Gong Fu saying: One day missed is ten days hard work lost

There is a Gong Fu saying: One day missed is ten days lost.....well, maybe and maybe not. I had a bad rotator cuff injury in my shoulder back at the beginning of September which forced me to lay off for a while. I could hardly lift my arm at first. Just getting back to practice now. Thought that it would be a good time to test the above saying since I had not practiced the staff form for so long.

Every year on my birthday, I post a video that shows something about my long fitness journey going into older age. Since I recently posted a video of me doing Cha Chuan in 2015, nine years ago at age 69, I though it would be perfect to show me doing the same form today on my birthday at age 78. While gathering material for editing, I happened upon a video showing me performing Cha Chuan way bac...

Master Kuo Lien Ying was famous for his Old Yang Guang Ping Taiji, but he taught Northern Shaolin as part of his curriculum at Portsmouth Square in San Francisco during the 1960's to 80's. The demonstration of the second form, Cha Chuan was filmed in 2015 at our ranch in Cobb, California by my son, Yuan. It is a good representation of what Master Kuo taught. So I should strive to punch when the foot comes down on the last move? Thank you for the lesson!
Yes, when the left foot comes across for the foot sweep and accentuates the counter torque for the right punch.
@@randallfung5457 a little like stork dries wings in the tai chi form, right?
@ SImilar, but in stork cools wings in the step to the right, the power goes right with the elbow, but in this cha Chuan move, the strike goes forward so the left foot is counter torquing.
@ Got it! Thank you!
These are great🙏
You are welcome, and thank you for preserving the traditional Chinese Martial Arts as well!
I learned this version over 10 years ago outside of Seattle from Colin Berg, a wonderful teacher. Thank you for adding this video primarily because I haven't yet found a group with whom to practice since moving from the PNW to the east coast. I'm now in Western NC and would love to find a class or instructor. Thanks!
Condolences 💐 MOs def.

Beautiful form. Beautiful part of the world. Beautiful Animals 😊
Excellent! Great lesson, thank you for taking the time to explain the details. New Year, new form!
So happy to listen to the stories of Guang Ping Taiji lineage.
Many more stories yet to tell!
An auspicious start to 2025. Great to see!
Yes. brother, looking forward to a great year!
The story of a lineage reminds me that building community through the transmission of sincere skill is a blessing for all
Thank you. Indeed we are trying to build a community on this channel for all to share.
Great that you have started teaching Kuo Lien Ying's Northern Shaolin, Cha Chuan. I am already looking forward to future lessons. Personally, I will start learning this form a little later. I want to improve my Tan Tui and Tai Chi forms before I learn something new. But your teaching videos are an integral part of my fitness program, for which I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Improving your tan tub will make the Cha Chuan better, and these lessons will be there when you are ready!
I watched the forms again, it's sure a good one for keeping the legs limber.....I'm tempted to learn it. Anyway, this year I want to learn a new form or a qigong set.
Yes Randy, do you have a qigong set you'd like to share? Please....
Just started the lessons on it, so it's a good time to jump on!

Awesome!! At your age, much respect to you!! My dad is 86 and he too exercises a lot and is fit.

You are a Classical Man, artist with wood, landscape and more, man of the land, kung fu, fitness, hippie and lethal in more ways that one. You have lived life well. Thank you for sharing You!
That made me smile and chuckle! THANKS!
Randall, I don't know where you live in Cal but we're praying for the folks in the LA area.
Thank brother for you thoughts. We live in Northern California so we are in the rainy period and safe. We only have to worry about fires in the summer. The valley fire of 2015, one of early fires to devastate entire communities started only five properties away from us and many homes around our were destroyed, but having donkeys that had kept the grass down saved the ranch. Much prayers for the people down south having to go through this now through the entire year!
@@randallfung5457 Figured out from your Other Persona video you're in or near Lake County. What I know of S Cal, it's made to burn. They get all that moisture at one time of year and the fuel grows like crazy then the rain stops, everything dries up then those San Anna winds blow in. Footage of embers blowing down the street at car speeds is frightening.
You're awesome Randall. I think your form at 78 is more graceful than the age 62 form. "Proud for you" as we might say in Texas.
Thank You!
Thank you for explaining the concept of drawing silk. I've heard about it but never could clearly understand it before seeing you demonstrate it.

