Ever wondered if those cheap eBay “genuine Cummins” pistons are the real deal? In this quick comparison, I put them side by side with an original set of Cummins pistons to see if they’re truly up to snuff. I even used them in my 6.7L 24-valve build-so there’s a lot at stake! Stick around to see if these budget-friendly pistons live up to their claims or if they’re just too good to be true. Chec...

    Thanks for documenting this build. Very interesting! Will you be doing dyno tests? Hopefully, as I really want to see results with the single turbo then compounds. Rob Winkworth ( CutterupRob ) has a dyno now and I remember you mentioned him awhile back. Looking forward to more content from you. A collaboration with Rob would be awesome, hint, hint.😊

    Tip when painting, wet the floor so when you move around you don’t kick up dust into the paint. Not wet enough that your splashing though. I only say this because you you care enough to not use a $10 spray gun. If you haven’t tried the turbo spray paint, you need to watch a video. It’s close to a real spray gun. Unfortunately it’s only offered in black and white, but it’s great for the right application.

    If it’s a using work truck and not a restoration. Then you might consider a 40s and 50s Stewart Warner South Bend or VW type gas powered heater. Extremely efficient it will supply all the heat you’ll ever need. Somewhat common on Pre 60s vehicles but more common on Imported Vintage VW Beetles headed to Arctic type conditions ie…Alaska,Canada,North Dakota, Montana, Chicago etc… it provided life giving warmth compared to the poor normal use heater. It could also be run on a timer without the engine running. Much smaller than the heater box type setup. In a diesel truck though it would require a small gas tank. Probably not practical in this situation. It would be a natural for gas vehicles with poorly designed or overly complicated heating systems.

      A scheid lightning 13mm, I actually can’t believe I didn’t talk more about it I just realized it! I’ll add some notes to the next video 180 and 215 are the best pumps from the dodge applications, either pump would work for what your goal is. A 160 and 175 pump would also work, they just fall off above 3300rpm or so so you’d want to have a torquier turbo set up

    • @Hazardous-Hotrod-Knowledge
      @Hazardous-Hotrod-Knowledge 12 днів тому

      @ check out the first video in the series, it’s kind of an amalgamation of a couple engines. The crank is from a 6.7, the rods are from a 12 valve and have been shot peened and have ARP rod bolts, there’s gator main studs, and the pistons are from a ISB/QSB. An ISB/QSB engine is pretty much identical to a ram motor when it comes to the bottom end, the older difference is the pistons. Same crank, same rods.

      @Hazardous-Hotrod-Knowledge 12 днів тому

      Yup! Not a regular stock one, and I’ve modified it in a dumb and complex way lol the next video will be covering it I have a standalone controller to use it with the p pump Later it will get paired with an S480 and I’ll be making a video on building the compound set. Im not sure if I’ll drive without the compounds to get a baseline and then add the turbo, or just run compounds from the start.

    • @jerrythechainsawguy8100
      @jerrythechainsawguy8100 12 днів тому

      Hmm… interesting. You didn’t strike me as much of a tech guy. I have a 2nd Gen I put VGT on(stock HE351VE) with a home made controller I made. I’ve wrote a ton of C code for it. I’ve programmed it with a bunch of safety’s and different operating modes. I’ve logged over 50,000 miles on it. In my opinion I have it perfect…. Then I won a turbo from power driven diesel. I talked to them on the phone and one of the guys there said I should try to run compound turbos. I wasn’t interested, but they twisted my arm. Now I have all of the parts to run a HE351 S476 compound set up. When the big turbo spools, the VGT will run the vanes wide open and basically shut the little turbo down. So, kind of alternating turbos (their idea. Not mine). Free compounds? Alternate turbos, and keep boost pressures lower? Why not? I already wrote a compound code… If you are looking for advice or help you could try to track me down. We could blow up our trucks together😅

    Hey love the build, I had a question regarding spray angle. I’m planning on building a 6.7 P-pump as well but planning on using the standard ISB pistons, what spray angle will I need? I’ve heard the stock VP angle works but just wanted to be certain. Thanks!

