Join me as I attempt to navigate the trials and tribulations of Obstructive Sleep Apnea and CPAP therapy. Hi, Impact!
I Tried to Drain-Weasel My Dad's DreamStation CPAP. It Didn't Go Well
My dad asked me if I would Drain Weasel his DreamStation so he can use it as a backup. And... well, it didn't go as planned.
If you're not familiar with the Drain Weasel method of de-foaming the DS1, I learned about it from Howard Morland's UA-cam channel, so be sure to give him a visit and all due credit:
ua-cam.com/video/b6t-ws_Sn2A/v-deo.html&ab_channel=HowardMorland
If you want to try Drain Weaseling your own DreamStation, you can find the product on Amazon: amzn.to/3oTguwo
Or if you want to skip the dirty work and just buy an empty, foam-free motor housing, you can get those, too: amzn.to/3dLPg4L

Dirty ResMed 30i QuietAir Vent? Try This Cheap DIY Fix

After two additional surgeries to try and repair my anal fistula, I'm back at square one. So it's going to be a while before I can sit down and record the sorts of CPAP advice videos I normally make. Heck, I'll be fortunate if I can sit again by Christmas. But I wanted to show y'all this ingenious little CPAP hack that a member of the CPAP Reviews Facebook page whipped up. Sheldon figured out (...
A Tale of Two Sleep Doctors (with regard to OSCAR)
Переглядів 2,1 тис.3 роки тому
Sorry for the lack of new videos these past few weeks. My butt tried to kill me again and I ended up having emergency surgery to repair a fistula and drain an abscess. So I'm gonna be wobbly for a while. I had a great visit with my new sleep doctor today, though! I fired the old one over some huge red flags. But what I'm here to talk about today is the drastically different reactions they had t...

Trying to Deep Clean Your ResMed Water Reservoir? Take It Apart First!
Переглядів 29 тис.3 роки тому
Since ditching my Philips #FoamGate CPAP about six weeks ago and switching to an AirSense 10, I've come to appreciate what a superior machine the ResMed is in practically every meaningful way. But soaking the humidifier reservoir has been a struggle! Or, at least it was until I discovered this stupidly simple trick. Now, I can not only soak my reservoir using half the water; I can also do a muc...
Check Your Spam for #Foamgate "Update" from Philips

Philips (well, not actually Philips, but rather Sedgwick, the company handling the recall of #Foamgate devices) finally sent the confirmation emails that we should have received back in June. The full text of the email reads as follows: "Thank you again for taking the time to register your device, ensuring that your information is in our system. As a reminder, your confirmation number is: 20210...
5 Things I Wish I'd Known About CPAP Masks from the Get-Go
Переглядів 537 тис.3 роки тому
I'm still getting the hang of this whole CPAP thing, but in the six months since I started therapy, I've learned SO MUCH about masks that I wish someone had told me before I started a symbiotic relationship with one. The most important things I wish I had known: 1) Masks come in all shapes and sizes, and what works for one person won't work for another. 2) If you hate the first mask you're pres...
See What Happens When You Don't Clean Your CPAP?

Even though I recently purchased and refurbished a ResMed AirSense 10 that was used in a hospital and purchased at a medical auction (see more on that at ua-cam.com/video/ME7W1u1wgsU/v-deo.html), I started to worry about what would happen if it broke down. Having a lifeline like this that isn't protected by a warranty is kinda scary. So I've been on the hunt for damaged AirSense 10s that I coul...
The DreamStation 2 is a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad CPAP
Переглядів 26 тис.3 роки тому
Right now, some people have no choice but to accept and purchase a Philips DreamStation 2 when being prescribed CPAP. Rumor has it that the company is also going to be replacing at least some original DreamStation PAP devices affected by the #foamgate recall with this new machine. This is an outrage. The DreamStation 2 is a horrible piece of medical equipment. It's poorly designed, cheaply made...

Trying to replace your Philips #Foamgate CPAP? Don't get scammed like I did.

