Studio Drum Cover Bon Jovi, Living on a Prayer
A studio drum cover for living on a prayer. This was while I was rehearsing this song for a cover band a while back. I mixed the audio and paired with the video. Enjoy!

Comparison of Neve 1073, MIDAS 502 & SSL SiX Channel
Excellent. You should play this one with your band!
I agree
awesome stuff
Tbh… the Midas takes eq and compression really good from what I could tell with the examples given. Considering the price difference, the MIDAS is the winner to me.
Thanks! Such a great tutorial. For a band with a backing track this is perfect. Otherwise, I would just set up a cue cart and trigger by hand. Would be great to have an AI assist that could run cues based on FFT analysis of audio input, but I am dreaming. For now.
Thanks for the comment.👍
SSL Six has amazing preamps sound, are the same preamps at SSL2 or SSL2+? Does anybody knows?
No idea
Hi amazing video, can you link the cables for patching the splitters to FOH and XR18v
The vid was a couple of years ago. I think they were hosa brand off amazon, but I cannot find them now sadly.
How didnyou elimnate hum and noise in the behringer ms8000
No hum or noise in regular use for a couple of years - its s great splitter.
Great video. Does it work on stereo source?
It has a single input, so you would need to “sum” the stereo source to one mono input first. The stereo output is very “lush”!
Night and day, thank u for this
Gain levels of the backing tracks aren't set the same. The backing tracks are much louder during the Neve recording! Should have gain matched because I think the Focusrite is crisper with better high end...and a better gain match with the background would have shown this.
They were the same tracks on the same file at the same level. The drums were differently recorded, and obviously were levelled at a mix level by ear. The intention was not for it to be a “scientific” test - more a “flavour”and sound comparison. Thanks as always for your comment though.
Do the screws have nuts behind them or do they just screw in and stay put? I'm trying to build my own iem rig but duct realize he tech savvy one must be to build one
Depends on the rack case. The “gator” style ABS have screws that have a threaded hole. Some racks (often the heavier wooden and metal ones) have a square hole on the rack where a nut springed holder is placed and the screw goes into that. The benefit of the second approach is that if something gets cross threaded, it can be replaced. In the non nut version - if cross threaded that hole is now unusable. The drawback of the nut (second) approach is that they can be VERY fiddly to place! Hope that helps!
What input and output sensitivity do you have set on the dante avio adapter on the Neve 1073? I want to use these on the Rupert Neve Masterbus Processor, is the audio quality not affected in any way?
Not 100% sure what you are after. The 1073OPX has selectable headroom of +18/24/26 (I have it on the 18), but the Avio has no sensitivity as it purely provides a transition from the analog out on any device output into the dante network, where it can be routed to one or more locations, or if the avio is an output adapter, then into some output such as a monitor controller, amp, hardware input etc The converson on the audinate products is excellent. All products with dante will have audinate chips. So any input /output levels or sensitivity is set on the sending/receiving device. Apologies if this is information you already know, and obvious. The workflow of Dante has transformed how I work, so I would strongly recommend. Thanks
Neve is saturated and fits nicely in mix. Focusrite are transparent and clean. Both are great, choose your color.
Great comment and summary
Wow. Love the Neve. It’s so full and honest. Focusrite still sounds good, but lacks the class and depth.
I tend to agree - I think its the low end. Thanks for the comment.
Great - many thanks!
это не дешёвая система, просто у западных производителей цены завышены на свою продукцию
I take your point. Cheaper than others maybe… thanks for commenting!
Question. We have the xr 18 and 1 splitter this one we have. But we loss a lot of db in our in ears what do we do wrong😢
Difficult to say without looking in person. Make sure the input gain on the mixer is at a good level, set to 0db (although some people will set at -6), and then have a good signal that is green on the meter and only occasionally peaks into yellow. I assume your in ears are fed through a bus, so just make sure the levels to the buss are good. Are you using cables to a headphone amp, or to a wireless box. The headphone side needs to be active to amplify the line level signal (I know its obvious but just checking), some wireless in ears will also have a gain knob you can turn up. Use good cables. They dont need to be mega expensive - for live stuff I use visiosound or stagg, cheap but good quality. Hope this helps. Also splitter does have ground lift and link buttons - make sure these are off unless you want them on…
Have you had any issues with interference, having 3 iem transmitters and aerials in the same rack?
We have actually gone over to P-16 personal monitors now, but there was not an issue. I think there can be , and a combiner with a separate antenna is always best if you can afford it. I tried to space them i. The box as much as I could.
That's the conclusion that we have come to, that we need to go with a combiner and antenna - how are the P-16s?@@tmmmusicstudio
Superb. Just superb. Both bands i play with use them. I use them for theatre pit stuff i do, and I have a P-16i and two in the studio too. They are great
Hi, nice video, it gave me quite a few ideas for my own rack case. Just one question how did you attach wireless router to the top of the IEM transmitter?
