    For matte, I use either of : Staedtler Lumograph black, Faber Castell Black Matt 1111 (hard to find) and Faber Castell Pitt Matte. There is an even harder to find Chinese pencil named Maries whose 12 B is fairly matt and the 14B is a properly matt (yet not dusty) charcoal based pencil. For the blackest blacks, properly matt however, the best I have used so far is the Conte a Paris Pierre Noir (Black Rock). It isn't graphite (different mineral altogether). They come in an almost indistinguishable b, 2b and 3B. The Conte Carbon pencils are also matt and properly dark with the HB comparable to comparable to a 12 B Faber Castell Pitt Matt and the 2 B comparable with the FC 14B (For avoidance of doubt that's FC 12B = Conte Carbon HB and FC 2B = Conte carbon 14B).

    Which orderless mineral spirit? I'm in US and can't find Zest It anywhere, even large art supply online. Jackson's shows they don't even have available. I don't have a good ventilated area to work in so I haven't purchased those at the craft store. Advice?

      Hi, Any OMS will work, OMS, Odorless Mineral Spirits is an odorless product found in art stores, Gamblin, Mona Lisa are 2 brand names. You only need a tiny bottle as it goes a long way. cheers

    • @Drawingwithcolour
      @Drawingwithcolour Місяць тому

      You can also purchase a blending marker, there are specific blending markers for coloured pencil blending. The OMS is odorless as long as the room is not closet sized, and you keep the door open you should be fine. Dip brush, close lid, if you feel it affecting you. J

    The base color in the last example (the flower) is a bit confusing. Since you used red as the main color, wouldn’t a lighter version of red be the base color instead of yellow? Great tutorial lesson. ! We would love to see your videos more often .

    Thanks for the tip! Very interesting for a beginner like me to see how purple can be used as a shading color for green. Is there a way to understand which shading color using for other colors? Let's take for example blue. Should some orange-ish shade be chosen as shading colour, since it sits more or less on the other side of the color wheel? And how about shading red? Thanks again :)

  • @MetisLeigh427
    @MetisLeigh427 2 місяці тому

    I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but every time I add the second color for the shading sphere, there's a harsh transition even though I'm using a feather-light touch. I can still see the page tooth through the colors, even after I add a few more layers, so I'm fairly certain I'm not pressing too hard.

      @@Drawingwithcolour I'm using Prismacolor and UCreate acid free premium drawing paper.

    • @Drawingwithcolour
      @Drawingwithcolour 2 місяці тому

      @@MetisLeigh427 Hello, I think it’s your paper and pencils. UCreate paper is not a high end drawing paper and the prismacolors, although a nice pencil is not the best pencil. I know this for sure, sometimes we can only work with what we have, your paper is not thick/heavy and I suspect does not have enough tooth on it. If this is the only paper you have, keep working with it, but you’ll have to go a lot lighter with your pressure - even 2 layers on that paper can be a problem. If you would like better results, and if you do have a bit of a small budget, instead opt for a better paper such as Legion Stonehenge White, green cover. You will get far fewer sheets of paper, but they will be thicker, more tooth that can take layers better and is one of the top papers for coloured pencil drawing. There are others, but that one is a good start, you can find it in most art stores and through amazon, go with a smaller paper pad. You’ll see you can layer better. Also, the prismacolor pencils which I have used for years - can be very very waxy. So keep your light hand as you are doing - just barely touch the paper, and keep your pencil sharp to get the colour into the tooth. 3 Things for coloured pencil success, good quality paper, a good pencil - again if you have a tiny budget go with Polychromos from Faber Castell, and a good pencil sharpener, such as M&R and or KUM. Good luck. cheers

    • @MetisLeigh427
      @MetisLeigh427 2 місяці тому

      @@Drawingwithcolour I had a feeling the paper may be the issue. I did try a few things and I found that I get much better results if I go over the base layer a few times to even out the pencil strokes. Up and down, left and right, and then diagonal. I know I have to be really careful to not make the base layer too thick and go as lightly as possible, but I am seeing better results. Not quite where I want it to be, so I'll try the paper you suggested and see how it works out. Thank you for taking the time to reply to me. I really appreciate it!