    As a mechanic and welder just curious about two things. When you weld the gear to the crank had you ever seen it pull up on the other side after running the first bead? I know metal and how it moves but never done this so curious. Also building Cummins engines I’ve seen other builder bore cylinder 6 .002 larger due to cooling issues so curious if you do that as well. I love the video and always love learning new ways. Great video keep it up!!

    • @Hazardous-Hotrod-Knowledge
      @Hazardous-Hotrod-Knowledge 13 днів тому

      The gear is such a tight fit to the crank that it pretty much has no room to pull or move. The welds are also so small that they don’t have much effect either I’ve heard of the slightly larger boring for 6, I’m not entirely sure how much it helps but it seems like a sound idea given the temperature difference. This engine was honed on a standard bore, so it has more piston to wall than a stock engine, I never checked but my machinist “cutterup rob” said it was good to go haha Thanks for the great comment! Check out the 2nd video if you haven’t seen it!

    You are my absolute hero I have been wanting to do this with a Cummins engine for about 20 years ! ... I went high compression boost on gas engines in the '90s when everyone said it was impossible and I proved it worked exceptionally well requiring much less boost to make power, dramatically improved response, ETC Now it is a very popular thing to use high compression and boost on gas engines !!

    • @Hazardous-Hotrod-Knowledge
      @Hazardous-Hotrod-Knowledge 13 днів тому

      Oh man, I’ve been banging heads with idiots on this concept for a while and I eventually got to the point where I just had to do it. It worked good, it sucks that other things took the engine out so it never had a fair chance at life but I’ll be revisiting it. Now I’ve been seeing some resurgence of higher compression builds like a 6.1L stroker. I want to go really extreme with compression, like 24:1, it’s been done with other diesels I haven’t delved with gas much but I can see how the mentality has shifted too. My buddy did a VR6 turbo and it was a big thing to put in a head spacer to reduce compression, so he did it and he found low end suffered and top end wasn’t a ton improved. We thought about it and decided to pull the spacer and just run less boost but bring it in harder on the top end to keep torque down. Car worked great!

    Most parts are built in China, whether anyone wants to admit it or not, yes there are lots of counterfeit out there but the DCEC parts are actually legit Cummins factory in China, you just don’t have the crazy mark up from the cummins dealer, some parts have a crazy mark up, but one has to be careful of the counterfeits, the parts I have bought from DB sales from eBay have been good quality parts

      You can see minor differences in the castings. Normally manufacturers will source parts from multiple sources which seems like what these could be or a blemished part that doesn’t pass quality control. Or china man just did a good job copying that casting.

I’ll be datalogging a bunch to try and show how differently this engine performs vs a mild 12v Cutterup is good shit, he did my machine work for this engine and I always send him my stuff. We chat here and there and there’s a good chance I’ll have him in a video or vice versa!

      @@Hazardous-Hotrod-Knowledge 10 or 20 years ago I would bet you built yourself a very expensive grenade, but now the Chi-Coms have really picked up their socks when it comes to CNC and material quality. Reminds me of the products coming out of Japan back in the 1960s through onto to day. Japanese goods used to be seen as garbage Americans would buy half out of a sense of guilt for the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. But to their credit in the blink of an eye they not only met but exceeded the quality one could find in US domestic products. Not a ringing endorsement for what's left of our manufacturing sector, but it is what it is. Anywhoo - good luck. Stay warm and keep your block heater plugged in.

    This is awesome. I am a Cummins engine builder and I daily a 96 12 valve. Despite all of my mistreatment of the engine, the 450k miles, lack of maintenance, sheer driving abuse (50psi & 600hp) I cant kill her. Its just a studded 12 valve. I really want to kill the motor so that I can justify a new guinea pig engine that I dream to build... A 6.7 block, crank and rods but not a regular 6.7 piston. Many of the early 4.5L industrial motors (basically the 4cyl version of the 6.7) were p-pump engines with modified 4bt heads. I can rob these pistons and Run a true 12 valve head/fuel system with a 6.7 displacement. It will not be as efficient or powerful as the 6.7 24v head. So then why would I do this you ask? Simply one reason. I WANNA HEAR THE SOUND!!!!!