Thank you for your continued support throughout this year. Still much to be covered!
Thank you for sharing and allowing us to learn and think when practicing.
Thank you, that is exactly the idea that I have been trying to present!
I once saw a demonstration of martial arts that included Yang Jwing-Ming. When the presenter asked Dr Yang if he would please "say a few words," Dr Yang stepped to the microphone and said, "Let's keep going!" And THAT is what I want to say to you. Your channel has covered a lot of gong fu territory in '24, and it's been a delight to follow, and a heady re-minder of much that I value. Let's keep going! Thanks for the help!
Thanks for you continued support, Walt. Yes, keep it going! Still have a lot of material to cover.
When I was working a show, putting in 60-70 hour weeks during Tech, I'd feel guilty for not practicing -- never realizing that striving to manage a stage impeccably was also gong fu. When injury or strain interrupted my practice, I'd try to push through, inevitably doing too much too soon -- a mistake that's caught up to me big time. When life upended my practice schedule or threw it out the window, I'd feel like a failure, like I was letting my teachers down. When I saw the title of this video, my heart sank a little. I've heard that maxim so many times and worked so hard to free myself from it. I was afraid it would be the same old thing: a guilt-trip about never missing a day. I should have known better. Every word you said was a balm to my heart. For years now, I've been letting my body tell me what to practice, when, and for how long. In a way, I've upped my practice by trying to apply gong fu principles to everything I do. I love the forms, the movements ... but I am ok with days where dancing takes the place of martial arts, where I only manage to squeeze in a line of Tan Tui or a few minutes of Universal Post, or even where my entire practice amounts to falling asleep while doing a set of Tai Chi in my mind. Thank you, Sifu Fung, for your wisdom and encouragement.
THANK YOU for the lovely story! Yes, Sifu Kuo would be so proud of all of us continuing the practice over so many years. Now it is time to enjoy, relax and let the practice of gong fu bond into our lives. There is nothing left to prove, just live it in your life.
You are very compassionate
))Clear heart, clear path to humongous buffet (and mulch )
I started Silat and Escrima in 1993. I started learning different styles of Tai Chi in 2008. I practice Double Tai Chi Sword, which is very rare. I've only heard of a few other people practicing it. Maybe others do, but don't teach or practice in public. I started practicing out on my porch during Covid.
It sounds like you have a rich martial arts background!
I was lucky. I dedicated my life to martial arts when I was 16 YO. I knew I wanted to be a martial artist.
13:30 Wise words.
Yes, indeed!
priorities have to be set! right now the only thing I practice is the tai chi form and standing meditation, I figure that's enough on my plate! yet on occasion I practice the first two lines of tam tui so I don't forget. Thank You
Great, good for you!
Shoulder injuries are very painful because of all the nerves there. It doesn't look like you bore any pain doing the staff form and that is good news. Thank you for your channel.
Thanks, yes, I've been extra careful in recovering not to overdo.
when you have something memorized it's easy to repeat it. Especially if you are still physically capable. If you can't physically practice due to severe injury....mentally practicing is powerful. To envision yourself doing the movements. Top athletes mentally visualize running through the routine in their minds.... in addition to physical practice. The saying has to do with atrophy and maintaining strength and memory. you definitely get weaker but not in a day more like 2 weeks. It's a saying so people do not become lazy and keep up training..... for the lazy young people who may not have things memorized yet.. or may not have yet developed adult strength. there is some truth to it but it's an exaggerated one.
Thank you for your input.
its always a wife....LOL
Right, I'm sticking to my story!LOL
It would be great to have a review at intervals or maybe a full go. I forget links between groups at times and it would be nice to have.
thanks for the suggestion. Will do!
@ thanks
Kuo sifu used to say: " Good seeds, strong roots, fragrant flowers...100 days the seeds, 1000 days the roots, 10,000 days the flowers"..10,000 days is roughly 30 yrs...[with 50 years in I am still refining and gathering flowers]
flowers only last less than a year. seeds can.... and roots last way way longer.... and 36,500 days a TREE!
The oak tree that fell this year measured 58 inches in diameter, so calculations show that it was over 300 years old! Sad to have it fall in my watch. Due to climate change and drought and bugs. Now, that is a long lifetime of growth.
That is a great saying from Sifu! You've clearly got the roots and flowers going strong. 👍
good job brother
You too, bro
Welcome back Dear Brother ❤❤
Good timing, I got your card today! Thanks and happy holidays.
I remember Simu telling us the "Miss one/Lose ten" formula; I was so enthralled at that time that I took it literally, and always felt guilty when I'd miss a practice. These days I am in accord with your approach -- altho . . . -- I recall Willie Nelson in his eighties saying that he jogged every morning for five minutes, not so much for the benefit but because it seemed to "pay for the day." And I thought, "That's about right." I've never practiced tai chi and felt worse, so I keep after it, as though it matters. Thanks for the discussion!
I saw Willie Nelson dressed in a black Gi and wearing a black belt, so he was talented on many fronts too!
I recall Prof. Chung teaching us the warm-up exercises and saying that you must do them 32 times on each side. I did that for many years. A long time ago I amended that dogma and developed my own set of warmups which included some of Prof. Chung's recommendations and some of my own. I practice "our" tai chi because I love the way it feels and the way it affects me in my life. I also practice a more conventional "softer" tai chi. There are days when I can't practice either. I am OK with that. I believe that we need to be the masters of our activities and not the slaves to them. Thank you for these videos. Thank you for sharing your personal experiences.
I learned from Prof. Chung also, during the Seventies. Do you still live in the Bay Area? I especially enjoyed learning his very unique version of Wu Style.
So glad that you found what works best for you. That is the true meaning of gong fu!
@@TaiChiGhost I used to live on California St. in Berkeley, a stone's throw from Prof. Chung's studio. Now I live in SF. Was there all morning from 1969 for a few years. In those days I tried to imitate Prof. Chung as well as I could. Now, I find I do it differently every day. Some days the moves are larger and further away. Some days they're smaller and closer in. Some days faster, slower. Harder or softer, depending on the weather and what my body tells me. I never know how I'm going to do it until I begin. After watching Sifu Fung's videos I now work on specific moves. Some times it's like learning all over again. I love it and I'm very grateful for Sifu's generosity. Lucky us!
Glad to see you back! I am reminded of your video about cultivating an “inner observer” that you can turn to for feedback about your life (not saying it well, but you’ll remember the lesson). I feel like that when that observer is engaged I am doing my gung fu, even if I am shopping at the market or gardening. Ideally, my life becomes my practice
EXACTLY! Now you are "living" your gong fu practice rather than just doing it.

@@randallfung5457 Some elders never get old. Respect.
Your wood and leather work is awesome. Really like your landscaping as well. Living in Northeastern Oklahoma, I've got access to Isage Orange and made a real sweet self bow that draws 65#.
Thanks 👍 Those bows of my grandfather were bamboo backed osage. I was told by experts not to string them because the glue they used in the old days was not good, and they would delaminate. 65# is heavy!
That's what's surprising, it's really not a heavy looking bow, it's got a little recurve but it's really light to carry and doesn't look beefy at all.