I use strong super strength velcro from amazon. There are probably more elegant and technological solutions… its not fallen off yet amzn.eu/d/dBFHnkL
PSA tip here-when using a single screw to hold your rack component in place, use the lower hole. Less likely to damage the ear.
Thank you
Talent matters the most. No one care for your gear.
I agree - the singer, performance and in the case of instruments , the instrument and tuning are the key aspects, but many people are interested if there is significant difference if you spend more money on expensive gear, and if there is a perceived difference, how big it is. Often you can tell a slight difference, but ultimately such a lot of the difference is ones own taste and opinion. I hope this helps with the reasoning behind the video. I think many people ARE interested in comparisons of equipment from the same source. Thanks
Thank you for making this video. I appreciate you using music and a performance that is uncompressed, dynamic, and lyrical. Both preamps sound very good, but I found Neve had the best overall performance for this segment. It sounded a bit smoother and had the most complementary color.
We need more channels like this, I am listening on some monitors, m-audio bx5 in a non treated room. I don't hear much of a difference. They both sound good and usable, which is the main goal in recording either way.

I can't read comments. Thank you for your answer. I got the information about the lighting. I think the machine I'm talking about is using Artnet. The Artnet you are telling me is out of stock and out of production. There are various products in Aliexpress too, so can I use those?
@magicianbenson possibly yes. I have been looking at getting a spare and there are some on ebay. Not sure which country you are in, but here in the UK we have legislation around items being bought on the internet being “fit for purpose” so if it does not work you can return by law. Maybe check you have a returns policy for the item… You may have to change the computer network settings too - fairly sure that was in the video - but another unit may be different…
Yes - ArtNet is a protocol and you can get different brands. They will all work well.
I just remembered why i sold the opx 😂
Are you not keen on the sound, operation? Personally I love the sound and the connectivity
@@tmmmusicstudio i didn't like the sound, very 2 dimensional and not what i want out of a 1073. I'm using 1073lb, heritage and BAE now.
Ok, fair viewpoint. I love the sound, and I record a lot of drums, so having 8 channels in one unit is a bonus
link case?
Do you mean is the brand link?
@@tmmmusicstudio Yes, case link please

Did you know you can test your IEM´s ... see Finnur Ragnarsson, mon tech for Björk talka bout the MiEMi - ua-cam.com/video/2KFUT-nHqjI/v-deo.html
Helpful, thank you!
SSL FTW! Notice the smoothness of the sibilance with SSL as compared to the others ... and the "jumps out the the speakers vibes"....
But … listening to your recordings - there is a HUGE difference. From daw it is stereo, and from iem100 it is mono. This Maker a huge difference. Why did you not computer stereo to stereo? I am curious
The main thing I wanted to illustrate was the difference of using a cheap in ear set compared to the actual output, to see what the difference was. Musicians who cannot afford expensive in ears kit, will probably employ a wired solution from a headphone or via an output though a headphone amplifier, and the idea was to show the difference that you would actually get employing these units. Your point is a fair point to make though. Thanks
@@tmmmusicstudio I would really have like to hear The comparison stereo to stereo or mono to mono. But I appreciate your effort 👍
My issue is that I want to know What The difference in Sound quality is between a cheat set and an expensive set. Most reviews are about features and distance - not Sound quality 😲
Thanks for sharing this - your vid, and this comment section have given me all sorts of ideas!
Good test. I was surprised there was such a huge difference in sound quality tbh. Still, better than no IEM. Still thinking... Thanks
I'd ditch the splitters and get a Midas DN4816-O box. It would mirror channels 1-16 (or whatever) on Ultranet for FoH.
Yep I have looked at that - just a cost issue as it is a few hundred pounds, which I have not got at present! It is a great solution though. The splitter also protects the x32 sockets from damage as well…
On the Behringer splitter (MS8000) which output goes to XR18 and which output goes to FOH?
The link connection goes to the rack mixer so that 48v phantom (for DI box and drum overhead condenser mic) can be controlled from mixer, and the transformer side split goes to the cable for passing to a FoH PA, or we would also use it for our backup mixer… Thanks
@@tmmmusicstudio thank you - in reading the MS8000 manual, I found that part confusing. What about the warning here: "WARNING! Be careful when using phantom power on linked channels. If two linked channels both have phantom power sources connected to their respective LINK OUT XLR jacks, phantom-powered mics or DI boxes may receive too much current." I don't think we will be using the link function in a traditional in ear mixer setup as we need 1:1 inputs/outputs for all the different instruments. Any information you can provide would be of great help! THNX!
@DavidMacVicar did not see that but seems reasonable if linked, however I am not sure of a practical use of the channel linking. I’ll dig out the manual and take a look - thanks
If $ wasnt option i prefer the neve sounds full… midas i dont like for same price i say ssl
Have you had any issue with double size modules in your midas L10?
