Tahuna Torea Nature Reserve
Tahuna Torea nature reserve
Tahuna Torea nature reserve is located on New Zealand's North Island,
at Wai o Taiki bay on the banks of the Tamaki river close to Glendowie.
The car park is at the bottom of West Tamaki road. All the tracks is about
7km combined and will take roughly 2 hrs starting from the car park,
just note that the track from Cable Beacon Point to the spit is only
accessible during low tide.
The Tamaki river is tidal, so best views will be during high tide,
at low tide... you can expect quite a dramatic change in scenery.
But low tide also creates a whole different experience when a long
sand bank extending out into the Tamaki Estuary opens up towards
Bucklands Beach. And its also during this time that you can cross
the mudflats back to Cable Beacon Point, just be aware that you have
a good chance of getting shoes wet crossing over streams.
The walk starts beside a freshwater pond where you can observe ducks
and Pūkeko feeding. The boardwalk curves over a small swamp of flax and
cabbage trees, taking you past the lagoon walk to Sandspit beach.
The reserve also offers a bush walk with lookouts to observe birds in
the lagoon and views over the sandspit.

Caught by the tide at Motukaraka Island, Beachlands
just writing a song about this place. can I please use some of your footage,
@@heavykev42 thanks for reaching out Kevin, yeah I'm all good with it as long as the footage is credited. Cheers Adian
Toka-Toka peak is named after family on my Grand dads mother's side, they were master carvers back in the day. My Grandfather was the publican at the Ruawai pub for many years until he passed away in 1975. At the 4-minute mark of this video, the hill at the bottom next to the river is an old ancient burial ground. When I was a child, there used to be a lot more bush, my Nanna and Grandfather used to do a lot of hunting and fishing around these parts, all the way up to Tinopai. I haven't been back home for a visit in four decades, thank you Adian you made me home sick.
Hey John, wow that's amazing, you have great history there mate! I was born in '75😉, glad I could take you down memory lane a little 😁
I never new that New Zealand has small mountains and not just the bigger more dramatic ones that people know all about .
Yeah NZ has a bit of everything, although this is not a mountain but actually a dormant volcano called Mangere Mountain
to correct it, it is actually called The Cascade Path. The Cascade Walkway is located in Waitakere Park.
the name is quite confusing. So just to make it clear, this is Cascade Walkway, also called Cascade Path, the other one in Waitakere is called Cascade Kauri Walkway-_-!
All good mate
Yes maybe pure to sell in bottles for profit but little or none has gone back into the iwi but company pockets. So sad a statistic its happening everywhere
Very true mate!
Did you use iPhone to film it? The quality of the footage is amazing 😊
Thanks Regina, not an iPhone though, used a Canon 5D Mark3 on a gimbal (Ronin S)😁
Beautiful place.
Sure is mate
Nice footage and I liked the music and minimal commentary. Very nice!
Thanks Sandra, glad you liked it😁

Pathetic vidio of that beach ,what were you trying to point out???
Nothing in particular, clearly not what you wanted to see

@@B1g_Salad thanks for the kind words mate!

