Mounting 12V motors in Carrera's 18V 1/24 cars
I've been running 1/24 Carrera cars for almost 20yrs now. I converted the motors as soon as I got them because at the time I was running 1/32 cars with the 13.8V wall-wart and I didn't want to spend the money for a new power supply so in went the $6 motors. All these years later I still convert my motors even though I have an adjustable power supply.
The reason being is that there is so much more adjust ability with the 12V motors. I keep my track set at 17V, the reason being is that with all the digital accessories I don't want to take a chance with malfunctioning lane changers because of lower voltage.
So with the track set at 17V I can turn down each cars voltage with the CU. Each car is individually set and the run anywhere from 15% power up to 40% depending on the motor I have in it. Anyone familiar with Carrera knows that the cars speed and brake settings remain on the cars chip so once it's set you don't have to worry about it again. So the motors never see 17V, the chip cuts the power down before it gets to the motor.
Very easy to convert over. Give it a shot.

Carrera track opening for the season
Переглядів 621Рік тому
The track only gets used in the winter months so it sits unused for about 7-8 months. Needless to say with an open basement it gets pretty dirty during that time. Using the terry cloth towel on the handle and window cleaner makes short work of the cleaning. It takes longer to wipe the Inox on the rails. LOL. I do run the cars in Ghostcar mode (or just run laps) with Inox on the braids to get a ...
Part 3 Carrera D124 BMW Tuning

Final video. This car was actually a challenge compared to most I do. There were a couple of things I had to check and re-do. When I initially finished it, I ran just the chassis and the car screamed. I was really impressed with it. The only issue I had is there was a noise I can best described as thumping. I know it's not the tires and I'm thinking it is the motor. Most motors are smooth when ...

Here everything is taken apart. The front tires will be addressed but I don't necessarily true them. Trueing rubber tires is not my favorite thing to do so I just basically check to see if they are close to being round. IF a tire is way out of round I will go and true them. The motor I put in these cars is what I happen to have on the shelf at the time. I probably have about 10 different motors...

      @dw5555 10 місяців тому

      It's really not a question of speed believe it or not. It's about adjust ability. I did a write up years ago comparing different motors I use and included the stock 18V motor for comparison. Turning down the 12V motors and running the 18V motor at 100%, the 18V motor was running close to the 12V motor times. However......There was no room to make the cars faster. With the 12V motors I run my track at a 17V constant to keep the electronics happy, but the cars are run at 10% to 40% power setting at the CU depending on the motor. That also means that with those power settings I can make the cars run faster if need be. I try to adjust my cars to run close to the same times on the track for when visitors come over they can run semi close together.

    Exactly what I was looking for, thanks! Question, I've been having lots of trouble with the press in style of contacts, and think I'm going to opt for lacing a length of braid through the openings that the current spring loaded braids press into. Maybe add a drop of solder, maybe not. So feed the braid up through the trailing opening, over and back down the front opening then trim. This way the darn things won't pop out almost every time the car spins out in a curve. What do you think? I've tried it for proof of concept and seems to work fine, with a potential need to improve contact inside where wires are soldered. I have some thoughts on that to avoid soldering the braid.

    • @dw5555
      @dw5555 Рік тому

      I don't understand why your braids are popping out. Is your guide moving around or popping out and hitting the braid? I have had that happen before and I replaced the guide with a Frankenslot guide and that solved that issue. Putting the braid thru the guide holes seems kinda drastic but I do want to thank you, you've just given me a new video idea about the braids. 😀

    • @BShady58

      @dw5555 haha, hsppy to have inspired content! Yeah, I've 4 cars cuz I bought 2 od same sets, so I will try to make a bit of a photo study for you. What happens nearly every spin out, is the factory guide pops out, usually stays in place but not always. Sometimes it's completely out on the track. If it didn't pop completely out, I need to just press it back in, then check the contacts. Sometimes it's just straighten em out, but at the very least every couple or three spins it actually pulls one or both ends completely or partially out. I can press them back in maybe once or twice at most, before they need to completely removed, spead the little spring contact out again, and get it in proper shape to be reinserted. This happens often. Can't get more than half a dozen laps in with any kind of aggression at all. Yeah, I need to need to learn how to drive without spin outs, but until the. This is a real pain. I've modified on rocker, didn't have any official braid, but I did have some solder wick so I used that lol. Working well actually for the braid part of this. I also have the frankenslots coming when Santa gets here lol. Meanwhile maybe I just have to dial the speed down to ensure fewer spin outs.