Since Philips released the recall notification four weeks ago and told us to stop using our CPAPs, APAPs, BiPAPs, ASVs, and other flow regulators, we haven't gotten any additional information. But they have sent a letter to doctors spelling out some dangers that they're not revealing to patients, including: "Lab testing performed for and by Philips has also identified the presence of VOCs which...
The Easiest Way to Keep Your CPAP Gear Clean & Dry
Переглядів 82 тис.3 роки тому
I finally talked my dad into ditching his SoClean ozone cleaner, but he wasn't looking forward to washing his CPAP equipment by hand now. So I walked him through my process. It's easy! 5 simple steps once a week, and it only takes about five active minutes of cleaning and an hour-and-a-half of doing whatever else you wanna do. 1) Load your gear into a plastic kitchen basin and bring it to the s...
5(ish) Shocking Ways CPAP Fixed My Life (and Maybe My Butt?)
Переглядів 31 тис.3 роки тому
We think of Obstructive Sleep Apnea as a condition that affects the heart and lungs. But I was diagnosed with OSA because my butt kept trying to kill me. And now there's some evidence that CPAP might be lowering the inflammation that destroyed my gastrointestinal tract. More testing needs to be done, but that's the current working hypothesis! More information on the link between sleep apnea and...
My Philips CPAP Saved My Life... Now It Might Be Killing Me?!
Переглядів 3,3 тис.3 роки тому
Welcome to my Adventures with CPAP! In this first episode, I discuss the Philips recall affecting many of the company's CPAP, APAP, BiPAP, and ventilator machines. More info on that is available at: www.usa.philips.com/healthcare/e/sleep/communications/src-update and www.reuters.com/business/healthcare-pharmaceuticals/philips-recalls-some-3-4-million-cpap-ventilator-machines-due-foam-part-2021-...
I'm with your wife exactly. But need to keep my mouth shut suddenly, wasn't ever a problem before. Will try "mewing." Or a homemade chin strap. (Headband?) My mask is a s/m (4th size?) The hard piece on the nasal pillow smashed the tip of my nose.
just found your channel! thank you! my DME rented me a dreamstation 1 without mentionning the recall... I'll have to ask if they knew. They did not know about Oscar or SleepHQ's detailed reading software. They didn't even know you could turn off the cellular modem! (I wanted it off because I don't wanna sleep in more radiation) But I discovered that even when you turn off the modem, it quietly turns itself back on without telling you a day or two later.... you're absolutely right: we are not Philips' client. (oh wait that was from your Dreamstation 2 review video...) anyway thank you! following!
You did a good job. But as a female, need to find a place to get the inside of my machine service and clean, totally reeks and stinks so bad
Meow! 😹
Low oxygen stops the body from healing. The brain doesn’t function properly and the mitochondria won’t fire. Try to stay away from dairy and wheat for the gut. Sugar is also not anyone’s friend even fruit. Only berries and apples low sugar fruits. Don’t eat late at night when the body is sweeping the body of excess junk it doesn’t need. Take care love to all❤️
I just can't sleep with only nose breathing for the most part but the part under the nose that cuts you is ridiculous! I run the full face mask, it does the job and doesn't leak for me but I put a small piece of that brown bandage tape under my nose to protect the skin. The problem also with the full face phillips mask is that for me that pushes on the sides of nose further restricting nose breathing. It's a tough thing to get used to.
Thank you for your kindness and help with this. I have just got a hybrid nose and mouth mask. It’s been leaking quite a bit even different sizes, so will see if I can get them to send me a nasal pillow, as this is how I breath most of the time. Ps, have you thought about doing relaxing audiobooks? Just saying!! lol 😝 Best, Quintin
Thank you. What works for one person doesn’t work for another. Excellent help. 🙏❤️
Use 2 cups of vinegar to 1 cup water, 20 years and counting
Wow man… first video of yours and this is so moving . I just got on Cpap this week. I’ve also had very poor memory all my life, have always heard complaints about my snoring and just overall fatigue . This is inspiring me to continue
Great video! Thank you so much!
Where did you get that antibacterial filter, never seen one in my 20 years of use?
I had a sleep test and it is EXTREMELY severe. Oxygen levels down to 42% and at one point during the study I had 310 events in an hour! Extremely URGENT to start therapy IMMEDIATELY so I was told. It's now 3 weeks later and the medical supply still hasn't gotten the prescription for the device because insurance said I needed additional testing....so I wait....and wait....and wait.
The whole cpap business is a money making exercise. The prices they charge for a simple nasal pillow is outrageous.
I was just given my first mask, and it is the Philips ridged pillow kind that you like. It seals well and feels fine. The problem I have with it is exhaling. Even with low pressure, I have to do a lot of work to exhale through my nose. Maybe I will get used to it?
