All these new ships are a lost opportunity: they're just more of the same. Same issue with the Type8: what we needed was a new concept, for example a ship with an "observatory deck", meaning a cockpit BELOW the ship, possibly with a 360 degrees view. Yes that ship would be unplayable in combat and tricky to fly in stations but so what? It would be a pure exploration ship (in the end, real explo is all about planetary stuff), and would really add something.

Yes there's definitely some elements of roleplaying a bit. ED Copilot is pretty awesome and a huge QoLI for roleplaying

More ships is always nice, but currently fdev goes with monetising first and hell with the bug fixing ...

New Ships do not make the game compatible with new/more platforms. Elite is still one of the greatest VR titles out there. But noting on Quest, Pico or AVP in sight. And lets be honest. Elites Graphics looks not that demanding.

This ship is rather unique. There isn't another ship that has the hardware slots this one does.

It's all the explo ships in one perfect storm package, if the jump range is indeed better than that of the JumpaConda. Hence it is needed. I can retire 5 other ships (Phantom daily driver, Phantom explorer, Dolphin, iCourier and Cobra taxis and mission runners) by making a daily driver and a dedicated explorer out of the Mandalay.

Personally I don't like this one. Not the looks, not how it doesn't really add anything interesting and how (for a dedicated exploration ship) the cockpit view is abysmal, even with the lower view port. It's not like I don't want them to add more ships, it's more that IF they do it then they should put in more effort. As it stands this ship is a missed opportunity.

The point is this will get more jump range and it looks awesome, plus I can’t see any reason yet why it can’t do all three, the internals look good so I do think it will be able to do most things and well, and again it looks so good

When it comes to things like exploration, or doing ground missions, I would like the concept of a large ship with some kind of 'shuttle' to land with. That way you can have the huge ship, with all the modules, but still be able to land easily on any planet surface. This has been said before of course, but worth mentioning from time to time.

This ship looks like its just going to be straight better than all the other exploration ships in every way. I think we all want more ships. Pretty sure the people complaining about we don't need more of X ship are just jealous because X ship doesn't fit their style or they wanted something else instead

I found the Python Mk II a less capable combat ship than the Python. I didn't hype myself up before getting it, so it wasn't that it failed to meet unrealistic expectations. Combat is supposed to be its niche. I look forward to getting both the Type 8 and the Mandalay when they become available for Credits. The Type 8 looks like it really might be a welcome edition. A medium landing pad ship with good cargo capabilities. The Mandalay might well replace my Phantom as a go to traveling ship. Of course I have to get my hands on both and play with them before I come to my own conclusion. The Python Mk II, left me underwhelmed, I must say. I can live with the release model if wealthier players keep the lights on for the rest of us.

I find it strange when I hear people say that "oh, I don't agree with the model of paying for early access to new ships", at the same time that people say they like and want those same ships. I remind you that a very significant part of the game's development cost, including the ships, is paid by those who are willing to spend their money on this early access. And this is what allows those who don't want to or can't pay to also have access to the new ships, without having to pay anything, even if it's 3 months later. We all have the right to have an opinion, which I respect, but this specific criticism doesn't seem very congruent to me.

I see this ship as both an apology and a gift to the long suffering explorer community from FDEV. It looks on paper to be the best possible combination and who wouldn’t want that. The game has to evolve, stagnation is guaranteed failure.

I guess my answer is yes. I hated having to choose between flying a smaller, more manageable ship or a large ship with the longest range and most internals. My compromise usually was the Phantom as I had to sacrifice very little except 9ly of jump range to use it. This will outperform them all it looks like. I know explorers sometimes get all up in arms about jump range not really being a thing but, it is better to have it and not need it than the other way around. That said, the new ships seem to be filling "best in class/role" niches vs the existing lineup. At least with the Python MkII, it basically offered a different weapon layout than the FDL. Type 8 made up for the disaster that was the type 7 and I can finally retire my Cargo Python. This ship however, is just better except with some possible niche uses (SLF, Dolphin's cold scooping, etc). At the rate they are pumping them out, will all our old ships slide into obsolescence eventually. Will we get a better large ship than the Corvette, etc. That is probably my only concern. And for the record, I think the early release model is kinda brilliant when employees need paychecks and servers cost money.

It's only the third ACTUAL exploration ship in the game after the AspX and DBX. The Anaconda, Phantom et al might work well for exploration, but they weren't specifically designed for it.

Yes! Next question? There are systems and planets that a DBX cannot get to but an Anaconda can; but the terrain on the planets does not offer a valid landing spot for a Conda.

Even if I had an additional 12 ships that all were literally outclassed in every way but maybe one niche way, and just looked like more variety... I'd be elated. Mystified by the potential to vary my look on occasion. Some ships look like they are meant for dakka. But are best served trading. And some ships are best served for dakka but look like they should race. And I'd like to just be able to spice it up.

I have over 4000 hours in Elite, ranked in the top 250 of commanders on Inara based on my experience on all aspects of the game and flew around the galaxy literally and my biggest grievance with this ship is that they made it definitively the best exploration ship choice. Best jump range, best med size maneuverability, SCO purpose built, best SCO fuel economy, best SCO control, Ideal internal slots sizes for optimal exploration travel and a very tight landing footprint riveling the Asp X to accommodate Bio hunting where small class ships shine the best. They should have given it some sort of compromise to still give players a reason to fly another ship other that the reason to do so because they want to. Most people only want the best and this ship will be the best period and that's unfortunate.

Yes. I need this ship for exploration. I find the DBX to fragile, my Anaconda is awesome but has the problem with landing zones, i couldn't get warm with the ASP, i never tried out the Krait because there is something which disturbs me everytime i look at it. I realy do love my Type 6 which i have build as an explorer. I enjoy the fantastic view from my cockpit. But i wasn't going for real deep space in it. (max distance was 5k+ ly away from bubble)
