How I Start My Landscape Paintings
I’m going to walk you through a simple approach that I use to start many of my landscape paintings. Particularly complex ones where there’s a lot of noise and information to convey.
Broadly speaking, it involves mapping out the subject with dark and simple shapes, then, with the paint still wet, going over the top with the highlights and light midtones.
It’s an efficient way to start because you can quickly cover the surface without needing to worry about the tiny details. And once you finally add the light colors, it transforms the simple shapes into realistic objects and things. The dark green shape becomes trees and plants. The dark blue shape becomes water and rocks. And because all this is done wet on wet (provided you’re using oils), you can paint in a way that the light and dark areas gently melt together in areas.

How I Painted This New Zealand Landscape: Part 2
Переглядів 6 тис.4 місяці тому
This is part 2 of my Arrowtown Reflections painting demonstration. In Part 1, I set the foundation of the painting. Now, it’s time to go around and refine what’s on the surface, add some more intricate details, and bring it all together. All up, this part took about 6 hours, but I’ll distill it down to a few key steps and decisions. You can watch part 1 here: ua-cam.com/video/d48NBhZaqSw/v-deo....

The Painting Process: Big, Simple Shapes and Colors
Переглядів 15 тис.5 місяців тому
One of my best painting tips, no matter your skill level, is to focus on the big, simple shapes and colors at the start and reserve the more intricate and complex details until later in the painting. When you’re a beginner, you tend to go the other way. You get lost in the tiny details at the start of the painting and then you try to fix the big-picture aspects later on, but this is counterprod...
Painting an Autumn Landscape (Timelapse)
Переглядів 11 тис.6 місяців тому
This painting depicts Arrowtown in the South Island of New Zealand, about a 10-minute drive from Queenstown. Chontele and I spent our honeymoon there back in April. This will be the first in a series of paintings based on that trip. I used oil paints, brushes, and palette knives on 12 by 16 inch Ampersand Gessobord. My overall thoughts: It was a challenging subject, but I’m pleased with how it ...
Painting "Fallen Trees, Striking Contrast" (Timelapse)
Переглядів 24 тис.7 місяців тому
This was a surprisingly tricky painting, particularly around the water. It took around 5 hours all up. I used brushes, palette knives, and oil paints on Ampersand Gessobord. Most of the painting was done wet on wet, with a bit of wet on dry toward the end. One thing I did well with this painting was working fast at the start and getting most of it done whilst I felt in the zone. In prior painti...

Oil Painting Timelapse: Elora With Christmas Lights
Переглядів 17 тис.9 місяців тому
This is the most complex painting I've done to date. It's nighttime and Elora is illuminated by several different light sources of varying color and intensity. All up, the painting took about 17 hours, much of which was me tinkering with the subtle color relationships to get it just right. When painting your child, everything needs to be just right! I don't talk over the video, but it will give...

Absolutely love your style!
Love the colors and the technique ❤ nice work of art 👍
Amazing!
❤
Nice job! I loved that your underpainting is in red, the opposite of nature's greens! Thanks, Dan!
Lot of thanks to teach as It's superb. I learnt many things 🎉❤
Very much info. Are you working wet on wet ? I mean on red wet base.
That was one of the best landscape tutorials I have seen in a while. I really got a lot of the color theory comments you made . . . I could actually see the effects unfolding as you spoke through your actions !
Will you tell me if you are using oil or acrylic paints?
That was so helpful. I've recently transitioned over to oil paints from acrylic and am struggling somewhat. Now I know what I should do! Thank you so much. ❤
This helps! I love your color palette and your glass one, too.
Lovely video! Thanks for sharing your expertise. If you love this way of working you’d love the simplified way Ian Roberts does it on his channel, Mastering composition.
Thank you for this! I am trying to get looser. I'm mostly a portrait artist. I really appreciate your generosity!
Nicely done! Thanks for the lesson!
This was great! Thanks, Dan. I have a long way to go before I can translate what my eye is seeing to what my hand is doing...can you say Overwork? Your videos are most helpful and I'm most appreciative.
Thanks...very helpful! p.s. At least on my phone, until like the last 20 minutes, your video appeared very dark on the left side, esp with the darker paint used on that side....I could barely make out any of the painting you were doing there. I lightened my screen but it didn't make much difference. Just thought I'd pass this on. It may or may not be something within your control.
Your instructions are clear and very helpful. Thank you.
Thank you. This is very helpful.
Wonderful! You demonstrated the build up of foundation/structure very clearly.
That lesson was WONDERFUL. Thank you so much . Excellent !
Fantastic!
Show😊
Thank you. This was excellent
That's pretty
Enjoyed your technique. Just watched the video. Plan to paint it tomorrow. It's nearly 5pm now
It's amazing to see you bring life to this painting ❤
Awesome!
Well done Dan 👍👍👍
Love your O’Reilly Sunset. I wonder if O’Reilly is any relation? Mary O’Reilly. 😂
I always enjoy watching your timelapse paintings, and having the reference photo as an inset really helped - thankyou :)
Love the Chopin in the background!
Dear Dan you are an inspiration to our Joyful Art Journey Group, Art as Therapy on Friday's. I reference your work and your suggestions often. Thank you for sharing your world.
Amazing 👏👏👏 ❤❤
It's like a little orange light filtering through the clouds.
When you switched to the brush, together with the music, it looked like you were CONDUCTING your masterpiece! Well done! 😮
Hey! I thought the same! 😅
Sorry --typo. ---to purchase a regular supply of oil paint from o/seas is agonising !
Here in Africa is hard together a regular supply of decent quality paint --but we soldier on regardless !
That pallet knife effect with oils is quite striking ---well done ---lotsa hard work involved !
Wow!
Soo beautiful! Thank you 😊
Portraits are what pays the bills
Thanks so much - just found your youtube channel. I am newly retired and have purchased a couple of your courses - I am a stone cold beginner but have always felt I have a painter hiding inside of me. I love to frame my photos as if I am going to come back and paint them. My Christmas list is all painting supplies!
thank you, Dan; inspiring and instructive; a step by step work of art; you have given me a whole new world of the palette knife.
Do you have a reference picture you are using? Beautiful
Thank you, I always find your advise very helpful!
Striking gorgeous painting! Thank you.
Thanks, Dan. Love your generous demos!
❤❤❤
Why do you start with th crimson background when it all gets painted out?
Good question. It is mostly to help me judge the colors. It also gives me the option to leave parts of it exposed, though I don't always exercise that option. That red tree in the back is mostly the surface color showing through.
Thank you for sharing such a lovely painting. It was fascinating to watch you paint it.
