Amanda correctly points out our need for "freely available information that is understandable, practical, and functional." This was reinforced at an event I attended this week. The Medical/Health Director of a major UK manufacturing company shared that they require all health information to be written at a 10-12 year old reading level. Otherwise, much of their audience, who often already face various life challenges, wouldn't be able to understand or use the information. The current approach isn't working. While we claim to support a social model, we remain stuck in medical terminology and thinking. The health system, medical model, assessment process, and even the neurodiversity movement continue using complex language. Meanwhile, people who need help are struggling more and more. Brilliant interview - LOVE Amanda :O)
Both me and my mom have ADHD. Our conversations are both of us yapping and neither of us listening 😂
There are shopaholics, just as a side point. I'm not saying ADHD are shopaholics, but spending money does seem to release dopamine for people. So I guess it makes sense when you feel shitty you spend money for a short term reward.
Hey man. Thanks very much for coming out with the content. It helps enormously. I've been looking at porn for years man, no way is that online shit any good for our mental health man. I know I've been struggling with it and this is the motivation I need to kick this habit into touch. I genuinely think porn harms everyone that goes near it
People say they wouldn't swap bi-polar for a "normal" life because of the highs. However Heston is currently in a clearly medicated state to save his life. Is it truly worth it for the lows and self-destruction? Saying he suddenly understands String theory and "Quantum" on a high is delusional.
I teach about the struggles of Autism and ADHD to NHS staff. And I'm always asking for things people have noticed while also studying my own life and I've never even thought of this. Never even crossed my mind, but as soon as you started laying the idea out it very much hit me. Its an incredible observation. (and the issue you pointed out is a very common one as well I found with health/care workers) which is that they can see and know about the physical and social disavantages (and even the price of it) but not a lot is know on the emotional tax. Someone might spent 6 months longer in a depressive episode due to rejection. Thats a cost assuming a 32k a year job is 16k that no ones going to pick up on. Theres the guilt tax. This is such a good idea that I've never heard before. I'd love this to be explored deeper (and I defo know I'm going to start looking out for it and for examples in my life). I think it is an area that probs is a bigger issue then is even being made out in this clip. My gut feeling is the number is way way way higher then £1600 or even £3200. I reckon it might be shockeningly high!
This was incredible dialogue! As a child I grew up being called “weird”, but getting no help for it. Everything was such a struggle, and I just spent growing up trying to pretend everything was fine. Now as an adult I’ve found out that “weird” ended up fitting diagnoses of AuDHD, dyslexia, twice exceptional, and PTSD. I would trade all those diagnoses in exchange for the child me to have gotten help without diagnosis. I hope for the world you’ve been discussing here.
Defrosting that chicken you let go outbof date, making lunch and leaving it home so you have to buy lunch. The list goes on.
oh my GOD this is fascinating, I genuinely thought this would just be a personal shortcoming of mine. to hear it laid out like this in the scope of adhd is just...wow. mindblowing!!!
It wasn’t until I lost my job from Covid that I realized I might be autistic because it was the first time I wasn’t in gogogo survival mode. I was home unable to be myself with a partner I could trust to love me regardless and booom I realized I had been masking my entire life.
So many good things to think about. As a teacher with autism and ADHD in Sweden I understand what you mean when you talk about stemming the flow to the health system by starting with helping students manage in school. I agree, but here in Sweden “manage in school” often means being able to attend and receiving a passing grade. That is a far cry from the support many children (and adults) need to not only manage but thrive. Especially the “silent, academically brilliant” kids suffer from a system where schools are gatekeepers to a diagnosis. I have so many students who are not getting the support they need from the health system because “it can’t be that bad if they make the grade and attend school” and then suddenly fail “out of the blue”. So much suffering could be avoided if making the grade or not did not matter in order to get help.
Earth system for humans & the earth. The system we have had for several decades has too many externalities. It is only good for a few.
This is the first time I've heard of dyspraxia. So helpful, thank you.
