  • A full release of a restricted tongue can have far-reaching results as these moms share. Many of these patients had struggled for months and other healthcare providers told them there "is no tongue-tie" when in fact that was the exact reason for their symptoms. My story is that I am a dental hygienist that is seeing patients of all ages and I repeatedly see patients who are tongue-tied and are unaware. Thank you for sharing this valuable information! I highly recommend your book Tongue-Tied!

I would love to hear their stories about the recovery portion and the parents role in this.

Hi Naomi, it is variable for each patient. Most of the time it’s sore for a day or two but most kids with some Tylenol and / or Motrin honestly “act like nothing happened” when I call to check on them at night. The stretches to prevent the tongue tie from growing back together, done twice a day for three weeks is the hardest part. But it’s only about 10 seconds twice a day, so the child will cry and then typically calm down quickly. If you’d like to schedule a consult with us, you can call the office at 205-419-4333. Thanks! All of these babies made suck training after the intervention? I saw no improvements in 2 months after the procedure

Hello, for improvement to happen, there has to be a full release of the tongue-tie (not just a snip or clip with scissors), aftercare stretches must be performed for at least three weeks, for babies we recommend 4 times a day. And there needs to be follow up with the provider to ensure it's not reattaching. Lastly, and most importantly, the team approach has to be taken into consideration, so work with a lactation consultant before and after the release to help with suck training, rehabilitation, positioning, etc. as well as a bodyworker like a chiropractor, PT, etc. before and after the release. If any of these steps are left out, the outcome can be not what parents are hoping for, and can leave issues remaining for babies and children. Hope this helps. -Dr. Baxter

my baby had surgery a week and a half ago the thing is that it doesn't hurt at all when he sucks but I see that he has suction pearls on his lips he gets stuck with the milk he lets milk fall from the corner of his lips it sticks and takes off and cries a lot has a lot of hiccups and gas has explosive poop and the worst thing is that it feels very weak suction. his suction is very soft and uncoordinated and as if that were not enough, although he breastfeeds terrible, he does not want a bottle and it is just as frustrating for him to take from the bottle as from the breast

You need to make sure that whoever did the procedure did a full release of the tongue and checked (and likely released) the lip if it was restricted. Make sure you are following the team approach to care and have followed up with a lactation consultant, bodyworker (PT, chiro), and follow up with the tongue-tie release provider to voice your concerns. They can help you from there.
