Nearly 23 years ago. I traded a 2000 Ford Escort and $50. For a 95 cherokee xj country. Been driving it nearly everyday since. Over the years, I've rebuilt the 4.0, the transaxle, and replaced the radiator, water pump, and power steering pump. upgraded the e-fan with a one from a zj. (more fan blades) and replaced the fuel pump with the bosch pump. I've driven that thing all over the western United states. And pulled vintage travel trailers and cargo trailers loaded down with firewood, or furniture. The only way I'll ever give up that old beast would be via a horribly destructive accident or my children prying my aging, arthritic fingers from the steering wheel. (edited to fix bad grammar)

The spring in the lower radiator hose is supposedly from when they were made in the factory and filled the cooling system using vacuum. Since we also have a slight overpressure in a normal cooling system and we hopefully have correct hose without kinks it should be fine without. Need to check out the crossdrilling since I see quite a few using the old soup can oil catch can mod. Cheers from scandinavia/northern europe from fellow cherokee xj lover (you got an extra subscriber)

Other potential issues are failing door opening mechanisms/pushbuttons, constant minor oil leaks everywhere, flex plates getting loose. If you like to run around on empty you will burn up your fuel pump. The rear wiper sprayer mechanism will fail. Trans mount needs replacement at 200k. Never acquire an XJ with a bad heater core. If you never have to replace your engine or transmission you're most expensive maintenance is going to be the suspension.

@@davidtrevino5211 no. They’re not superior to the 3rd gen 4Runner at all. Toyota is definitely way more reliable and comfortable than the xj of this era. The 4Runner is built in Japan , jeep xj in Ohio. Come on man !

I agree love my 2 XJs , but the toyotas just feel like they're more durable.. Even the interior seems like it's sturdier and doesn't fall apart as quickly.. Not to mention all the electronics windows/locks/ rear window in the 3rd gen still work like new.. My Xjs and one ZJ I own electric windows work sporadically at best.. Great Video, one the most informative on XJs that I've viewed, and I've viewed alot.. Keep up the great work.....

@@davidtrevino5211 I’d still take an XJ over a 4R any day for a weekender. If well kept , the XJ really can ride very smooth and quiet. TBH a lot of folks just don’t have time for broken shit. That’s exactly why I daily Toyota/lexus vehicles. I always shoot for vehicles made straight in Japan : 4R , LX570 , LX470 , ls430 and so on. The single greatest point of failure in these vehicles were the maintenance of the owners. I bought mine for $500. I added: Stainless brake lines, stainless clutch master cyl line, *metal* clutch slave and master cyl, Hd clutch, a ZJ fuel line to the rail, stainless fuel rail, ev6 injectors, hv fuel pump, water pump with a backing plate, copper brass radiator, adjustable track bar, battery cable upgrade, headlight relay harness, cooling fan ctrl relay. For the rest I use zinc oil additive. This thing is at 375k miles.

I have a 96 Cherokee (XJ) - pulled engine a couple months ago - got bored and sleeved - re-installed and I can't get it to start - it turns over - attempts to start (maybe 1 second) but then sounds like it is being "shutoff" - just stops. Have tested and even replaced ASD, replaced CPS, etc. but I don't know what else to check. ANY IDEAS ??? Thanks for this overview video.

A white pearl 2017 with 80,000 miles as well. I have every option you have except I don’t have the phone charger and I also had a 200 series and a 100 series. I’m gonna be honest I absolutely love all of the upgrades, but I do feel like it’s lesser quality stuff. For instance, the front seats the leather doesn’t feel as good as the 100 series for sure. Just the touches and feel the door when I slammed the door. It feels cheaper than it used to in my 200 series overall the right quality is way better but that’s to me just because it’s newer newer suspension parts. I did feel like the earlier 200 series my 2010 needed some suspension work, but overall it was way more floater or softer although this is just a perfect ride it has no negatives. It’s just perfect. I also noticed when you hit 65 I don’t feel that lowering effect that I feel on the 2010.

Great video Man really enjoyed watching really informative. I’ve owned my 96 for around six months now and it came with its fair share of issues. Day 1-overheated when I tried driving it Home turned out to be a bad thermostat. I’d also like to add this car has been sitting for round three years before my ownership. Next thing was the heater valve. Then the blower motor. AC worked thank god! Brake calliper seized up on my front driver side. Fuel line split at the rear. Now my radio antenna is stuck up which all things considered isn’t a big deal. Also someone put the wrong fuel cap on and when driving had a strong smell. Had to chase the smell from front to back thinking it was a leaking injector or something, turned out to be simple as a bad fuel cap. All is done now hopefully nothing big will need doing for a long while, but I’m always looking under the hood and under the car checking!