It's interesting how smart she is but she misses the point that move away from DEI is being spearheaded by capitalists, racists, and authoritarians. Like there is a through line and it's not "oh man there are so many labels to keep track of"
Me, all over! 😢
This is because normal behavioural traits have been swept up in the net of adhd characterisation for the benefit of bureaucracy. Considering the wide scope of traits for diagnosis currently used it could be said that everyone in the world would score somewhere along the spectrum line. Basically less is more and the whole grading system should be scrapped and we start again using only the neuro divergent traits and dismiss all neuro normal crossovers
00:14:26 Eugene Bleuler was responsible for this because he stole credit for Freud’s elaboration of his own autism (“infantile autoerotism”) by incorporating it into his seminal elaboration of schizophrenia. Keep in mind this means autistic adults are still misdiagnosed as schizophrenic today,, though finally including ASD in the adult differential in 2013 has likely begun to reduce that. Had Freud not been autistic he’d have seen Bleuler coming (and invested less of himself in mentoring Jung, too). If one realizes this makes Freud worth revisiting it soon becomes apparent he oversexualized most things because he was a survivor of paternal incest (and even got his Oedipal theory backwards as a consequence of still blaming himself for his own abuse). Babies can’t begin to formulate patricidal sexual rivalry,, but narcissistic fathers (one of whom even wrote a play about it that long-predated Freud) can certainly formulate infanticidally psychotic rivalries. So Oedipal psychosis is a narcissistic father’s counterpart to an (autistic) borderline female mother’s postpartum (wish for the child to become “unborn“ - egodefensive undoing), and only a compulsion to molest the son represses his infanticidal obsession. The molestation is evolutionarily conserved as it ends such a son’s (autistic) nonseparation. Dissociative amnesia about paternal incest is clearly why child molesters are the only prisoners who universally trigger other male inmates (who aren’t groomed to be “gay for the stay“ out of thin air). When it’s an (autistic) sociopathic father’s counterpart to a narcissistic mother’s postpartum her paternally-cathected rage is infanticidally displaced as “SIDS”🙄. Otherwise she’s not a clinical narcissist. Stomach -sleeping is so common in autism because it’s a defensive posture against scowling or menacing mothers.whose undeveloped emotional capacity indicates they’re inevitably either autistic or narcissistic, see? NPD females are triggerred by son’s’ backs being turned toward them, so smother them. John Ramsey directing ithat toward JonBenet was a notable exception who proved that rule. Think about it - - disordered (iNPD) overexpressing nonetheless endemic male narcissism too brittle to tolerate the persistence of his wife’s autistic BPD sequela as emergent NPD. Patsy got too carried away and didn’t realize taking John‘s iNPD crown would’ve left him with nothing but her beauty pageant crowns (which he was of course fine to let her do to Burke). He killed JonBenet because it was unnatural for a narcissistic father (which he hadn’t been enough of to molest Burke) to molest his daughter like a (postautistic) sociopathic father., see? The 50-50 narcissism/autism split among gays and lesbians (c’mon only an autistic guy is going to “bottom” and only a narcissistic female is going to wear a strapon) limits the perpetuation of incest because the very nature of pedophilia means IT’S ALMOST ALL IN THE CONTEXT OF INCEST, NOT THE TINY FRACTION ON THE NEWS, DUH. Female narcissism is evolutionarily constrained by it’s psychogenic etiology being the idealization of a narcissistic mother (which means typically being her youngest daughter because of course she’s going to scapegoat the eldest daughter to the point of autism and hello we should be able to figure out from here what happens to any additional daughters between them as they move from idealized to devalued with each successive daughter’s birth). Why do we imagine nobody thought women could even be autistic before feminism if it wasn’t their (subclinically narcissistic) fathers’ devaluing preferences for sons and (subclinically autistic) mothers’ willingness to put the needs of others ahead of their own (and semiautistic resting bitchfaces toward sons) keeping stay-at-home mothering (and the pursuit of warmer wives by repetition compulsion) in business? Subclinical autism is as endemic to human females (at least in societies that are going to persist) as subclinical narcissism is to males. And Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex wasn’t the product of Greek culture (another one that produced a lot of geniuses, particularly gay ones) for nothing. Just saying. So