1952 to 2002? Why so many years before canada won gold?
The IOC banned professional players, and Soviet players were defined as amateurs. Since all the best Canadian players were in the NHL, the best Canadian players weren't eligible.
The 1950s saw the emergence of the USSR as a hockey power and for decades they were sending their best players to the Olympics while Canada did not, as they were all playing in the NHL. (Credit to the USA, who did break through twice to win gold as an underdog during this 50 year stretch between Canadians. The NHL started sending guys to the Olympics in 1998 but Canada couldn’t pull it off the first go around because they lost to a really good Czech team.
How on earth did this team struggle this bad? I mean I know they won but holy...
My favorite moment was obviously the coffin ceiling goal by Sakic near the end of the gold medal game, but after to terrible games by Canada to open the tournament, I’ll never forget injured captain Mario Lemieux, after being benched for the 2nd game, waking Canada up by scoring the first 2 goals against the Czechs in game 3.
5:55 Gretzky likes to whine a lot, eh. When Canada is losing they always play dirty, slashing, croschecking, poking, cheapshots you name it. But that's okay, that's hockey, eh. European teams suffered this treatment from Canadians for decades, but they learned the game. So by the late ninetees they started to give back. And then is the "poor canadians" being the victims, being "hated". No they just got back what they planted along those years with their superiority complex.
what he said was strictly facts
gretzky is not winning is just the fack .. have you see the olympic 2002 at salt lake city?
@@francoissomphanthabansouk3022 yea where canada won gold, what about it?
Awesome video! Honestly this needs more views! I love how much hockey videos I’ve been seeing on UA-cam recently!
@JimiFargo Thanks!
No way of telling conclusively. It has to stand as a no goal
I was pretty young so i don't remember much but just seeing the lineup canada had im very surprised every game other than the semi-final was so close and that Eric Brewer had more points than Lindros and Shanahan
i wish canada would bring back these jerseys. they are classics
Agreed!
SWEATERS!
They are the best. Hands down.
It’s ok Sabres fans, we took care of them the next year. No goal. That’s my opinion.
This was hockey at its best. Physical, intense and insanely fun to watch.
Lindross is the reason I become so into playing Power Forward. Seeing how he could score, skate, hit, fight, and lead a team, it's why I've loved and respected the position even to this day!!!
Mascots who actually accept doing stunts like these are truly worthy of appraise!
The Whalers and the Nordiques shouldn't have moved. Iconic teams despite their moderate success on the ice in their NHL stints.
The trap was created to counter the sudden burst of growing talent in the league. We will never see another pool of talent like the 90s EVER again. In order to counter all that talent, they had to increase the defense and toughness. The players were getting bigger, faster, and more talented, so they countered it with more toughness. It's that simple. Make a 2020s All-Stars team and put it against a late 90s All-Stars team in a real game. The 2020s team (and their weak 2024 style defense) would get shut down and destroyed, it's not even funny. The 2020s would have 0% chance to win with the 90s rules, EVERYBODY knows that! Whereas the odds for the late 90s team with modern rules is fairly 50-50. In a one game format, the advantage would go to the 2020s team with modern rules, so 25-75 or 20-80 perhaps. However, in a playoff format, the late 90s team would have the advantage the longer the series are. MOREOVER, remove the referees from the ice, now tell me what are the odds? 🤣 These kids are clueless.
Better than Bure imo
You just had to throw the Ottawa Ghost reference in there
Yeah, interesting. I can see why folks would like this era, it was pretty tight as hell and often brutal. Not 50's to 80's level brutal, but still pretty darn ugly and I think in many ways, far more cynical. This was despite the NHL beginning to clamp down on enforcers and brawlers midway through this cultural moment. Unfortunately, with the demise of the enforcers, the policing of grievous fouls committed on offensive players on and off the puck went to shit. Moreover, without the tough guys around, you actually saw a lot more persistant dirty shit going on. Pulling, sticking, hooking, cheap elbow shots... some of them are truly hideous to behold. Thus, a lot of excellent players had to become nasty guys out there. That for me is one of the sadder aspects of the DPE.
I grew up with the yotes, they are the reason I play an watch Hockey. My first ever game live was their mascots birthday against the Stars. I got to go to one of their Playoffs games when they played against Nashville. This team has done so much for me and I am sad they are gone. I think they should just put them in the suns stadium, Utah has shown that the awkward stadium layout can work, and I honestly think the section that hangs off looks cool. I just want Hockey back in my home. Fuck UTAH!!!