The only double size module I currently use is a bettermaker compressor. Works fine, no noise. I highly rate midas gear, and I think there is a definite problem with “behringer bashing” in the music world, and now Behringer own Midas, they are subject to that. With any company which uses large manufacturing plants, there will be the odd unit with a quality control problem, but generally Midas gear (and behringer - as I use X32 X18 and P-16s for my live work) is just excellent. Im waiting for a AMS Neve RMX16 reverb, to be delivered, so I will do a vid on that when it arrives.
Some people may be confused that they are hearing a Neve 1073 in this comparison because it's not clearly labeled. You're not hearing a Neve 1073, you're hearing an OPX. The OPX uses surface mount components and the board inside is like a PC motherboard. The OPX circuit is very different from a 1073, OPX uses transformerless output stages and modern power buffering stages, it's radically different from a 1073. OPX is a good unit. They are actually more detailed than a 1073, but they do not have 1073 saturation.
Maybe you should let AMS Neve know, as their description clearly describes it as such: www.ams-neve.com/outboard/1073-range/1073opx/ Admittedly its not a vintage 1073, but I would dispute whether it deserves the 1073 title. Its probably open for debate, open for opinions, and differing opinions create good dialog, however, in my opinion it sounds great and is a very flexible unit. Thanks for your comment none the less, your opinion is as valid as mine 👍
Here is a excellent review of the 1073 OPX and it particularly discusses the lack of OP transformers. ua-cam.com/video/PFFt-qFN3Sw/v-deo.html
What about phantom power, is there an issue with it? the splitter passes the current?
Most (or many) splitters work by having a true wired link and a second transformer link. As long as your mixer or source of phantom power is on the true link, then it passes. So when we play in a venue with a managed PA we give the PA the transformer split, and control the phantom power ourselves. Hope this helps.
Thank you ! Very useful! I'm just building my own mount rack.
Greetings, I stumbled across UA-cam searching for information on Dante and your video is very helpful as it is similar to the application I have in mind for my setup. The question I have is; How well can your external hardware be used similar to a plug-in? Also is it more advantageous to route each hardware device individually to the network? For example I have a 1073 routed into a distressor in my vocal chain. If I route them individually to the network and utilize the virtual mixer to route them can I expect the same results? Thanks
Essentially, yes you can as long as they are single devices, but not from one channel “out” to an “in” of the same multi-channel device. Hope that makes sense… I am using a lot of 500 series where you can link (in most units) between channels to create a chain, and then send into DAW. I am about to do a vid of the use of Dante for outboard, from DAW… watch this space. The routing is the main reason I have used Dante.
@@tmmmusicstudio Thank you.
Don't know why, but something is happening with the SSL. Damn that thing is great :O and so inexpensive

How much U did this take up?
Its a 6 U case but one of the Units is slightly restricted by the concealed wheels housing and a concealed housing. So that restricted unit is used for cable passes etc
That intro song is amazing!
I did not understand the purpose of the splitters...sorry. Can't we go from the mixer AUX directly into each IEM device? What am I missing?
No worries, the splitter is so that a duplicate of the signals can be fed to a front of house desk if playing a larger gig with engineered PA. This allows the band to retain control of in ear mix. Apologies if not clear from vid. A valid question though.
Neve & ssl is for rock and rap music not so much for singers singers needs to sound smooth & less harsh & annoying so the Midas wins for me when it comes to singing vocal.
Thanks for the comment. I like the Midas, and im planning to try it on some drums, guitar and bass…
The Midas DN4816-O makes the splitter unnecessary. Use the ultranet out from the mixer to the DN4816, which requires one shielded CAT cable and provides 16 XLR outs.
Indeed it does. Very good point. I don’t think this was available at the time I built the rack, but it is something I have looked at, thanks. I also use my split now for a backup mixer - connected with xlr to db25 at the splitter, and then a db25 to mixer pre connected, so I just have to plug in. I also have a separate db25 to xlr for connecting to a managed PA if needed. If the DN4816 is used, if the mixer failed, it would not work…. I always like a backup plan!
But the costs is 4x over the splitter
Can you explain how this makes a splitter unnecessary? I don't understand. Thanks!
@@DavidMacVicar Midas DN4816-O: this takes the ethernet cable out from the Midas and converts it to 16 channels of XLR in a separate rack box.
the Behringer can do that through Ultralink too.
Hi, I had a look on ebay at the power strip that you're using. Is it possible to flip the rack ears so that the power outlets are facing the interior of the rack?
Unfortunately not. Its a fairly cheap unit that provides surge protection only, and the rack ears are fixed. You might be able to mount it on the inside of a very thin rack shelf, as it is only 7 or 8 cm wide. I have it facing outwards as I plug the Artnet light interface and laptop into it at the gig.
@@tmmmusicstudio Thanks a lot for the info!
Just had a look on ebay. Mine is a metal frame which goes along the whole strip, but there are some that look like there are rack ears that could be reversed. Mine is poss 7 years old, so probably not available now
