G’day I'm Kate, an Ecologist, Hiker, UA-cam Creator, Speaker, Mum and Alone Australia Season one participant.
I’m passionate about the Australian environment and I hope to share this passion through my videos and encourage others to get outdoors and sleep under the stars.
I make videos on hiking, gear, skills and ecology. By sharing these videos I hope this helps you enjoy your time outdoors and connect with nature.
I welcome opportunities to connect with new audiences.
I get a lot of questions about the gear I use (see Gear link below). Some links are affiliate links so if you make a purchase it helps the channel out at no extra cost to you. Thanks

I may be a year late…..however my heart broke when Chris tapped out. I was rooting so hard for him. As a mother of 2 soldiers and another son who suffers from PTSD I know his struggles. I might be an American but sir I am here for you! Anytime you need an ear to listen or a shoulder to lean on. I will be gladly be that ear/shoulder.
So beautiful thanks for sharing. Such a hard think ptsd
I am watching the season on Netflix and was shook when she tapped out. I felt like the two females would be last two standing. I understand her tapping out but…dang. So close!
It’s a great show can’t wait for season 3
Hi Kate! I live in Brazil, in an area with lots of snakes, and it’s pretty common to come across them around here. The video is great, but the post-bite recommendations are quite different where I live. Covering or putting pressure on the bite area is not recommended at all. The advice is simple: wash the area with water and mild soap (if possible) and get to the hospital as fast as you can. Time is a key factor in the treatment. Another difference is that in the video, you recommend staying still and waiting for help. Here, it’s actually the opposite-you should move and get help, even if you’re in a lot of pain. Waiting for help, especially in remote areas, can make things much worse. I know we’re on different continents with different types of snakes, so I guess the recommendations vary depending on the region. Around 80% of snakebite incidents here involve Bothrops (Jararaca) species. Good luck and stay safe! Thanks for the video!
Thanks mate. Yeah wild to think I have an international audience now. I’ll be sure to put an “Australia” label in the vid. Cheers.

Thanks
Wow Lisa thanks a million. Your support means a lot.
Wow! What an awesome adventure, with great company too. And no flavours or beer and cocktail spared to make camp meals a special time too. Hope you had a quick recovery from the dreaded cold. So which piece of equipment did you lose? I think I saw the one you mean, attached to a shoulder-strap pocket, but not sure what it is... Sorry that happened again though...
It’s amazing to be able to get away and rediscover your love of hiking with a like minded person. It was a microphone. Darn thing.
@@KateGrarock TBH - I thought it might've been when the sound went a bit weird. Funny though, I spent some time trying to figure out what was wrong with my speakers. 😆 Till I realised it was the video... 😂 Damn though, sorry to hear the bush has claimed another piece of equipment... Glad you had back-up.
@ haha thanks mate
You two are so impressive exploring off the beaten track! I've never been quite brave enough to do that (except with peeps like Caro, who have navigation creds haha). Best of luck planning your big adventure for 2025. :)
Thanks a lot. Yeah it can be really hard but also rewarding. Was amazing having Caro to help. I didn’t realise what a mental load navigating was till I hiked with someone who is an expert and is I could take a back seat and it was so nice.
Ohh, this is fabulous! What a great video.- I'd taken a hiatus from hiking and your video has made me excited to go again. Thank you so much.
So glad it inspired you - always happy to share the love for the great gear. Enjoy and sing out if you have any questions
@@KateGrarock I have one question! Do you do anything special to your food storage to deter hungry non-humans from break-ins? I've never had a problem with this, except for in car camping spots - but I've seen pics of expensive tents destroyed by wombats/mice etc and am wondering if I should be more vigilant...
@ Ive been lucky and am pretty lazy but I think that's because I am off track and the critters haven't learnt to target humans. Best bet is to get a good food bag you could string up. I'm looking to get a dyneema food bag from ultralight hiker that I can hang from thin cordage from a tree (kinda like how they hang bear bags in the USA). I hope to do a few formal trails this year.
hiking has definitely changed my life . and now I am totally obsessed
How great is it.
Stunning Kate. What a great trip!
Thanks a lot! So glad you liked it.
Did that walk back in the 70’s when I lived in Bega with my father and a bloke by the name of Jack Miller. It was a memorable experience on a special stretch of coastline.
Wow so amazing to hear. Would have been amazing back then
Wow, absolutely fantastic! Have done Bluff Knoll but this is a whole new level!! Go girls!