So The Allen Cup was as prestigious as The Stanley Cup. Calgary Stampeders were our adult team. One could argue that the teams that played in The Corral as Home Ice could be considered for the Battle of Alberta. This was good except you need to run your audio through a processor to get rid of the mic blows. Do a test and adjust your mic position next time and it won't even happen. Cheers
Era sucked
I was lucky enough to grow up as a teenager in Alberta in the 80s. It was the greatest hockey in the history of the NHL. Calgary had a great team the entire time but the Oilers were always just a little better. The Flames finally got over the hump because of Steve Smith's own-goal. To those that never witnessed this stuff, I can't really describe how wild it all was.
what's wrong with the voice? is it being pitch shifted and/or time stretched?
So they should make a huge crease around the goalie. Goalie stays there etc. Anytime a player enters that crease for whatever reason, play should be whistled down.
Wow. This was an amazing insightful summary of a great rivalry in the NHL. While I am an Oilers fan and I do reside in Calgary, I have nothing but respect for the Flames. As long as the Flames can build around Wolf, they have a great future. Also, I was wondering if you are somehow related to another Flames fan with a great UA-cam channel, Jonathan Hawkey. I mean both your narration voices are great and are similar in telling great stories. Keep up the good work!
Thanks! No connection with Johnny Hawkey, but agree his content is great!
what a rare happy ending
Was there a commercial (for beer?) where a person, perhaps a Texan in a cowboy hat, was suggesting this, and was thrown out of an NHL board room with a red tail after him?
History? Gazdic- Westgarth on #hockeyfights😊
Dead puck era just reminds me of how much of a POS Scott Stevens is
It used to be The Battle of Alberta, now it's The Slight Disagreement of Alberta. From April 4 '86 - Jan 7 '89 Calgary lost only 5 out of the 22 regular season games vs Edmonton but lost 7 of the 11 playoff games they played in that same span.
Back in the 1980s, I was a Flames fan, and hated the Oilers. Regardless of Edmonton's success, I hated them. 1986 and 1989 were satisfying times for me. Today, I hardly watch hockey, and don't have a favorite team. I still hate the Oilers, though.
Good video. I’d retitle it and make it less Alberta based so you broader appeal. Something like “History of Hockeys most VIOLENT rivalry,”
This is like a sweet slice of old UA-cam. Just a guy talking about something he cares about for a little while, with relevant 480p clips played in all their glory, and instrumentals of licensed music as the backing track. Not only do I miss hockey like this, I miss videos like this
As a Flames fan, I knew watching this video was a bad idea
Beauty. Well done, this is very well made. Signed a person who attended every Oilers home game from 1979 - 1986.
Would have been better if there was captioning for the hearing impaired.
Boys vs Men. Go Oilers.
oiLers suck!
Oilers and WHA teams were raped by the NHL upon the merger, could only protect a few stars, Oil lost solid d men Colin Campbell, Paul Shmyr, Dave Langevin. All good, we kept Gretz and Sather built a team around him and ran roughshod through the league that decade. The ultimate scorecard should be. Edmonton 5 cups Calgary 1
I like how u put both of steven's hits that ended careers in it. No one seems to talk about that anymore. Same with mark messier. He threw elbows and shouldnt be on tnt coverage.
If it was truly a dead puck time, imagine how good the greats from that time wouldve been 20 yrs earlier!
Rough hits against calgary are ok but ones against Edmonton are the kinda things that should get players banned
Beautiful video but. I’m so blessed I was born in Edmonton in the same hospital my Dadio was born in! So glad we beat the Flames. Interesting how the 15 goal game happened just over 30 years later instead of the the 80,s lol. This must been a hard video for you to make since by judging just on your profile pictures your a Flames fan, unless you put that picture just in respect for Johnny Hockey which is amazing of you to do!
Hahah, you are correct, I'm a Flames fan. It was tough at first, but it helped me process all those playoff losses 😭
@RedHotHockeyYYC lol I knew it. Well eh I'm an Oilers for life and I Subscribed to a Flames fan channel. You must be doing something right!
@@RedHotHockeyYYC remember that the oilers are the luckiest team ever in 5yrs they won the draft. We are one of the only teams that doesn't have a first over all. But we know how to draft fox (you suck) Johnny rip geo best d-man 2018. And wolf🔥🔥
Which city is more nice
Calgary 😊
Great video. Probably should have included the Talbot-Smith goalie fight game on the history part. That game was a hoot.
Yeah man, whats even crazier is that we traded goalies that season. Like wtf 😂 That whole game was absolutely insane.
FLAMES
Cant believe it took 31 years for the BOA to happen again. Not cool. I hope we get more BOA playoffs. Glad Edmonton won!
Nice video.
Thanks!
Almost seems like the Flames blew a lot of 2 or 3 goal leads against Edmonton in playoffs
DeaD PUick is the best.