The mount is definitely the most beautiful part of tauranga along with papamoa which is the largest suburb of tauranga it has a stretch of long sandy beach
Nice depiction of the walk! By the way there is a better swimming hole at the top of the falls.
Thanks mate, yeah I went up there later on, stunning spot with an amazing view
I used to live b/w Tauranga and Mount 18 yrs ,and every beautiful, sunny day i just go for walk around mount ,scenery just mindblowing, breathtaking, most beautiful days of my life ,just like a Paradise.
That must have been awesome mate! Such a beautiful place
A very refreshing virtual walk. The Nikau Palms look gorgeous and nice music choice
Tnx mate, glad you liked it
Hi Adian, I stumbled on your channel whilst browsing through stiff to do in NZ, and browsing for info. My son is in process with final step of workvisa. Waiting for decision now. Job offer from Auckland.
Hi Anslin, that sounds great mate. We stayed in Auckland for about 9 years, got made redundant mid last year, we moved down to the South island now. Hope you enjoy some of the vids 😁 I took a bit of a break in making bew videos, still sussing out the South island, much more scenic but the weather is something to get used to though
@@adianvanderwalt6329 Ohk. I believe it's rather cold on South Island? Adian, a question I am struggling with... Do you know if legislation changed pertaining to someone being on vacation via holiday visa in NZ...can person seek employment whilst there with accredited employer, and start visa application proceedings whilst there?
@@MrAnslin1 this is a tough one for me to answer, the rule constantly change, and I'm totally out of touch with this. But as far as I know, they stopped the holiday visa, you now have to apply for a visa before coming to NZ. I also heard people (South Africans) have to apply for work and all that from SA now. I have heard of people coming here for a interview, but had to go back to apply from SA. Your best bet is to check with a licenced immigration agent, they will have the hard facts
@@adianvanderwalt6329 Thank you Sir. I'll listen by the attorney who handles my son's application.
walked this a few weeks back - wow, they have so industrialised the track now....looks nothing like this. That said, steps take their toll, I walked down into the valley, to Kare and back the step way. With a good few kilos in my pack. Don't underestimate this track, it's not a Sunday stroll. BTW - nice sounds! <><
Thanks mate, yeah that was an awesome track, this was done before they closed it due to Kauri die back, I can only imagine what it looks like now, probably like the Omanawanui track. Definately not a Sunday stoll, we got caught with not having enough water lol
One of my favourite places to go.love the railway tunnel too
Sure is a great place mate
looks like forge world from halo Reach
O ok, I only know it to be as one of the locations used in Narnia
Thank you. I am inspired by your story. I hope I can live here too soon.
Tnx and good luck mate👌🏻
Do you need permission to go in there?
Hi mate, nah no permission, there were some gates on some side roads, forestry I guess but plenty other little roads to drive
What was the road you took to get to the offroad section? Thanks
@@nmgottschalk its at the end of conical peak road which is off waiwhiu road in the dome valley
Appreciate it! Heading in there now
Beautiful..
Tnx mate😁
lovely video

Fabulous footage capturing Tahuna Torea's magic beautifully - well done.
Tnx Maria😁
Great clip, I used this road many many times and it was a magnificent drive, they experienced a few land slips and had to block the road for a while but it may been cleared by now? Thanks for posting
Tnx mate, yeah I believe they have slips there from time to time
@@adianvanderwalt6329 just out of curiosity do you know how long the actual road is? I’ve heard roughly 20kms but I haven’t verified it? Thanks
@@jaseluffs9512 to be honest I can not remember but would say 18-20km