It’s a bloody amazing place I can’t wait to return one day
We don’t have anything as wild and healthy as the Budawangs here in Perth. We have to drive at least 6 hours to get anything close to as awe inspiring. I love watching videos from women hiking - it reminds me to get off my bum and do the things I love . Thanks you for sharing your adventures 😊
Thanks a lot mate. Yeah hard when these places are so far. I do love some of the hikes over west. Love love love the Stirling rangers
Hi Kate, do you have any information or tips on dehydrating in the oven. I dont have a dehydrator, but would like to give this a try.
Apparently it’s possible if you prop the door open slightly with say a wooden spoon. Then turn it on at a low temp like 125. But sorry I’ve never had a lot of success. I got a dehydrator for about $60 secondhand when I first started out.
Oh you poor thing, not much fun feeling a bit grotty on a hard tramp. As a New Zealander, this video brought up many emotions. Leeches (yuck!), what about snakes? The familiar joyful feeling of bush bashing off track for many hours, pushing through the dense stuff, vs being on the tops and finding epic camping spots. Finding THE cave was so special. We're about to head back to a spot we haven't been to for many years, it's off track in Kahurangi and so special it's been our 'password' for the past 30 years. So excited to see if it lives up to how we remember it.
Oh thanks for the beautiful comment and lovely stories. How magic are these wild places. Would love to come hike over the ditch someday.
Climbing Mt S in Hidden Valley brought back many memories. Climbed it years ago with a friend who has since passed...and we laughed the whole way down as it was ridiculously sketchy and beyond our comfort. Can't believe the chain is still there! Hats off to yr combined nav skills.
Oh thanks for sharing that beautiful story. So glad you could relive it. It is such a special place. Sorry you couldn't watch with your friend.
What a transition: From random stranger on UA-cam with a video to the person my best friend now needs to upgrade their skills sets to keep up with. My words are in jest, but I think you'd be hard pressed to find a simplier way to convey this tutorial. Outstanding job! I will share to my playlist: "PCT Homework - Tents" as well as my FB Groups for the PCT and two local hiking groups I administer/moderate. PS: If you haven't taken a bow yet, this would be a perfect time to do so. Why? Well, simply because I do not have to create a video that covers this concept. 😂 🏅❤🏆❤🏅
Haha thanks mate - I love it! Glad it's been helpful. And thanks a lot for sharing it. It’s been sooooooo helpful out on the trail.
Well that was incredible… terrifying, beautiful and inspiring. Looking forward to the next instalment.
Thanks for the support! It's definitely a wild ride out there.
Great navigating ladies. Looking forward to more inspiring stuff from the two.
Cheers, it's amazing to get lost in nature and explore with like-minded people.
This was gorgeous to watch, so moving and joyful. I look so look forward to your next adventures together. 😍
It was truly special to get out there with her again - can't wait to share the next one!
Wow, amazing scrambling up and down those mountains and so much bush bashing too. Hats off to you and Caro. All the best for 2025!
It's a real wild ride out there! Thanks for the support. Hope you’re well mate
@ Yep all good thanks Kate.
Great trip spectacular scenery. Glad Caro found the origin cave 😊
Thanks so much - it really is a magical place.
Well, I had a good bawl on my lounge, watching Caro find the cave again! Beautiful scenery (although you can keep the leeches and the razor grass!). Looking forward to more adventures 💚
It’s an incredible place to get lost in. Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for your support Ingrid
So good to see two power houses in a same space! 💪🙂
Thanks mate. Would love to get out with you one day if the stars align 🚶♀️🚶♀️
I would love to watch this match up! @@KateGrarock

Thanks so much I appreciate the kind words. Hope to be many more to come. She is a bloody hoot to hike with.
Beautiful video, Kate! I cried seeing Caro’s reaction to finding the cave. I was wondering if you’d be able to explain how the hand line you used to scale down the cliff works. Thank you!
It's amazing to witness such raw emotion in nature, hey? Caro brought the handlline. We looped it around a strong tree at the top of a cliff with not many hand holds. So both ends were at the bottom and the middle of the rope was on the tree. We used it to climb down safely, but more importantly if we couldn’t find our way down the mountain we could use it to retrace our path. This helped us make sure we weren’t stuck and unable to get off the mountain. Then when we were confident we could continue I pulled on one end of the rope and it passes around the tree and falls down to me. Caro showed me this I’ve only taken smaller rope in the past to help lower packs.
Epic trip, two legends, inspiring wilderness 👌
Thanks for watching.
Love this so much- it captures the fun of doing tough things with like-minded folk. Just the best!
