I'm a 40-year-old autistic woman and LOVE the Heartstopper series. Not only is the show making great strides for representation of the queer community, but also for neurodivergent people! I hope this will encourage more filmmakers to include neurodivergent talent. Bradley is a lovely person and actor, and I wish him a successful career.
I'm in my 70's, don't watch Big Brother but do watch Heartstopper and I was actually surprised to discover Bradley is Autistic, I must say that I love the developing friendship between James and Isaac (Tobie Donovan). This is certainly an interview which makes you think in it's context and inspiration. Well done Bradley
It's so cool to see an interview like this in the context of such a deservedly well-loved show! I began acting at age 4, but I also found a connection to the emotional specifics and mindset of non-autistic people through theatrical experiences which, to an unfortunate extent, made it slightly harder to be diagnosed as a trans man raised under the expectations placed on young girls and, to a fortunate extent, really helped me to not always be alone and ostracized as a kid. It is also surprisingly useful for acting and treating roles as an evidence-based application. I wish autistic traits were valued based on what those traits can be used for rather than what they cannot. A different operating system of the mind isn't necessarily negative; macOS, Windows, and Linux have their pros and cons. The expectations of non-autistic people and capitalism can be crushing, but with the resources and freedom, we can experience and achieve many things that would be impossible for most people without our separation from the many.
This was brilliant, thankyou so much for sharing. I empathise with your comments about not asking for accommodations and not wanting to be seen as hassle. I had the same thing when young and starting out in my career and it does hurt to know that there are many younger people who struggle on with work and without the accommodations they deserve.
I had to stop listening to him as he was incapable of not using the word "like"; so frequently did he repeat the word that it became too major a distraction to hear his message.