Yeah, that happens a lot when you're getting used to CPAP. I have a breathing technique that works, and I need to make a video about it once I get back to filming again (soon, I promise!). Here's my best attempt at describing it in text, though. The problem is, your body is wanting to get rid of CO2 and the constant positive air pressure is creating resistance to that. What you need to do is slow your breathing down and relax, so your body is getting rid of less CO2. What I do is, if I have to get up in the middle of the night for a wee, when I go back to bed and put on my CPAP, I'll inhale through my nose (through the nasal pillows) and exhale vigorously through my mouth (since there's nothing to block the exhalation). About a minute of this and my heart will have slowed down enough and my need to exhale CO2 will have leveled off enough that I can now exhale through the constant air pressure coming into my nose. Lemme know if that helps or if I need to describe it better!
@@AdventureswithCPAP Thanks! I needed a strategy. I will try that.
Thank You! I have a question.....I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea about 14 years ago. I have a resmed 10 machine. I used it on and off for about two years.I went from a full face mask to a nose mask and then a pillow....then back to full! I couldn't deal with it and put it away for about 3 years. Only took it out when sleeping over relatives houses. My wife said I snore like crazy.......now we sleep apart. She has it also but won't get it checked out! Tried again for a week.....no good! Put it away for about 7-8 years. Have been taping my mouth....I wake up many times and always with a dry mouth! Want to try again, maybe with a different mask setup. I am closing in on 70 yrs old. My question is (finally), can I still use this machine? Even though it is over 10 years old, it has low mileage/usage. I have cleaned it thoroughly, and would buy new hose (heated) and new mask. It has been in it's case in air conditioning it's whole life. When using, always kept it clean, and always used distilled water. Am told nothing to clean inside of machine, I am the only user and was never subjected to anything outside and always in a/c. Look forward to your reply!
I see absolutely no reason why you can't use it! Like you said: new hose, new mask, new filters, and you should be fine!
I primarily breathe through my nose so they started me out with the gels I hated the two gel nasal mask they tore my face up to I ended up using the single nasal pillow which goes over both your nostrils but mine had a little divider in the center making it much more comfortable than the one of the singles slit in it it took a while for my nosy get used to it a couple weeks but after that and now it's super comfy! The first one just absolutely sucked for me cuz I have a beard as well obviously from my picture mine is a single silicone nasal pillow with a thin strip silicone divider in the very center it literally feels super comfortable against your nose I haven't tried the one you're trying that exact shape but mine's basically the same idea just with no bumps mine is also a ResMed airsense 10 with a Airfit N30i nasal pillow.
looks like mine up till 2 days ago when i replaced the motor and cleaned the hole sys do to hrs on motor
Loved it
In my 10th year with "that damned thing" and still learning how to live with it. Thanks for this video, I will try again to find the right mask for myself. 👍X 100
Should you wash it with distilled water? I mean if reg water has minerals and other stuff in it; wouldn't that make more sense (no pun intended)!
I was like.... (In the words of Martin)...you go boy! I have the air sense 11!
Just found out at 29 (30) failed keeping it on and keeping a 19 day record a month. Mainly because I wake up with a dry ass mouth and work odd hours so I'd get home tired as shit and not put it on. Purely my own fault and now I gotta wait 3 months to get a new one. After the sleep study though I realized I've been walking around half awake with no energy since my early teens.
Next time, double bag the motor in a sealled food bag with the alcohol and a couple of cotton buds inside. Once sealed you can then use the cotton buds while it is flooded with alcohol without having to waste loads flushing it repeatedly.
SENSIBLE, FUNNY AND GOOD INFO. THANKS.
My God! I’m sitting here and my heart is hurting hearing what you’ve went through. The memory loss! I can’t remember sooooo much 💔💔💔 I pray we get it back!
This was an absolutely and incredible story to hear and see. Thank you for sharing! I hope it will help me on my apnea journey
In addition to fixing my extreme apnea problem, my reflux stopped immediately with CPAP. By the way, my sleep lab set my CPAP pressure at 22 cm, which is wicked high. I couldn't use CPAP at that pressure. I think the mask was leaking during the test and they cranked the pressure up to compensate. I found a nose mask that tapes to the nose and doesn't leak and was able to cut the pressure down by half. If you're having mask leaks, try all kinds of different brands.
