  • Join me as I tackle the Nor Nor Gully Scramble on Tryfan. A few years ago I published a video of the adjacent but easier Nor Nor Groove route, now I'm back for more.
    This gully has three rises and the last one is known as the "Evil Third Rise".
    In Steve Ashton's Scrambles in Snowdonia book, this scramble is rated as a 2+ and has a fun rating of 1 star out of 3. That sounds about right to me, I'm glad I tried this scramble but it's not the finest so I doubt I'll be back doing it again anytime soon.
    Nor Nor Gully is sometimes used as a descent route by those lost on the North Ridge scramble, as you'll see from my footage, only experienced roped parties should descend this line as it's steep in places and often wet.

    Another great video Dan. I like your new camera and I never tire of the drone footage which I could watch for hours. I was up Bastow last Monday but I think it was a different day to you as I had sunshine (mostly)

      @thebaldscrambler definitely great scrambling material. I didn't fit the chasm so doubt you will either. But the catwalk is definitely the highlight. Short section though

    *Oh, for a few weeks of unrelenting dry, sunny weather! I'm off work this week and the original intention - some weeks back - was a trip up to North Wales for some action. Sadly, the weather forecast grew worse as the time drew near. I'm now at home in Essex and in my kitchen watching yet another one of your excellent videos, the next best thing. My only complaint is that they're not longer. Regards, Carl*

    I've never done any scrambling, climbing or anything like that and never want to but I love watching these videos. I am curious about how you get down though. Do you just do the upward journey in reverse? That seems to me as if going down would be more difficult and dangerous than going up.

    • @This.Island.Earth68
      @This.Island.Earth68 24 дні тому +1

      It depends on the route. Some easier routes *can* be reversed but it's usual practice to pick up a hiking path once you're ready to descend the mountain, regardless of how "easy" the scramble might be 👍

    • @thebaldscrambler
      @thebaldscrambler  23 дні тому

      Rarely do I go down the way I came up, usually I just find a path and go elsewhere, maybe to another scramble or to the summit etc. After this one, I went to the summit of Tryfan and then down the West Gully back to the A5. I usually plan my day in advance with backup plans if the route is full of people or the weather changes etc.

    Have you done the main gully before ?

  • @TG-pd3ft
    @TG-pd3ft 23 дні тому +1

    The actual G3 route has been the scene of many fatalities. Daniel perhaps edit the title to make it clear you didn't climb Nor No Gully G3 as the only G3 bit is the bit you (wisely) dodged?

    • @thebaldscrambler
      @thebaldscrambler  23 дні тому +2

      I'm certainly open to suggestions, but do you really feel it's necessary? I just rewatched the video again and it seems I did a good job of accurately describing the "evil third rise," included some drone footage and a photo, and explained why and how I avoided that nasty bit. I guess I could change it to "Nor Nor Gully: Avoiding The 'Evil Third Rise,'" but do you think it would make any difference? Aren't most of the accidents from newbies trying to descend the NR to Heather Terrace? If you have a title suggestion, feel free to share it. Perhaps "Bailing Off Nor Nor Gully Before the Evil Third Rise" or something similar?

    Scrambling on greasy rock and loose surfaces looks extremely dangerous. Is it? Or does experience in fact give you significant protection?

  • @gb.snippets
    @gb.snippets 24 дні тому +1

    Thanks for convincing me to not try this scramble. Not a fan of slippery rock, no matter the grade.
    Have you considered a "follow me" drone? Because, how I imagin the perfect video is: a complete scramble filmed the way you did Dolmen crux. Would show the footwork better.

    • @thebaldscrambler
      @thebaldscrambler  23 дні тому

      My drone does have a follow me feature but it works best on a ridge or when I'm walking on a flat surface with few obstacles around. It needs to be quite close to follow and in a gully with rock everywhere as it triggers the sensors all the time and eventually gives up and stays still. I'll try and get some more footage of me on rock from a static drone next time I'm out.

    • @gb.snippets
      @gb.snippets 19 днів тому

      @@thebaldscrambler Uncut static drone shots will do. But I imagine it's a hell of a job to film a complete scramble like that, or at least the cruxes/interesting parts. Still I think it would be unbeatably informative and most fun to watch.