autistic males and narcissistic females becoming less rare is the result of the same collective stupidity that turns autistic females into trannys since throwing narcissistic parents into psych wards and prisons according to whether they’ve molested and supporting the autistic (borderline or sociopathic) ones who haven’t isn’t profitable. I sound like Greta Thunberg LOL but I can figure out I psychiatry gypped me by never telling me I’m gay because my mother didn’t want me and I’m autistic because she wished I hadn’t been born. I was diagnosed around 1981 and still nobody’s ever told me that. I figured out my own autism during quarantine Male narcissism and female autism are certainly pathologies when they’re SEVERE, but the renaissance of female narcissism and male autism is actually the inevitable product of uninformed policy that WANTS to bury its head in the sand. There’s no species more predatory than sapiens-who ignored (by evolving egos) the intraspecies predation that turned us into our own apex predator as we civilized ourselves. Psychiatry still thinks echolalia is a symptom of schizophrenia because misinformation is even more refractory to remedy than misdiagnosed autism. Not sure if Trump has fired any federal mental health workers but getting rid of those who can’t add up or agree that echolalia is perseveration of failure to flatter the primary attachment figure into dialogue would be a great start. Compulsion to fire people goes back at least as far as his television show and I almost wonder if it doesn’t repress unresolved fear of job insecurity Fred Sr. inflicted on all his kids (by comparing them to one another and making them compete). Of course “service” doesn’t inspire politicians to lead…only trauma ever has or will. Whether we know it or not we do all need government and don’t all want to do it so I don’t mean that disparagingly.. Political office is a prosocially adaptive trauma sublimation people fortunate enough to have better options don’t see for what it is. Which can undoubtedly make it feel thankless AF. I remember the press getting on him last time around for expecting to be thanked about something or other. NGL I didn’t understand it either, but I can figure out that even when we’re right about it only the projected narcissism of our own superegos calls someone else a narcissist. Narcissists are about image. Trump’s about power. Thank goodness.
Yes , and som people still perceves neuro atipecal person fore not needing , from a very young age, needing speciel guiding and even medicin
Triggered already and less than a minute in. Mixed metaphors are hard work.
I can relate to what was said.
If the only tool you have is a hammer then everything looks like a nail.
I really appreciate this discussion 🙏🏽💜
as much as i love destigmatizing ASD symptoms, I don't think it's good to downplay the struggles of those with low function autism. I work with those kids every single day and there is certainly a difference. I am not saying high functioning folks don't struggle, because they very much do, but trying to imply low functioning people are just the same as high functioning is just not true.
I actually totally think her title of the book would have been a winner.. I definitely prefer it. Small talk is so non specific, generic, boring, and misleading as a title
on the stereotyping of cis white boys as the only likely group most likely to be diagnosed as autistic - absolutely right, but I am part of that group and I was never diagnosed, screened, the question was never even asked. I think the awareness of the condition was so low (and then so badly demonized - thanks not-doctor Andrew Wakefield), that screening in education and social settings just didn't happen. I would like to think this has changed. My recent diagnosis has reassured me that the medical world is much more switched on regarding autism, but I know society at large is still incredibly ignorant and unfortunately also bigotted.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! 🙏
AUDHD is going through letters immediately but then doom piling them
🤍🐲🐉🐦🔥🍁🔥🦚
Just want to acknowledge for anyone out there that might have also gone like this 😢at around the 8:45 marker… because you’ve had one of those days in which it’s taken until 5pm just to fold the basket (mountain) of washing & cried thru the second half bc even tho there is food in the house you haven’t done the shop yet & both the fear of the judgement & dissaproval in the household is so overwhelming & then realising all you needed that whole time was someone to have come and sat with you while you did it… and also realising that that ain’t a thing in your life…. Things to strive for I guess… but so amazing to know there are such people out there in the world that can be that supportive and understanding… there is so much hope in that…
Please inform everyone you know you can trust.
