Cigar Review Ozgener Bosphorus
Cigar Review Ozgener Bosphorus

Rested/aged about 5 months in my humidor

See ratings below
In this video I review the Ozgener Family Cigars Bosphorus. The name is taken from the Bosphorus Strait in Turkey, which is where Tim Ozgener’s family came from.
You may recognize Tim Ozgener’s father’s name - Cano A. Ozgener, founder of CAO cigar company. Tim Ozgener ran CAO, but a few years after the company was sold to General Cigar, Tim departed.
For several years Tim Ozgener laid low - he was a “silent partner” in Crowned Heads cigar company, in fact Crowned Heads distributes Ozgener family cigars today.
Looking at the Bosphorus, it is a decent-looking cigar but I was struck by how small it appeared for a robusto. A hair under 5 inches and the listed 52 ring gauge felt more like 48 gauge in my hand. But I’ve been wrong before, more on that later.
The wrapper is slisted as “Havana 2000 grown in Ecuador,” it looks like a habano wrapper, bred from Cuban Corojo. Two binders on this cigar - an Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade and unspecified Nicaraguan Jalapa region-grown leaf. All Nicaraguan fillers in the middle - looking at the foot, it appeared loosely packed, but the stick felt comfortably firm in my hand.
I was happy with the construction on this stick. As I show in the video, the box press disappeared midway and the round cigar did appear to be 52 gauge, so I stand corrected about that. My draw preference is on the loose side, and this had a very, very loose draw. Burned great, no relights until one at the very end. No canoeing, straight burn all the way. The total smoke lasted just over an hour which is more than acceptable for a robusto.
Body was in my opinion quite full, a lot of black pepper. This is not a smooth tasting cigar, and the flavor profile is not particularly complex - wood, with a bit of leather and maybe coffee, all overpowered by the black pepper spice which stuck around for most of the cigar.
I rated this cigar a 8.0/10. At $12 or so retail (like most Crowned Heads distributed products, it is mostly a brick & mortar distribution with little discounting) I can’t recommend this for everyone - only if you are looking for a stronger, spicier experience would I suggest getting one.

Cigar Bands

How These Cigar Bands Revolutionized the Cigar Business It’s hard to believe, but a simple strip of paper (the cigar bands we pretty much take for granted today) revolutionized the entire cigar business. The story of cigar bands starts in the early 1800s - Gustav Bock was a cigar maker in Cuba who exported his cigars to Europe, and he developed a reputation for making excellent cigars. His prob...

From Seed to Leaf - How Your Cigar is Made When we think about how cigars are made, the focus tends to be on the more “glamorous” parts of cigar making, like blending and rolling. Buit cigars start out as seeds - and while seeds and plants may not seem as interesting, I uncovered some fascinating facts about the beginning of the birth of our cigars. So let’s take a look at how modest seeds are ...

Deep Dive Into My Father Cigars

My Father Cigars have not been around as long as many of the cigar makers, but their relatively brief history is an interesting story. Don Pepin Garcia immigrated to Miami from Cuba in 2002, and bought a very small cigar operation in Little Havana to practice the trade skills he had honed in Cuba. In a bold move, he named his new company "El Rey de Los Habanos," which translates as "The King of...

Cigar Review CAO America
Переглядів 2922 місяці тому
It's Memorial Day weekend so I am reviewing the CAO America, a classic cigar that's been around since 2007. Promoted as an "American" cigar, it really is a distant third to two other cigars. The CAO America has an all-American wrapper (Connecticut Broadleaf and Connecticut Shade barber pole) but the inside is a mix of tobacco from Nicaragua, Italy and the Dominican Republic. While the CAO Ameri...

I was also just reading some companies out of the country will ship Cuban cigars discreetly like putting them in certain packages, removing the bands and shipping the bands separately etc. to make it passed customs it could be another way Cuban cigars are getting into the USA easily.

Oh wow, that may be the highest I've seen you rate a cigar! Also the translation of Mi querida - it isn't just in Nicaraguan culture but Spanish in general I think. I recall asking a Spanish mate of mine about it and they were kind of like "woah, I'd be mindful how I use that" and proceeded to explain it something similar to you! 😂

    1. My favorite band designs are the simplest. 1 or 2 colors, simple rectangular diecuts (Cohiba), that kind of thing. 2. Been saving bands for over 25 years. Have 2 liquor bottles full.

Interesting. I prefer more elaborate, colorful bands, such as La Aroma de Cuba, some Alec Bradley bands, like the Prensado, and the San Cristobal line. I tend to be more interested in trying a cigar if its band is appealing. But, I've learned not to judge a book (cigar) by its cover (band). Cheers!

I’ve had nothing but issues with zippo single butane. I tend to just use a straight zippo. Being an ex smoker the fuel taste is nothing that’s bothered me. I ended up getting a wood humidor. Just prepped it for a few weeks before using. Have had no real issues with it. Got a bead pack to go in it. Just filled it with the liquid I got to season the humidor and it works fine. The humidor was won off a cigar bidding website for $50 for a 50 count cigar holder. My cutters were just cheap straight cuts from a local cigar store.

Plume does not exist. What you're referring to is mold that can be wiped off and isn't on the foot. Every single cigar that people think is plume which has been tested at a lab, has been proven to be mold. Period

Your advice is good, but starting with medium-level or, worse, flavored cigars could be a serious obstacle to falling in love with cigars.I think that Cubans are not a "trap" but still the best cigars in the world, it's a shame that communists on one side and Chinese on the other are making them a joke.

I agree Jim! Tupperware is the way to go! I use Systema and I have 3 of them. Best investment I made for my cigars. I keep it in a wineador with 65% boveda packs and a digital hygrometer. The best decision I made with my cigars. I would highly recommend Tupperware.

I've always felt that AF bands are the most elegant, classy, sophisticated, and iconic looking cigar bands. To me they are pretty much the pinnacle of what a high end luxury cigar band should look like. The embossing, the metalic gold, the extreme detail, great color combinations, they just have it all. They are definitely in a league of their own when it comes to their bands. With the Don Carlos being my favorite of the regular bands.

I got two of these in a sampler and didn't really enjoy the first but I was fresh to the cigar world so thought I just didn't know enough to appreciate it. After a time when I understood better I smoked the other and found I could taste more but there just wasn't much to taste. I found it very earthy with a subtle cocoa and coffee undertone but not much else. It burned well, reasonably straight line, no dark spot like you had. It does have a long burn time and I smoke quickly. All in all, I probably won't be buying another for a long time.
