    I hope this video is pushed by the algorithm and more people see it. I agree with you -- the tech industry as a whole is changed forever and it is no longer a vehicle for upward mobility towards a better life. You could put the same effort and grit into another industry and likely get farther comparatively in tech's current state. All the people that got the MCSA back in the day were guaranteed a job, those days are gone. I would also feel grateful if I was in your shoes.

    One thing I think schools should prepare kids to be entrepreneurial instead of just workers. After a certain age you should learn enough skills in your job to either be working for yourself or have your own business of some kind.

    • @HopeToProsper
      @HopeToProsper 13 днів тому

      I completely agree with you. From what I understand, public schools were specifically created to teach people to be effective workers during the Industrial Revolution. It seems like the government is also trying to discourage small businesses and entrepreneurs, which is a shame. That is where the growth and innovation comes from.

    • @HopeToProsper
      @HopeToProsper 14 днів тому

      Yes, I have been using Covered California since I retired last year. The first year, I paid a lot, because I was coming off a really high paying year in my career. But I got a lot of it back when I did my taxes and hadn't made that much. This year, I pay less, because I make a lot less. Covered Cali has been pretty good overall, but they tend to shift my plans and providers around. It's a lot less than trying to pay for insurance out of pocket.

    Just came across your channel today and great timing. Am 57 tomorrow, laid off from 40 year UK career in tech management 3 months ago, all the stress you’ve mentioned in other videos. The UK market for tech jobs seems 100% like the US, thought finding a new job would be easy, but am definitely feeling like the old tech guy in applications, and when the odd thing comes through I think back to the 24x7 on call stress, just not feeling the hunger for it any more, and I can get by but not rich by any means. It’s a weird place I wasn’t prepared for. I saw another video with a 10 x 8 grid of circles, each is a year of your life up to 80 (if you’re lucky) and colour in every year you’ve had so far, it helped me visualise the value of time - and also helped stop focussing on all the expensive mistakes from the past. Anyway - great channel.

    It’s a smart call that if you were smart enough to save for retirement you will be smart enough to pivot and adjust the plan as you go. My transition from working a job to self employment was very similar. I had started farming on the side two years earlier when the company that I had been with for ten years called me in and laid me off. They gave me about $10 k in severance and I signed up for unemployment. Like you I didn’t feel bad about it. I had never pulled a penny out of my farming operation and I wasn’t sure if I could support my family on it. After I was offered a couple of jobs I realized that I just didn’t have time to work for anyone else. The severance and unemployment made it the softest landing ever. Great video 👍🏼

Plus its the never ending learning, throwing the R script books into the bin and going to leave the corporate world to learn a trade.
