Y Gribin Scramble in The Glyderau: Easy or Not?

  • Watch me tackle Y Gribin in the Glyderau. I chose this grade 1 scramble as there was some ice on the mountains, and as I was scrambling alone, I wanted a route that offered the option of an easier line. (taking a right hand line away from the steep edge reduces the risk of a fall on this route).
Y Gribin is a delightful hiking and scrambling route that starts near Llyn Bochlwyd and finishes on a plateau between the popular summits of Glyder Fach and Glyder Fawr.
I've always found this route easy and trouble-free but there was a fatality about a year ago.
What do you think if this route? Some say it's easy while others mention the fatality last year. Let me and others know via the comments section.

I would agree it’s an excellent introduction to scrambling and ends up with a great choice of where to go next.

I agree but 3 days before I filmed this video someone fell and died so I guess that highlights that no route is safe, not even ones I/we consider at the safest end of the scale. Dan.

This ridge was featured in the BBC series SOS: Extreme Rescues, Series 1, ep 7. Available now on i-player.

Used it as descent on the Llyn Bochlwyd horseshoe. It’s a fantastic and quiet route. I’ve also ascended it once in heavy snow which was very enjoyable. Sticking to the crest of the ridge makes it feel more like a crib goch sort of route just not quite as exposed.
The Glyderau is just special in general, as I’m sure you know well, Dan. Good to see you’re out and about early in 2024. Have a good hiking and scrambling year 🤙🏻

Yep, a nice easy one to start the year. Just waiting for the weather to improve for the next one.

Happy New Year Baldy. We haven't done it yet, but we've climbed up through Devils Kitchen which we loved.

I would say that the best for beginners is the Daear Ddu ridge on Moel Siabod ... 'cos if they don't like it, just move to your left and it get's easier ... and there's an easy way down by the Pony Path, instead of that horrible scree path down from Glyder Fawr

Nice and easy apart from that scree slope.Devils Kitchen is always wet and slippery even in summer

Great little video 👍 Is there any exposure on the path to the right of the ridge? Thanks

      Not really. It's pretty tame

Not much to the right of the ridgeline tbh. You can pull it up on Google maps and switch it to satellite View and you'll see the terrain better. I was unable to get drone footage of that section as it was too windy on the day.

Was my first ridge scramble in the UK. Definitely not the easiest one Imo, Daeaer Ddu ridge on moel siabod or its little brother below, the false gribin are great starters.
    Nonetheless a great scramble

I haven't done those two. I think this is the easiest scramble I've done, other stuff barely qualifies as a scramble. I was hoping to get some more drone footage of this ridge but it was too windy, still a great day out though.

@thebaldscrambler unfortunately windy a lot, my drone has been stowed more than actually out flying 😂
Daeaer Ddu is a nice scramble, you'll enjoy that. Just a bit marshy so stay high by the lake! Didn't rate the false gribin much tbf

Thinking of doing Y Gribin next week with the family & dog (very fit & agile), do-able with a dog? Any thoughts welcome, thanks 🙏

Didn't someone die on it last year

From the incident report, he fell quite far so I assume he must have been on the steep edge of the ridge. Its rare to see incidents on that ridge, but I guess they can happen anywhere.

Is this current footage i.e Jan 2024 ? Only asking as the summits seem very snow shy Thanks for sharing

Filmed on New year's Day. There was snow settled yesterday on Snowdon but only the top hundred metres or so. Some ice on the upper Watkin Path with crampons essential in places.