Tnx mate, no worries
I'm so proud to be a kiwi I don't live in the coramandel but my dad was born and raised there so me my mum and dad would visit once a year over the Christmas holidays which is summer in New Zealand. I haven't been for years now though would love to go back again one day so fucking beautiful in the coramandel.
Well said Harriet, its pure magic, was one of our favorite places to go to, we have moved to the South island now, new adventures to have and places to see, but the Coramandel will always have a very special place in heart :-)
I will still support the springboks after I become a citizen of NZ
I have no doubt about that👌🏻
We will be applying for citizenship later this year South Africa doesn't have opportunities like NZ. Though certain things are easier in SA but I'd much rather be in NZ and love the opportunities I've got her as I've study organic vegetable farming and being a farmer in SA is A NO.
That is too right mate
How are the seals holding up after a few years?
Hi there, not too bad I guess, the glue on some of the seals came loose and I had to re-apply double sided tape, those corner pads also came loose at some point, those I glued back with silicone which worked much better for me. As I still have the soft tonneau cover fitted with the floppy bit on the rear, as in the video, I still get dust in that way, but I have found the 2 big culprits from where the most dust comes from now... firstly, I found there were no plastic cover above the rear wheels causing dust, sand and water been thrown up by the wheels into the cavity which then ends up inside the tub. I fixed this by making fiberglass covers that sorted that out. Secondly, I found that the water drain on the tub's floor now lets in most of the dust. This is on the floor way back against the cab, the corrugated floor stops about 2mm from the rear wall, that is where it lets water flow out, but in turn, a lot of dust comes in there. My plan now is to seal the whole tub's inside with Raptor coat or similar product and then get a canopy and find a way to create positive pressure inside canopy. That should then sort the dust issue :-)
@@adianvanderwalt6329 thanks for the heads up. I ordered a kit and before it comes i will make some brakets to fix those corner pieces to permanently using the bolt below, instead of waiting for the glue to fail. As for the tub, my liner is 1 solid piece so i shouldn't have those issues but I will see next time i go offroad. Thanks for video and your reply, it has helped heaps
@@frostilicus4300 no worries mate :-) Just a side note, the seal kit plays a big part, but also find a way to get positive pressure inside the tub, that seems to be the key to keep dust out completely.
Very relaxing video thank you for the sharing 😇
Thanks, glad you liked it😁
I walked this track hundreds of times as I was growing up in Glen Innes
Hey maye, it really is a beautiful place
Shush beautiful content!!!! If I have to make the choice over again, it will be New Zealand 💯!!!! Don’t be fooled !!!! It’s tough, but worth every tear and acceptance you have to go through!!! The saying goes: “Africa is a tough country. If you can’t join them f&ck them.” This journey is not for the faint hearted. Glad to be a Kiwi❣️
Tnx Heidi, glad you like the content😁. Very true, and yes, I totally agree, best decision we have ever made!

Hey George, glad you liked it, sounds like you have some good memories from there?
Nice video I’m from New Zealand as well are you guys South African L
Tnx Victoria, yeah we sure are ☺
Is there anywhere to camp out in your 4WD along the way?
I'm really not sure mate, I would think not, private properties and forestry all the way through
I'm from New Zealand, even though we can't travel and my passport is little bit of a paperweight currently.. this video shows the privilege of being from this beautiful country <3
Hey Michael, yeah it sure is a privilege being here mate, I love New Zealand! Never looked back.
Can we take a pushchair?
Hi Norman, I would believe its not recommended as there is not a clear path to the viewing platform. I recall the start of the walkway to be nice and even, but became steap when turning towards the falls with lots of leaves on the path making it a bit slippery too and think there were a few rocks to navigate along the track, I think it should be possible if you have 2 strong individuals front and back of the chear, and depending on their confidence to control and pick the chair up over rocky parts, it should be doable, I do think it bacome a bit rocky/slopey near the viewing platform that will be challenging.

Wow great and both heart warming and heart wrenching. Knowing you're going to start a new life and the same time leave your whole life and family behind. But mindset yes! Determination and commitment. Glad you mentioned NZ migration and makes me feel more comfortable too.Im also with them currently still in stage 1. Hey Peter, thank you and very well said. I will keep my thumbs very tight for you, I know its now a lot harder than when we came over
Hi there, congratulation on the citizenship. I’ve also applied for citizenship since December 2020, however still no responses from DIA. How long did your application take to get approval and then how long extra till ceremony? Thanks
Hi mate, ours was relatively fast, just a couple of months, BUT keep in mind ours were done way back in mid 2019, total different story now I've heard, I am no expert, just what I hear people say, backlogs at immigration and people mentioning delays with citizenship applications too
@@adianvanderwalt6329 thanks 🙏 for your kind response. I’ve just looked it up, the official processing timeframe has been changed again to 7-12months. Holy moly DIA. O' yes, its still very much alive, in fact, we were told that the tree has shown even a little more growth with its latest measuring
Kia ora, this tree is alive, I am from this beautiful land, the forest is called Waipoua, this is the home for tane mahuta, he is the tree that gave us the breath of life and bought light to our land/ earth.
