He merely mentioned that others have explained the ayah in such a way while simultaneously casting doubt on these interpretations. You may ask why the Imam included that explanation while disagreeing with it. The simple answer is that the purpose of his work is to gather all the various interpretations of the Quranic verses by different people-scholars and otherwise-while providing the source of each interpretation. Some of the explanations of the verses referenced in his Tafsir were attributed to the Messenger of God himself-peace be upon him-others to his companions, those after them, and even the Jewish and Christian communities. His referencing of these explanations does not imply his agreement, nor does it mean they represent mainstream Islamic beliefs or acceptable interpretations of the verses. His work is simply an archive of reports. The story about the whale, as noted by scholars of Quranic Exegesis, originates from the Jewish and Christian traditions. Should it be applied universally without exceptions, or are there exceptions? Was the report abrogated, or does it remain applicable? These are just some of the questions that scholars address when dealing with any text. Thirdly , even if, for the sake of argument, this was a mainstream belief among Muslims and the Muslim scholarly class (which it wasn't), what is the connection between that belief and scientific progress? Can you provide any evidence that Muslims halted scientific progress because they believed the world existed on a sea creature? Some of the greatest achievements of Muslim scholars occurred from the 7th century onwards, including the codification of the sciences of algebra, logic, and medicine, philosophy and countless others. Some of the finest architecture and engineering projects-which still stand today-were completed during and after the 7th century. Clearly, your claim that beliefs like this led to the collapse of Muslim scholarly and scientific progress is completely baseless. I urge you to reconsider your stance in the video and further explore primary sources instead of regurgitating outdated orientalist tropes. You should review an article written by Turkish Scholar Recep Senturk titled "The decline of the decline paradigm: Revisiting the periodisation of Islamic history". For an interesting discussion on the idea of an 'islamic golden age'. I am happy to further discuss these points further should you care to do so.

Islam as a religion was created by the Abbasids before them there was no religion called Islam a book called the Quranic Corpus even a prophet named Muhammad and also even a city called Mecca these are all Abbasid inventions before them there was only a sub-sect of judeo christianity that was non-trinitarian and pre-Nicene the Quranic corpus originally was a collection of biblical exegesis compiled into one book by Abdal al-Malik this Bible was different it didnt have all the embarrassing stories that the bible we know has and it also had extra accounts and stories and was used by this particular sub-sect of Christianity. Everything we know about Islam comes mainly from Abbasid sources written 200 years after the events described and it's based on a very different historical past than what we know. There was no Rashiddun caliphate or an Islamic state in Medina from 622 CE to 661 CE instead what happened was that after the Byzantine Sassanid war both empires were weakend and the Sassanid empire collapsed into small warlords meanwhile the Ghassanids and the Lakhamids and there allies decided to attack the weakend Byzantine and took Levant and Egypt these Arab rulers were mainly Monophysite Christians, Nestorians, Polytheists and Jewish sects there was no Islam as this point later in 658 CE Muawiyah a Monophysite christian would unite the Arabs of Syria by forming the Ummayad state then he would expand into Levant and Egypt his main rival was Ali ibn Talib a Nestorian christian king of Lakhmid kingdom both were trying to unite the divided Arabs under one banner but eventualy Muawiyah came victorious and united all the Arabs states under his banner but he died in 681 CE and after him Abdal al Malik came to power under his reign the Dome of the rock was built praising Jesus as the christ since he was a non trinitarian christian he was also the one who gathered many biblical exegesis and made into a book form and added diacrtic marks onto it this would later slowley evolve into the Quranic corpus that we know today but back then it wasnt seens as a devine revalation it was seen more as human interpreation and commentary on their Syraic aramaic bible prone to error and speculative written by monks and preists belonging to the sub sect. All rulers after Abdal al-Malik were also part of the same sub-sect of Christianity that he was part of, in fact, this Judeo Christianity that was non-trinitarian and was influenced heavily by Manicheanism and Marcionism was the state religion of the Ummayad caliphate but when the Abbasids came to power they created the prophet Muhammad and the entire religion of Islam as we know it today it was made the state religion of the Abbasid caliphate by 850 CE and by 1000 CE it was complete and it began to spread rapidly across the world. Before the Abbasids there was no Kaaba shrine or black stone or the tomb of the prophet or even a city called Mecca there may have been a stopping caravan station with at least 1000 Monophysite Christian population but that was the only population and people may have seen this site as the place where Hagar and Ishmael lived so in the Ummayad period they would have performed pilgrimage in Hijaz. We know that Arabia in the 7th century was not polytheist and Christianity was rapidly growing in Arabia there is no evidence of a tribe called the Quraysh but we do know a tribe called the Maa'd tribe but they were Monophysite Christians. The Muhammad mentioned in the Quranic corpus is another title for Jesus. There were many different groups in the early days of this new religion who had disagreements and fabricated hadiths and interpolated certain passages of the Quranic corpus and even created there own traditions.
