Nicky walks around the ONLY Ford RS200 Group S owned by Ford Motorsport Chief Engineer John Wheeler
Welcome back to the Nicky Grist Motorsports channel. We spoke to John Wheeler earlier this year about his work for Ford Motorsport and his involvement with the development of the RS1700T, RS200 & Escort RS Cosworth.
At Eifel Rallye 2024, we got the chance to do a walkaround tour of John's one of a kind Group S RS200 which he used at the event!
So, what is "Group S"?
Group S rallying was a planned category for rally cars in the World Rally Championship (WRC) that never materialised. It was designed to replace the notorious Group B category, which was banned after 1986 due to a series of fatal accidents involving both drivers and spectators. Group B had featured extremely powerful and lightweight cars, making them incredibly fast but also dangerously hard to control.
Group S was designed to be a safer alternative, with a focus on prototypes rather than modified production cars like in Group B. The idea was to create experimental cars that would have stricter power limits, placing a greater emphasis on innovation and technology rather than sheer horsepower.

    "Not much stock parts." Oh yes, I´ve noticed reading the FIA homologation documents and compared the pictures to my ST185CS road car. And had the chance to compare my car one to one to the Safari car from the TTE museum when lenting my car to Toyota Germany for promotion in 2012 and they parked it next to the safari car.

    What a treat, i was 14/ 15 at the time of group B and witnessed it at Donnington on the RAC , great times and still the best rally era with the best cars. The cars are quicker now and the events are shorter but the group B cars and drivers had so much more charisma.

    Great video Nicky......just to pick up on the "irish guys" not keeping it original, i would imagine nobody expected those group A cars would be so collectable in the future and were just trying to have fun rallying and keeping their cars running as long as they could within their budget...... By the time they got them they were uncompetitive and lucky to find a buyer who kept them competing..... Keep up the good work with the videos .... maybe you can use your contacts to get some more background tech from the group A era . Well done Nicky

    There's still quite some confusion around Group S as the regs where never finalised. Initially it was unrestricted (5-600bhp) Group B but with a short homologation run. When the ban came in manufactures tried to resurrect the class with 'restricted' 300bhp engines. This would have been the perfect compromise and would have opened up rallying to so many more manufactures (with competitive cars) than Group A. Vauxhall/Opel could have been competing for overall wins with their 4WD Group S Astra/Kadett which went onto be competitive in rallycross. It would have been very cool to see a Group S spec 959, the MR2 etc. This RS200 is probably to closest we have to what Group S could have been. Most of the other cars are still fitted with Group B spec engines.

    To avoid boring waffle skip to 4:10 . To avoid comments like, ah, so reducing the weight lead to greater speed, twin dampers I notice, as 2 large springs centre the screen , just skip to end of video

    On the other day I watched old VHS tape of Finnish RX 1987. There were T 16s, Metros, and RS200s.

      The RS200 and 6R4 became the most popular rallycross Group B cars as there where so many available for a relatively cheap cost. In the early days there were a few Delta S4''s and 205 T16 E2's but they where expensive to run. The RS200 E2 would have been super competitive in WRC if it had the chance to run.

    Being a Group B fan (+ well aware of Group S), I have attended the Eifel Rallye twice. Unfortunately, am not very technically minded, and did not know how to answer to John Wheeler when he asked "What do you want to know about it?". I was intimidated by his stature. Funnily, I also approached Bjorn Waldegaard for a signature referring to him as Stig. There was a moments pause whilst he and his wife gave me a long look, although Bjorn still signed my programme (RIP). I was a tad embarassed. The Eifel Rallye was, and still is, a fantastic event. The cars/liveries could be mistaken as box fresh. Therefore, hail all the enthusiasts that make this and similar events a reality for us all. With now being settled/married, revisiting for a 3rd time is unlikely. Only Group B car I never got to see in the flesh was the Delta S4 which has since made appearances at the Eifel Rallye, and so far as Group S is concerned, the MR2 (as also covered by Nicky). My most surprising spot was the Citroen BX 4TC. All in all, great and unforgettable memories.

    Timo Salonen demanded cigarette lighter to be installed to his car, and maybe Kankkunen/Piironen did too, during their Peugeot years at least haha. So it was not that uncommon back then. Also, Didier Auriol had sunglasses holder in his door too.

    Of course, we have to think of the perished crews and spectators in Group B. At least it changed the whole picture on safety, and rally cars today are about as fast or faster than Group B. But that can't stop me from thinking how I wish Group S could have at least been given a year or two, the technological advances that might have transferred over to naughty street cars would have been immeasurable! Today's rally cars might have been faster still because of it.
