    If 90% of patients need a deeper stretch at the one week mark, why wouldn't the same thing be needed at two weeks? Three weeks? I'm wondering if long term follow-ups are needed to ensure that initial resolution of symptoms and satisfaction are maintained.

    • @TongueTieAL
      @TongueTieAL 11 днів тому

      Once the parents see the proper stretch, then they do it properly after the one week mark. We tell them to come back if any symptoms come back or get worse. They email us or come back in person in many cases. It can occasionally reattach after the one week mark, but it's more rare.

    What percentage of patients see some immediate improvement in symptoms after surgery? Do younger babies improve faster post surgery?

    • @TongueTieAL
      @TongueTieAL 11 днів тому

      Hello, I would say 95%+ see improvements after the procedure based on our data (and also studies on tongue-ties). It has to be diagnosed properly, examined properly, treated properly, have the right post-op stretches and follow-up to see those results, though (as discussed in the lecture).

    What is the recovery process like? Pain? For a toddler

    • @TongueTieAL
      @TongueTieAL 2 місяці тому

      It's sore for a couple of days. You do have to do stretches 2x a day for 4 weeks and they do not like that. It also needs to be released property. Many people will not release a tongue tie on a toddler without general anesthesia. We do it in the office with just numbing jelly and have people travel from around the country because they can't find someone locally to do it the right way and also not putting them to sleep. Give us a call at 205-419-4333 if you're interested! -Dr. Baxter

    Is it normal for the 5 year old to be screaming in pain with the stretches on day 4 after the procedure? I feel so awful having to do this.

    • @TongueTieAL
      @TongueTieAL 2 місяці тому

      Hello, it is terrible. If there was a better way to prevent the tongue from sticking back to the floor of the mouth, I promise we would do that! Typically the first week is the most sore for the stretches, and then it gets better from there. It should be moderately uncomfortable, just like if you were stretching your leg or arm after exercising, but everyone senses pain differently. At the follow up check some kids seem to have a lot of pain, and others let me stretch it with no tears and just sit there. Hope that makes sense! So sorry. The idea is that the benefits from the procedure outweigh the discomfort and terrible stretches. -Dr. Baxter

    Ripping open a healing wound on a baby? Seems brutal. I wouldn't want this done to me as an adult.

    • @TongueTieAL
      @TongueTieAL 6 місяців тому

      Hello, thank you for your questions. Ideally, stretches would be done with sufficient pressure so that no deeper stretch would be needed. Under the tongue, you have to keep the wound open, or else it will close up and the tongue will lose mobility, and the procedure will be rendered ineffective. Symptoms will return and may worsen as the child ages. So instead of re-treating and re-lasering, it's better to perform the "deeper stretch," which is really just a normal stretch with sufficient pressure. It will often open back up, which feels like taking a scab off your knee. But it's better than the alternative of putting the child through another procedure. I hope this makes sense. What's brutal is leaving children with significant oral restrictions (tongue ties) and not diagnosing them or clipping them halfway and not informing parents of aftercare protocols, and both parents and the child suffer needlessly. Tongue-ties can cause issues as babies, and the issues often multiply into speech, solid feeding, sleep, and breathing issues as the child gets older, and as an adult can manifest as neck and shoulder tension, breathing issues, sleep issues (apnea, snoring, etc.), among others.

    • @MrsAngloOrtho
      @MrsAngloOrtho 2 місяці тому

      I had this done as an adult, and did these stretches as deep and as hard as I could, as often as I could remember. It didn't hurt that bad at all. I even tried pressing directly on the wound and I could barely feel it. Tylenol works wonders!

    Thank you for this video. I'm in the UK, my daughter had her tongue cut after birth but we weren't given any information and were told to avoid tongue exercises because of an increased risk of infection. Her tongue tie has now reattached and formed scar tissue so much so that there isn't anything left to cut. We are now stuck seeing a chiropractor to try and relax/stretch the tongue so that a second incision can be made. Her feeding and her colic symptoms are getting worse (Although she is gaining weight still). We haven't see any changes to her tongue yet. It's impossible to know what the right thing to do is.

    • @TongueTieAL
      @TongueTieAL 5 місяців тому

      I'm sure it was only cut partially, that's why she is still having the issues. You need to find someone to evaluate it who can make sure it was done properly. This is our opinion based on thousands of patients and evaluating them at follow up visits and checking the healing based on different protocols.

