and the animosity between Ditka & Ryan showed especially during practices Offense vs Defense! That come Sunday's Game both side looked at the game as a day off after spending the week scrimmaging against the two best lines in the NFL! Sadly hiring Ditka cost the Chicago Bears the Best GM in the NFL or AFL! They rode his fumes until the talent aged out! Both Buddy & Mike were meant to a couple for a few years! But after the Breakup! They would never reach the same plateau again! RIP Buddy Ryan a true Field Combat General!

It sounds like you're suggesting that the hiring of Ditka somehow led to Jim Finks leaving the Bears. Nothing could be farther from the truth. When George Halas died, the McCaskey's asked Finks to stay on to mentor their son, Michael. It was Halas' dying wish that his grandson, Michael, not be given control of the team and Finks shared that opinion. Finks owned a little over 3% of the team. The only leverage he had to receive fair value for his stock was to find a buyer. The McCaskey's had the right to match any offer Finks received. When Finks got Jerry Reinsdorf to make a bona fide offer, the McCaskey's were forced into matching it in order to prevent Reinsdorf from becoming a member of their board of directors. Jerry Vainisi replaced Finks as GM. Vainisi and Ditka had a close relationship. Vainisi was Ditka's only ally, but Michael McCaskey had his own ideas for running the club. He said he couldn't work with Vainisi; so he fired him. Things went downhill from there, when Michael took full control of the operation. Finks was responsible for bringing in Buddy Ryan from Minnesota, but the hiring of Ditka was strictly George Halas' idea. (It was Halas' son, Mugs, the heir apparent, who brought in Finks. But when Mugs died of a heart attack in 1979, Halas took more control. For whatever reason, Halas used Vainisi as a go-between in any communications with Finks.) One other note. Finks was well aware of the friction between Ditka and Ryan. He even asked Ditka if he wanted Buddy fired. Ditka declined the offer. He knew Buddy's value to the team and, so, they continued to co-exist. Had Mugs outlived his dad, Finks would not have left when he did, and the Bears' future, at least in the short term, would have been a lot different.

Each generation has an opinion on who was best but I agree with Leo on Willie Mays. I was not yet 8 years old in1957 and my Dad took me to Wrigley Field to see the Cubs and the then-NY Giants. We always got there early to see outfield and infield practice and BP. I remember Willie catching flies with his basket catch and even catching some behind his back, very impressive. I remember the Giants taking BP and they all looked the same until Willie got to hit. On a 1 to 10 scale of intensity, Willie was a 12. He got in the box and started hitting shots into the outfield, some off the grass, some off the wall, and some into the seats, all line drives. It seemed to a kid like he was a superman, he was head and shoulders above anyone else. I've seen a lot of games and a lot of players since then but nobody, NOBODY as great as Willie Mays was. May the Almighty give him rest and eternal joy in heaven.

It was followed by reaction from Shaquille O'Neal, who said, "Phil was not a racist". The only sound bite from Pippen had him saying "he felt disrespected by Phil."
