Harvey Blade Guard and Riving Knife review
Found the solution to the 0 lock. The 2 silver square front and back, its a left hand screw, TURN IT COUNTER CLOCKWISE as far as it can go. It will lock perfectly.
Thanks for the informative videos what is the max rip capacity when you add the cast iron to the left side and move the miter gauge to the left set of grooves in the sliding table as you shown in the video ? 5:00
I have never had to think about the capacity left of the blade. With the slider in place I wouldn't use the mitre gauge at all and I have successfully trimmed an inch of the bottom of a 7' door. It really is only limited by the space in the shop and the weight of the piece that you are cutting.
Incidentally for anyone coming across this video now you can buy the right side cast iron extension wing for about $150 ish depending on the sale. It gives you more cast iron to the left of the blade and also has holes already in it as it is meant to attach to any of Harvey's other right side tables.
You are saying ....You can buy this Right Wing and put it on the left side? And it still works with sliding ripper St1500? I actually in the middle of researching this setup and am close to pulling the trigger. Do you own it? We cant trust these youtubers these days. Many are straight up shills to these merchants. Then again this saw setup seems to be a good value.
Very helpful. Just now assembling the same saw and considering adding the sliding table. Will have to do a little more measuring and a little more head scratching before I pull the trigger on the slider.
Just a couple of thoughts. If the slider is more useful to you than the 52" fence you could go with the 36" fence and the slider or you could leave off the left cast wing but that would only save 7". The slider is a real blessing to me as I make all my cutting boards starting by slicing 60" slabs of 2" thick stock and that can't safely be done without it. It really is a great saw.
Hi Brian Have You Found Any Fixes To These Problem's I Have The same Issues On Mins And Not Sure What to Do
Once I discovered that the screws that hold the mitre straight are right hand thread it got better. (I did another video showing this). I also keep the second red handle from the regular mitre gauge in the centre hole all the time. I discovered that it was pretty rare for me to do a cut other than 90 degrees. It still annoys me that the thing doesn't click into the detents and stay put but other than this I am quite pleased with the saw.
@jbcustomwoodworking4155 ok thanks maybe I'll contact harvey and request a red knob
@jbcustomwoodworking4155 still not sure what I can do on the rulers on that device
You need to read the instructions. Counterclockwise is clearly marked.
They are two different rulers use the sight glass for the second one. Set it from your blade.
Dude you need to tighten those screws in the front and back on the little silver squares. Your miter should not be sliding up and down like that. The piece with the degrees on it stays in place secured by the screws inside the silver squares
Wondering if you have since upgraded to the Big-Eye fence?
Hi Ross, If I was ordering a new saw I would probably order the Big Eye but it makes no sense to spend $1500 to replace a perfectly good fence. There is simply no way for me to justify the cost.
Thank you so much for the intelligent and informative analysis. So nice to see videos like this without all the ridiculous memes and shop jocks trying to be comedians.
Hmmm buddy's shop has one of these laying around as they went to a Big Eye, may see if it will fit my Unisaw
Sorry to hear you had issues with the saw. For what it's worth Once I finally got through to a manager at Harvey service they were very helpful. I have been using the saw for over a year now and am still very happy with it.
Are you still running the slider on the outside of the wong? I am thinking about installing mine like that as well. Dod you drill and tap the holes in the wing or did you drilla whole and use bolts with a nut?
Still running it the same way. No issues. I drilled new holes and used M8 x 30 bolts and nuts.
These were really big issues for me. Thanks to Harvey’s terrible manual, I wasted many hours. I almost threw this thing in the trash.
Curious why you rely to some questions and not others?
Your experience with Harvey is similar to my experience with Saw Stop customer service.. utterly clueless.
I have Alpha 3hp 36in saw. It has been great for me, but I think you missed somethings in your video. About your complaints: The sharp metal tag on the rip fence scratching the rail. No sympathy here because this issue is expressly called out in the assembly instructions. The jig that doesn't work because of the depth of the saw. This is an advertised feature; the cast iron top is bigger by several inches than the competitors. Cheers.
So I guess drilling two holes to the blade is too much work?
0 degree cuts are overrated, old fashioned, and should be avoided at all costs! 😉
I was able to remove the adhesive by rolling the adhesive up with my thumbs.
Did you ever figure out why the rulers move in the sliding table fence?
Hey great vid! How rigid are the stops? Do they deflect or are they solid?
They do seem to be solid but because 90% of the cuts I make are right angles, I add the extra security of the second handle from the regular mitre gauge just to be sure. Overall I am very pleased with the unit.
Question: Does dust build up inside your cabinet? I have the 4hp Harvey TS and no matter what I've tried, the cabinet fills up with dust. Seems like the chute below the blade catches very little of the dust. I use a 3hp double bag dust collector that works great with all other machines in my shop, which are all downstream of the table saw. Thank you!
