I think this video has some of the most solid, well thought out advice out of all of your videos and most of the others on UA-cam. This is not to throw shade on any of your other videos, it’s just that this one is packed with great content.
Interesting how when we retire we are suddenly a lot more interested in reducing the volatility of our investments. I also plan on taking my SS at 67 or 68. My family typically doesn’t live long enough to see the national average and I did a lot of damage to my body chasing the dollar. I still have a lot of time to decide so we’ll see what happens. You are also correct that it’s a personal decision and you probably shouldn’t listen to anyone else.
    Great job 👏🏼 👏🏼

Thanks a bunch Failure. Like you, I watch a lot of retirement videos and I hate when the Gurus say, "You have to do this or that". They call it Personal Finance for a reason. Everyone's circumstances are different and these decisions are personal. I'm hoping to live to be older, but who knows. My family history isn't so great. I'm also going to take my Social Security at 67 or maybe later, depending on if I need the income.

Great content. We would almost add physical health into that list as that will determine how your retirement would go... and could really eat into your funds if major medical bills arose.

That's a great point. I have invested a lot of time and energy into improving my health lately and the payback is so worth it. Not only am I hoping to avoid expensive health costs, I'm hoping to keep adventuring for as long as possible. Thanks for your comment.

Hi Bret great video, love all the info. One question about your portfolio. Did you change your asset allocation? Did you change it before you retired? Are you a 60/40 guy 70/30 50/50? Just curious how you went about that as I’m planning to retire early in 2 years. Thanks !! Keep up the awesome videos.

Hey Dan, I'm really glad you liked this video. I thought it had a lot of great information, but it didn't get a lot of views, so thanks for letting me know.
Most of my portfolio is in stock or stock mutual funds. I have been investing for almost 40 years and I'm more comfortable with risk than most people. About five years before I retired, I started putting most of my new 401K contributions into a 2030 Target Date fund. I figured they could manage the asset allocation dynamically, as I aged and approached retirement. Now that I am retired, I am taking a risky bet on this year being an election year and I'm letting it ride, mostly in the stock market. I do have one year of money market, to help me ride out a storm. Right now, I am studying fixed income investments. (There is a UA-camr named Armchair Income who has some investment strategies I'm interested in.) Early next year, I plan to move 20-30% of my investments into fixed income and have a 75/20/5 - 65/30/5 type portfolio. Then, I will have three buckets, instead of two.
I'm not recommending anyone else "let it ride" this year, but 20 of the last 24 election years have been positive. If I can post a solid 10-20% gain this year, I will be able to increase my withdrawals for retirement and take some risk off the table. Just let me know if you have any questions. Bret