Thanks a lot. It really was fun. I’ve got to do more hikes with amazing humans
Always top quality videos Kate. Great to see you both having a rocking adventure in the heartland.
Cheers! It was such a special adventure to rediscover the cave. Thanks for your support
What an amazing adventure!! Love that you both teamed up for this ❤
Thanks mate! It was truly special to be out there with Caro.
What a great piece! I loved watching the very personal connection to place. This also captured the huge skill and knowledge you both have in negotiating this tough bush land. It was a joy to watch.
It’s an incredible place to get lost in. Thanks for your support.
Can’t wait to get down south and check these beautiful spots out 😊
It's a magical place! Happy hiking
Wow so nice !!! thanks for sharing
Cheers, it’s a real gem out there.
Hi Kate. I joined a bushwalking club 10 years ago at age 52. Best thing I ever did. Found my passion and my people. Thanks for sharing, nice to see how well the area has recovered since the fires.
It's awesome to hear you found your tribe! How good are bushwalkers. Thanks for your support.
Thanks, I loved watching Kate. I teared up with Caro as it surfaced my own spiritual, soul touching experiences whilst hiking/being with nature. My "waters" have saved me several times too.
So powerful hey! It’s amazing to share these journeys, thanks for sharing yours. How bloody good is nature
What an inspiring video! Can’t wait to check out this area. After I’ve done a navigation course 😂
Thanks mate. Yeah it’s an incredible place. Happy hiking
nice one Kate, thanks. planning to walk through from that side to WW, the regrowth is certainly doing its thing!
That's a great walk and the regrowth is wild - but not as bad as it has been. Some track maintenance has occurred where we were. Man wish I was coming with you. Enjoy and happy hiking
Ah Kate, already had me with tears in my eyes, and only up to the first 'Good Night' Look forward to the rest tomorrow.
It’s so amazing hey to be able to show this beautiful emotional side. Trying to do this more and more. Thanks for watching

Couldn’t agree more. Thanks for your support
Such a great video! I want to say you inspired me not to go back to HV but I may end up out that way in a week or so, Thanks for taking us along
That’s amazing! It’s such a special place. Hey if you do go let me know and I’ll give you a lat long for the mic I dropped. Bit of a needle in a haystack but would LOVE to get it back.
Magical! What an awesome place to spend a couple of nights and how wonderful to see you two living your best lives🥰
It was truly special, so glad you enjoyed the journey
Yep - Tracker Forest ESC - most comfy boots ever, rock hopping, scrabling and just going beyond the tracks.
They are so cool. I just got the Vivobarefoot Tracker AT mocosan. They are great
I so want to hike and camp with you gals😊
How fun would Caro Kate hiking tours be
Such a stunning place. You could get lost there and be happy about it. I never actually get lost. Although, I have, on occasion, been geographically embarrassed. 😆 Great video. Thanks for sharing. ❤
Thanks mate! It really is a magical place. And totally agree it’s a good opportunity to explore when you’re temporarily in a place you don’t know.
Sacrificing anode - are you a sailor, too?
Used to be :)
Aahh that explains it all. My sailing adventures include crossing the Pacific Ocean from Mexico to Brisbane on our yacht. Those times at sea with no land just sea and sky was my magical place, I never felt afraid. Your capture of early in the morning on the mountain with the colours of sunrise brought back visual and sensory memories of the sea, the expanse and beauty. I have just returned to hiking as sadly ocean passages are no longer an option but I will be searching for those special places on land. Thank you for sharing such a heart felt experience of nature and what it can teach us. 🙏
wow what incredible adventures you have had. Yes nothing quite like a sunrise or sunset in the middle of the ocean. Thanks for sharing your beautiful story. Best of luck with your hiking adventures, sing out if you have any questions. I love a good costal cliff camp to really feel the ocean times.
Thank you, your utubes were what inspired me, just did a solo overnight at Oberon Bay camp as a shakedown for Tassie in April. The sound of the ocean and walking on the beach at 5.30 am was beautiful. I really enjoy starting early and seeing the colours change.
Wow thanks for letting me know. That’s exactly why I started doing UA-cam to share the amazing gift hiking has been in my life and to hopefully help others embrace it too. Best of luck on taz. Let me know how you go
It's always good to follow along on your budawangs adventures. What an amazing experience for Caro, walking in the footsteps of her much younger self and seeing it through both old memories and new perspective.
Absolutely mate. So glade you came with us on the journey through the screen. Thanks for your support