      You didn't say where the dead spot was is comparison to the 2nd lane gate. I will say this, it is VERY EASY to mess up which tab to pull out to create the dead spot when your looking at it upside down. (Of course making sure your connections are correct when you hooked up the lane gate itself) With a dead spot you obviously have no power so IF you did not pull the wrong tab out of the track, check and make sure your track connections else ware are ok. Since I messed up putting a couple of mine in (Pulling out the wrong tabs mainly) I would install the gate and before putting the track all back together I would leave the track disconnected at the dead strip end and check the function. The track will still function not connected..

      I tryed a few different things. First time track was dead all the way between the two changers. 1st changer is one lane . 2nd changer is 2 lane. I pulled both pins on double changer . Pins meaning pin that connect the two track peices together. One time i put jumper wire to the dead track. That mad the 2nd not change lanes. My first question would be, do you have to do anything different on the second changer like useing power jumper? If not then the first one worked so the mistake should be on the 2nd changer? Do i pull both pins on the piece leading into the piece before the changer so it sees the car one piece before changer. Thats what i did.i pulled it apart and bouble checked every thing. So does one hook up same whether you run 2 or 3 anti changers ? Sorry for long text. I thank you

    Why do you change the 124 motor out?

    • @dw5555

      Long story. This started about eight years or so ago when I bought my first 1/24 car. Since the 124 cars are 18 volt motors I changed it to the 12-volt 132 motor so I could run it with the 1/32 cars I already had and I. wouldn't have to change the power supply. I didn't plan on running 1/24 cars but changed the motors after adding a few more and fell in love with the 1/24s. The 12v motors offer more flexibility as you can get them in any configuration you want. The 18v motors you're limited to just a couple of options.

    Hello, one question, is it necessary to use sandpaper on the Paul Gage tires to use them on the digital race tracks 132 or 124 cars?

    • @dw5555
      @dw5555 Рік тому

      No you can see the difference just slipping them on you don't have to true the tires. However that being said you will notice a difference if you do true the tires.

    • @dw5555
      @dw5555 Рік тому

      Not sure what you're asking Tom. This is a single lane changer. Any Pro-X lane changer will function the same way on a D132 track. As soon as the car drives over the sensor the lane changer will open without pressing the lane changer button so the next car behind it will change lanes.

      @@dw5555 Please disregard my question. I confused myself. I was more focused on the function and application rather than the track section you were demonstrating. When I wrote the question I was think Pit Lane changer. 6 of one 1/2 dozen of the other. Thanks for your reply.

      Eugene in my experience Carrera 1/24 cars run better with the fronts running on the track. I tried with a couple of cars setting them up with the tri-pod experience and they didn't run as well. Plus the weight of the cars caused the braid to wear out prematurely just running on the guide.

    What voltage do you run the motor? I replaced a few Carrera motors with the drop in replacement RMS 124 motor running between 13-14 volts but was having issues with the pit lane gate not opening on only those motors. I swapped them back out for stock motors between 18-19 volts and the pit lane gate works fine. I'm not sure if maybe there wasn't enough voltage going in and causing the gate issue but no more problems with the stock motor.

    • @dw5555
      @dw5555 Рік тому

      Jay I am using an adjustable power supply and I always run my track at 17v and leave it there for exactly that reason. Sometimes the electronics don't work reliably at the lower voltages. I always use the CU to adjust the motor speed. I have a couple of those RMS motors and they are beasts. At 17v track voltage I think I run at 15-20% CU setting.