    • @Hazardous-Hotrod-Knowledge
      @Hazardous-Hotrod-Knowledge 18 днів тому

      I haven’t heard of these p pumped 4.5s, only the 3.9L ones, but I also don’t mess with much industrial stuff. I’ll have to look into it but if what you say is true that’s some cool hot rodding potential! Wish I knew of this for my 6.7L 12v build. The spray pattern actually wasn’t that bad on the stock 6.7 pistons, it would’ve been a lot better with the wide bowls and the 6.7 head. Another option is DDP can make custom injectors with the holes set to spray on the 6.7 bowls, that was my long term plan for the p pumped 6.7 You sound like a fellow hot rodding parts Frankensteiner 🤘

    PIA used to have reasonably priced Cummins parts and the quality is good. I don't know if they are still priced the same. I haven't looked in about 4 years so the Biden effect could have changed all that.

    • @Hazardous-Hotrod-Knowledge
      @Hazardous-Hotrod-Knowledge 18 днів тому

      I just did a quick check and they had a 12 valve piston for $120 each, which isn’t too bad, enginetech still beats them out on rockauto but I’m sure if I played around with the part numbers I could find cheaper pistons I’ll consider them when I’m looking for 20 over QSB pistons for the 6.7L 12v That’s for the lead! And yeah, it’s ridiculous how much prices have risen. I’ve priced out parts to sell that I’ve had laying around and with the new prices I’ve been able to damn near sell them for what I’ve paid for them!

  • @montycrain5783

    You should consider a Eaton 10speed, they have a smaller 400lb version with a 860 ft lb Tourqe rating, probably at 60 or 70,000 GVW. Once you learn to float the gears and rev match it’s a much smoother shifting setup than a synchro trans with MUCH less clutch usage and wear. As for so many gears Think of it as a mountain bike; 5 gears shifted in 1 pattern and 2 chainwheels or ranges, low and high. The top being a .74% overdrive. There’s no requirement to go through every gear in a h pattern. Especially Unloaded. Another advantage, a low of 13 to 1 to literally crawl along in heavy traffic at slower than walking speed.Floating up or down a gear if necessary. Without the clutch. At half the price of a T5600.

    • @Hazardous-Hotrod-Knowledge
      @Hazardous-Hotrod-Knowledge 18 днів тому

      Hmmm, I thiiiiink the local wrecker has one that was in some big ford Frankenstein build, 860ft/lbs isn’t a ton but they’re also probably rating the weakest gear. It would be fun to row that many gears though! Maybe in the future I’ll put one in for good content. I do have a gearvendors overdrive laying around that I could bolt up behind my G56 to make it a 12 speed

    With so many hopping up their trucks they may going be going to the new "Golf Ball pistons" newly on the market. 30% increase in performance, dramatically reduced soot, and 200 degree drop in exhaust temps. That's a game changer. I think the industry calls it disruptive tech. Piston companies will have to license the tech to keep up.

    • @bryanst.martin7134

      I have a bone to pick with Speed Of Air. They haven’t done a proper comparison of a stock piston to their piston, anything I’ve seen they’ve give the engines new rings, a hone, and sometimes an extra compression ring on the piston. What I’d like to see to be a proper believer is then take a engine, rip the piston out, golf ball it, then put it right back in. No changes to any parts, same rings, all that. It’s in my notes to do a video about it when I have time haha I’ve built engines with new pistons and the difference in power is insane with fresh rings.

      @@Hazardous-Hotrod-Knowledge Agreed, lot of hype. I've yet to see a more scientific comparison. All SOA pistons are ceramic coated and use the total seal rings with the "gapless" 2nd ring. Most (or possibly all) of the reduced oil contamination is from better ring seal. Naturally, reducing blowby compared to standard rings will increase power as well. By themselves, the total seal rings and ceramic coating are a big change over stock pistons and rings. How much does the dimpling do on its' own? Jury is still out for me until I see a single variable comparison: Dimpled piston vs. non dimpled. Someone needs to test ceramic coated pistons with the same gapless rings vs. SOA pistons. Same bowl shape, same rings, same coating, same cylinder hone profile, etc.
