Very interesting, Annette. Love those doors! As it gets colder out, I would love to see something about your planning process, ordering and how you stay inspired without a blooming garden.
Good morning Annette, plants are all so expensive and I try my best (at times :)) to take care, following your instructions re storing the tubers will prevent a lot of disappointment later on when it is planting time. Actually, all bulbs etc., that needs to be lifted should be stored in this manner. Gardening is much work, then again, as I said plants are all pricy and we should be more thrifty in collecting and saving. It is dahlia planting time here and the ones I had in buckets I found the tubers were not very big, so I separated them, checked to see that they are healthy and re-potted them into new containers and soil. I think I will feed them well every two weeks and depending on how they respond I am going to plant them into the prepared beds. For me it works much better. We do not get winter rains so we can leave the tubers in and we do not get heavy frost for the soil to freeze underground. Oh, I am in South Africa. Looking forward to a nice show of dahlias, I really just love them, they are so rewarding with just a little tender loving care. Have a beautiful day, hope the winter in Britain will not be too harsh, we are waiting for our rains to come, bad storms in the Northern parts of the country, hail like golf balls, I have so much empathy with those people, I am trusting we will be spared that damage. Many blessings.
Hi there, sorry it's taken me so long to reply. Thank you for your lovely message all the way from South Africa! I hope you didn't;t have too much hail and storms 😊🌸
Hi Annette, thank you so much for all the storage information. I have only tried storage dahlia once and they all went rotten. Watching you, I can see that I made so many mistakes.
Hello. I appreciate you making the distinctions about how many ways there are and how to choose. I used to just “do whatever” without realizing that my conditions dictate success. It’s horribly dry here so it’s tricky to keep them from shriveling up but also not getting carried away with trying to give them humidity! Ugh. I guess as long as I don’t put them away damp I have a chance. I have had some success in the past. Thank you for the in depth video
This is most helpful. I live where it is moist (pretty soggy lately) but where I can store them free from frost is very dry. My tubers have shrivelled over winter before. I will need to be wrapping them somehow. I have heard of waxing them. You mentioned plastic wrap - I may try used vegetable bags instead- the ones with holes in them. Reuse recycle etc. 😊
H Annette. I've watched all your previous dahlia videos, but this is still interesting. Thank you. I us\e produce bags from the supermarket as they are a very competitive price at only 30p each, which means 10 only cost £3.00. I hope that helps any viewers. I stored some of my unimportant dahlias this way last year- my first time- and I wanted to see how it would go. Well. as you know, they all came through ok. My other special dahlias,I stored as I usually do, leaving them in their pots and let the soil dry, not watering at all until I saw growth in the Spring. This always works but takes up so much space. So, having experimented with the wood shaving method, I am now going to over winter all my dahlias in wood shavings. Thanks for introducing this method to em last year. Cosmos is looking so cut in the video. Happy gardening 🙂
Hi Be, sorry it's taken me so long to reply. Great idea to use produce bags - I think they would be too small for many of my dahlias 🤣 but they would be much cheaper - I'm going to get some for the smaller ones - thank you! 😊🌸
@@cottoverdi Oh, I think they re quite big. I have just put a huge tuber in one. I did trim the stem right down though. and the wiry roots.. I never split my dahlias- too frightened to attempt- even with your excellent tutorials. I am worried I might damage the plants beyond repair, lol. Happy growing 🙂
@@cottoverdi Oh, I found them big enough. I have just bagged a very large tuber up. I did cut down the stem and , wiry roots though. I never split my tubers- absolutely terrified to do that, despite watching your excellent video tutorials. I am worried I will irreparably damage the plants and have to buy new, which would be expensive. After years of lugging huge pots in and out of the workshop for winter storage of my plants, I finally became brave enough to de-pot the tubers and store them in pet shavings as you taught us. It worked great- not one tuber lost and it gave me the confidence to repeat the practice this year. Thank you so much. Happy gardening 🙂
Good morning Annette ❤ I have been waiting on this video. I have my dahlias drying waiting to be stored. Can I ask what you use to sharpen and oil your snips etc. Love Juliana from Devon
Most of my dahlias in containers are still in leaf, only 1 or 2 have died back enough to put into storage, the ones in the ground have died back, I'm going to leave them there and cover them with big pots and mulch. I'm planning on storing all my container dahlias the same as you in crates, but with straw instead of shavings. I was going to try and over winter 1 dahlia as it's putting on growth right now, even have a lot of flower buds forming, not sure if it's possible to keep a dahlia in growth completely over winter though.
Hi there, I should also have mentioned that you don't need to wait for your dahlias to die back or get hit by frost - you can store them at a time that works best for you, so if you've had enough of them this season, then just chop them down, dry them out and put them into storage 😊👍🏼
I've oredered my first 14 tubers yesterday. I can't wait! Thank you for all the inspiration and information.
That is awesome! Have fun 😁
Thank you Annette, this is exactly the instructional video I was looking for!
You are so welcome. Glad it was helpful 😊

Great idea Kat, thank you. I will have a think about how best to film this process 😊
Thank you for sharing this and showing how to divide the tubers
You are so welcome Linda 😊
These Dahlia storage /care videos are so helpful Thank you! I save them all.
You are so welcome Carol, I'm glad you like them 😊🌸
Thank you for sharing this. It’s the first time I’ve grown dahlias. I’ve learned a lot from this video.
Glad it was helpful! 😊🌸

Hi Leslie, yes, dry conditions are almost as much trouble as our damp conditions. I hope you have a successful storage season! 😊🌸

Glad it was helpful Leah. It's always worth trying something new because it might work. 🌸😊
Thank you. Really helpful video.

Hi Juliana, I use Niwaki sharpening tools to sharpen my snips but sadly I'm not very consistent! 🤣😊
