Eye Protection for Jiu Jitsu & WHY I will NEVER train without Goggles AGAIN (I Almost Lost My Eye)
The most common question I get is "Why the goggles Brandon?"
Today I'm going to tell you WHY I will never do Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling, or any other form of Grappling or Mixed Martial Arts without eye protection.
I'll explain the injury that left me blind for days and explain to you guys how to optimize training with goggles.
If you've ever had a bad eye injury you will relate to this video very much. If you haven't, then maybe this video isn't for you.
P.s in my 13 years of grappling I have had countless injuries: Knee, shoulder, rib, neck, back, and more. But, no pain or post-injury fear has compared to the eye injury.
Hopefully, you found this helpful.
Thanks for watching.

Wrestler vs BJJ Legend at the Jiu-Jitsu World Championships (2024 ADCC & CJI Recap)

Today's video is a reflection of this past weekend's Jiu-Jitsu events. I competed against 2x ADCC World Champion Felipe Pena of Brazil in the first round. Felipe is undoubtedly the best Jiu-Jitsu practitioner that I have ever faced in my short time in this sport. If you don't know, my name is Brandon Reed. I am a 3x NAIA National Wrestling Champion from the USA. The NAIA is the private small sc...

3 Drills to Develop Shot Mechanics for Takedowns in BJJ or Wrestling

If you're new to takedowns, whether it's Wrestling, MMA, or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, then these 3 drills are going to be useful. The Biggest Mistake BJJ Practitioners Make with Takedowns (Even ADCC Champions do THIS!)

Today's video is going to address the biggest mistake BJJ practitioners make when they play the takedown game. I've seen this be true from ADCC-level competitors to White Belts. This brought back memories..!! Back when I was active I would end up behind my opponent almost at will..!! Somehow I managed to always get a 2 on 1 body lock from behind while standing..!! I then used my right knee to turk there left knee down to the deck..!! The whole time I'm still locked in on the 2 on 1..!! Once on deck I would use the locked in 2 on 1 to tip the opponent up for near fall points..!! The method worked like a charm against some very high level opponents..!!

As someone who was just a spectator and just genuinely wondering, do you think you should've controlled Felipe's feet/legs more in order to pass? Or was there like a "feeling" where you couldn't? I noticed you were hand fighting a lot but did grab his ankles a couple times but dropped them. Just wasn't sure if you didn't feel like you could actually control his legs/feet to pass. Not trying to discredit at all, genuinely curious what your thoughts are about controlling his legs while you're trying to get into NS or just pass his guard in general. It was awesome seeing you on the big stage! Excited to watch you at Pans and No Gi worlds!

I think you are correct. I should have controlled the legs more. I was almost TOO AWARE of his Bear Trap and stay too far outside. That being said, I watched all his matches and he never got close to giving up a guard pass. Including 40 minutes with Gordon. Still learning. Most people (I know your not) attack me. But I’m still new to BJJ and learning. And although wrestling is grappling it is not BJJ or guard passing. In practice I do way more body lock passing and camping, but with him I knew it wouldn’t work well.

I felt really bad about it. luckily they walked it off and felt fine the next day And I've had 2 eye infections when I first started bjj from not being used to the dirty mats and not washing out my eye as soon as I felt something get in it. Now as soon as I feel like there's anything whatsoever in my eye even if it might just be an eyelash or tiny bit of dust I'll tap and say I need to wash my eye and go to the bathroom to wash it it out. First of all, you did what you could given your exp vs his, but you tried your best. He played 'his game' and didn't want to wrestle with you at all. He prob did a quick google search and saw you were a wrestler so already your game is null from the start. Try to pace yourself as well. Outside passing is good vs city and maybe state level bjj guys, but at highest (regionals, aka those who place top 1/2 at trials), this wont work. Many has already built a style against explosive people and scrable heavy. Also each power move you did got you tired, which Pena exposed and results were points. So once he got you in mount, he's just making you tired. It's ADCC but this tourny does not favor wrestlers anymore, which is a shame. Would love to see you dunk him on his head, like Roger vs Chim chim (something for you to research). Try to work on grips and hand positions. YOu got the power to match him and he def wont submit you early. He waited for you to move and capitalize on each time you lowered your stamina. Try to bring your knee to his butt when he does open guard, stops his hips from moving and also a good way to him to crunch and feel his movement. Meaning if he moves you can back away and regain position again (similar way to fight against spider guard players). You were trying to jump north south without pressuring his hips or legs, hard against a dymanic guard like his. Keep up the good work, find big training partners with a good guard! As you said Pena vs Ryan, he pressured Pena from the start and stayed away from danger (which he drilled) against the bear trap. Always learn.

I had my first tournament at Tap Cancer Out. My takedowns were pretty bad since I usually roll from the ground in class. That’s why I’m watching videos like this-to learn more about the beginning of a jiu-jitsu competition and everything on my feet. Man, I was bad. Ha. One loss, two wins, and a bronze-hey, I’ll take it. I can pull off the takedown drilling stuff in class when my partner is going with the flow, but when I’m up against a resisting opponent, everything falls apart. EVERYTHING. I recently started talking to my coach and training partners about this, and now I’ve got people willing to start on their feet with me. They’re giving me some solid resistance without trying to kill me. Videos like this are interesting because I had no idea this was even an option for preventing injury. I also just bought Danaher’s stand up instructional, for now that is TMI for me, but at least I have it. Thanks for making videos, your technique looks pretty solid!

My mma coach used to tell us in wrestling class For every failed 1000 takedowns, you’ll get 1 or 2 successful ones. Just keep repping it out (ofc with good technique) What I learned with wrestling and Judo We rep hundreds of entries of throws and takedowns. In BJJ, they do the casual 2 reps per partner then switch. That’s is not enough period. Drill to kill

Fantastic video as always, super interested on your take on the 4th line of defense. It hasn't been covered before and might be a great idea for a video, could help get more views in as well! Showing a couple options against the different shots would be wonderful.

First things first is you need glasses otherwise you can't see your opponent. If you can't see your opponent then you must extend your hand and feel for them.

would you ever recommend purchasing a grappling dummy for solo drills and practice as a bjj white belt?
