Narrowboat Maggie May
United Kingdom
Приєднався 28 лип 2020
A vlog about our travels on the UK inland waterways on our 57 feet narrow boat, Maggie May making traditional rope fenders as we go.
As continuous cruisers we live aboard and move location at least every 14 days. Our aim is to complete all the navigable canals and rivers, including tidal estuaries over the next few years stopping off at local places of interest, walking to local landmarks etc.
We have holidayed over the last 20 years, caravanning and motor homing our way around this island we live on, and we are hoping using the canal network, as opposed to the road network, will give us a new perspective on our country.
Please subscribe and join us on our journey.

The hills ahead as you head east approaching Barton Grange Garden Centre are the Bowland Fells. They are a significant area of high ground separate from the Pennines and the Lake District Fells. There are several scenic and challenging walks there. But a delightful short walk is up the outlier Nicky Nook from the village of Scorton. Scorton is about a mile east of the Lanky Canal at Cabus Nook just north of Garstang. Nicky Nook is prominent in the canal views for the 3 or 4 miles north of Garstang.
Thanks for that info Nick We keep meaning to do the Nicky Nook walk.
I think you are one of the first NB vloggers to venture into Preston. Thanks for showing us a little bit of the town, looks nice, would have liked to see some of the old mill buildings that are still standing. Hope the canal re-opens soon to let you return back to continue your travels.
Great to see that you went down to the Preston current end of the canal. So few locals do so because of the canal's boater's myth that it is all weeded up and very shallow. It's a real pity that the Harris Museum has been closed for so long for its refurbishment. This is also the case with many of the Lancashire towns museums. They all seem to be on the same financial plan.
It’s just a shame that moorings are limited at the southern end close to Preston
lovely canal thanks for sharing
Thanks for visiting
Well done you two. Informative and entertaining as always.
I hope you enjoyed some lovely Lancashire scenery as you passed through. x
Well done! You're on my home turf. I live in the village opposite the Asland Lamp. about a mile behind the two houses that you saw. The tide was very big that day. Although they can be even bigger. The cat/kingfisher is actually a raven. The same sculptor did about five sculptures for the Ribble Link. He also did 'The Navvy' on the Leeds and Liverpool where they cut the first sod, near Halsall. Bridge 4 is the railway line from Preston to Blackpool.
Many thanks for watching and commenting Nick. We welcome your insight on the area
That was worth all the effort and worked out really well Whackmeadow.
Bit like galley whacking Steve!!
The hill at 8:10 is Harrock Hill. It has a ruined windmill near the top in good condition. It's nice to walk around there. Surprised that you were disappointed with the spuds. Rufford area first crop new potatoes are very highly prized.
Thanks for that information Maybe our tastebuds just not honed to appreciate such prized potatoes!!
Dare I ask, did you beat the stoppage on the way back on the Ribble link?
No we did not! We are still on The Lancaster
We were in Burscough and Rufford today with grandson. Day out at Martin Mere wetland centre, Rufford Old Hall was the family home of Lord Hesketh as in hesketh formiula one with james Hunt. Nice video, I have subscribed.
Thanks for the info Phil and thanks for subscribing
What an absolute fluff up. As a middle aged single hander I’ve got no hope of getting through that. What do single handlers do, seriously?
Brilliant, thanks for that… I’ll be having a pop soon!👍
I really enjoyed watching this. I've fished or rode my bike along most of that stretch over the years. Always enjoyed saying hello as the boats pass.
Glad you enjoyed it I too like chatting to fisherman along the cut
You wouldn't have been popular mooring up to Viktoria and filling up when the fishing match was on. Advice for the future. I used to match fish in these canals a lot. The best thing is keep to the deepest water and slow down. That causes the least disturbance. On most canals the angler will carefully feed the far bank shelf, especially if there is a moored boat, overhanging bush or nice weed cover, in the hope of attracting larger fish later on in the match. I have twice fished the spot where you moored at the end. It is unusual in that the deep channel is very close to the towpath. Perhaps you found that. It is especially good for lots of small fish close in and fairly good across by the reeds for a few medium sized fish.
Wigan Pier makes its appearance at 13:57. The hump in the towpath, with its tippler rails silhouetted by the white walled building on the left bank.
I bet Steve's a tad embarrassed there.
Ya just can't buy advertising like that anywhere.
Hi, we like your Vlogs. Your voices are very hard to hear. Can I make a suggestion, wireless microphones, Amazon, cheap as and noise cancelling. Kind regards Andy & Janine.