Is it me or nowadays everyone is adhd?
It’s you
Extremely relatable in so many ways! New fave podcast and comedian. It also took the doctors 15 years to examine me, had to pause for an empathetic rage 😅
Please credit the Comedian. Her name is Marjolein Robertson.
The most concise wide view of Who we are. Society confusion us and them builds up the Trauma later when we cannot push It anywhere IT becomes in Charge!
buying things with credit cards is poison to an adhd brain. you do not see the hidden fees and monthly costs as they add up until its too late. i got rid of almost every subscription and i only pay cash so that i can see the amount of money thats left.
I had very similar with an optometrist. I explained what was going on with my vision and he said it’s not your eyes love, it’s your brain! It’s so excellent when people know their stuff and go the extra mile. 👍
I’m in this place too. I have over 20k worth of debt I couldn’t tell you where some of it went. A lot of it for me was oh do this thing I.e. start a hobby and then build a building for it, then start a masters course never get it finished. I have been working with Stepchange - my biggest shame moment was telling my partner and family. Alongside it was the realisation that others are in this position but cope as their salary is good enough. I have learnt to be more focused on money and trying to be less about the continence. I have so many of the consumerism stuff as well. I spend money now and then have a head and heart do I keep the thing I have bought. Do I need it? My lifestyle is not one that is that of a celeb I spend mostly on silly things. Impulsivity is largely to blame alongside I think my dyscalculia as well. I’m literally so looking forward to being completely debt free and not on a debt management plan. That said Stepchange have been immense anyone who wants help talk to them they don’t judge and will assist
I think this is now my favourite podcast 😂 ❤
Welcome to the gang 🟢
I have a bad habit of when people ask me how i am just out of formality not because they care, for example when going through a check out at the supermarket. I say bad and see if they notice
Great interview, completely understand the head of rabbits at night, so frustrating.
This is kinda like how ADHD can be useful in restaurant/bar work! Everything needs to be done immediately, but some are more immediate than others, so you’re constantly rearranging the priorities of your set tasks while continually executing some of them AND taking on some more AND coordinating with the rest of your team. Perfect for someone whose brain runs at 100mph wether they want it to or not 😂
I feel this! When I have to present to large groups in work, it’s like all the brain cogs that usually turn independent of each other suddenly mesh and click together and work as intended! Same thing when I’m performing music the odd chances I get, it’s like the pressure of an audience forces my brain into gear. I love it, it’s part of my superpower! I know so many people who hate public speaking but I’m like “I’ll do it, I’m good at it and I like it!” On the other hand if it’s small groups or one on one then it’s not the same; I’ll trip over all my words, struggle to form words and then speak with my hands instead, make up analogies that nobody gets, accidentally talk over/interrupt, drift off and have my own conversations… every superpower has its curses!
same when i sing a song for people and catch myself listening to their conversations arranging the next song to fit and scanning if they like the song, adjusting the intonation but in conversation listening to people and looking in their eyes at the same time is too many tasks at once.
This is amazing! Loved Ali on BB and love her on here, too. As a neurodivergent (diagnosed moderately autistic, and suspect ADHD), queer, gender fluid person, I feel seen. 💞 x
Wouldn't wish this in anyone. It wastes your life. The lows are horrendous, last between 8 months and a year. Not wanting to be here. Then the highs. They last 3 to 4 months. Hyper crazy. The brain just doesn't level. Can't hold down a single job.
How does this only have 300likes????? What?? these are the kind of talks I want to see more of..
You lost me, I liked the video, hate the clickbate. Nothing here was shocking, stop contributing to noise and extreme attention seeking please!
YES.
Oh, it’s so so frustrating. You’re not alone 😔
Sleep paralysis is also related to ADHD? I am constantly finding out things I deal with are related to ADHD
I agree. I graduated in 1998 and I’m ADHD and bipolar... neither of which diagnosed properly. ... This year my son graduates from the very same high school, they’ve gotten better as he has ADHD ... better but not nearly enough. ♥️
