What's Going Wrong on Tryfan in Snowdonia?
Переглядів 85 тис.21 годину тому
If you're not sure of your abilities, I suggest finding a mountain leader based in Snowdonia. There are plenty and they can show you the terrain on Tryfan. As you can see from my footage, Tryfan is a very rugged route and it's easy to get lost, especially in low cloud. Visit Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue's incident report page, it's a real eye-opener: ogwen-rescue.org.uk/incident-details/ Here's...

Salewa Wildfire 2 Scrambling Shoes Review

This is what I think of the Salewa Wildfire 2 scrambling/approach shoes - sold on Amazon: amzn.to/3WalIoc Let me show you how they perform on wet and dry rock and on various graded scrambles. I don't hold back as I give you my honest, unfiltered opinion. In a nutshell, they're very narrow and not as grippy on wet rock compared to my La Sportiva TXs ( amzn.to/45VjUCR ) but they're not all bad. D...

Join me as I tackle the Nor Nor Gully Scramble on Tryfan. A few years ago I published a video of the adjacent but easier Nor Nor Groove route, now I'm back for more. This gully has three rises and the last one is known as the "Evil Third Rise". In Steve Ashton's Scrambles in Snowdonia book, this scramble is rated as a 2 and has a fun rating of 1 star out of 3. That sounds about right to me, I'm...
How Difficult is the Llanberis Path up Snowdon?

Here I show you the Llanberis Path up Snowdon, including drone footage of the route. I also discuss the terrain, how challenging the route is, how long the walk takes and how many hours the average person takes there and back. The Llanberis Path is widely considered the least rugged route but it's still a long, tiring walk and there are dangers that have taken lives over the years. Consider the...

I was talking to a member of the mountain rescue team that I was going to walk up Snowdon. He told me I should go up the Crib Goch route which, trusting him, I did. As it was my first time up the mountain I didnt realise it was a knife edge scramble until I got there, Cheers Tony!!!Needless to say I took the Pyg track down.

love this site . I use it regular for making my UA-cam campfire cooking videos. as the setting is perfect. I dint really have a problem with dogs barking. the only problem I had was I didn't book online as i have been visiting this site for many years and you didn't need to book however the last few times I have visited I have had to move off because the site was fully booked not a problem for me as I know many alternative sites in the area. I strongly recommend booking first before turning up. here is a video i filmed there. ua-cam.com/video/gsB4-ndEVzc/v-deo.html

This has always been an issue. The increased volume of visitors due to the rising popularity of hiking and mountaineering post-pandemic means incidents are occurring more often. I was atop the nearby Pen Llithrig y Wrach recently with binoculars and was astounded by how busy Tryfan looked. Additionally, while apps like AllTrails are useful, they can sometimes make certain areas or routes seem less challenging than they actually are. You can’t just rock up, press Start and follow your phone when you’re in some of these places; basic skills and forward planning are essential. The Instagram photos don’t show the hazards.

Tryfan was my favourite mountain to scramble up when I lived in that area, thirty years ago. I've been up it in all weathers, and been stuck near the top in a storm, hunkering down in a survival bag, as well as in glorious sunshine, with the most amazing views.... but it is dangerous for the unwary and inexperienced, when the weather can switch so quickly and you can easily lose your bearings when the clouds come down. I nearly went off a cliff in the Carneddau once, rushing down in a mist before it got dark. Even back then, we used to see people trying to climb up Tryfan (and Crib Goch) in flip flops, with no equipment or emergency weather gear. I dread to think what it's like these days, as more people head there.

Went there with an informal group, about 25 yrs ago. Due to a breakdown in communication, I was told this was not a rock climbing trip (I was an experienced hill walker but don't rock climb) but we came to the bottom of a steep rockface and all the gear, ropes etc. came out. I gave it a go but nearly dislocated my shoulder reaching for a hold (it audibly snapped back when I let go and was sore for weeks!). I then left the others and scrambled up by an easier route, which turned out fine, though I was sitting in the car in the freezing cold for 3 hours (no mobiles) while they finished!