Try lighter fluid or naphtha to take off the glue.
Hi, using the Diablo thin kerf, you should change to a thin riving knife correct?
Curious, how big your shop space is? I have a 2 car garage (20’x20’). Your saw set-up seems like an awfully large island to both walk around and or that would consume valuable floor space.
Merry Christmas brother.
Might need your wife to tighten the knob
Those back nylon glides screws are not the ones to adjust the fence. You have to use the Allen screws on the inner portion of the rail to adjust the fence in relationship to the sawblade.
As for the goo try WD40 er equivalent to soften and devolve it then break cleaner to finish cleaning.
90% or better isopropol alcohol will remove that glue...
Yeah the attempt to make the blade proprietary was a total deal breaker for me. That and the dust collection issues that I have seen on other videos of the saw.
The blade having the two extra cap screws is explained in other comments here and Harvey will even tell you that they can be removed. I literally got off a call with Harvey today to talk about their blades as I just got their table saw in October of this year. They specifically mentioned I can use any blade with this table saw. I have seen a few videos talk about dust collection on the Harvey and I have seen other videos from youtubers that like the dust collection on the Harvey. I have also seen many videos of other table saws and they all seem to have similar issues with dust collection using the blade guard type dust shrouds and even the swing out dust arms. I would not refuse to buy a table saw because of dust. Let's face it, the architecture of table saws are very similar, so there would be an expectation that dust issues would be common amongst many of the various saws.
Dealbreaker? Doesn’t sound like you researched them at all.
angle grinder will take care of it
Great video. The lockdown bolt is captive in the silver upper slide, when you turn it, anti clockwise it forces the bottom bar away. Don't over tighteen.
Hey mate, how accurate would you say the sliding table is? Is it dead accurate or is there some slight play?
Hi Dan, once you get used to the left hand thread on the mounts it is stable. Because I do 90% of my cuts at 90 degrees I always add the second knob from the mitre gauge as a back up. The glide action on the table is excellent. I recently had to trim 1/4 inch off the bottom of a 60 lb. garden gate and it worked beautifully. You can also choose where you mount the slider on the saw. I rarely cut full sheet goods so I moved it 12 inches ahead so it doesn't stick out past the back rail and hinder my movements when I am working. I hope this helps.
I did the same exact thing to my rail the first time I put my fence on the table saw. I put a giant 6" scratch in my front rail because that stupid fence clamp tab was in the wrong position. I was so pissed!
You can remove the knife when doing this and don't have to worry about the tape position
Glad I didn’t get a Harvey. Have a good one
Seems like its a coomon issue with a lot of saw blades when researching the top builds. I saw another video where they showed top of the line dust collection system to rigid shop vac demo. That all results came out the same. What Table saw did you end up getting?
Ended up going back with Sawstop. I’ve worked on a handful of other saws. But have to admit the sawstop does really well.
zero clearance tape. Why double sided? wont the sticky side facing up snag your workpiece, keeping it from sliding smoothly across the table and throatplate??
I doubt if it is double sided I think he mis spoked.
Tenoning jig. guess there is no industry standard for slot spacing. I think saw mfrs should meet and decide on a standard cause like you said. If Harvey has a problem with it, many others will too. And while they are at it, they should make standards for many other measurements that are not standard.
Believe it or not CHARCOAL LIGHTER FLUID is the best rubber based glue remover. I've been amazed at how well it works. I discovered it when reading cleanup instructions on an old can of Armstrong Rubber based glue for vinyl flooring tile.
to clean try brake cleaner
Wait you said the slider comes with the saw so you buy the saw and the slider comes with it in package
The sliding table is an option but when i bought mine I went all in, 4 HP 52" outfeed and the slider. You can buy other configurations if they suit you better or if space is an issue.
Try turpentine for the goop
What are your thoughts of adding an Incra fence system to this saw? I am impressed with the Incra system for all it adds to versatility and repeatability to any saw. I have a Delta Cabinet saw and have considered purchasing a Harvey. Having said that when I contacted Harvey and asked if they would sell their saw without the fence an rails they refused.
The fence and rails setup that comes with the Harvey is as good as any I have ever owned. Incra makes a decent one as well but I dont think it would be enough of a difference to justfy the cost
Acetone
Have you figured out a good way to store the miter when removed?
This is kinda weird but I set it on top of my blue recycle bin. It. Fits nicely
I have this fence and one annoyance is the fact that, due to the fence geometry, you can't use L clamps and drilled holes to quickly attach a sacrificial fence.
Now your wood will catch the front of the taper and hinder progress or peel the tape until it catches on the underside of the board causing a dangerous situation. Yeah, good idea. $100 for a zero clearance insert? Well, just make one out of hard wood, not sure what kind of woodworker you are but this is a stupid video.
Yeah, I just got a new Harvey saw and the owners manual sucks!