    • @MrsAngloOrtho
      @MrsAngloOrtho 11 місяців тому

      @@TongueTieAL "checking the healing based on different protocols" I am so so interested in what you tried and what you found! The stretches are the hardest part of the tongue tied journey. A lot of moms in my Facebook group are tempted to give up because they are so difficult. If we knew the bare minimum required, it would make us all feel a lot better, because right now we feel like we're torturing our babies and we don't even know if it's worth it or if we're doing way more than is necessary.

    I went back to the dentist for a 1 week follow up last week. She said I needed to be a little more aggressive with the stretches because it was starting to slightly reattach. The exercises hadn’t been hurting him before this. He just didn’t like them. So that day she showed me again how to do it and kind of reopened up the wound. Ever since I can tell the stretches cause him a lot pain and his tongue also doesn’t look right. It’s like the diamond has opened up and split too far back. I’m scared that something is wrong with the healing process. I don’t want to stop doing the stretches but I’m afraid to keep doing them if it’s causing harm. Any advice is appreciated!

    • @MrsAngloOrtho
      @MrsAngloOrtho 11 місяців тому

      The point of the stretches is to keep the diamond open.

    • @TongueTieAL
      @TongueTieAL 11 місяців тому

      Yes, you want the diamond to be open, and heal vertically instead of sticking back together horizontally. Then you will lose mobility and symptoms will return. The stretches don’t feel good so likely they were not hard enough and that’s why it was sticking back together and didn’t seem to bother him. Unfortunately you just have to use more pressure. But it’s a short period of time in the grand scheme of things and should be worth it.

    I would love a copy of the book, and would definitely pass it along to our lactation consultant who did not see my baby’s tie. Thankfully I found a great speech pathologist to help us out with the diagnosis.

    How do I stop my 7 month old from biting down and blocking me from her tongue during the stretches? Her drool is also stopping me from being able to hold her chin down with my middle fingers. I'm worried about it reclosing

    Do you anesthetize this ?

    • @TongueTieAL

      We use a topical numbing jelly before the procedure. But the nice thing about using a laser is that we do not have to put the child to sleep under general anesthesia.

      Hi Naomi, it is variable for each patient. Most of the time it’s sore for a day or two but most kids with some Tylenol and / or Motrin honestly “act like nothing happened” when I call to check on them at night. The stretches to prevent the tongue tie from growing back together, done twice a day for three weeks is the hardest part. But it’s only about 10 seconds twice a day, so the child will cry and then typically calm down quickly. If you’d like to schedule a consult with us, you can call the office at 205-419-4333. Thanks! Dr. Baxter

    I have a problem I was to 15 different doctors Because "in my humble opinion" i have a Posterior tongue tie BUT A VERY subtle one My tongue is pretty flexible and able to move etc. But when i do the test with mouth opening and raising tongue front onto the back of the front teeth I see.and FEEL myself compensating just like 0.5 -1cm it seems in range of motion where i close my mouth a little to hit the back of the front teeth with the tongue. Now the doctors usually did NOT see any Problem at all BUT i can feel one ! It is subtle but HOW do i explain it to those german doctors cause they do NOT seem to be as much into tongue tie stuff as american doctors e.g. I need to know whether what i described is a TIE or not Cause like i said i compensate 0.5 to 1cm with mouth open tongue up to the front teeth test ?

      Have them watch this lecture. Most doctors don't seem to care or notice anything about a tongue tie or tongue restriction. Especially if it's a less obvious posterior tongue-tie. ua-cam.com/video/nIW3884oj1o/v-deo.html

      Hello, the best thing would be to find a provider locally who can help you. There is a provider in the UAE who could help as well that would be much closer than us. tonguetieprofessionals.org/padmini-chiyadu/ is her information. Hope this is helpful. Sorry we do not have a Turkish translation of our Tongue-Tied book. -Dr. Baxter

    my baby had surgery a week and a half ago the thing is that it doesn't hurt at all when he sucks but I see that he has suction pearls on his lips he gets stuck with the milk he lets milk fall from the corner of his lips it sticks and takes off and cries a lot has a lot of hiccups and gas has explosive poop and the worst thing is that it feels very weak suction. his suction is very soft and uncoordinated and as if that were not enough, although he breastfeeds terrible, he does not want a bottle and it is just as frustrating for him to take from the bottle as from the breast

      You need to make sure that whoever did the procedure did a full release of the tongue and checked (and likely released) the lip if it was restricted. Make sure you are following the team approach to care and have followed up with a lactation consultant, bodyworker (PT, chiro), and follow up with the tongue-tie release provider to voice your concerns. They can help you from there.