70+ years of dysgenics and cultural rot is what went wrong, and media hype surrounding mountaineering. Traditionally in England mountains were considered ugly warts on the land, a blight. But the media tells them to go, so they go.

    • @rambleswolf
      @rambleswolf День тому

What are you going on about? I'm from England and literally no one thinks mountains are ugly or a blight on the landscape. Maybe we're not very enthusiastic climbers, but able-bodied people enjoy gentle hikes if they go somewhere mountainous. Places like the Lake District, Peak District, or Snowdonia wouldn't be popular if no one liked the look of mountains. Get a grip 😂

Been up there more times than I can remember in all weather! The one I remember the most was after a snow covered crib goth trip and that night in the pub my mates were let’s do Try-fan tomorrow. I knew it would be tough in winter but covered in ice was one of my scariest climbs of my life! Respect mother nature or get bitten or killed we were so bloody lucky that day but young dumb and full of….👍 stay safe people and the mountains will always be there another day. You may not be so always be prepared to turn back and go to a nice warm pub rather than a cold grave 👍🫣

I cut my teeth as a climber/mountaineer in Snowdonia back in the 80's and Tryfan was always a favourite. Hard, yes. Scary, yes. Your advice to use a mountain guide is excellent. I used a guide a couple of times in the alps and it was an excellent training/learning experience. Thoroughly recommended. Great video with its mix of inspiration, advice and warning. 5th Tip: Don't forget that Tryfan and most of the surrounding area are a no drone use area, so keep those drone's in your backpack folks, if in doubt check the National Trust land map which shows you exactly where drone use is prohibited in Snowdonia, and on top of that the national park don't allow drone use on any route considered a main and popular route up any of the mountains.

Daniel -- Many thanks for your guidance up the South Ridge of Tryfan. This video should be shown to all Army Cadets the evening before they carry out the ascent. There are many opportunities to do map reading on route. I like your excellent advice to start on the easiest route. The British Army does not appreciate dead Cadets, neither do parents. A sure way to get Court Marshalled! I jumped from Adam to Eve (at the top), but no sooner had I done so, the wind picked up and it was too dangerous for anyone else to have a go. But I'll leave the North Face to the professionals!

Sure, but the Heather Terrace route ends just over halfway up the South Ridge so scramblers could do that or just go up the South Ridge. I've seen a few folks struggle to find the Terrace but once on it, it's fairly straightforward. Both are easier than the NR, in my opinion.

I am 54 and do not hike or mountaineer in any way shape or form. My son has previously climbed Snowdonia twice and asked me to join him for his third visit. I did ….however having never ever been up any mountain previously I found it a massive struggle. I only got to the top with his help and yes I had cramp coming down as the coming down was absolutely dreadful. He had summited it via a different route to the one we took together, that one being shorter. I had the image that because so many people climb Snowdon every day of the year it wouldn’t be that hard, more of a day out really than it being difficult and dangerous. doubt I will ever try anything like that again for risk of needing to call mountain rescue because I would feel really guilty if I did. My point being is that it is more common now for anyone to do this sort of thing but without really realising the dangers/risks involved and. I am not surprised folks get into trouble pretty quick because we don’t have the knowledge or expertise to stay out of trouble attempting stuff like this.

I'm glad to see someone giving the truth of what tryfan is. It's a mountain not to be taken lightly! I want to do it, but waiting for someone who knows it who wants to go up again. Obv I do think social media is partially to blame, I'm often seeing videos saying "don't go up snowdon/Yr wyddfa go here" but let's not forget there was a walking book which advised it was an easy route and a man following this also died.

I couldn’t believe it the other week when The Guardian published a list of ten lesser known places to head to and put Tryfan on the list. Yes, it’s not Snowdon - but it’s a technical climb or scramble from virtually all directions and not for the inexperienced or ill equipped, if conditions are off. So what’s gone wrong - you have to learn - and social media or mainstream media promoting but not educating is the issue.

Nought wrong with knowing your limitations or living to fight another day. It's not "chickening out" ... many peeps have died in Snowdonia because they didn't 'chicken out' ... or were just ill-prepared. I no longer climb as I have herniated discs and refuse to risk having to call out volunteers and choppers. No way.