Thank you for your suggestion
omfg watched this 2 years ago without realising its you lol bob
The status is The Fisher of Dreams. It's on the old swing bridge that used to carry the main train line to London. It is now a cycle path, part of the Trans Pennine Trail, hence you see an angled 'catching a train', and the dog piddling on the bike. This symbolises the current use of the area; fishing, cycling and dog walking.
Does the canal have any locks?
Sorry for the late response, yes there are many locks on this canal
you need to invest in some good quality mics cant understand you when its windy
lack of experience that flooded long boat, they didn't check to see all sides and both ends were clear of anything,
was that a polecat ? it was fairly big
I think it was a mink
I’ve never seen a mink in the wild, let alone one hunting. Invasive mink are eradicating our water voles. To the point of extinction sadly. I couldn’t make out if it had caught a water vole (water rat) or brown rat. Brown rat I hope.
Interesting about the stove glass. Gas flows up the chimney, the seal on the door is to stop air from inside the boat feeding the fire and burning up fuel too quickly. I.e. the fire is sucking not blowing. Granted, a gust of wind might cause momentary blow-back, but would that be sustained? Isn't that what the carbon monoxide alarm is for? Anyway, better to get it fixed.
Titanic 2 looks like it would be at home on the K&A, but looks can be deceiving! Also, hadn't thought of the network of bridges being narrow too, but only about the same as us taking a widebeam through a wider bridge, sometimes not a lot to spare.
Very much fit in on the K&A!
What specifically caused the boat in the lock to sink (6:00)? Tight lines and a lowering lock water level? Catastrophic stern gland failure? Does anyone market an alarm that sounds if a mooring line cuts loose?
The building by the water tap at the start looks like it might have been a packet Warehouse, to store smaller sized goods being transported on the canals.
The wides caused by subsidence following salt extraction are known as flashes. As are the ones formed by coal mining subsidence around Leigh and Wigan.
Thanks for that info Nick
Aye!!!!!, its the word"free" that caught your attention.
You know me too well Mr Leddy!!
there are still good people about, but it's the bad ones that we hear of most often... glad to see you were doing well at Christmas
Totally agree Thanks for watching Nick
@@narrowboatmaggiemay still watching now!
Aireville Park
I know this area very well, and it's lovely, however where you saw the two flags was not the border, this is where an immigrant from Lancashire lives and the local shop keepers love them as they SPEND money, whereas we all know copper wire was invented by two Yorkshire men fighting over a penny, my greatest love to all in Yakshire from over the border ❤ 🤣🤣🤣✋️
the junction behind you would of been the Bridgewater canal
I once had a tree fall whilst driving my van down the A650. I saw it out of the corner of my eye & just gunned it. There was a huge bang on the road inches behind my van. So much so that I felt the vibration through my steering wheel. A car over the other side of the road ran into it. I called the police to help get the tree shifted & all they could do when they got there was breathalyze me. 😂
Can you imagine how long it took the old timers to get through that tunnel walking the walls?
One of many landslides to happen over the winter season due to all the rain. Could think of worst places to moor.😉
Great. Would like to see more
Great video - Thanks :) Wishing you better weather too.
Hi Richard - what app or programme do you use to do the cruising map where it shows your route please?
Looked like a nice cruise in the sun. Keep seeing your boat in Parbold on other peoples vlogs. Look forward to see your adventures up north.
Yeah it was a nice cruise I’ve sent us on Narrowboat Wills vlogs. Are we on other peoples vlogs too? Thanks for watching and commenting
I meant to say offshore on tug boats
nice work brother Yeah I also work on shore and I make finders as well So I understand how time consuming infrustrating it is😂
I bet there are some hefty fenders on those tug boats too?
Very well done to the man who made this. There all homes at the end of the day.👍NB long in the tooth
Oh I’m on a narrowboats binge…now I’ve found you, to go along with my “kids” on boat time and of course where it all started, with Heidi.
Thanks for watching and sticking with it Sorry, who’s Heidi?
@@narrowboatmaggiemay Oh the rum wench, she was the first person I stumbled onto. I fell in love with her videos, it just feels like you’re hanging out with a friend. 🥰

Apologies I’m not local either
happy easter
Happy Easter to you too
The Pennine Way is about 270 miles in total. It also joins the L&L Canal at East Marton. Most people take about 2 1/2 weeks to do the complete walk averaging about 15 miles a day. Of course there are some substantial climbs most days. In the Gargrave area you could walk north to Malham and catch buses back via Skipton. You could walk south to Earby and also catch buses back via Skipton.
Thanks for that information
Thanks for including the walkup to Earl Crag. It's a great spot.
We really enjoyed that walk Nick Such a rewarding viewpoint