WQW, I learned so much in this video. Thank you so much.. I'm on my first mask and it isnt perfect for my tendency to sidesleep. I now know I can try different options!
Let me know if you need any guidance on that!
New subscriber here. I’m so happy I found your channel. I’ve suffered from sleep apnea for many years and I was worried it might kill me. My Doctor ordered the at home test equipment and I just finished sleeping with this equipment and have mailed it back and Im waiting for the results. I know I have sleep apnea but the insurance wants proof before I can the CPAP . I’ve been watching your videos to educate myself and they’ve been very helpful . Thank you
Thank you so much! And good timing! I'm finally over almost all of my medical woes and plan to start shooting new videos again soon!
Very helpful video you are a star thank you
i just got an aircurve 10 with smoke smell in it. i'm thinking the whole motor assembly/unit would need to be replaced as well. well done on the video.
I really don't trust traditional doctors for the most part. They don't listen and only want to treat symptoms.
I didn’t know the reservoir came apart! Doh! Much better! Thank you. 😊
I feel sick 🤢
I'm using the ResMed AirFit P10 Pillow mask. From what I see, the mask-inside-the-mask keeps it full of air to keep it in contact with your nostrils. I was given this mask to try after using a full face mask for years. At the 2nd sleep study the tech recommended the P10 as he saw the one I'd been using leaked, and the P10 is great for anyone with a beard - and it is great. The CPAP machine I'm using now, the ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet, has an App that scores you on how well the mask seals, and more.
Great job Dennis! Yes, your candid breakdown was just what I needed. Thank you
I am on my 2nd hand me down CPAP. Yeah I know it's horrible to not have been to a sleep study but hey my dad died from not using his CPAP so I don't really care what Anyone thinks .. anyway I just got a resmed airsense 10 and it has a heated hose and smart start! I feel like I went from a yugo to a rolls Royce!
Those gel pillows are absolutely perfect for me! When they were discontinued, I went on a mission to buy every single one I could find in my size. I've got a stockpile that should last me my lifetime. Then I got worried they might discontinue the whole dreamwear system...so now I've got stockpiles of ALL the parts! 😂
If I hadn't thrown away all of the ones I'd bought, I'd give 'em to you! The main thing is, I'm so glad you found something that works for you!
Man oh man... anyone who has been using a CPAP machine for any length of time watching this video is probably gagging as they see all of that dust and garbage in there.
THANK YOU!
Thank you so much for making this video. I wish that every person diagnosed with sleep apnea could see this. You provide so much information and in such a pleasant way. CPAP therapy carries a stigma and I feel like you just make it seem normal and matter-of-fact. This is exactly what newly diagnosed individuals need when starting therapy can feel very overwhelming.
You just made my day! <3
@@AdventureswithCPAPanybody try mouth tape for mouth leaks?
🤯 sleep apnea👍, acid reflux👍, IBS👍. Thank you for this mindblowing connection. I will trial a CPAP next week.🤞 And I must say your channel is hilarious in a good way. 🙏🙏🙏🖖
Thanks, friend!
I just picked up an auto set loos just like that one. Found it in a pile of spilled stuff on the way to the dump. Only had a little over 650 hours on it. Like new. It was missing the power adapter. My brother loaned me one as nd it runs like a top. I cleaned it up and gave it a test run. Worked beautifully. Now I have a great backup unit.
Dennis, I worked in Radio Broadcasting for many years. I truly enjoyed LISTENING to you! You'd be great in Talk Radio!
Daww! Thanks! I do have a podcast now, if you're into audio! audiounleashed.podbean.com/
I bet the alcohol in the two cuts on your finger felt good (4:48). Whew!
I really appreciate this video. I've been using a hybrid mask for sometime, but honestly struggling with it. I've always thought I needed to wear a full face mask being a "mouth breather" however the tip of where/how to place the tongue was interesting and happened to have a nasal mask I never used. Gave it a try and was so surprised that I kept my mouth closed all night. I've now switched to the nasal cushion and is a completely different experience for the better
That's amazing! Congrats! 💗
Can you clean the motor? Need to clean one I received from a smoker🤮🤢
Yeah exactly what works for someone else might not work for you. I so badly didnt want a full face mask but my deviated septum is bad enough that its common for both nasal passages to be fully stuffed up and I have to breath through my mouth.
Huh the mewing is interesting, as you were describing it i realized i was already doing it and its my prefered natural resting for my tongue. But yeah im not sure if it really alligns your teeth. My bottom front teeth are pretty crooked but the top front row ive been completed by my dentist how straight they are so its like its cancled out?
