Today's word of the day is 'peppered'. Now, as a noun, the word ‘pepper’ can either be a powder with a slightly spicy flavour, or a green, red or yellow vegetable.
However, ‘peppered’ is the verb form. The verb has 3 meanings.
Firstly, it can mean to put pepper on food.
Secondly, if something is peppered with small objects, a lot of those objects hit it.
Thirdly, if something is peppered with things, it has a lot of those things in it or on it.
Pepper has its origins in both Greek and Latin and the verb form first appeared in English in the 1610’s.
Some example sentences are:
‘I can’t resist a peppered steak from time to time. Just delicious.’
‘The soldier was wounded in both legs and severely peppered with shrapnel.’
‘After the party the living room floor was peppered with bits of food.’
